First Galaxy S10 5G firmware download available now

The Galaxy S10 5G has gone on sale in South Korea. Samsung’s home country is understandably the first market to get its 5G device. Now, the first Galaxy S10 5G firmware download is available from our database.

Samsung will eventually bring the Galaxy S10 5G to more markets across the globe. Availability depends on carrier support as well since mobile 5G networks need to be live before the device can be released in a country.

First Galaxy S10 5G firmware download

South Korea has become the first country in the world to flip the switch on its mobile 5G networks. The United States will be next when Verizon launches its 5G network on April 11. The Galaxy S10 5G will be exclusive to the country’s largest carrier initially. Recent reports suggest that it may be launched on Verizon next month.

There are some core differences between the Galaxy S10+ and the Galaxy S10 5G. It has a larger display and a bigger battery. It’s also the only model in the entire lineup with a quad camera system. Do check out our Galaxy S10 5G hands-on to learn more about the differences between the two devices.

Samsung recently confirmed the pricing for the Galaxy S10 5G in South Korea. The 256GB model costs 1.39 million won ($1,231) and the 512GB model is priced at 1.55 million won ($1,366). It has also confirmed that the device will arrive in European markets over the summer as and when 5G networks go live in countries where it’s working with local carriers for support.

Samsung begins April 2019 security patch rollout starting with Galaxy Note 8

A couple of days after publishing details about the April 2019 security patch, Samsung has kickstarted the rollout of the latest monthly update starting with the Galaxy Note 8. It appears the update is out since yesterday in Netherlands, Germany, Russia, Italy, and a few other regions. Interestingly, the carrier variants of the Note 8 in the US have started receiving the Android Pie update with March security patch in the last week or so.

The update bumps the software version, which varies by region, to N950FXXS5DSC5 in the Netherlands. Other than security fixes, the release doesn’t seem to bring any other notable changes to the Note 8. As detailed in the security bulletin, the April 2019 Security Maintenance Release (SMR) fixes five critical and dozens of high-risk Android OS vulnerabilities. It also patches fifteen Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items of varying severities.

To check if the update is available to your device, open the Settings app, go to Software Update, and tap on Download and install. It is possible that all devices even in the regions where the update is out may not receive the update at once. If you want to install the update right away, you can download the latest Galaxy Note 8 firmware from our database and manually install it.

Samsung brings the Galaxy A20 to its already crowded lineup in India

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A10, A30, and A50 in India last month. The missing Galaxy A20 and A40 in the lineup were announced in other regions later. This gave the impression that Samsung may not launch all the models in every market as they are not much different from each other and are priced closely. It appears that may not be the case as the Korean company is now bringing the Galaxy A20 to India.

In terms of specifications, the Galaxy A20 comes with a 6.4-inch HD+ Infinity-V Super AMOLED display, Exynos 7884 octa-core CPU, 13 MP + 5 MP dual camera setup on the back, 8 MP front camera, 3 GB RAM, 32 GB storage, microSD slot, USB Type-C port, 4,000mAh battery, 15W fast charging, and Android 9 Pie with Samsung’s One UI on top. The spec sheet shows that Samsung created the Galaxy A20 by borrowing some specs from the A10 and some from the A30.

The Galaxy A20 will be available in red, blue and black color options. It is priced at INR 12,490 (~$180) for the 3GB/32GB variant in India. Interestingly, Samsung is not offering any other storage options, probably because a higher-end variant will be too close to the A30 in terms of specs and pricing. It will be available for purchase from April 8 onwards at all online and offline retailers across the country.

Samsung’s budget lineup in India is getting crowded with new M and A series devices. Most of these models share many core features and are priced not far apart. While the strategy helps the company to address as many market segments as possible, it also carries the risk of confusing the customer and diluting the brand appeal.

Verizon to open Galaxy S10 5G pre-orders on April 18

The Galaxy S10 5G is now on sale in South Korea. The smartphone will next hit the US market, with Verizon reportedly beginning selling the device on May 16. Now some fresh reports claim that the carrier will start taking pre-orders for the world’s first 5G smartphone on April 18.

Verizon has already flicked the switch on its commercial 5G mobile services in parts of Minneapolis and Chicago. However, there’s only one phone that can actually leverage the 5G services, the Moto Z3, which needs an additional Moto Mod for that to work. The Galaxy S10 5G is the world’s first smartphone with an integrated 5G modem.

No pricing details available yet

The Galaxy S10 5G will be a Verizon-exclusive device in the US initially. The carrier has reportedly completed the initial testing of this phone on the locked carrier. And if there are no hiccups in the final testing, it will start taking pre-orders for the device on April 18, with sales beginning on May 16.

Verizon, however, hasn’t yet revealed the pricing details of the phone, but it’s expected to cost somewhat similar to the South Korean version. The device costs costs 1.39 million won (~$1,220) for the 256GB model, and 1.55 million won (~$1,360) for the 512GB model in Samsung’s home country. Difference in 5G plans pricing, however, may affect the cost of the device.

AT&T also has mobile 5G services in a few cities, while Sprint is planning to roll out its 5G services next month. The carriers will sell the Galaxy S10 5G later in the year.

Samsung’s Q1 2019 earnings guidance suggests a 60% drop in profit

Samsung just released its earnings guidance for the first quarter of 2019, and things don’t look good. The company estimates a 60 percent year-on-year decline in operating profit in the three months ended March. Samsung was already expecting this steep decline, and had issued an unprecedented warning for investors of bad news on the way.

Samsung recorded its highest ever profits in Q3 2018, but weak demand of memory chips has since hurt the company badly. It suffered a 29 percent decline in operating profit in the last quarter of 2018.

Samsung’s worst slump for four years

In a regulatory filing, Samsung estimated sales worth 52 trillion won (about $45.7 billion) during Q1 2019. This is down 11.86 percent from 59 trillion won (~$51.87 billion) in the previous quarter, and down 14.13 percent from 60.56 trillion won (~$53.24 billion) a year earlier. Samsung suffered even bigger drop in operating profit. With an estimated profit of 6.2 trillion won (~$5.45 billion), the company is looking at a 60 percent decline from 15.64 trillion won (~$13.74 billion) in Q1 2018.

According to Bloomberg, this is Samsung’s biggest slump since a similar drop in the third quarter of 2014. Declining prices of memory chips, and lower demand for OLED displays are causing this slump. Samsung has already started reacting to it by putting more focus on non-memory chips and foundry business.

The company recently begun mass producing its 5G chipsets. Samsung would also be hoping the Galaxy S10 5G and the Galaxy Fold to bring a change in its fortune. The former is now on pre-sale in South Korea, whereas the latter will be available starting April 26.

Galaxy A90 will also come with Samsung’s new 25W Fast Charger

The Galaxy A90 is shaping up to be something of an experimental device for Samsung. It’s said to have a pop-up front-facing camera, which extends then rotates the rear-facing shooter then rotates to focus on what’s happening on the user-side, as well as a Crystal Sound-like solution, which sends sound waves through the screen; eliminating the need for a front-facing speaker.

So, it looks like the Galaxy A90 will nudge the envelope in terms of design. But will it do the same on the performance front? Not quite, according to Weibo tipster Martian V, who claims it will have a 6.7-inch FHD+ OLED screen, an unannounced Snapdragon 700-series CPU, a tri-camera (48MP + 8MP + ToF) and a 3700mAh cell, complete with a 25W Fast Charger à la forthcoming Galaxy S10 5G.

With that in mind, the Galaxy A90 is expected to sit beneath the Galaxy S10e, which has a more robust Snapdragon 855 CPU, in Samsung’s smartphone line up; hinting it’s an experimental, one-off handset that has been designed to test market response to a new design concept ahead of a launch on a flagship device, or it could just be another way for Samsung to showcase its engineering prowess.
