SamMobile Daily Recap: March 17, 2017 — Galaxy S8, Galaxy Tab S3 and more!

We publish a lot of stories on a daily basis. Unfortunately, most of the news breaks during our European hours of operation, which makes it difficult for our readers in the US (and other regions) to follow every post that goes live. But, we think we’ve come up with an ideal solution — a daily recap.

In the list below, you’ll find the stories we’ve published today. Chances are, you’re not going to be interested in all of them. To help you find what’s important to you, we’ve split them into their respective categories — so if you want to see the latest Galaxy S8 news, locate the Phones subheading.

Samsung Developer Conference 2017 dates confirmed

Samsung conducts its very own developers conference every year to talk about some of the advancements that it has made in software. The company also conducts various workshops for developers to get them up to speed on how to best leverage its software. The company has now confirmed the Samsung Developer Conference 2017 dates.

It has set up a new website which confirms that the Samsung Developer Conference 2017 is going to take place from October 18 to 19 later this year. It doesn’t reveal much about what the company is planning to talk about during its keynote and what sessions it will be offering to developers. We’ll probably get that information later in the year.

Samsung is currently asking developers who are interested in attending to subscribe to the mailing list so that they can remain updated with any news and updates about the conference.

Galaxy Note 5 Android 7.0 Nougat update rolling out in Turkey

Samsung Turkey published a detailed roadmap for the Nougat update release in the country last month. The roadmap mentioned when this much-awaited update will be released for the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge. It also revealed that we should expect the Galaxy Note 5 to receive Nougat by mid-March.

We’re now receiving reports that the Galaxy Note 5 Android 7.0 Nougat update is being rolled out in Turkey today. Samsung is rolling out firmware version N920CXXU3CQC7 in the country. The update weighs just under 1.3GB which makes sense considering its a major update.

It may take a while for the update to go live across all regions of the country but at least Galaxy Note 5 owners in Turkey can rest assured that they will soon be running the latest and greatest iteration of Android. The firmware file is also available from our firmware section.

This goes to show that Samsung will soon start rolling out the Galaxy Note 5 Android 7.0 Nougat updates in other markets as well in the near future. We should expect the update to go live in additional markets across the globe in the coming weeks.

Samsung U Flex wireless headset for the Galaxy S8 gets Bluetooth certification

We’ve been hearing for the past few months that Samsung is going to ship a pair of wireless earphones with the Galaxy S8. Last week we found that Samsung has filed for a trademark for the brand “U Flex” and the description revealed that this brand was meant to be used with Bluetooth earphones. The Galaxy S8 is already expected to be the first smartphone on the market with Bluetooth 5.0 support.

The U Flex has now received its certification from the Bluetooth SIG. The certificate reveals that this is going to be the set of wireless earphones that Samsung ships with the Galaxy S8. It has been assigned model number EO-BG950 which strongly suggests that it’s meant for the Galaxy S8 given that the upcoming flagship bears model number SM-G950.

While it was initially expected that the headset would be added to Samsung’s Level series of audio products as well, the certificate doesn’t feature that branding so it remains unclear right now if the U Flex will be offered as a standalone Level series product as well.

You can now go on a virtual spaceflight experience with astronaut Tim Peake

British astronaut Tim Peake is going to guide you through a high-speed journey back to the Earth as an immersive virtual reality experience at the Science Museum in London. The VR experience has been created by Alchemy VR for the Science Museum Group.

Titled Space Descent VR, it’s going to put viewers inside the descent module of a Russian Soyuz spacecraft with the UK’s first European Space Agency astronaut Tim Peake. Viewers will experience a first-person ride that has only been experienced by a small number of professional astronauts before.

In order to ensure that the VR experience felt as close to the real deal as possible, the team consulted leading experts including Major Peake. To bring it all together, it employed the rendering power of 100 computers for a full month. The completed virtual reality experience is then delivered to the Museum’s visitors using Samsung Gear VR headsets.

“It really is breath-taking – and that comes from someone who has spent an awful lot of time using VR systems while training for my first mission,” said Tim Peake.

Space Descent VR will open at the Science Museum on March 24. More information and tickets are available from the Museum’s website.

Report: Galaxy S8 to use face recognition for mobile payments

Building on the rumor that surfaced last week claiming that the Galaxy S8 will sport a super-fast face recognition feature (capable of unlocking a device in 0.01 seconds), Bloomberg has published a report suggesting that Samsung will also use the technology as a form of authentication for mobile payments.

It’s thought that the Galaxy S8 will use a combination of fingerprint, iris and face detection to verify users when they attempt to access sensitive services, like banking applications and Samsung Pay. In the future, there’s potential for it to make its way to a slew of other services, too.

The company is “already working with banks to help them embrace facial recognition systems in coming months,” reads the report.

For those in need of a refresher, the Galaxy S8 certainly looks like it’s going to be an extremely impressive device, packing a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1440 x 2960 pixels, a Snapdragon 835 octa-core CPU, a 12MP rear-facing camera, an 8MP selfie shooter and a 3,000mAh battery.

Samsung Galaxy S8 stock wallpapers are here

The Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus would be unveiled on March 29, and images of its icons, launcher, and its user interface were leaked recently. The launch event poster of the Galaxy S8 was leaked earlier today. Now, stock wallpapers of the upcoming flagship smartphones are available for download. You can also download stock wallpapers of other devices from our new Wallpaper Archive.

We think that these wallpapers would look great on Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus’ large 5.7-inch and 6.2-inch curved Infinity Displays. What do you think?

This is the official Samsung Galaxy S8 event poster

It will not be long before Samsung officially takes the wraps off the Galaxy S8, at dedicated events in New York and London at the end of this month. Following the tons of leaks in recent days, we’re getting another one that reveals the official Galaxy S8 event poster. As you can see in the image below, the poster shows an outline of the edge-to-edge design of the Galaxy S8, with a large S in the middle to drive home the point that we’re looking at a Galaxy S device.

The poster also confirms that the S8 will be made available sometime in April. Recent information points to an April 28th release date, with the US and South Korea possibly getting it a week early (something that has become the norm for Samsung’s flagships in recent years). Pre-orders in South Korea could begin as early as April 7th, although we will only see confirmed information on availability following the official launch on March 29th.
