This WhatsApp feature is no longer exclusive to Samsung phones

A few months ago, WhatsApp brought the ability to transfer chat history from an iOS device to an Android device. However, that feature was exclusive to Samsung’s Android smartphones for a limited time. Now, the feature is being released to other Android smartphones.

This announcement was made via Google’s official blog post. Users moving from an iPhone to an Android device can quickly transfer their WhatsApp chat history using a Lighting To USB Type-C cable and a QR code. However, the feature currently only works on phones running Android 12. It means that Pixel smartphones running Android 12 can start using this feature.

No other company, including Samsung, has released the stable Android 12 update to their smartphones yet. However, many Android OEMs will start releasing the Android 12 update to their compatible smartphones by the end of this year, and more people can start using the WhatsApp chat history migration tool officially.

Before the arrival of this feature, users switching from Android to iOS or vice versa would need to depend on third-party tools like MobileTrans.

Samsung is opening up Tizen OS to other TV brands

Samsung unveiled a lot of new stuff related to its software and services at the ongoing SDC 21 event. Alongside announcing improvements to Bixby, Samsung Health, Samsung Knox, SmartThings, and Tizen, the company also said that it is opening up Tizen OS to other TV brands.

TV manufacturers can now use Samsung’s Tizen TV Platform Licensing service at a minimal cost and bring Tizen OS to their smart TVs. Apart from the operating system, they will also gain access to the famous Tizen branding and a chance to promote their products at major external events. The platform also has access to various audio and video streaming services, including Apple Music, Apple TV+, Disney+, Hulu, Netflix, Prime Video, Spotify, YouTube, YouTube Kids, and YouTube TV.

Various TV brands have already been offering smart TVs that use Amazon’s Fire TV and Google’s Android TV operating systems. Recently, even LG and Roku started allowing third-party TV brands to use their smart TV platform, and now, Samsung is joining the race to solidify its position as the market leader in the smart TV space.

It is still unclear if any TV brand has shown interest in using Tizen on its smart TVs. However, the platform is one of the most feature-rich ones out there, and it could attract multiple TV brands that don’t have their own operating system.

Samsung is entering the cloud gaming space, again

During its ongoing Samsung Developer Conference 2021 event, Samsung announced new features and improvements to Bixby, One UI, Samsung Health, Samsung Knox, SmartThings, and Tizen. The company also announced that it is developing a cloud gaming platform of its own, and it will be available on smart TVs running Tizen.

While the company didn’t divulge many details on this development, Samsung’s executive explained that customers could enjoy high-quality games on Tizen OS-powered smart TVs without purchasing high-end gaming hardware (such as gaming PC or gaming console). Moreover, game developers will also be able to integrate features specific to Samsung’s smart TVs for a more immersive experience.

This is not the first time Samsung is diving into the cloud gaming space. In 2012, the company had partnered with Gaikai to offer cloud game streaming on its TVs, and the service was launched in the beta phase. However, Gaikai was then acquired by Sony, which then turned it into PlayStation Now.

The cloud gaming segment has seen a massive rise over the past couple of years, and major tech brands, including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Sony, have their cloud gaming services. Samsung will have to compete with those brands. The company has not announced when it plans to launch the service.

Samsung announces various improvements to Tizen OS for smart TVs at SDC 21

Alongside improvements to Bixby, SmartThings, and Samsung Knox, Samsung also announced improvements to Tizen OS for smart TVs. During the ongoing Samsung Developer Conference 2021, the South Korean firm said it wants to consolidate its leadership in the TV segment with more intelligent software and deeper integration with its other services.

Improved video calling, Samsung Health, and gaming on Tizen-powered smart TVs

Keeping its ‘Screens Everywhere, Screen For All’ vision in mind, the company is introducing newer experiences to Tizen OS for smart TVs. Samsung has developed a better video calling experience on TVs in partnership with Google via AI-enabled focus and zoom features. Samsung Health can now use a webcam attached to a Tizen-powered smart TV to track user movements and provide real-time feedback during workouts.

Samsung’s mid-range and high-end smart TVs already have various gaming-related features, including AMD FreeSync Premium, a 120Hz refresh rate, auto low-latency mode, and Game Bar. For an even better gaming experience, the company is bringing automated settings for low latency and HDR10+ calibration.

Tizen For Business is a new platform for managing interactive digital signage displays

For businesses, the South Korean firm will soon launch the Tizen For Business platform. It supports interactive e-boards in schools, kiosks at malls, and displays at airports, restaurants, stores, and subways. It will offer easy-to-use display management portals that businesses can use for real-time monitoring and remotely controlling screens. It also allows quickly applying settings to multiple devices with just one touch.

Tizen is already the world’s biggest smart TV platform, and with the upcoming improvements, it will have more depth in its arsenal to compete with Amazon’s Fire TV, Google’s Android TV, and LG’s webOS platforms.

Samsung’s new Massive MIMO Radio is a one-box solution for 5G networks

Samsung is one of the largest networking equipment vendors in the world. The company achieved this status by staying on top of the latest technologies and providing cost-effective solutions at scale. And today, Samsung announced a new Massive MIMO radio capable of combining C-Band and CRBS bands into a single unit.

The C-Band/CRBS Dual-band 16T16R Massive MIMO Radio is a one-box solution that Samsung claims will allow operators to add support for two mid-band spectrums with more ease. The C-Band spectrum is meant to boost 5G capabilities, access, and coverage, while the CBRS band can bring 5G to enterprise networks and underserved areas.

The module weighs approximately 30lbs (14kg) and features the in-house Massive MIMO 5G chipset that Samsung unveiled earlier this year. It promises 70% higher energy efficiency compared to Samsung’s previous solutions.

As for the benefits of having a one-box solution, they are plenty. Most importantly, an all-in-one box allows operators to reduce their footprint, lower energy consumption, and ultimately cut down on installation and operation costs. According to Samsung, the C-Band/CBRS Dual-band 16T16R Massive MIMO Radio will be available commercially in North America in the second half of 2022.

It’s only a matter of time before SmartThings becomes the go-to IoT platform

One of the hurdles IoT device manufacturers have to overcome is that the ecosystem is not open enough for what it’s supposed to achieve. IoT devices should be able to interconnect and communicate seamlessly, but they’re often limited by different connectivity standards, software incompatibility, and other such things. Samsung wants to change this with the integration of Matter into the SmartThings ecosystem.

Matter was unveiled earlier this year as a new connectivity standard for IoT. It’s a joint effort between more than 180 companies, and Samsung’s SmartThings platform was among the founding members.

Matter guarantees interoperability between devices that support the standard, and the initiative aims to give customers more choices when they’re looking to purchase new IoT devices.

Matter will be found in more devices IoT next year

Samsung announced at SDC 21 that the Matter protocol is now being added to the SmartThings platform, which can already use the Zigbee and Z-Wave protocols. With the addition of Matter, Samsung wants SmartThings to be the one-stop platform for IoT device customers.

The addition of Matter to SmartThings will allow many developers to invest more time improving their products rather than spending it on porting features to a new platform that might have different protocols.

In other words, IoT is meant to bridge connectivity hurdles across different types of devices, and with Matter, Samsung’s SmartThings platform took one big leap forward to achieving that vision. For customers, all of this means that they’ll soon be able to connect a wider range of Samsung and non-Samsung IoT devices to the SmartThings Hub.

Matter will be included in multiple products next year with the goal of making IoT compatibility issues a thing of the past.

Samsung makes smart home management easier with SmartThings Build

Samsung announced SDC 21 (Samsung Developer Conference 2021) earlier this month and confirmed that former smartphone chief DJ Koh is one of the event’s main speakers. The company didn’t go into many details regarding the event’s main talking points, but SDC 21 went live today, and we now know that the future of IoT and the SmartThings platform were among the main topics of conversation.

More specifically, today, Samsung unveiled SmartThings Build. It’s the latest addition to the SmartThings platform and was designed to help property management companies and real estate developers create and manage IoT-enabled living spaces across multiple properties at scale.

Creating smarter living spaces with SmartThings Build

Smart home features are becoming increasingly important for residents. According to Samsung citing a recent survey, 75% of people (who participated in the survey) claim that they prefer places with smart home capabilities, such as smart lights, smart cameras, and smart appliances.

All of these devices can become difficult to manage at scale, but SmartThings Build gives property managers easy access to maintenance and diagnostic tools. The platform can automatically generate maintenance tickets and allows managers to grant or revoke access to IoT devices remotely.

Aside from easier IoT management through SmartThings Build, Samsung’s connected platform can improve energy efficiency and lower the cost of bills by allowing homeowners to monitor water and electrical consumption, and more.

Samsung has partnered with numerous system management companies for SmartThings Build, including Entrata, iQuue, Aeotec, CommScope RUCKUS, Project Etopia, Picerne, Greystar, JM, ViewHomes, and VolkerWessels.

Has the Galaxy S21 aged well? Our long-term review is live on YouTube

It’s been roughly nine months since Samsung introduced the Galaxy S21 series at the beginning of 2021. With the Galaxy S22 series seemingly around the corner, it’s high time for us to look back at the time we spent with the Galaxy S21 and offer our long-term review of this device.

Did the base Galaxy S21 model age well? How exactly does it feel after using it for more than half a year? After all, it’s the only model from the S21 trio to have a plastic back as opposed to a glass build, and in some ways, it almost feels like a Fan Edition device. Has the lack of WQHD resolution become a more noticeable issue over the past three quarters? You can find out the answers in our latest Galaxy S21 long-term review at SamMobile TV. Check the video below.

Some things age better than others

In short, some of the characteristics that seemed like issues at first turned out not to be as annoying as people initially thought. The plastic back has a high enough quality to be mistaken with glass during regular usage, and the display remains fantastic, even if it can’t match other flagships in terms of pixel count. The camera does feel more and more like it’s missing proper optical zoom, but it’s quite decent otherwise.

The lack of a microSD card was another non-issue for us, though it’s subjective, and we didn’t need to transfer files via microSD very often. It’s also worth noting that we’ve been using the 256GB model, which is enough for most users.

Check our Galaxy S21 long-term review below for more details, and don’t forget to leave a comment and join our social media groups. You can also check our original Galaxy S21 review in case you missed it and you’re looking for a closer look at the specs.

Are you a Galaxy S21 owner? Did you purchase the phone at launch? If so, how do you feel about the Galaxy S21 after nine months of using it?

First bits of evidence of the Galaxy M33 5G’s existence emerge

Samsung is already preparing a few new 5G low-cost smartphones for release in 2022, and the Galaxy M33 5G seems to be among them. According to our colleagues at GalaxyClub, the phone in question appears to carry model number SM-M336B, and it will likely have similar specs to the unannounced Galaxy A33.

As usual, the Galaxy M33 5G could go on sale in markets where the Galaxy A33 5G won’t. They’ll probably look alike and use the same internal hardware for the most part, but as yet, there’s not much information to go by regarding either the Galaxy A33 or Galaxy M33.

It’s logical to assume that the Galaxy M33 5G will at least ship with an improved chipset compared to the Galaxy M32 5G, though time will tell. It’s also unclear if Samsung will only release a 5G version of the Galaxy M33 or if some markets will get LTE (and presumably a different non-5G chipset). Similarly, the company could also have plans for a Galaxy F33, though there are no signs of it yet.

We’ll try digging up more information about the Galaxy M33 5G by the time it goes on sale, which we assume could happen anytime in the first half of 2022. You can sign up to our social media channels if you don’t want to miss out on anything Samsung.

Galaxy S22 Ultra camera specs confirmed in a new leak

The Galaxy S22 Ultra was earlier rumored to feature a 200MP camera sensor from Olympus. However, it turned out to be just that, a rumor. A few days ago, it was reported that Samsung will continue to use a 108MP primary camera sensor with some improvements in terms of zoom. Now, complete camera specifications of the upcoming phone have been revealed.

According to tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce), The Galaxy S22 Ultra will feature a slightly improved 108MP primary camera sensor (1/33-inch) with 0.8µm pixels and an F1.8 aperture. Apparently, it is a slightly modified version of the ISOCELL HM3, which is being used in the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

The upcoming flagship phone will reportedly use a 12MP ultrawide camera sensor from Sony (1/2.55-inch), featuring 1.4µm pixels and an F2.2 aperture. The Galaxy S22 Ultra will also use two 10MP (1/3.52-inch) Sony sensors, one with a 3x optical zoom lens and the other with a 10x optical zoom lens.

If this information is correct, there won’t be any major camera hardware improvement compared to the Galaxy S21 Ultra. And most of the improvements may come from software optimizations and processing algorithms. Despite being eight months old, the Galaxy S21 Ultra still holds its own in the camera department compared to newer flagship phones from rival brands. However, it will be difficult for Samsung to hold onto the lead, with rival firms opting for better hardware.

Would you be satisfied with the Galaxy S22 Ultra if the leaked information is correct? Let us know in the comments section below.

Samsung will soon finalize semiconductor chip factory investment in the US

Samsung has been eyeing to invest around $17 billion to build a new semiconductor chip factory in the US. However, its plans haven’t been finalized yet, leading to questions from the media, investors, and industry experts. The company has now announced that it will soon finalize the plans for its new chip factory.

Kim Ki-nam, Vice Chairman & CEO of Samsung’s Device Solutions Division, said that the company is trying to make a decision regarding its next chip plant in the US as soon as possible. He said that it takes time to make all the important decisions such as the factory location, infrastructure required, personnel, and incentives from the government. This information was revealed during the ongoing Korea Electronics Show 2021 underway in Seoul, South Korea.

Samsung leader Lee Jae-yong, who was recently released from prison, is expected to visit the US sometime next month to finalize the site for the upcoming chip plant. Right now, the city of Taylor in Texas is considered to be the front-runner in the race to get Samsung’s investment. Other cities in the race include Arizona, New York, and Austin (Texas).

Another delay could be from the US Department of Commerce. It is being reported that the US government is demanding information related to inventories from global chipmakers, including Samsung. Kim said the company is “calmly” preparing answers to the request, and things will soon move forward.

Galaxy S22 and S22+ design taking inspiration from the iPhone 13?

With Samsung’s flagship smartphone launches for 2021 out of the way, fans can now turn their attention towards the Galaxy S22 series. The company is due to launch the new lineup early next year.

It hasn’t confirmed anything about the new devices at this point in time. However, there’s no shortage of rumors and leaks concerning the devices. The latest suggests that the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ design will take some inspiration from the iPhone 13.

Galaxy S22 design might take inspiration from the iPhone 13

According to the Twitter-based leakster @UniverseIce, the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ will essentially look like the iPhone 13 without a notch. Samsung uses the Infinity-O display for its devices which is why they don’t have a notch in the first place.

It’s further claimed that both devices are going to have a flat display panel. This isn’t a shocking revelation as flat displays have already been rumored for the devices. The new flagships may also have symmetrical bezels to finish off the look.

The leaked dummy units of the Galaxy S22 that we saw a little while back pointed to a similar design language for the upcoming handsets. So it’s quite possible that the observations made by the leakster might have some truth to them.

We still have a few months to go until Samsung makes these handsets official so things could change by then. It was previously expected that the Galaxy S22 series would be launched in January 2022. However, we now hear that the Galaxy S22 launch is scheduled for February 2022.

South Korean court fines Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong for illegal drug use

Samsung leader Lee Jae-yong has been facing legal woes over the past few years for various reasons. After getting released from prison a few weeks ago, he has been fined by a South Korean court for the illegal use of drugs.

The Seoul district court convicted Lee for the illegal use of the sedative propofol and charged him with a fine of KRW 70 million (around $60,055). The court also ordered a penalty fee of KRW 17 million (around $14,566) as he was convicted of the Narcotics Control Act violations. It was found that Samsung’s leader used propofol illegally 41 times at a cosmetic clinic in Seoul between January 2015 to May 2020.

In June 2021, prosecutors indicted Lee on the charges of taking propofol for purposes other than medical treatment. Propofol is said to have the same high levels of addiction and dependency as other illegal drugs and is highly prohibited. The court noted that the dosage taken by Lee was quite high, and a person of his social stature should be “compliant with the law and serve as an exemplary person.

The South Korean court also ordered Lee “to break free of propofol and become a healthy and exemplary parent to children.” Lee, South Korea’s richest person, has spent some time in jail as he was sentenced to prison for 2.5 years for bribing an associate of former South Korean President Park Geun-hye. The current South Korean president recently pardoned him.
