Samsung will start selling dual-lens camera modules to Chinese partners soon

It was rumored last month that Samsung could soon start selling dual-lens camera modules to Chinese OEMs like Xiaomi and LeEco. Samsung Electro-Mechanics is already supplying Xiaomi with single-lens camera modules so it won’t be surprising to see the two take their relationship further. It has now confirmed that dual-lens camera modules will be sold to Chinese partners in the near future.

“The company is currently working on installing the production facilities for the dual-lens camera modules at its global production factories,” an executive from Samsung Electro-Mechanics revealed during a conference call with reporters and analysts. The company has said that it will begin selling its dual-camera modules to Chinese OEMs in the July-September period. It did not name the Chinese OEMs that will be sourced this component from the company. Xiaomi is again said to be one of the OEMs sourcing dual-lens camera modules from Samsung.

More images of the Galaxy Note 7′s iris scanner setup leaked

There have been countless leaks which confirm that the Galaxy Note 7 is going to feature an iris scanner. We’ve even seen a video of the iris scanner in action recently so it’s not like this feature will come as a surprise when Samsung unveils its new flagship handset on August 2. More images of the Galaxy Note 7′s iris scanner setup have now been leaked online, the long list of restrictions that we recently reported on can be seen in English this time around so you can really see for yourself all of the different situations in which the iris scanner may not work.

Some screenshots of the Galaxy Note 7′s new Grace UX interface are included in this leak as well. We can see the S Pen Air Command menu with familiar options for Action Memo, S Note, Screen Write and more. Glance is a new option on the Air Command menu as well as the ability to record parts of the screen to easily create GIFs. Screenshots of the app drawer show that it will be possible to arrange applications in alphabetical order by default and that some app icons have been swapped with new icons. We’ve more or less seen all there is to see about the Galaxy Note 7 so the only detail many will be concerned with when Samsung officially unveils the Galaxy Note 7 is how much it will cost and when it’s going to be available.

Samsung patents new wireless charger designs

A recently discovered patent filing from Samsung shows that the company has been working on new wireless charger designs. Samsung has illustrated three stylish wireless chargers in its patents and the illustrations suggest that they will look much better than the company’s current flat and disc-like wireless chargers. All three designs are taller which means they will be able to wirelessly charge a smartphone and a smartwatch simultaneously.

The patent mentions that this charger could be used to charge devices like cameras, electronic glasses, smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and other wearable devices. Samsung filed for this patent earlier this year in January and it was recently published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. It’s unclear when this new wireless charger could hit the market but considering that Samsung will be unveiling the Galaxy Note 7 on August 2, it would make perfect sense for the company to introduce a new wireless charger with its new flagship smartphone.

Samsung and Warner Bros. team up for Suicide Squad VR experience

Samsung is always on the look out for interesting VR experiences that it can get for the Gear VR and the chance to create something linked to one of the most highly anticipated movies of this year was too good to pass. It teamed up with Warner Bros. to create a Suicide Squad VR experience that has been demonstrated at the San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. The experience first allows you to watch one of the best scenes in the movie as if you’re floating above the characters and then get right in the action as Harley Quinn.

The Suicide Squad VR experience begins with the viewer being sent on a rescue mission which will result in their death if they fail to complete the objective. They then get to see a great fighting scene as if they’re floating above the characters after seeing a bit of trailer footage. In the last bit, they get to become Harley Quinn in the same fight scene and they have to actively take part in it by fighting, shooting and reloading to complete the mission. In case you’re not in San Diego to check out this incredible VR experience in person, do watch the video posted below, it also details the incredible amount of work that went into creating this Suicide Squad virtual reality experience. It’s possible that this VR experience could be released for everybody once the movie hits the big screen on August 5, 2016.

Samsung rolls out July SMR for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge in India

Almost 24 hours after it started distributing this month’s Security Maintenance Release (SMR) for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in India, Samsung is now in the midst of rolling out an identical update for all unlocked variants of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge in the region. As noted in the changelog that was published three weeks ago, the upgrade (dated July 1), transports all of Google’s latest patches for the Android OS, in addition to a handful of Samsung-specific optimizations, which includes a fix for a vulnerability that resulted in the Jack audio service enabling malicious applications to access or modify values in shared memory.

As usual, the update is being rollout out in stages. However, if you own a Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 edge, reside in India and would you’d like to see if its ready for your device, all you have to do is head into Settings » About Device » Software Update, then tap the Update Now button. Alternatively, you can wait until you receive a push notification prompting you to download and install the update from Samsung’s servers, but you’ll only receive this prompt in a timely manner if you’re connected to a stable, secure Wi-Fi network and have at least 50% of battery, or you’re plugged into a power outlet.

Thanks, Parth!
