All you need to know about the Galaxy Note 10 Edge panel

The Galaxy Note 10 Edge panel is a feature that is unique to Samsung’s mobile devices. It’s generally paired with Galaxy smartphones that have curved display edges, but it’s not exclusive to this design and can also be found on the flat-screened Galaxy S10e.

Edge panel is essentially a part of Edge Screen. It aims to bring more convenience to the user through shortcuts for apps and app pairs for Split Screen view, along with other features, some of which can’t be accessed elsewhere on the device. Think of it as a different apps drawer that can be accessed anywhere by swiping the Edge panel handle from the edge of the screen towards the center. One that features additional tools and widgets.

This guide will be broken down into three main sections, namely Edge panels, the Edge panel handle, and Apps edge.

Setting up the Galaxy Note 10 Edge panel

Step 1: Make sure Edge panel is enabled and its handle is visible on the left or right edge of your screen. If it isn’t, open Settings, tap Display, scroll down and then tap Edge screen. Turn the Edge panels switch ON.

Step 2: Tap Edge panels and select the panels you’d like to use. There are a total of 12 Edge panels to choose from, and Apps edge will be enabled by default. Some panels have unique options that can be accessed by tapping the Edit button under each panel. (The button is visible only for panels that are enabled).

Bonus tip: Out of the 12 Edge panels – some of which you will find more useful than others – we think Quick tools is a must-have. Most of the tools it offers, including a compass, a surface level, a ruler, and a tally counter, are inaccessible anywhere else on the phone.

Customizing the Edge panel handle

The Edge panel handle is the thin, rectangular tab located on the very edge of your screen. You can drag the handle towards the middle of the screen to access your panels, and you can switch between them by swiping left or right on them.

Step 1: Swipe the handle to access your panels. Tap the small cogwheel icon in the lower-left corner, then tap the three-dot context button in the upper-right corner and select Edge panel handle.

Step 2: This menu offers various customization options for the handle. You can change the handle’s color, transparency, and size; turn Vibrations ON or OFF, or move the handle to the left or right edge of the screen. Optionally, you can drag the handle and move it anywhere on the edge of the screen, and then disable Move from any screen to lock it into position.

Customizing Apps edge

Apps edge is the default panel and can accommodate up to 10 app shortcuts. Well, technically, it can hold 20 app shortcuts at a time if you fill all of the 10 slots with App pairs that launch in Split Screen view (here’s a list of useful App pairs).

Step 1: Swipe the Edge panel handle to access Apps edge and tap Edit. Remove app shortcuts by tapping “-“ or add shortcuts from the All available apps list.

Step 2: To launch two apps in Split Screen view from Apps edge, tap Edit and Create App pair. Select two apps, and then drag the pair into an empty slot. Tapping the app pair from the Apps edge panel will always launch both apps in Split Screen view.

The Galaxy Note 10 Edge panel, along with Air command, is a great way to gain convenient access to even more features on your phone. It streamlines the process of launching apps in Split Screen view, it offers information at a glance, and puts several new tools at your disposal.

Do you use Edge panel on your Galaxy device? Are you looking forward to trying out some of these features? Leave a comment below, and feel free to check our other Galaxy Note 10 tips.

Samsung outs Galaxy Note 10 review series feat. your favorite YouTubers

Samsung has launched a handful of videos to promote the Galaxy Note 10 series through the voices of other product reviewers. Right now, the company’s “Reviews” video series for the Galaxy Note 10 consists of five clips, all of which are under a minute in length. The videos include audio snippets and short clips of popular YouTube reviewers expressing their opinions on various Galaxy Note 10 features, including the S Pen, display, cameras, battery, and the flagship’s design.

Everyone agrees the Galaxy Note 10 is exceptional

Although Samsung generally launches its own video previews for brand new mobile products including the Note 10, there’s no better way to promote your device other than having other independent reviewers talking positive things about it. The video features YouTubers like MrMobile, Unbox Therapy, Marques Brownlee and others highlighting some of the best attributes of the new flagship.

And just as we’ve determined in our Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ review a few weeks ago, there are plenty of great things about the new flagship series and we’re certain Samsung didn’t have to dig deep to find all of these positive reactions for its Reviews compilation series.

The Galaxy Note 10 lineup brings a lot of new things to the table, from a redesigned S Pen to a new, beautiful display, a powerful camera setup, and good battery life with wireless charging and Wireless PowerShare capabilities. All of this is wrapped in a stunning glass body with very thin bezels and a colorful back panel (on the Aura Glow flavor). Check out the videos below, join us in the comment section, and feel free to share your thoughts on your favorite Galaxy Note 10 feature.

Taking the Galaxy Fold on holiday: It survived Egypt

After returning home from Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt yesterday, I thought I’d pen down my experience of taking the Galaxy Fold with me on holiday. As many of you are aware, Sharm el-Sheikh is a resort town that sits on the coastal strip along the Red Sea. There are amazing beach-side resorts which also means there’s a lot of sand. Using the Galaxy Fold in such close proximity to endless amounts of sand is going to give a lot of people anxiety.

There’s no denying the fact that the Galaxy Fold is a fragile device, at least when compared to other flagships like the Galaxy Note 10. Samsung bombards you with multiple warnings when you fire up the device for the first time. You’re not supposed to put too much pressure on the foldable display. You’re also not supposed to put anything in between the two halves when folding it shut. Samsung has done its job by adequately explaining what you should and shouldn’t do with the device. From that point onwards, you’re on your own. Good luck with your $2,000 phone.

The Galaxy Fold doesn’t have an IP rating, the standard by which we judge the water and dust resistance capability of a mobile device. No device has been classified as water or dust “proof,” but modern devices like the Galaxy Note 10 are resistant enough that you can dunk them in the pool and not have to worry about sand.

We have different conditions in the Netherlands compared to Egypt simply because of our location in the world. You won’t find a desert on the outskirts of Amsterdam but there’s a pretty impressive one right outside Cairo. You get the idea. I was worried about dust even before we got there.

As we’ve all come to know by now, the Galaxy Fold doesn’t like dust, sand, lint or any particle that could make its way inside through the gap between the panel and the hinge. Samsung has significantly reduced the gap before relaunching the device but it’s not completely sealed shut.

So out of an abundance of caution, I asked my girlfriend to keep the Galaxy Fold wrapped up securely in her bag until we reached the resort. We spent most of our time at the resort by the pool as we’re not really beach people. Not that this didn’t make me worry any less about the device. A dunk in the pool would most likely kill the Galaxy Fold.

I would put the Galaxy Fold back in our bag when I was done using it. Since the bag wasn’t waterproof, I always had this worry in the back of my mind that I should be careful with drinks around the bag. An accidental spill could cause serious damage after all.

By now you must be thinking what good could possibly come from taking the Galaxy Fold on holiday, particularly to a destination like Egypt? Well, you’d be surprised, as we certainly were.

It’s an ice breaker, a statement piece almost, as most people still can’t comprehend a smartphone in this form factor. I distinctly remember how a gentleman’s face lit up when he took a photo for us at dinner one night. He took one photo using the cover display and didn’t quite understand when I asked him to open up the phone.

I told him to just open it like a book and his face instantly lit up with a massive smile. He said this felt like magic! We launched into a conversation about how this was Samsung’s latest device and how it provides a completely unique user experience compared to anything else on the market.

Perhaps the most interesting reaction we got from people who saw us using this device was that they couldn’t quite believe it was Samsung. The company no longer deserves the reputation of being an Apple copycat but it takes a long time to change perception. People are genuinely surprised to see that such a futuristic device has come from Samsung.

Aside from the shock value, don’t forget that the Galaxy Fold is a genuine flagship. It has excellent cameras and delivers the best in mobile performance, be it content consumption or gaming.

Something that stood out to me was the convenience. There’s no need to bring more than one device with you on holiday. Previously I would carry a separate tablet but I was perfectly happy binging Netflix on the 7.3-inch internal display. Yes, you can’t be completely carefree with this device until it gets water and dust resistance, but this is a first-gen device after all.

Despite the concerns about the Galaxy Fold surviving conditions in Egypt, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the foldable smartphone. It offers everything that I need from a high-end smartphone and saves me the hassle of carrying multiple devices. The screen gets nice and bright so using it outdoors for extended periods of time isn’t a problem.

I look forward to the day when the Galaxy Fold picks up an IP rating as that would truly elevate this device’s usability. Don’t forget, though, that my unit did return unscathed from Egypt. So as long as you exercise reasonable caution, your Galaxy Fold will be just fine.

The Galaxy Fold will be available in a lot more countries soon

Samsung has gradually been releasing the Galaxy Fold across the globe. South Korea was the first to get it last month before select markets in Europe got it. It was released in the United States on September 27.

The company is now gearing up to make the Galaxy Fold available in a lot more countries soon. It’s not surprising, given that Samsung had previously said that its first foldable smartphone will be widely available, even if in limited quantities.

Galaxy Fold to be available in more markets soon

Samsung has already confirmed the launch details for the Galaxy Fold in India. Pre-orders begin October 4 with shipments from October 20. It’s also opening up pre-orders in the Middle East on October 6. Customers in the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait will be able to pick one up.

The Galaxy Fold is also headed to other countries in Europe. We’ve already reported that it should hit Poland on October 18. France will get both the LTE and 5G variants while Italy gets the 5G. Russia will get both.

The LTE variant is also going to be released in Nordic countries, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Spain, Thailand, South Africa, Malaysia and Australia. The 5G variant will be available in Switzerland and Poland as well in addition to the United Kingdom.

Prices will obviously vary by market but they will definitely be above the $2,000 mark. For example, the Galaxy Fold costs the equivalent of $2,320 in India. That’s likely because of higher import taxes on electronics not manufactured in the country. Samsung will eventually confirm the pre-order and release dates for all of these markets. It’s likely not going to be a long wait for them.

Get some peace of mind with Galaxy Note 10 SOS messages

Samsung’s SOS messages emergency feature has been around for a few years now, and unsurprisingly, it’s available on the Galaxy Note 10 series as well. When enabled, the feature allows users to send a quick alert with their location to up to four predefined emergency contacts by pressing the side Bixby/Power button three consecutive times.

Galaxy Note 10 SOS messages can also be configured to contain pictures captured instantly by your phone’s front and rear-facing cameras, as well as a 5-second audio recording, potentially giving your SOS contacts more information about the nature of your emergency.

How to set up Galaxy Note 10 SOS messages

Step 1: Open Settings and access Advanced features. Scroll all the way down and tap Send SOS messages.

Step 2: Tap the ON/OFF switch at the top and enable the feature. Note that if you’ve already configured your phone to open the Camera app by double-clicking the side button, you’ll receive a message reminding you not to accidentally press the button three times in non-emergency situations.

Step 3: Read the terms and conditions carefully, tick the checkbox and tap Agree. You will be prompted to add an emergency contact.

Tap Add and choose whether to Create contact or Select from contacts. (We will use the second option for this guide). Select up to four emergency contacts, tap Done, and return to the main SOS messages screen.

Step 4: Tap the Attach pictures and/or Attach audio recording ON/OFF switches to enable or disable these options. They work independently, so you can have only one, or both options turned ON or OFF.

We hope nobody will find themselves needing SOS messages, but it’s never a bad idea to be prepared and give your phone an SOS locator functionality. It was just a couple of months ago when the Galaxy S8 helped to save the lives of 20 people in the Philippines who were involved in a marine accident, all thanks to the phone’s water resistance and GPS connectivity. Samsung took that time to remind users of the SOS message feature, and the steps above should guide you throughout the setup process with ease.

You can also check our other Galaxy Note 10 tips for more guides on the phone’s various features, from the lock screen to the S Pen and Air Actions.

These Samsung Galaxy phones now support Android Auto Wireless

Google is finally making Android Auto Wireless available to non-Google smartphones, and the first third-party devices to take advantage of the feature are the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 series, as well as the Galaxy Note 8, Note 9, and Galaxy Note 10. The Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ are also listed, but the Galaxy S10e is not.

Android Auto Wireless was first introduced to Pixel and Nexus smartphones more than a year ago. The feature is true to its name and allows smartphones to deliver the Android Auto experience wirelessly to in-car head units.

Android Auto Wireless comes to Galaxy phones

Initially, Google intended the feature to work out of the box with any smartphone running Android 9 or higher, but in reality, support has been limited to only a handful of Google phones. This is no longer the case, and now, Android Auto Wireless is essentially available on more third-party Galaxy devices than first-party Google phones.

Car owners still require a vehicle equipped with a head unit that supports Android Auto Wireless. They also must install version 4.7 (or higher) of the Android Auto app on their phones. Google will likely continue extending support to more devices, but it remains to be seen if any mid-range Galaxy phones will make it in the next wave.

Samsung releases October security update for the Galaxy S10 5G

Samsung has started rolling out the October 2019 security update to the Galaxy S10 5G. The update is currently available only in Switzerland, but you can expect that to change soon. Unlike the Note 10 5G variants, the S10 5G is an entirely different device from the rest of the S10 lineup, so there is no guarantee the same update will be available for the other S10 models immediately.

Samsung hasn’t published the October 2019 security bulletin so far for us to know what vulnerabilities are patched through this release. Typically, these updates include security fixes from both Google and Samsung, with the latter being specific to Galaxy devices.

We also don’t know if this update brings any new features to the flagship device. With the September patch, Samsung brought many of the Galaxy Note 10 features such as Link to Windows, AR Doodle, Live focus video, Night mode for the front camera, DeX for PC, Dynamic Lock screen, etc. to the S10 series. If there are markets where the Galaxy S10 didn’t get the September update, the October patch may include these features.

Given that the Galaxy S10 5G is not released in all the markets, the rollout should be relatively quick. To check if the update is available to your device, go to Settings, select Software Update, and tap on the Download updates manually option. If that doesn’t trigger the update, you have to either wait or download the latest Galaxy S10 5G firmware from our database and manually flash it.

Galaxy Fold could launch in more European markets by October 18

The Galaxy Fold could go on sale in more European markets by October 18, according to information we’ve received from our sources. Samsung’s foldable phone, as one would expect, first went on sale in the company’s home country, and it then made its way to Europe with a release in Germany, France, and the UK on September 18th. Samsung didn’t reveal the full list of European countries where the Fold would be available, nor did it say when the device will go on sale in those markets, but we’re told that it should hit Poland at the very least on October 18th.

And we are assuming Samsung will also release the Galaxy Fold in other European markets around the same time. The second to last of October is also when the Galaxy Fold will reach consumers in India – Samsung will start delivering Galaxy Fold orders in the country from October 20. Pre-orders in Poland and other European countries should begin a week or two before Samsung begins to ship devices to buyers, although there’s a chance October 18 may be the day the company starts taking pre-orders, as it is yet to list the Galaxy Fold on its Polish website.

Are you looking forward to buying the Galaxy Fold?

Samsung readying world’s first 5G tablet: Galaxy Tab S6 5G

Samsung is preparing to launch its first 5G tablet, as evidenced by the emergence of the Galaxy Tab S6 5G with model number SM-T866N. For now, the release might be limited to South Korea.

Galaxy Tab S6 5G: World’s first commercial 5G tablet

So far in 2019, Samsung has launched a respectable number of 5G-capable devices, selling over two million Galaxy S10, Note 10, Galaxy A90 and Galaxy Fold units, in their respective 5G variants. Now it seems the company is preparing the launch of its first commercial 5G tablet, the Galaxy Tab S6 5G.

The guys over at GalaxyClub have uncovered a previously unknown Tab S6 variant carrying model number SM-T866N. This device was recently spotted at both the Wi-Fi Alliance and the Bluetooth SIG. While the first merely confirms the existence of the device, it is the second certification that reveals it is, in fact, a 5G-capable tablet.

samsung galaxy tab s6 5g sm-t866n bluetooth sig

Though further details remain scarce, it is safe to assume this Tab S6 5G will otherwise be the tablet we already reviewed some weeks ago. Of course, we do not know exactly when Samsung is planning to introduce the device. Still, usually these types of certifications are a good indication an official launch is not too far off.

For now, there is no indication of a release of the tablet outside of South Korea. European or US models have not yet surfaced. However, it is safe to say some 5G-enabled Galaxy tablet will sooner or later make it to those markets as well.

Galaxy S10 now supports Hyperlapse videos with the front camera

The Galaxy S10 lineup now has the ability to shoot Hyperlapse videos with the front camera. The Galaxy S10e/S10/S10+ received a major new update late last month that introduced a boatload of Galaxy Note 10 features, many of which are camera-related, and the addition of a Hyperlapse mode to the front camera is one of those features.

While Hyperlapse selfie videos are nothing new, it’s always good to have such functionality built into a smartphone’s camera app so users don’t have to opt for third-party solutions. Hyperlapse mode for the front camera works exactly like it does for the rear camera – you get the option to change the speed at which a Hyperlapse video is played back, and you can also leave it to the default auto setting and let the camera decide the playback speed.

Here is a small Hyperlapse video we captured with the front-facing camera on a Galaxy S10+:

Now, if you’re wondering when your Galaxy S10 will receive that awesome new update so you can start taking Hyperlapse videos of yourself, we don’t really have an answer. Samsung started the update’s rollout with Europe and has slowly been expanding its availability to more markets, and you will just have to be patient and wait until the update goes live in your country. The expansion has been slower than usual compared to previous feature updates for the Galaxy S10 lineup, and we can only assume Samsung is making sure no bugs get through before making it available for every Galaxy S10 owner across the globe.
