This Galaxy device was Samsung’s best-selling smartphone in Q3 2020

Samsung beat Apple in the US for the first time in years in terms of smartphone sales. It also managed to recapture the first spot in the Indian smartphone market in Q3 2020. Now, it is being reported that out of the top ten best-selling smartphones globally, five devices were made by Samsung.

According to a new report from market research firm Canalys, the Galaxy A21s was Samsung’s best-selling smartphone in the third quarter of this year. It was also the third best-selling mobile phone globally, and the South Korean tech giant managed to sell more than 10 million units of it. The Galaxy A11 (10 million), Galaxy A51 (8 million), Galaxy A31 (5 million), and the Galaxy A01 Core (4 million) were at fourth, fifth, eighth, and tenth positions, respectively.

It is interesting to see that all Samsung smartphones in the list are from the Galaxy A series. The iPhone 11 (16 million) and the iPhone SE 2020 (10 million) were the top two best-selling smartphones in the world during Q3 2020. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 series (6 million), Redmi 9 (5 million), and the Redmi 9A (close to 5 million) are ranked sixth, seventh, and ninth, respectively.

Were you surprised to see that none of the Galaxy devices in the list are from the Galaxy Note or Galaxy S series? Let us know in the comments section below.

Samsung had launched the Galaxy S20+ BTS Edition in India four months ago. Now, the company is selling the purple-colored smartphone with a limited-time discount during the festive period in the country. On top of the price drop, buyers can get an additional discount when they make the purchase via select credit or debit cards. If you are a BTS fan, this might be the perfect time to get yourself the Galaxy S20+ BTS Edition.

The Galaxy S20+ BTS Edition was launched in India with a price tag of INR 87,999 (around $1,180), but it is now being sold for just INR 77,999 (around $1,047). That’s a massive discount of INR 10,000 (around $134). Potential buyers can get an additional discount of INR 1,500 (around $20) by making the purchase using HDFC credit or debit cards. The phone comes with a special box and some BTS photo cards and stickers.

Along with the phone, the company is offering a chance to buy the Galaxy Buds+ for just INR 5,999 (around $80). Samsung is also offering a 50% discount on the price of Samsung Care+, which protects the phone against accidental and liquid damage. There are financing options, too. OnePlus just lost to Samsung at its own Android OS support game

There are countless Samsung fans who give the company a hard time for various reasons, from its proprietary software to the choice of chipsets. It’s only natural for fans to want their brand of choice to perform better, and indeed, there are lots of areas upon which Samsung could improve. But the area of Android OS updates isn’t quite one of them. For the past few years Samsung has been working on making its software experience more pleasant with the release of One UI, all the while improving support with timely firmware updates. And now, Samsung is officially better than OnePlus at keeping its phones up to date.

Many Android smartphone users, especially OnePlus fans, might already be preparing for a counter-attack in the comment section, but hear me out before you ready your pitchforks. OnePlus made a name for itself by offering great hardware for the price and by supporting its phones with more Android OS updates than any other OEM. It became the undisputed king in terms of support for Android OS, but oddly enough, the company has decided to take the exact opposite approach with the launch of the non-flagship OnePlus Nord N10 and N100.

These two OnePlus phones are guaranteed to receive only one major Android OS update and support will cease after Android 11. What’s worse is that this OS version is already out for Google’s smartphone lineup and it should reach third-party phones before the end of the year or shortly after. In a sense, the lack of software support suggests that OnePlus is not as dedicated to the Nord series as fans would’ve liked and it may be using the new duo of smartphones as a gateway to its more expensive solutions.

Samsung is beating OnePlus at its own game

While OnePlus is lowering its ambitions regarding Android OS support – at least for the non-flagship segment – Samsung is doing the opposite. The Korean tech giant confirmed at Galaxy Unpacked that it is now committed to offering three years of Android OS updates, and this statement applies to more than just its premium devices.

Samsung is now guaranteeing three Android OS updates for a variety of phones, the most affordable of which is the mid-range Galaxy A51. The Galaxy A51 was released nearly a year ago running Android 10 and it will take advantage of Android 13 at end-of-life. Obviously, the same can’t be said for the OnePlus Nord series, even though it will co-exist with the Galaxy A51 on the market.

Ultimately, we’re not arguing that the Galaxy A51 is a better or worse phone than the OnePlus Nord lineup. There are a lot more variables that come into play when determining that, but as far as support for Android OS updates is concerned, Samsung has undeniably taken the charge and is now leading the pack, especially in the mid-range segment.

This should all work in Samsung’s favor especially in markets such as India where the OnePlus brand has been enjoying a lot of success and has caused difficulties for the Korean tech giant.

More users complain about broken Galaxy S20 / Note 20 wireless charging

A fair number of Galaxy S20 Ultra and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra owners have been complaining about issues with wireless charging following the most recent firmware updates. An increasing number of owners have brought the issue to light on official and unofficial forums, and from what we can tell, the problem seemingly occurs only with some, but not all third-party chargers.

We haven’t experienced these issues with our Galaxy S20 and/or Galaxy Note 20 series phones but according to user reports, the problem consists of wireless charging getting constant interruptions every few seconds. Affected users all claim that they were able to wirelessly recharge their phones using the same third-party chargers in the past, however, the issue started cropping up after one of the recent firmware updates.

It’s unclear exactly what update may be causing this wireless charging problem for the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 lineup, and judging by user reports, most cases affect only the Ultra models. Looking at the timeline of events, the culprit might be the September 2020 or the October 2020 security patch.

Affected users claim to have tried everything, from rebooting the device to clearing the cache and factory resetting, without getting any results. The issue appears to be spreading but so far it seemingly affects a relatively small number of Galaxy S20 / Galaxy Note 20 owners compared to the number of units that have been sold worldwide. Or perhaps the issue exists for a lot more users but it remains hidden to those who don’t use wireless charging on a regular basis or at all. Have you experienced any wireless charging issues with your Galaxy S20 / Galaxy Note 20 model? Let us know in the comment section.

After 8 years of testing, SAIT researchers bring holograms closer to reality

Hologram technology has been one of the biggest geek fantasies of the last few decades but thanks to new advancements in areas such as displays, optics, and AI, holograms might actually become a part of our daily lives relatively soon. Researchers at the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) are working hard on making holograms real and for the past eight years they have been developing technologies for holographic displays. After eight years of trialing the technology, the researchers are now confident that they can make a holographic display as a product in the near future.

Samsung researchers have recently published a thesis on slim-panel holographic video displays in the Nature Communications peer-reviewed scientific journal. The thesis details a new technology developed by SAIT, called S-BLU (steering-backlight unit), which seemingly addresses one of the biggest issues holding back holographic technology: narrow viewing angles.

S-BLU consists of a thin, panel shaped light source called a coherent-backlight unit (C-BLU) […] and a beam deflector. The C-BLU module transforms an incident beam into a collimated beam, whereas the beam deflector module is capable of adjusting the incident beam to a desired angle.

Why holographic displays recreate depth more accurately than 3D panels

3D displays have existed for many years now. They are capable of conveying a sense of depth by tricking the human eye into thinking it’s looking at 3D objects. In reality, these 3D displays are still essentially 2D. The 3D images are shown on a flat 2D surface and the 3D effect is achieved mostly by leveraging binocular parallax, i.e., the difference in angle between the viewer’s left and right eye when focusing on an object.

Samsung’s holographic display technology is fundamentally different in that it can create actual 3D images of objects in 3D space using light. 3D displays provide some depth perception cues for the human eye to rely on, but holograms employ all of them.

This is nothing new, of course, as hologram technology has been experimented on for decades, but Samsung’s latest advancements in the form of the S-BLU element might be the key to bringing actual 3D holograms to the masses. According to SAIT researchers, S-BLU can expand the viewing angle for holograms roughly 30-fold compared to a conventional 4K 10-inch display that has a viewing angle of 0.6 degrees.

Although we could sure use this technology in the era of social distancing, you probably shouldn’t  expect Samsung to be selling holographic displays anytime soon. S-BLU could be the key to pushing the technology forward but there’s a long way to go from a thesis to a real consumer-grade product.

Nevertheless, with a bit of luck and a lot of effort from SAIT researchers, we might be able to experience 3D hologram phone calls in our lifetime. Holograms could also be used for displaying virtual blueprints or navigation, and daydreaming even further, Samsung would surely have a winning formula on its hands if it could cram holographic technology into an AI-driven robot like Ballie.

Samsung is looking to put an end to Galaxy S7 waterproof-related lawsuits

Samsung has been facing accusations of misleading marketing for the Galaxy S7 not only in Australia but also in the US where the company has recently asked a New Jersey court to dismiss a proposed class action suit that was filed by a Galaxy S7 owner earlier this year. The company argues that the plaintiff had failed to meet the criteria needed for a class action lawsuit and that the suit falls outside the New Jersey federal court’s jurisdiction.

Let’s rewind back to Q1 2016 for a moment and paint a clearer backdrop for this new legal dispute. The Galaxy S7 series has just been unveiled and Samsung is highlighting the phone’s IP68 dust and water resistance rating left and right. TV ads featuring Lil Wayne pouring champagne on a Galaxy S7 or dunking the phone in a fishtank make the rounds and everyone is talking about the new flagship phone’s impressive characteristics.

In reality, it turned out that the Galaxy S7 was not quite as waterproof as the company’s ads may have made you believe. The fineprint stated that the IP rating does not cover salt water and that the phone is not suited for use inside a pool. Later in 2016, a California woman going by the name of Dulce Alondra Velasquez-Reyes found out about the Galaxy S7’s weakness the hard way when her phone got permanent water damage after it took an accidental dive into the toilet. The disgruntled Galaxy S7 owner responded by filing a complaint with the Central District of California, seeking monetary compensation and arguing that Samsung should cease marketing the Galaxy S7 as being waterproof.

It’s 2020 and Samsung wants to put an end to these disputes

Fast forwarding to 2020, the complaint filed by Dulce Alondra Velasquez-Reyes in 2016 was dismissed in July 2020. However, another similar suit was filed back in May 2020 by a New Jersey resident, Jill Clark, who claimed to have purchased the Galaxy S7 from Best Buy in December 2017 on account of its water resistance. Clark’s phone was also damaged after it’s been exposed to water and a class suit was filed under the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act.

According to The Register, Samsung has now forwarded a motion to dismiss the class suit because, in sum, [Clark] has entirely failed to allege facts supporting her legal contention that [Class Action Fairness Act] applies. Samsung argues that the plaintiff does not allege how much she paid for her Galaxy S7 or how much she can show in damages, nor does she plead any facts regarding the number of putative members of the New Jersey Class or the quantum of damages those putative class members are alleged to have suffered.

Time will tell how the story develops further and whether the New Jersey court will take the plaintiff’s side or dismiss the case. Until more details emerge, take a look at the classic Galaxy S7 ad below starring Lil Wayne and share your thoughts in the comment section. Do you think the company went overboard with its ads and focused too much on painting the Galaxy S7 as a waterproof / highly water resistant device, perhaps to the point where it became disingenuous? Or do you think Samsung gave customers enough information?

Samsung pledges millions to 5G accelerator in latest AI bet

Venture capital experts over at Samsung Next found their latest venture deemed worthy of a capital injection; one that seems to cover all of today’s hottest keywords across the tech industry – from AI to 5G. The lucky winner is Cellwize Wireless Technologies, an Israeli startup that doesn’t have a lot in the way of brand recognition but is nonetheless already at the forefront of the fifth generation of wireless networks. All on account of CHIME, its proprietary 5G RAN automation platform powered by machine learning tech that’s already in use across 16 countries.

A newly concluded Series B funding round saw Cellwize raise $32 million earlier this week, bringing its lifetime venture capital to $56 million. Samsung Next participated alongside Verizon Ventures, as well as Cellwize’s Series A investors. Intel and Qualcomm led the round, the Tel Aviv-based company disclosed.

Cloud, AI, 5G: Samsung covering all of today’s hottest VC trends at once

CHIME itself is a cloud RAN automation service Cellwize – established in 2013 – originally tailored to Bell Canada and proceeded to commercialize globally. Over the last seven years, Cellwize expanded to Europe, Singapore, and South America; with even more institutional investors such as Samsung backing its operations, the firm is likely to maintain its strong momentum in the short term.

Samsung, itself, remains deeply involved in various 5G bets the world over. And while 2020 was an overall setback to global 5G deployment efforts, adoption rates are likely to return to growth by this time next year, especially with Samsung’s venture capitalists signing as many checks as they have been since 2018.

Secure Folder debuts on M series with Galaxy M31s One UI 2.5 update

Samsung’s ambitious mid-range phone, the Galaxy M31s, has just gotten better following the latest firmware update it received. The Galaxy M31s is now being updated to One UI 2.5 and the firmware includes the November 2020 security patch. The latest release carries build number M317FXXU2BTK1 and weighs a little under 750MB.

The official changelog mentions a ton of new features that should now be a part of the Galaxy M31s user experience, such as an improved Samsung Keyboard with support for Landscape mode, new SOS options for Messages, and various improvements to Camera. We weren’t able to test the firmware as of this writing but according to the changelog, existing features such as Pro Mode and Single Take have been improved further.

Alt Z Life and Secure Folder make it to the Galaxy M31s

As expected, the changelog pertaining to the latest One UI 2.5 firmware update for the Galaxy M31s looks familiar and mentions the usual changes and additions, such as Bitmoji Stickers support on the Always On Display. However, the changelog also specifies a couple of key additions that seemingly push the Galaxy M31s firmware from ‘Core’ to the full-fledged One UI experience.

With One UI 2.5, the Galaxy M31s has received the Alt Z Life feature set that was previously released for the Galaxy A51 and the Galaxy A71. The Alt Z Life update intros content suggestions powered by on-device AI, as well as Quick Switch which is a feature that allows users to launch apps in private or public modes.

But perhaps the most intriguing part of this update is the inclusion of Secure Folder. This One UI feature has never been released on a Galaxy M device before, and up until now, the general consensus was that Galaxy M devices will never receive Secure Folder through a firmware update because this budget phone series lacks the necessary security hardware.

Assuming that the changelog is indeed 100% accurate then the new update throws the whole Secure Folder availability theory out the window. It also raises the question as to what other Galaxy M phones might be getting Secure Folder in the future. Time will tell.

For the time being, the One UI 2.5 firmware update for the Galaxy M31s is rolling out in India, Russia, and Ukraine. You should be able to download the update by opening Settings on your phone, accessing Software Update and tapping Download and install. Or you can refer to our firmware archive for the Galaxy M31s, download the latest update from there and install it on your phone using a Windows PC.

This is the third Galaxy Note 20 One UI 3.0 beta firmware to be released ever since the program was expanded to cover Samsung’s phablet. The company has also confirmed that a handful of other devices will soon get the beta as well. This includes the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 series in addition to the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

Third Galaxy Note 20 One UI 3.0 beta update released

Samsung is now rolling out the One UI 3.0 beta firmware version N98xxXXU1ZTK7 for the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. It’s been rolled out in Germany and India so far. It goes without saying that this update will soon become available in other eligible markets as well.

The changelog contains a long list of bugs that have been fixed in this update. Most of the fixes are similar to what we saw with the Galaxy S20 update that was released yesterday. Like the previous version, the latest beta update for the Galaxy Note 20 series also comes with the November 2020 security patch.

It’s unclear when Samsung is going to release the final One UI 3.0 update to everyone that owns a Galaxy Note 20 device. The company has said that the Galaxy S20 will get it before the end of this year. Even though the Galaxy Note 20’s beta program is running behind the Galaxy S20, we hope that it won’t be too long before the stylus-equipped duo gets it as well.

Samsung’s Eco-Life Lab gets certified as microbial laboratory by TUV Rheinland

Samsung Electronics has announced that its microbiology laboratory unit Eco-Life Lab has received certifications from TUV Rheinland AG for finding new ways to test microbial activities in electronic devices such as smartphones. The lab has received ISO 846 and ISO 22196 certifications from the German product testing institute.

The ISO 846 certification has been granted to Samsung’s Eco-Life Lab for finding a way to evaluate microbial activities on plastic surfaces, while the ISO 22196 certification is for developing a measurement of antibacterial activity on plastics and non-porous surfaces. The company had hired various experts earlier this year to find the cause of fungus growth, harmful microbial activities, and bad odor that could be found in electronic devices such as smartphones, computers, and more.

The Eco-Life Lab was established in 2004 to analyze harmful substances, and in January, the company started identifying microorganisms. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, consumers have become more aware of cleanliness and are trying to stay safe from harmful bacteria and viruses. Samsung says that the two new certifications will beef up its reputation and the ability to quickly verify microbial activity in its products.

Jeon Kyung-bin, head of Samsung Electronics‘ Global CS Center, said, “Samsung has earned the public confidence through the lab‘s recent works, through which the company can analyze factors that might cause health and hygiene issues. The company will increase its efforts to find measures to improve issues that can arise when using its products.
