Merry Christmas from SamMobile!

It’s finally Christmas! We can’t believe it, either. A lot has certainly changed since we wrote our last celebratory message — the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge, Gear S3 Classic and Gear S3 Frontier, along with a slew of other fantastic Samsung devices, made their way onto the market, and the Galaxy Note 7 met its unfortunate demise.

Chances are, you kept up-to-date on all the latest happenings of Samsung’s mobile industry right here on SamMobile, and we’d like to take this as an opportunity to thank you, our community, for the continued love and support you show, which has ultimately helped us grow to the size we are today. We can’t thank you enough.

On behalf of myself and the rest of the team at SamMobile, we hope you have a fantastic Christmas, and a happy and healthy New Year! May your life be filled with love, joy, prosperity, blessings and happiness, and may each new day bring you new moments to cherish. If you don’t celebrate Christmas, we wish you happy holidays.

And Chag Semach to all of our Jewish readers!

What’s New With Nougat Part 15: Device Maintenance gets its own Edge panel

We’ve been putting the Nougat beta Samsung has released for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge to find out all of the improvements that the company has made to the software. Samsung released the fourth Nougat beta a couple of days back and we’ve now come across the fact that Device Maintenance gets its own Edge panel in Nougat.

The Device Maintenance Edge panel provides a quick snapshot of the handset’s performance. It assigns an overall rating and displays relevant information such as the remaining battery, free storage, free memory, the current Performance mode, and more. A simple tap on the Fix NOW button enables users to further tweak the performance of their handset.

If you’re curious to find out more about all that’s included in the beta, don’t forget to check out our What’s New With Nougat series. Samsung hasn’t confirmed as yet when it’s going to release Nougat to the public but it did confirm recently that the public roll out will start with Android 7.1.1.

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge get a minor update in India

Samsung recently updated the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge in India with the security patches for the month of November, and the company is now following it up with a new update. A 12 MB update has started rolling out to both handsets in the country today – it’s one of the smallest updates we have seen for either device, and Samsung makes no mention of the changes it brings.

The Android security patch level is still at December 1, so it looks like this update could be for fixing a few bugs that might have gotten through in the last update. In any case, it’s available for download over the air, so go ahead and hit the Download updates manually button in the Settings » About device menu to grab the latest software for your Galaxy S7/Galaxy S7 edge.

Galaxy S8 Plus rumored to feature 6-inch display

If a new report is to be believed, Samsung is going to push the Galaxy S series into phablet territory with one of the two models that it’s planning for next year’s flagship smartphone. According to a new report, Samsung is going to introduce two models of the flagship next year, the Galaxy S8 is said to feature a 5-inch display whereas the Galaxy S8 Plus may feature a 6-inch display.

It’s claimed that Samsung Electronics has now told its suppliers to start producing parts for the 6-inch Galaxy S8 Plus and the 5-inch Galaxy S8 from next month. Recent reports suggest that the Galaxy S8 might not be unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2017 and that Samsung might conduct a separate event for the Galaxy S8 in April 2017.

The report also reiterates that Samsung is going to eliminate the physical home button to maximize space for the display. Even though the display may be bigger than the Galaxy Note 7′s 5.7-inch panel, the size of both handsets is said to be about the same as there’s more room for the display itself.

It’s widely believed that Samsung is going to use a dual-edge curved display for both models of its next flagship which is probably why it won’t use the “edge” moniker as it has with the Galaxy S7 edge and the Galaxy S6 edge. Perhaps that’s why it may decide to call the 6-inch model the Galaxy S8 Plus.

I would like to point out here that there have been a lot of conflicting reports recently about what we should expect from the Galaxy S8. We’re aware that Samsung is testing several prototypes of the Galaxy S8 which is why conflicting reports are coming out. We’ve previously confirmed exclusively that the Galaxy S8 is not going to have a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

Our source revealed to us that their prototype did not have a headphone jack and even now some reports suggest that Samsung is sticking with the 3.5mm jack. Nothing can be said with absolute certainty at this point in time but we here at SamMobile will continue to dig deeper and provide you a final confirmation in the near future.

Samsung to soon launch Black Pearl variant of the Galaxy S7 edge in India

After the sad and unexpected early demise of the Galaxy Note 7, Samsung is doing all it can to maintain the sales of its current generation flagship smartphone. The company launched three new color variants – Black Pearl, Blue Coral, and Pink Gold – of the Galaxy S7 edge in a few markets. After launching two of these variants earlier this month in India, Samsung is now believed to be prepping for the launch of the Black Pearl variant in the country.

It is being reported by MySmartPrice that Samsung will launch the Black Pearl variant of the Galaxy S7 edge in the first week of January 2017. They’ve received information from a trusted retailer that the new color variant will be priced at INR 59,990 (close to $885), and that some retailers have already started taking preorders. This new variant was first launched in South Korea, and it comes with 128GB of internal storage as opposed to 32GB/64GB in other color variants. The company started listing the Pink Gold variant of the device in India earlier this week.

First Galaxy A3 (2017) firmware and wallpapers now available online

Samsung’s been working on refreshed variants of the Galaxy A3, Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A7 for quite a while now. All three handsets have been granted approval to launch on the open market by the FCC, and most recently a reliable tipster revealed that the South Korean company is preparing to launch the Galaxy A3 (2017) and Galaxy A5 (2017) in the Western European Union in mid-January.

It’s now looking that the time frame provided is actually correct as the first firmware for the Galaxy A5 (2017) is now available to download from our database, which is usually a good indication that a handset is just about to hits the shelves. Bundled in the firmware are eight default system wallpapers that are expected to ship on board the entire 2017 lineup of A series devices. We’ve included them below:
