SamMobile Daily Recap: July 12, 2017 — Galaxy A7 (2017), Galaxy Note 8 and more!

Samsung to bring improved storage management to budget and mid-range phones

Samsung is working on making storage management on its budget and mid-range devices easier and more functional. A new ‘Storage Saving’ feature is in the works and will bring new options to help users free up storage on their devices. The highlight function in Storage Saving would be a Google Photos-like option that will delete local copies of all photos and videos that have been backed up to Samsung Cloud, although it might not be truly useful given the limited amount of free storage Samsung offers on its cloud service.

With the dedicated feature, Samsung is hoping to make storage management features more visible and easier to access. Storage Saving will also bring the Device Maintenance feature (which was recently released as a standalone app) into the fold, therefore acting as a central hub for all things related to the phone’s storage and performance. With Samsung’s budget and mid-range devices not being the most performance-oriented, these features could certainly help the average consumer take better care of their phone to keep things running smoothly, which would make Storage Saving a welcome feature for many.

At this point in time, it’s unclear if Storage Saving will make its way to flagship devices, or in what form it will be made available to existing devices. The feature may remain exclusive to budget phones, similar to features like Ultra Data Saving Mode, although we will only be able to know for sure once it is officially released.

Galaxy C7 (2017) rumored to sport a dual-camera setup

According to relatively reliable Twitter tipster @mmddj_china, Samsung has started testing another smartphone with a dual-camera setup, which is believed to be the upcoming Galaxy C7 (2017).

The Galaxy C7 (2017) joins the Galaxy C10, Galaxy J7 (2017) and much-anticipated Galaxy Note 8 on the tipster’s rapidly-growing list of smartphones that will sport two-sensor modules, though his information is far from confirmed.

Truth be told, the only smartphone we’re certain will be released with a dual-camera is the Galaxy Note 8, in order to put it in a better position to compete with the iPhone 8 on the open market.

We’re not saying that Samsung isn’t testing a dual-camera on the other devices, because it probably is. We’re just yet to see any credible evidence pointing towards them hitting the shelves with one.

It’s not like we can even count on the tipster to be right. While his information has been accurate in the past, he regularly jumps the gun and feeds his followers details before he’s able to verify them, and they often turn out to be false.

Just something to bear in mind.

Samsung publishes first video ad for DeX; showcases its potential

Samsung DeX was one of the new features that debuted with the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ earlier this year. The company tied up with various brands to make DeX-optimized third-party apps. Now, Samsung has published its first video advertisement for the DeX, showcasing various possibilities of the docking station.

The video shows how a journalist makes her Galaxy S8 the primary computing and content creation device. It displays how she captures images using her phone, then attaches the device to the DeX for using a large screen to edit images, create a document, and email it before the article shows up in the next day’s newspaper.

The DeX currently works only with the Galaxy S8 and S8+, but it should also be compatible with the upcoming Galaxy Note 8. Apart from the apps that already support DeX, Samsung’s partner firms are releasing more apps with each passing month. Read our in-depth review of the DeX docking station if you are interested in buying it.

Samsung patents two smartphones and a Gear Icon X-shaped case

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) approved a selection of design patents pertaining to three mysterious products on Tuesday: two smartphones and Gear Icon X-shaped case.

Unfortunately, the documentation doesn’t provide any information about the products. The only details we have are the ones included in the sketches — so clearly, there isn’t much to go on.

We should note, however, that Samsung regularly patents designs it toying with and the majority of them never see the light of day, and based on the peculiarity of this latest batch, we don’t expect them to either.

Check them out below:

Design Patent #1

Design Patent #2

Design Patent #3

What’d you think we’re looking at? We’re guessing the first is a variant of the Galaxy Note 8 that supports a 360-degree camera attachment and we think the second is a dual-screen flip phone. We’re not sure about the third, though.

Samsung’s profits will decrease in 2019, predicts Gartner

Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest memory chip supplier, will rank top in the global semiconductor market for the first time in the first quarter of this year, stealing the crown from Intel, predicts IT market research firm Gartner.

Last week, Samsung said it will post a record operating profit of $12.2 billion in the second quarter, but eager to put a damper on the situation, Gartner pointed out that profits will decrease in 2019 when Chinese firms enter the market.

“The market bubble will disappear in 2019 as memory vendors increase new supply and Samsung will lose most of profits to be earned this year and next year,” said Android Norwood, Research Vice President at Gartner.

It’s believed that the bubble was caused by a recent shortage in memory chips, which manufacturers, including Samsung, decided to use to their advantage by raising the price of DRAM and NAND.

Like any boom, things quickly come to an end when a supplier is able to offer a low price per unit, and that’s exactly what Gartner forecasts will happen when China-based manufacturers storm the market in the coming years.

It’s unlikely that Samsung will be able to match the price of the Chinese companies, as it costs a lot more to produce chips in dedicated plants in South Korea than it does in multipurpose factories China.

Samsung’s $150 million Next fund will invest in early-stage European startups

Samsung announced a revamp of its former Global Innovation Center earlier this year by launching a new global fund called Samsung Next. Samsung has earmarked $150 million for this fund which will be used by the investment vehicle to back startups. Samsung said that it was particularly going to invest in startups working on virtual reality, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things.

Samsung Next is the company’s first dedicated investment fund. Any and all investments in startups that Samsung previously made came from the company’s various business divisions. The new fund simplifies matters and also enables the company to have a focused approach when it comes to investing in startups.

The company has now said that it’s going to invest into early-stage startups based in Europe through Samsung Next. The fund has primarily funded startups in South Korea, Silicon Valley, New York and even Tel Aviv but none in Europe. That’s going to change now.

It has set up base in Berlin, Germany to seek out investment opportunities. Samsung says that it’s going to open additional offices for the fund in Europe within the next year.

“The combination of deep tech talent and cultural diversity makes this market (Europe) very attractive. It also gives us a great opportunity to become the place for European entrepreneurs looking to build and grow their startups and turn them into revolutionary companies,” said Felix Petersen who heads Samsung Next in Europe.
