Samsung Gear Live no longer available from Google Play, probably discontinued

Samsung hasn’t been very keen on Android Wear, but the company was still the first (along with LG) to launch a smartwatch running Google’s OS for wearables. This watch was the Gear Live, which is basically a rehashed Gear that cut down on some features (like calling) thanks to Android Wear’s limited nature.

Needless to say, the Gear Live wasn’t very popular, partly because of lack of any marketing from Samsung, so it should not come as disappointing to anyone that it has now been discontinued, less than a year after it was launched. It’s no longer available for purchase from Google Play; you can still grab it from stores like Amazon, but it’s likely it won’t go up for sale again once the current stock runs out.

If you are put off by the fact that the Gear Live is soon going the way of the dodo, you can always look forward to the Gear A (codenamed Orbis), Samsung’s first round smartwatch. It will run Tizen instead of Android Wear, but it will also come with an attractive design, a new user interface, and a rotating bezel ring for intuitive operation.

05-14-2015 Firmware Updates: Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 10.1 2014, and more

Samsung has a plethora of phones and tablets in its lineup, and regularly releases firmware updates for various devices. These can include major updates, which bring a newer version of the OS to a particular device, or minor ones that improve performance and stability and fix bugs. Software updates for Samsung devices roll out in various regions every day, and you can find out which firmware updates were pushed out by the company over the weekend through our firmware list.

As usual, you can download each of these firmware from our firmware section (simply enter your device’s model number to view all firmware for that device) in order to update to a new firmware manually, or as a means to return to your phone or tablet’s stock software.

How to reduce animation speed on a Samsung device for a faster experience

Everyone loves nice-looking software (well, Samsung didn’t until last year, but the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge changed that), and there’s no doubt about the fact that animations play a big part in improving the overall experience of a user interface. These animations are basically what you see when you open an app, switch between two apps, or just go about browsing through your device, and Android has a lot of these. With Android 5.0 Lollipop, Google put new animations across the board, and along with the new Material Design philosophy, it has turned Android into perhaps the best looking mobile operating system out there.

But if there is one thing that has always irritated me as far as these animations are concerned, it’s the speed at which they play out when you click on something. As someone who finds speed and performance to be perhaps the most important aspects of an OS (and as someone who is much more concerned about usability than looks), I’ve found Android’s leisurely animation speed rather irritating. I’m pretty sure there are more out there that would like stuff to happen a bit faster on their devices, but another concern with operating systems these days is that they don’t offer you an option to turn off or control these animations, at least in the general settings menu.

But as many of you advanced users are probably aware of, Android does offer such controls, but it keeps them hidden in the developer options menu, which is also hidden on devices by default since Android 4.2. These controls are present in Samsung devices as well, but those who are new to the OS (and to Samsung devices) probably aren’t aware of how they can go about accessing these options.

Well, it’s quite simple. Go into settings on your Samsung phone or tablet, then click the About device option at the very bottom. Then, find the Build number tab down below, and tap on it around eight times until you get a toast message saying “congrats, you’re now a developer!” or something along those lines. This will enable the developer options menu in the main settings screen.

Now, go into the developer options menu from the main settings screen, toggle the Off button to on, then scroll down to the Drawing section. Here, you will find an option called Window animation scale and another called Transition animation scale. These two settings define how quick the animations will be when a new pop-up window opens on your device, and when you go from one menu to another or open an app, with the defaults set at 1x for both.

You now have two options. You can either set both these options to Off if you want no animations at all, or to 0.5x, which for me is a nice balance between leaving the animations on and also speeding things up. This also ensures that the device has time to breathe if you go about opening and switching between too many apps in quick succession, as the animations also allow the OS to take its time to get everything loaded and processed in the background.

animation-speed-1

Most users would never be bothered with the animations on their devices, and it’s probably why Google leaves the controls hidden in a menu the average user can’t access/knows nothing about. But being able to change the animation duration is certainly very useful, especially when you’re on a low-end or mid-range device that already takes too much time to do things (mostly because these come with humble hardware that can’t always keep up.)

A word of warning though. Once you’ve customized the animation settings to your liking, it would be best to stay away from the developer options menu and touching anything else. These options are meant mainly for app developers, and playing around with them can lead to apps behaving erratically.

Samsung Netherlands reaffirms Lollipop for the Galaxy Note 3 Neo

The Galaxy Note 3 Neo was a notable handset when it launched early last year, as it was the first time that Samsung was launching a mini version of sorts for one of its Galaxy Note flagships. In fact, it’s still the only such device given the Galaxy Note 4 hasn’t received a slightly downgraded variant. Launched with Android 4.3 out of the box, it was updated to Android 4.4 soon after, but being a non-flagship device it was never guaranteed to get yet another major software update.

But Samsung France proved otherwise by confirming earlier this year that the Note 3 Neo would be updated to Lollipop at some point later this year, and Samsung Netherlands has now reaffirmed the same in a reply to a user on Twitter. Once again, no time frame was revealed, which is a long-standing tradition considering what the update procedure for a device entails. However, Samsung’s new found knack for quickly updating even the humblest of smartphones means we might not need to wait too long for Android 5.0 to make its way to the Galaxy Note 3 Neo.

Samsung Wallet to be discontinued on June 30th

With Samsung Pay’s launch inching closer and closer, the Korean manufacturer has decided to shut down the Samsung Wallet service. Samsung is currently emailing all Samsung Wallet users that the service will be discontinued on June 30th; it’s not saying what the reason is, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the reason is the company’s upcoming payment service.

Any tickets or reservations made by users through Samsung Wallet will be available after its termination, but everything else (like creating new reservations) will be disabled post June 30th. We’re not exactly sure how many users Samsung Wallet has out there, but it’s discontinuation is no doubt going to irk a few folks, but given Samsung’s ambitious plans for Samsung Pay, it’s not surprising that its wallet service will be shut down.

Here’s the email Samsung is sending out to users.

Samsung reportedly paid $250 million to acquire LoopPay

Samsung announced that it acquired LoopPay earlier this year to compete with Apple Pay and Google Wallet, but the company didn’t disclose the amount of money it paid for the acquisition. Now, Re/Code has reported that Samsung may have paid around $250 for LoopPay’s acquisition, however officials from both the sides have declined to comment about this.

LoopPay, a Massachusetts-based startup, invented MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission), which mimics card swipes at checkout equipments. After acquiring LoopPay, Samsung embedded MST inside the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge, and announced its own payment solution dubbed Samsung Pay. Unlike Apple Pay and Google Wallet, which work only with upgraded checkout equipments compatible with NFC payments, Samsung Pay will work with any checkout equipment where buyers normally swipe their credit or debit cards. All the payments through Samsung Pay are secured with a touch-based fingerprint scanner, which is built into the Galaxy S6 and the S6 edge’s home button.

Since most of the vendors are expected to upgrade to NFC compatible point-of-sale terminals, the South Korean smartphone giant stated that Samsung Pay will work with NFC as well. Samsung Pay is expected to be launched in the US and South Korea in September. The company is also partnering with CITIC to pave the way for Samsung Pay in China and Hong Kong. To one up its competitors, Samsung isn’t charging any extra fee to vendors for using its payment system.
