Apple slips as Samsung cements its position as leader in the global smartphone market

Apple saw its first ever iPhone sales decline in Q1 2016 while Samsung further cemented its position as the leader in the global smartphone market, buoyed by the stellar performance of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge. Latest figures from research firm IDC show that even though Samsung witnessed a slight dip in smartphone shipments in the first quarter of the year it still fared far better than the fruit company.

According to the latest figures provided by research firm IDC, Samsung shipped 81.9 million handsets in Q1 2016 as opposed to 82.4 million handsets in the same period last year. On the other hand, Apple’s smartphone shipments for Q1 2016 came in at 51.2 million units as opposed to 61.2 million units in the same quarter last year. IDC mentions that Samsung was helped by the fact that its latest flagship duo sold “vigorously” in the month of March and this momentum is likely to carry over into the current quarter as well.

Samsung’s new IoT cloud platform is now commercially available

Samsung announced today that the Samsung Artik Cloud, an open data exchange platform which connects devices and apps, is commercially available. The platform provides easy-to-use open APIs and tools to securely collect, store, and act on data from linked devices or cloud services. Companies can use these APIs and tools to quickly bring new Internet of Things products to market. The new cloud platform coupled with the Samsung Artik portfolio of integrated modules enables faster development of new IoT devices and services as they offer an open platform with production-ready modules, development boards, software, drivers, tools, security features and more.

The Samsung Artik Cloud platform is commercially available starting today with a tiered pricing model, developers can start using it free at artik.cloud. “We’re excited to announce the SAMSUNG ARTIK Cloud after three years of development and feedback from hundreds of developers,” said Young Sohn, President and Chief Strategy Office at Samsung, adding that the launch of this new platform signals Samsung’s entry into the cloud services market.

First Thread-enabled IoT light switch showcased by Samsung and Legrand

At the Samsung Developer Conference 2016 today Samsung and Legrand showcased the world’s first Thread-enabled IoT light switch which is powered by Samsung’s Artik end-to-end platform, which is a fully integrated chip to cloud solution that enables companies like Legrand to speed up their product development process and reduce time to market.

The Thread platform was designed to securely and easily connect hundreds of IoT devices to each other and to the cloud using real internet protocols over a low-power wireless mesh network. It’s a great foundation for the connected home as it offers a secure and reliable mesh network with no single point of failure, low power, and simple connectivity. “In combination with the SAMSUNG ARTIK Cloud, our smart light switches interoperate with other smart-home products and effectively serve as the central nervous system of the home to make life simpler, more convenient and more secure for our customers,” said Brian DiBella, President Electrical Wiring Systems, Legrand, North America. The Legrand reference design demonstrations are available at SDC 2016.

Samsung is developing a standalone VR headset

Samsung has established a good footing for itself in the VR market with the Gear VR headset but its virtual reality ambitions don’t end here. The company has confirmed that it’s working on a standalone VR headset which will feature positional tracking, a technology currently found on high-end headsets like the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, this was revealed by Samsung’s head of R&D for software and services Injong Rhee at the Samsung Developer Conference 2016.

Simply put, this means that Samsung is developing a VR headset that will not require one of its smartphones to function. The headset will be a complete package with its own processing components and display, and may even have features like hand and gesture tracking, though Rhee says that it may take a few years before these features arrive in Samsung’s VR headsets. Rhee didn’t reveal any more details about this headset so it can’t be said for sure when the standalone VR headset will arrive, but at least we know now that Samsung is working on one.

Even though the company has confirmed when it’s going to release the Gear 360 camera in select countries it didn’t confirm what the official price is going to be. Given that April 29 is the release date for the Gear 360 this rather important bit of information should arrive soon enough. To find out more about this 360-degree camera check out our hands-on with the Gear 360.

Samsung Pay now lets you withdraw cash from ATMs

It was expected that this feature would soon make its way to Samsung Pay and now it has. During its keynote at the Samsung Developer Conference 2016 today the company confirmed that you will now be able to withdraw cash from ATMs using Samsung Pay. The feature will come in handy when you forget or lose your debit card but need to withdraw some cash from an ATM.

Samsung has really improved its mobile payments service as it’s also received support for membership cards which let users redeem points for rewards, and it works with gift cards as well. Users will also be able to use Samsung Pay to pay for transit and even for in-app purchases, paying for online shopping with Samsung Pay seamlessly. While the company confirmed that ATM withdrawals are now possible it didn’t immediately confirm which banks are going to support withdrawals by Samsung Pay so we’ll have to wait a bit for this crucial bit of information.

Minecraft for Gear VR has been released

It was confirmed last month that Mojang is going to release a Minecraft port for the Gear VR and that’s precisely what it has done today. Minecraft for Gear VR has now been released and it’s available for download from the Oculus Store. Since Gear VR only supports a handful of Samsung devices you’ll need to own the Galaxy S7, the Galaxy S7 edge, the Galaxy Note 5, the Galaxy S6 or the Galaxy S6 edge to play Minecraft in VR.

The company says that players who own the Galaxy S6 or the Galaxy S7 will find the screen resolution to be “pretty fabulous.” Mojang has released a version of Minecraft just for the Gear VR on the Oculus Store as it’s also making one for the Oculus Rift headset. This port brings all of the features of Minecraft: Pocket Edition and it’s priced the same as well. The port features cross-platform play with Minecraft: Pocket and Windows 10 editions. It’s live now in the Oculus Store.

Samsung pivots Knox to serve as a foundation for its enterprise solutions and services

Samsung may have introduced Knox as a defense-grade security platform but today it has announced that it has pivoted Knox to offer purpose-built, innovative and intuitive business tools. The new Samsung Knox is going to serve as the foundation for all of Samsung’s enterprise solutions and services. Putting Knox at the foundation of all solutions and services will deliver the infrastructure that Samsung needs to advance its commitment to the enterprise, said DJ Koh, President of Mobile Communications Business at Samsung.

Knox will continue to provide security coverage for Samsung devices as it’s expanded from flagship handsets to many mid-tier models and even tablets. [Poll] Would you prefer the Gear S3 to be bigger than its predecessor?

Samsung is expected to unveil the Gear S3 later this year, it hit the ball out of the park with the Gear S2 as it was a truly revolutionary smartwatch, which is why it’s going to have to do an even better job with the Gear S3 as fans now have a lot of expectations from Samsung’s smartwatch department. It’s unclear right now what sort of changes Samsung is going to introduce with the Gear S3 but we’d like to know how you’d feel about a larger successor to the Gear S2.

The Gear S2 classic and Gear S2 are 40mm and 42mm in diameter respectively. Most modern watches are sized similarly but over the past couple of years, there has been a push by consumers towards bigger watches. Customers have moved from largely preferring 38-40mm and 40-42mm watches to bigger sizes like 42-44mm and 44-48mm. Some of the most iconic Swiss watch brands like IWC, Breitling, and Hublot now have many 48mm models in their portfolio so it’s not going to be surprising if Samsung bumps up its smartwatch to this size and subsequently increases the display size which will result in a better user experience as more screen real estate is always welcome. So, what do you think, should Samsung stick with 40-42mm or should it get with the times and embrace the current trend in the watch industry?
