Galaxy Tab S3 software update brings March 2019 security patch

Samsung has released a new software update for the Galaxy Tab S3 in some countries. The update brings the March 2019 security patch to the device and is rolling out in Peru and Colombia with software version T825UBU2BSC2. The Wi-Fi-only variant doesn’t seem to be getting the same update yet, but it should be joining the party sooner rather than later.

The usual security update with nothing else of note

The changelog for the update doesn’t mention any specific improvements and changes other than the March security patch, which shouldn’t be surprising for a two-year-old tablet. The big stuff–including the beautiful new One UI interface–will come with the Android Pie update later this year, although the wait for that update will be a long one as Samsung has the Tab S3 slated to get Android Pie in August in most markets. The Galaxy Tab S4, meanwhile, was supposed to get Pie in March, but Samsung has clearly missed that deadline.

To grab the latest Galaxy Tab S3 update, you can hit the Download updates manually option in the Software update menu of the tablet’s settings. If it’s not yet available for you over the air, you can download the firmware for the new update from our database and flash it using a Windows PC.

Galaxy S10 uses a ‘cropped’ view for selfies in third-party applications

Samsung bundles a fantastic wide-angle front-facing camera on the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S10e; however, they aren’t able to capture an outspread frame in all scenarios, it has been revealed — the South Korean firm locks down the field-of-view for aftermarket applications.

What we mean by that is that the API (that’s the level of code that provides developers with access to core device functions) Samsung created for the front-facing camera, which is used by several social networks and communication services — like Facebook, Instagram and Skype — crops the frame.

It’s unclear why Samsung made this decision, but some have speculated it was on the cusp of a limitation imposed by Google that restricts the maximum field of view aftermarket Android applications can tap into for the front-facing camera to create a unified experience across all devices.

Samsung’s kept quiet about the whole ordeal

The reason could also be a lot more straightforward: utilising the camera’s wide field-of-view could require extra leg work from developers, who’ve been lax at implementing it. But again, that’s just a theory — we’ve reached out to Samsung for comment and will update this article when we hear back.

PSA: The Galaxy S10e doesn’t have a heart rate sensor

No, the Galaxy S10e doesn’t have a heart rate sensor. This is something we here at SamMobile missed because, frankly, the heart rate sensor has been such a common part of Samsung’s flagships for so many years that we automatically assumed it would be there on all Galaxy S10 models. The S10e does have a small black hole with some kind of chip inside next to the rear camera flash, and we assumed the S10e’s heart rate sensor is partly hidden unlike the S10’s and S10+’.

But that is not the case, and the Samsung Health app doesn’t have a heart rate tracker on the Galaxy S10e. The lack of a heart rate sensor is no doubt a sacrifice made by Samsung to achieve the $750 price tag for the smallest Galaxy S10. However, those who regularly upgrade to Samsung’s flagship phones and use the heart rate sensor might be in for a surprise if they go into a store to purchase the Galaxy S10e and take the presence of a heart rate sensor for granted. This is also why Samsung was unable to add a notification light for the Wireless PowerShare feature on the Galaxy S10 lineup to the Galaxy S10e with the latest software update.

Some apps let you measure heart rate with the camera

You can still measure your heart rate on the Galaxy S10e by downloading apps such as this, which use the phone’s camera to do the job. The dedicated heart rate sensors on phones and smartwatches work by shining a light on your finger and measuring the blood flow beneath the skin, and the camera can also be used to do this. You risk smudging the camera lens and the results aren’t as accurate, but it doesn’t deviate much from what you get with a heart rate sensor. Of course, if heart rate monitoring is a serious part of your fitness lifestyle, then a dedicated heart rate sensor is always going to be better.

Do you use the heart rate sensor on Galaxy flagships? Did you buy the Galaxy S10e thinking it would have a heart rate sensor only to be disappointed to find out it doesn’t? Drop a comment and let us know!

Galaxy S10 design team explains how it ‘created a Galaxy for everyone’

From being mocked for its utilitarian designs to turning into a benchmark for premium smartphone design, Samsung has come a long way in the last few years. It showed its design prowess once again with the recently launched Galaxy S10 series that has been receiving praise from all quarters. The Korean company took its critically-acclaimed flagship design from last year and refined it further to stay ahead of the rivals.

In an interview published on Samsung Newsroom, the design team behind the Galaxy S10 lineup sheds some details on the thinking and the process that went into making the latest flagships. Much of what is published is vague and PR speak, but it also reveals a bit about the thought process behind the design of the new flagships.

The Galaxy S10’s design motto is ‘Radical, Magical’

The team says the central motto behind the Galaxy S10 design is “Radical, Magical.” It used premium materials, attractive colors, and sleek design to make the Galaxy S10 feel like a “radical change with a magical feel.” It focused on “prism colors” to enhance the gradient effect by generating “a vast spectrum of colors.”

“To create Prism White, we overlaid around 1,000 sheets of nanofilms together, each with different reflectivity. It was especially difficult to fine-tune which colors would stand out the most,” said Duyeong Choi from Design Team’s CMF Group that oversees color. The team also introduced bold new colors like Canary Yellow and Flamingo Pink to appeal to the Millennials and Gen Z.

Moving beyond glass, Samsung also introduced luxurious ceramic backs for select Galaxy S10+ variants. The team says the ceramic finish is a 200 hour-long process and offers increased durability and scratch resistance, some of which we have already experienced in actual use. They also talk about the position of the front camera and how it enhances the overall design with minimal bezels.

The Galaxy S10’s design may not look like a big leap forward at first glance, but the seemingly minor improvements it brings to the table are hard to achieve as easy gains in design are over. “In smartphone design, continual innovation is no easy task, but we are always listening to users, and are committed to pushing the boundaries of design to create Galaxy devices that everyone can enjoy,” said Seungho Jang from the Flagship Product Design Group in the Design Team.

Galaxy S10 heart rate sensor now lights up for reverse wireless charging

Samsung’s second software update for the Galaxy S10 lineup brought with it improvements to Wireless PowerShare, and it turns out that the company has made a very useful change. The heart rate sensor on the back of the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ will now light up to indicate that Wireless PowerShare is being used. Notice that we don’t mention the Galaxy S10e here, and that’s because the S10e’s heart rate sensor is almost completely hidden behind the camera assembly.

Only for Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ owners

Those who have updated their Galaxy S10 or S10+ will now see the phone’s heart rate sensor light up to indicate various stages of charging. When you enable Wireless PowerShare, you’ll see a blinking blue light. Once a device is placed on the back and actual reverse wireless charging begins, the light turns a stable red. Once the device you’re charging reaches 100 percent charge, you’ll simply see the heart rate sensor go dark.

It’s good to see Samsung making minor improvements to the Galaxy S10 with software updates. We can expect more such changes in the future, including improvements to the in-display fingerprint sensor as the company has promised and fixes for issues like high battery drain that some users are facing. For now, don’t forget to update to the newest software by going into the Software update menu of your Galaxy S10’s settings and tapping Download updates manually.

Wondering what Wireless PowerShare is and how you can use it on your Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, or Galaxy S10+? We have all the details right here and also a slew of Galaxy S10 tips and tricks to help you get the most out of your device.

Galaxy S10 is the best smartphone yet, Russian quality check concludes

The Galaxy S10, S10+, and the Galaxy S10e have been recognized as the three best smartphones in a research conducted by Roskachestvo, the Russian non-profit organization for quality checking. Samsung’s latest flagships replace the Galaxy Note 9 from the top spot.

Seven Samsung phones in top ten

Roskachestvo, together with the International Consumer Research Association (ICRT), has presented an updated list of the best smartphones. The organization’s analysts studied 25 new smartphones that were launched in the last few months. The results were combined with those of the 334 phones tested earlier. The Galaxy S10, S10+, and the Galaxy S10e beat all of them to occupy the top three spots.

The smartphones are evaluated in more than 250 quality and safety parameters, such as durability, functionality, maximum electromagnetic radiation (SAR), battery and processor performance, and sound quality. At the same time, security parameters, like those associated with unlocking of the device, are also evaluated. The test is carried out at Müller-BBM in Germany. It is the largest test center in Europe.

As of now, Samsung smartphones occupy seven of the top ten positions in the ranking. Galaxy Note 9 is in fourth, followed by the Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ and the Galaxy S8 in seventh, eighth and ninth places, respectively. The Apple iPhone XS Max, Apple iPhone XS, and the Huawei Mate 20 Pro make up the top ten. Samsung devices, however, are languishing far below in the list of devices with best camera performance. The Galaxy S10+ and the S10 are in the seventh and eighth places, whereas the Galaxy S10e finds itself tenth in the list. Rest of the spots in the top ten are occupied by Apple devices.

Roskachestvo is currently testing another batch of devices, which includes the Galaxy Fold. Results of this test will be published in May 2019. A detailed description of the methodology and a complete list of parameters are available on Roskachestvo’s website.

Five best cases for your Galaxy S9

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and the S9+ are truly amazing devices. The best case for your Samsung Galaxy S9 should be something which shows the true majesty of the device. It should also be strong and sturdy enough to provide good protection against any possible accidents. Thus, in order to help you figure out the right case for your phone, we have gathered a list of the five best Samsung Galaxy S9 cases that you can buy online.

SamMobile cover

We’re a bit biased towards this one! SamMobile offers a free case to its premium members. The case is available in black with a nice matte finish. Our entire team uses it on their Samsung phones and absolutely loves it. It’s a heavy duty case that will protect your device from dust and scratches. Oh, and did we mention, it’s free for our premium members!

Samsung Clear View Cover

samsung clear view case

Let’s kick things off with the Clear View cover from Samsung. It is available in a large variety of colors. What’s more is that the case with its premium build also lends well to protecting your precious S9 thanks to the back, front and side coverage that it provides. While it may not be the most heavy-duty case in the world, it does guard your screen and keeps your phone’s back nice and scratch-free. The front cover can also quickly transform into a handy media viewing stand making it ideal for watching movies hands-free anytime. Where this case really excels, however, is with its smart functionality. The semi-transparent view through the front cover will allow you to quickly see the time, date and any incoming notifications that you might have.

OtterBox Symmetry Series Case

otterBox s9 case

This is arguably OtterBox’s most popular case series to date, the Symmetry Case. Comprising of two fused layers, the Symmetry series represents all of OtterBox’s famed qualities but in a much slimmer package. With all the military-grade drop protection you could wish for the Symmetry series is sure to keep your S9 looking good for as long as possible. The raised lip also helps guard your screen against drops on flat surfaces. So even though it doesn’t feature a built-in protector, it will still help keep your precious Infinity display looking crystal clear.

The overall look may not win any awards but the simplistic nature will appeal to many. I also really like the smooth incline on the camera port opening as this makes using the relocated fingerprint scanner extremely convenient. With all the branding and top-notch build quality that you’ve come to expect from OtterBox, the Symmetry Series for the Samsung Galaxy S9 still represents a top pick for any owner looking for rugged protection for their device without adding much heft to it.

We move back to Samsung now with our fourth pick in this lineup which comes in the form of their official Alcantara Cover. Again, available in an impressive array of color options, the Alcantara offers a premium look and feel for your S9 that you just won’t get anywhere else. The Alcantara finish runs throughout the case for an incredibly smooth finish that’s great to hold. This sleek styling is broken up neatly with the use of subtle color. This finish also runs into the inside of the case, providing some nice soft cushioning for the back of your phone so that it can avoid getting scratched easily. Samsung has installed Onyx cinema LEDs in 16 countries

Samsung unveiled the Onyx LED cinema screen back in July 2017 at the Lotte Cinema World Tower in South Korea. Two years on, the revolutionary cinema screens have now made their debut in 16 countries across the world. The Onyx LED cinema screens bring 4K image quality, HDR capabilities, highest brightness, and more contrast to the big screen, offering an immersive viewing experience to the audience.

China has the most theaters with Onyx LED screens

Following installations in its home country, Samsung brought the Onyx LED cinema screens to several overseas markets over the years. Thailand was the first overseas market to get this next-gen solution. The Onyx screens have since made their debut in India, China, Malaysia, the US, as well as several European countries, including Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France and Spain. In December last year, Samsung installed the world’s largest Onyx LED cinema screen in China. Some of the cinemas in South Korea, the US, China, Germany and India have 3D Onyx LED screens.

As of now, Onyx screens are installed at 32 different theaters in 16 countries across the world. China has the most Onyx screen theaters with seven, followed by India with five. South Korea and Malaysia have three each. A Samsung official said that the company is looking to introduce the Onyx LED cinema screens to more theaters around the world in the coming months.

Samsung is expected to unveil new technologies for the Onyx LED solution at CinemaCon 2019. The company may also strike a few partnerships during the event. The world’s biggest film industry fair takes place in Caesars Palace in Las Vegas next week.

Samsung launches new 8-inch Galaxy Tab A with S Pen support

We reported exclusively four months ago that Samsung was working on a new Galaxy Tab A tablet with model number SM-P205. The company today announced a brand new tablet which has the same model number. It’s an 8-inch Galaxy Tab A which comes with support for the S Pen.

Officially called the Galaxy Tab A with S Pen 8.0″, this tablet has an 8-inch 1920×1200 pixel resolution TFT display.

The addition of the S Pen makes this a compelling option for customers who have wished for stylus support on Samsung’s smaller tablets. It’s not the newer S Pen that you get with the Galaxy Note 9, though, so don’t count on using it as a remote. The tablet’s product page mentions that users don’t have to charge the S Pen. The new stylus does need to be charged and that’s handled by its supercapacitor.

It’s a fairly mid-range affair. The new Galaxy Tab A has an Exynos 7904 processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB storage with microSD card support. There’s also an 8-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera, a USB Type-C connector, 4,200mAh battery and support for LTE.

The official listing doesn’t mention which version of Android this tablet is running. It would most likely be on Pie with Samsung’s One UI on top. We have previously revealed that it will be available in black and grey colour options. Pricing has not yet been announced.

Can my Galaxy Watch take my temperature? It’s not that simple…

A lot of people are interested in finding out if they can take a reading of their body temperature with the Galaxy Watch. Samsung’s new smartwatch is the true successor to the Gear S3. It came out last year and Samsung did a very good job of improving everything about the device.

The Galaxy Watch got many new features as well. Samsung particularly focused on improving health and fitness-focused features. We said in our Galaxy Watch review that Samsung had nearly perfected the smartwatch with this device. The significant updates led many to expect that it would be possible to take a body temperature reading with the device. It might sound simple enough since it has long been possible to measure heart rate using a smartwatch. Blood temperature is a different ballgame, though.

Can my Galaxy Watch take my temperature?

No, the Galaxy Watch cannot take your temperature. It does not have the hardware onboard which would allow the device to do that. So while you can do a lot with your Galaxy Watch, checking your body temperature is not one of them.

It’s a very capable smartwatch otherwise. The Galaxy Watch is capable of tracking up to 40 different activities. It can automatically start tracking six exercises such as running and cycling in addition to heart rate and sleep patterns. There’s even an option to track your stress levels by detecting increased heart rates over a period of time. If the watch detects that, it will suggest that you take deep breaths to bring the heart rate down.

It’s a different story when it comes to body temperature. You can’t do that on a Wear OS device since the underlying Android API doesn’t allow for a body temperature sensor yet. The Galaxy Watch isn’t powered by Wear OS, it runs Tizen 4.0, but that doesn’t mean it can do that. There are other concerns that may have prevented Samsung from offering this functionality despite not having to deal with platform limitations.

The difference between body temperature and skin temperature also has to be recognized. The former refers to the physical state in which the bodily functions operate at their optimal level. The latter is simply the temperature of your skin which can change based on different factors, the simplest of which is outside temperature. Your skin temperature will go up if you’re out in the sun for too long as opposed to comfortably seated in an airconditioned room.

The thing about body temperature is that it can vary from one zone of the body to another. That’s why there’s a slightly different threshold for fever depending upon whether the reading is oral, axillary, tympanic, etc. The assumption here being that the body temperature reading on the wrist would be different and might be considerably lower on account of it being an extremity of the body.

There may also be a higher chance of an inaccurate reading due to several other factors. For example, a temperature sensor on the smartwatch may not be insulated from the outside. That would bring environmental factors into play which could throw off the reading. So while it may be technically possible to do this, the potential for inaccuracy may have prevented Samsung from offering this functionality with the Galaxy Watch.

It may be a different story in the future. Advanced technology might make it possible for us to quickly take accurate body temperature readings from our smartwatches. As of right now, it’s not possible to do that with a Galaxy Watch.

Samsung resumes Galaxy S10 March security update roll out

Samsung released the March 2019 security update for the Galaxy S10 series three days ago. The changelog mentioned that the update also brought improvements for the Wireless PowerShare feature.

We found out later that the update had been pulled for the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10+. Samsung didn’t say why it had halted the roll out but it presumably may have been because of a bug. Whatever it was, it seems to have been fixed because Samsung has now resumed the roll out.

There’s a new firmware version out now for the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+. They’re receiving G970FXXU1ASCA, G973FXXU1ASCA, and G975FXXU1ASCA in Germany, the UK and France respectively. The updates are now available over-the-air and you can also download them from our firmware section by clicking on the relevant device name.

The changelog is exactly the same as the previous update. It only mentions improvements for the Camera stability and Wireless PowerShare performance. Whatever Samsung has fixed with this release has likely been lumped into the usual slew of “bug fixes.”

Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ owners across the globe should start to receive the new firmware in the near future. The roll out has begun over-the-air but it may take some time for the update to go live for everyone. You can also check for the update manually on your device by going to the Settings » Software update menu and tapping on Download updates manually.

The Galaxy S11 must be Samsung’s flagship ‘camera’ phone

After the announcement of Huawei’s P30 series, I’ve come to one conclusion: The Galaxy S11 must be a camera-focused flagship. The gap between Samsung’s and Huawei’s camera tech is getting a bit too big. While Samsung led the industry a few years ago, Huawei has begun to steal the Korean giant’s thunder in the last couple of years. With the Galaxy S11, it’s a must for Samsung to close the gap or even do better and retake the lead.

You might think it’s crazy to be talking about the Galaxy S11 when the Galaxy S10 has just been released. And yes, you’d be right. It’s not that we are jealous, but we see Samsung is becoming complacent when it comes to camera technology. Samsung is mainly focusing on aspects like display and memory technology while improvements to the camera experience aren’t happening at the same pace.

When Samsung discontinued its NX lineup of cameras, we expected the company would integrate the talent behind the NX cameras into its mobile team. Sadly, that doesn’t seem to have really happened, and now that the Huawei P30 Pro is official, we feel Samsung has missed a major opportunity and has fallen behind.

Is Samsung in trouble?

Not yet. Most consumers are still shooting pictures on their phone in auto mode and sharing their images on social media. Only the pros truly need the spectacular camera on the P30 Pro, what with its 10x zoom capability and the ability to take superior night shots.

Still, the gap between Samsung and Huawei shouldn’t be this big on the camera front, especially when you consider the fact that the Huawei phones are using mostly software wizardry for the superior night photography, much like Google. It’s like owning a Lamborghini. You won’t use all of its power all of the time but it would be nice to know you have plenty of it in the boot.

I doubt most Galaxy S9/S9+ owners gave a hoot about the variable aperture camera. They were the first smartphones to have both a variable aperture and optical image stabilization. It really did set the 2018 flagship apart in the camera department compared to its rivals. Samsung’s supposed answer to Huawei and Google’s dedicated night camera modes with the Galaxy S10, meanwhile, is pretty much a dud. Thankfully, at least with hardware, there is some good news. Samsung is said to have acquired the company that supplies the optical zoom sensors to manufacturers like Oppo and Huawei, and we can expect to see those sensors on its future flagship devices.

And with Samsung mostly using the same smartphone design for two years before mixing things up, we also expect the Galaxy S11 will use a form factor similar to the Galaxy S10, so the company could focus on making the Galaxy S11’s cameras its biggest highlight and hype it up through the millions it spends on marketing and advertising its flagship smartphones. It would also be great to see some hints of those camera improvements on the Galaxy Note 10. Samsung tends to use the same camera sensors for its flagships in a particular year, which means no big improvements, but we can hope Samsung receives a wakeup call and changes that.

If not, Samsung has a year to make a comeback and show Google and Huawei who’s boss. Otherwise, the company may get into deeper problems, like losing considerable market share or losing the innovation tag that many still associate with the Samsung brand.

Should you buy a Google Pixel or Huawei P30 Pro?

Well, that’s up to you, but I believe you shouldn’t. Yes, Google’s update policy is excellent and gives you clean, unadulterated Android, but its design isn’t great. Yes, Huawei’s cameras are great, but will you use all the functions? I wouldn’t, and let’s not forget that the P30 Pro doesn’t have things like a 3.5 mm headphone jack, stereo speakers, or even mainstream microSD card support. Basically, the complete phone doesn’t exist yet, but we have our fingers crossed Samsung will do something about that with the Galaxy S11 or even the Galaxy Note 10.

Samsung has ensured that this charger can be used on the go. Setting it up is child’s play. To charge your phone you simply place over it. It is very durable, despite of its fragile looks. You can get this item in two colors: black and white. Both of the colors look classy. The Samsung wireless charging pad costs about 21 USD. The price is a bit higher, but its quality truly makes up for it.

Anker PowerWave Fast Wireless Charger Stand

anker powerwave wireless charger

Anker isn’t a smartphone manufacturer. However, this doesn’t stop from making one of the best wireless chargers out there in the market. Works with all Qi supported phones, but for the best experience a flagship phone would be needed. Anker PowerWave is well-known for being the most versatile wireless charger. It is very easy to set up. Placing it on the stand may seem to some a tad bit annoying. However, the charging speed is amazing!

Unlike many wireless chargers, Anker PowerWave is ‘case-friendly’. This means you don’t need to take off your phone’s case every time you charge it. It comes with an 18-month warranty, and their customer service is very friendly. You can charge your phone in landscape mode as well. This is awesome for people that like watching videos while charging their phones. Since it is one of the premium wireless chargers out there, its price is higher than most. It costs about 40 USD.

RAVPower wireless charger

RAVPower specializes on phone accessories, mostly chargers. This charging pad, for its price, is one of the best out there. It has design similar to Samsung. The sleek outlook and the tough built makes it suitable for rough use.

These abilities are packaged up under a restrictive innovation known as HyperAir. To be completely honest, these are standard things you will discover in any remote charger deserving at least some respect. Yet there’s something additional that HyperAir innovation does that makes it genuinely emerge: it is fit for recognizing your iPhone. That implies that when your iPhone is inside a base range, it begins to charge straight away. This is a great feature for IPhone users. This wireless charger is suitable for techies, and it has a competitive price of 15 USD.

Seneo Wireless Charger

Seneo wireless charger

Seneo is one of the apex brands in the charger industry. With having over 2 million users, it is no doubt that their products have grabbed attentions globally. The best feature of the wireless charger is how case friendly it is. It can charge your device no matter what casing it bears.

A downside is that this charging stand isn’t made for any other phone brands on the market. You should either have an iPhone or a Samsung. It has very futuristic design. Given the price of only 15 USD, its definitely worth looking in to.

PLESON Fast Wireless Charger

Pleson wireless charger

The greatest distinction among Pleson and different brands is the charging rate. The Pleson comes in at an astounding greatest rate of 13.5-watts. That is up to 1.4 occasions quicker than comparably valued chargers available. I additionally preferred the “intelligent identification design”.

The LED light turns green when the telephone is charging. It appears such a basic thing to design charging lights into these gadgets, however not every one of them do. You will likewise need to utilize either a QC 3.0 connector or the first connector that accompanies your Samsung telephone.

It is one of the most price effective phone out there in the market. It costs about 17 USD.

Samsung releases fold test video to underscore Galaxy Fold’s durability

With the Galaxy Fold priced at 2,000 euro, customers would certainly want the device to be durable. They may have some concerns given the new form factor that this device has. It’s Samsung’s first foldable smartphone after all.

The Galaxy Fold has an in-folding display with a proprietary hinge. Samsung claims that the Galaxy Fold holds up well for 200,000 folds. That’s 100 folds per day for five years, much longer than people keep their smartphones for. The company has now released a video of its fold test to drive home the point about its durability.

Galaxy Fold will be more durable than Huawei’s foldable phone

The short video, set to some upbeat music, shows a contraption that Samsung created to basically open and close the Galaxy Fold over and over again. We can see multiple units hooked up to the machine that are repeatedly being folded. That’s certainly one of the best ways to get a proper estimation of how long the device can survive.

It takes about a week for the machine to complete the 200,000 folds, a number that Samsung feels comfortable backing for durability. The Galaxy Fold will be better than Huawei’s foldable smartphone in this regard. Huawei rates its device for 100,000 folds.

Samsung is obviously revealed more information about the Galaxy Fold now as it gears up to launch the device. Its first foldable smartphone will be out in the United States on April 26. It will begin taking pre-orders in Europe on that day before releasing the device in 15 countries on May 3.

Galaxy S10 users in the US facing poor network strength on the device

A month after its release, problems on the Galaxy S10 have started to appear out of the woodwork. Last week, several reports popped up claiming that the Galaxy S10 fails to go into deep sleep, thus draining significant amount of battery juice. Now some new reports claim the devices are plagued with crippling signal strength issues.

Sprint appears to be the most affected carrier

The Samsung Community forum and Reddit is abuzz with complaints regarding signal strength issues on the Galaxy S10. The devices reportedly have reduced signal strength compared to other similar devices. Sprint, in particular, appears to the most affected carrier, though some AT&T and T-Mobile users are also reporting occasional reduced signal strength. Android Police did some tests and found that merely holding the phone “wrong” can affect the signal strength significantly.

Sprint has already acknowledged the issue, and said that it will be resolved with an upcoming software update. In fact, the carrier released an update for the Galaxy S10 series today. However, it’s not clear if it fixes the issue as the changelog doesn’t mention any such fix. Interestingly, a Sprint employee hinted about this update a few days ago saying if it doesn’t fix the connectivity issues, the only resolution will be to exchange the device.

Apparently, disabling Band 41 and 25 support temporarily fixes the issue on Sprint. The carrier, meanwhile, is suggesting users to do some basic troubleshooting, such as a Profile Update, a Power Cycle and a factory reset, before it will exchange the device or swap SIM cards.

Galaxy S10 lets you use Always On Display in landscape orientation

The Galaxy S10 comes with an option that lets users change the screen orientation for Always On Display (AOD). Samsung’s latest flagship was the first to come with One UI 1.1 out of the box, and compared to One UI 1.0 that we find on every device that was updated to Android Pie from Android 8.0 Oreo, One UI 1.1 comes with a couple of big new features such as Digital Wellbeing and Bixby Routines. Some minor changes and improvements to existing features are also included, like the ability to use Always On Display in landscape orientation.

On the Galaxy S10, along with devices like the Galaxy A30 and Galaxy A50 that run One UI 1.1, you can select the screen orientation for Always On Display from the feature’s settings. The option is a bit limited: You can only select between landscape and portrait and the system-wide screen orientation setting doesn’t apply to Always On Display. Also, you can’t tap on the Always On Display screen when it is active to change the orientation like you can change screen brightness; you always have to go into AOD settings to do that.

But just being able to select between portrait and landscape should come in handy for many users and in specific instances, like when you’re in bed with the phone lying next to you or the phone is being charged on a wireless charger in the horizontal position. So how do you change the screen orientation for Always On Display? It’s easy as pie (no pun intended) if you follow the steps laid out below.

How to change Always On Display screen orientation on the Galaxy S10

Step 1: Open the phone’s Settings app from the app drawer. Alternatively, swipe down from the top of the screen to access the notification shade and tap the gear icon on the top left to enter the phone’s settings.

Step 2: Here, tap Lock screen, then tap Always On Display to go into AOD settings.

Step 3: Scroll down a bit to find the Screen orientation option. Tap on it and then select Portrait or Landscape depending on which orientation you prefer.

That’s it. The next time you need to change orientation for AOD, just follow the steps above to do so. Android Go-powered Galaxy A2 Core user manual surfaces

Samsung has been working on another Android Go smartphone which will most likely be out in the not too distant future. The Galaxy A2 Core has already been revealed in a leaked press render. The user manual for this device has now become available.

This will be the first Android Go smartphone in Samsung’s Galaxy A series. Samsung has already listed the device in the support section of its website. Earlier reports had suggested that it may be out before the end of this month.

Galaxy A2 Core user manual now available

The Galaxy J2 Core was Samsung’s first Android Go smartphone and it came out last year. It was designed to offer a lightweight Android experience with entry-level specs which include just 1GB of RAM. While some manufacturers might opt for the stock UI for their Android Go devices, Samsung did slap its custom interface on the Galaxy J2 Core. It will do that for the Galaxy A2 Core as well.

As we noted in our Galaxy J2 Core hands-on, the phone felt optimized for the specs that it has, while Android Go feels smooth. The Go versions of popular apps like YouTube and Assistant are well optimized for the entry-level device as well. You can thus expect a similar experience with the Galaxy A2 Core.

The user manual for the Galaxy A2 Core bearing model number SM-A260F is now available for download in English. It highlights the device layout and sheds light on the various features that it offers. What it doesn’t say is when the device will be released. The Galaxy J2 Core was priced at around $90 and that’s likely what this handset may cost as well.

Someone got the Galaxy Fold early and they’ve shared a ton of details

Samsung fans still have a lot of questions about the Galaxy Fold. The company has carefully controlled the information flow for its first foldable smartphone. Despite unveiling the handset on February 20, it has not allowed members of the press to go hands-on with the device so far. That was also the case at MWC 2019 where the Galaxy Fold was proudly showcased in a glass boss but kept out of our hands.

With the Galaxy Fold launch just around the corner, some information is inevitably making its way to the public. Like that first Galaxy Fold video which seemingly surfaced from Vietnam and gave us a glimpse of the handset’s display crease. Now, a person who got the Galaxy Fold early has revealed some tidbits about the Galaxy Fold.

New Galaxy Fold details shed more light on the device

It’s reiterated that the device doesn’t actually fold completely flat. It’s more like a binder in that it leaves a tiny gap between the two display sides when closed. The open/close delay has apparently not been addressed so far. That’s the lag experienced when shifting apps from the external to the internal display. The example given says Chrome won’t re-render pages to fullscreen when switching sometimes. The webpage would first be rendered in the small area before its re-rendered to fullscreen after a few seconds.

As regards the display crease, it’s said to be noticeable but not too bad. It can be felt under the finger but becomes hard to notice when the screen is turned on and the brightness is over 70 percent. While the internal display can remain open at a right angle, the screen would be off. So it will not be possible to use the device in that state.

The external display is fully capable of doing everything that you would expect an Android smartphone to do. It can run games, though it would hardly make sense to play them on it. What’s more useful is having separate home screen setups for both displays which is allowed. Additional details include support for MST-based Samsung Pay, custom wallpapers and a separate 4G LTE variant as we exclusively revealed.

The person says that the general performance is comparable to the Exynos-powered Galaxy S10+. It merits mentioning here that the Galaxy Fold will use the Snapdragon 855 and not an Exynos chip as Samsung has already confirmed it has a 7nm processor. The production model of the Galaxy Fold runs One UI 1.2.

There’s a lot of interest in the storage speeds of this device given that the Galaxy Fold is Samsung’s first smartphone with UFS 3.0 storage. An AndroBench test result has revealed sequential read and write speeds of 1512MB/s and 418MB/s. That’s quite an improvement over the 950MB/s and 306MB/s speeds possible on the 12GB Galaxy S10+.

It won’t be long now before we can get our hands on the Galaxy Fold. Samsung will release the device on April 26 in the United States. The company will also start taking pre-orders for the device in Europe on that day, releasing it in 15 markets on May 3 for 2,000 euro.

8nm Exynos 9710 specs surface for the very first time

Samsung is due to launch a successor to its Exynos 9610 chip and it may launch the Exynos 9710 in the not too distant future. The Exynos 9710 specs have surfaced online from China, courtesy of a leaker who has often proven to be reliable. It will take the baton from the 10nm Exynos 7 Series 9610 which has powered premium mid-range devices like the new Galaxy A50.

This is the first that we’re hearing of the Exynos 9710’s technical specs. Samsung has said nothing about it so far. It’s unclear when the company may be planning to announce this new chip.

Samsung Exynos 9710 specs

According to Ice Universe, this new chip will be based on the 8nm process. The generational improvement will thus bring about performance and power efficiency gains. As far as the Exynos 9710 specs are concerned, they are said to include four Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.1GHz and four Cortex-A55 cores at 1.7GHz. They will be mated to a 650MHz Mali-G76 MP8 GPU.

Its predecessor, the Exynos 9610, is based on Samsung’s 10-nanometer FinFET process. It has four Cortex-A73 cores at 2.3GHz and four 1.6GHz Cortex-A53 cores. There’s also an ARM Mali-G72 GPU and an embedded Cortex-M4F-based low-power sensor hub for Always-on solutions. It manages the sensors in real-time without waking up the main processor to deliver additional power efficiency.

As we noted in our Galaxy A50 review, the Exynos 9610 is Samsung’s most powerful Exynos chip for mid-range devices. We found that it’s more than capable of running heavy games like Batman: The Enemy Within which always struggled to run properly on non-flagship Samsung phones. Samsung also focused on providing enhanced multimedia features by enabling slow motion video recording at 480fps in full HD resolution.

The Exynos 9710 thus has a good base to build up on and one can expect the generational improvements to deliver noticeable performance gains. It remains to be seen when this chip will make its way into handsets. Samsung is yet to officially announce it. The company announced the Exynos 9610 on March 22 last year. That date has already passed but it’s possible that an official announcement may be made in the near future.
