Apple saw its first ever iPhone sales decline in Q1 2016 while Samsung further cemented its position as the leader in the global smartphone market, buoyed by the stellar performance of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge. Latest figures from research firm IDC show that even though Samsung witnessed a slight dip in smartphone shipments in the first quarter of the year it still fared far better than the fruit company.
According to the latest figures provided by research firm IDC, Samsung shipped 81.9 million handsets in Q1 2016 as opposed to 82.4 million handsets in the same period last year. On the other hand, Apple’s smartphone shipments for Q1 2016 came in at 51.2 million units as opposed to 61.2 million units in the same quarter last year. IDC mentions that Samsung was helped by the fact that its latest flagship duo sold “vigorously” in the month of March and this momentum is likely to carry over into the current quarter as well.
