Top APKs on SamMobile this week

We have a dedicated APK section on our website where you can find the downloadable files for Samsung’s own apps and services. The company has quite a few of them since it has unbundled many features into standalone apps. This lets the company quickly release updates for these features without having to roll out a firmware update. Our APK archive contains the latest and previous versions of these apps so you can quickly find any APK ever released by Samsung.

Countless users take advantage of our APK archive to download the Samsung apps that they need. It allows them to even get apps that may not have been released for their region (such as Good Lock 2018). The top APKs on SamMobile this week are listed below.

What we learned about the Galaxy Note 9 the last week: Battery size, S Pen features, pricing, and more

While the Galaxy Note 9 has been the subject of various leaks and rumors in recent months, the frequency of those leaks and rumors has been far lower than what we generally expect ahead of a new Galaxy flagship’s launch. The upcoming tenth-anniversary of the Galaxy S line can be attributed as one of the major reasons for that, and it’s possible Samsung had a better hold on exactly what leaks out.

That hold, however, has fallen quite weak in the last few days, giving us plenty to talk about. From live images of the Galaxy Note 9 through renders of the various Note 9 color variants to possible pricing, a flurry of information has surfaced in the past few days. For those who may have missed our recent coverage, here’s a roundup of the important stuff we learned about the Note 9 over the last few days.

Galaxy Note 9 battery capacity confirmed

Galaxy Note 9

Confirmed is the wrong word to use for any information that comes out before a device has been officially launched. But the Galaxy Note 9 battery size has been one of the most interesting tidbits, and the recent certification by Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency ANATEL gave us the best evidence yet that there will indeed be a 4,000 mAh battery under the hood. ANATEL was kind enough to correctly reveal the Galaxy S9’s battery capacity ahead of its launch earlier this year, so there’s no reason to think it is wrong about the Note 9.

Possible S Pen features revealed

Galaxy Note 9

The upcoming Galaxy Tab S4 is expected to feature a Bluetooth-enabled S Pen just like the Galaxy Note 9. So it wasn’t surprising when the official Tab S4 firmware spilled some details on what the Bluetooth stylus would be able to do. By pressing the S Pen button, users would be able to control music playback and use it as a remote shutter button for the camera. They will also be able to assign single and double-press actions, unlock the device as long as the stylus isn’t inside the phone, and access advanced functionality inside various apps. Third-party app integration will probably be there as well, but it’s hard to say at this point in time whether the Bluetooth aspect of the S Pen will factor into anything other than Samsung’s proprietary apps and functionality.

Galaxy Note 9 storage capacity could start at 128GB

Galaxy Note 9

That the Galaxy Note 9 might not have a 64GB storage model was becoming more and more plausible when rumors of an 8GB RAM variant started to surface. But the latest rumor says that indeed, the base model will have 128GB of internal storage (and a microSD slot, of course). The rumor only talked about a launch in Europe, though it should be the same across the world. It is also said that Europe will get only the 512GB variant apart from the 128GB model and the blue, black, and purple color options, but that may not be the case everywhere. Sadly, there’s no word on whether there actually is a Note 9 with 8GB of RAM.

Galaxy Note 9 price may reach nearly $1,500

Galaxy Note 9

You were probably wondering already: Just how much would the 512GB variant cost? And, well, you’re not going to like it. Again, the info comes for the European variant, which may cost as much as 1,250 euro ($1,460) for 512GB of on-board storage. The 128GB model, meanwhile, might command a 1,050 euro ($1,230) price tag. Accounting for the additional tax in European markets, the Note 9 is still expected to hover around the $1,000 mark worldwide, which would make it the costliest Galaxy flagship yet. Fingers crossed that rumor about the Note 9 having the same launch price as the Galaxy Note 8 is the correct one, even if only for some countries.

Bixby 2.0 has support for third-party apps

Galaxy Note 9

This isn’t exactly a Galaxy Note 9 feature, as Bixby 2.0 will be coming to existing devices. But regular users of Samsung’s AI assistant will be happy to hear that Samsung will be giving third-party developers the ability to make Bixby work inside their apps. Right now, all Bixby can do is launch third-party apps if you ask it to, and even that doesn’t work too well. But version 2.0 could change things on that front, making Bixby more useful and worthy of a dedicated physical button.

We have to give the usual disclaimer than none of this information should be taken without a healthy dose of skepticism. But you already knew that, right? However, with only around two weeks to go for the unveiling of the Galaxy Note 9, there are fewer chances of any details that leak out in the coming days (and those that have in the last few days) of being incorrect. That’s also the reason why most of what we learned in the past seven days or so is more evidence to support existing rumors.

I would love to see a Burgundy Red Galaxy Note 9

Can we all just agree on the fact that the Burgundy Red variant of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 should have been there from day one? I know some of you are heading down to the comments section right now to tell me how marketing dictates that Samsung bring out these new colors at a later time to renew consumer interest in the device. But is it that hard to just make Burgundy Red a launch option and, um, bring out the gold and purple versions at a later time?

Burgundy Red is stunning and classy

Burgundy Red Galaxy S8

I was never a fan of phones that weren’t black. But Samsung’s Infinity display dictates that the front of the device always be all black, so I was suddenly free to choose from any of the other colors available with a new Samsung flagship. Of course, it helps that the company is using some tasteful and sober shades these days. And if you have seen a Burgundy Red Galaxy S8 or S9 in person, you probably came away impressed with its beauty. But it wasn’t available at launch, and if Samsung hadn’t sent me a Burgundy Red Galaxy S8, I probably wouldn’t be craving for it to become a standard color option.

Burgundy Red Galaxy S8

Samsung did send me one, though, so it is disappointing that Burgundy Red isn’t going to be available for the Galaxy Note 9. And I don’t think Samsung will bring it to the Note 9 even a few months later. Galaxy Note flagships aren’t supposed to be mainstream offerings in the same vein as the Galaxy S line. That means the company is far less likely to spend extra resources on bringing out new color options later on.

And with the tenth-anniversary Galaxy S flagship due to arrive next year, there are even fewer chances of Samsung making an exception by releasing new colors for the Galaxy Note 9. But one can hope, right? I already have one solid reason to get the upcoming Note on day one, and a Burgundy Red version would have made it a no-brainer.

What do you think?

Oreo update for some Galaxy A, C, and J series phones won’t arrive till December

Samsung is no stranger to releasing updates to an existing version of Android after a newer version has debuted, at least when it comes to budget smartphones and tablets. And that may also be the case with the Oreo update for some Galaxy A, Galaxy J, and Galaxy C series of phones. Samsung has a notice posted in the Samsung Members app with a schedule for the Oreo update, and while these notices can differ by country, it does give us a good idea of how long some Galaxy owners may be waiting for Oreo.

Oreo update for some Galaxies is still a while away

This particular notice can be seen by Indian users. As you can see in the screenshot below, quite a few devices are in for a wait till December. The list includes budget phones and some mid-range devices that had a limited release, like the Galaxy J7 (2017), Galaxy A9 Pro, Galaxy C7 Pro, and the 2016 and 2018 variants of the Galaxy On7. The Galaxy Tab A (2017) is slated to receive Oreo in October, while the Galaxy J7 Max (another not-so-widely available phone) will get it in November.

As Samsung notes, the update schedule can change based on “development and approval processes.” But if that doesn’t happen, then Oreo will take much longer to arrive for some devices compared to the time it took their predecessors to receive the Nougat update. For example, the Galaxy J7 (2016) was updated to Nougat in India in early September. That’s a difference of three months, which is a lot any way you look at it.

Oreo has had a shaky start

Oreo has been a problematic update for Galaxy devices in general. Many devices had to have their Oreo update halted as it introduced device-breaking bugs, and maybe that’s why the company is taking longer this year with a major OS upgrade. Or it’s in over its head with too many devices to update and may also be taking it slow for devices that have had limited sales. In any case, if you own any of the phones or tablets mentioned in the notice, well, patience is the virtue.

To check whether there’s a similar notice in your country, open the Samsung Members app, bring up the hamburger menu by swiping in from the left edge of the display, then tap Notices. Do let us know if you see a different schedule by leaving a comment. Also check out if your current Galaxy device is slated for an Android 9.0 P update.
