Samsung’s already registering names for its 2021 Galaxy A series phones

Samsung has just registered names for Galaxy A series phones that will make up its mid-range lineup in 2021. Samsung is currently working on successors to the 2019 A series phones, such as the Galaxy A51, Galaxy A71, and Galaxy A91, and while the successors to those upcoming devices will not arrive for at least a year, the company clearly knows what it will end up naming those phones.

As discovered by our friends over at GalaxyClubSamsung has applied for trademarks on the names of nine new Galaxy A devices in the European Union: Samsung A12, A22, A32, A42, A52, A62, A72, and A92. Yes, the trademark applications don’t use the word Galaxy, but their descriptions make it pretty clear that these are smartphones we’re looking at. These applications come just a couple of months after Samsung filed for trademarks on the names for the 2020 A series phones, although we probably won’t see any applications for the 2022 Galaxy A series anytime soon.

Right now, Samsung is working on the Galaxy A51, Galaxy A71, and Galaxy A91, all of which are expected to launch next year with Android 10 onboard. The Galaxy A91 is also in development for India with Android 9 Pie, but it seems highly unlikely that Samsung will actually launch the device with an older version of Android in one market. We already know the complete spec sheet of the Galaxy A91, and all we need to find out now is when Samsung plans to announce the handset and the rest of its 2020 brethren before it ultimately moves on to the 2021 lineup.

Samsung will send your selfie and a Galaxy S10 5G into the stratosphere

Samsung Electronics is celebrating its 50th anniversary with an exciting space-themed marketing campaign/contest called SpaceSelfie. The company will launch a Galaxy S10 5G into the Earth’s stratosphere using high-altitude balloons, and Samsung fans will have an opportunity to send a selfie along with it.

One of the reasons why SpaceSelfie is exciting is that contest winners will receive a photo captured in the stratosphere featuring planet Earth as the background. Said Galaxy S10 5G will display selfies on the screen and will serve as the foreground. It’s basically a photo of your photo shown on a Galaxy S10 5G, captured in the Earth’s stratosphere.

Send your selfie, or your cat’s, into the stratosphere with SpaceSelfie

You can check the video below for an official introduction to the idea of SpaceSelfie, but in short, it’s a contest with 65.000 randomly-picked winners. That’s the number of user-sent images Samsung will send into the stratosphere once the winners will be determined. The video suggests the contest is not limited to selfies and that other types of photos are allowed, such as group shots or pet photos.

Also interesting to note is that Samsung has involved football player Zlatan Ibrahimović into this campaign. He’s presently playing for Los Angeles-based soccer team LA Galaxy. The team isn’t owned by Samsung, despite the moniker, but the coincidental names make this partnership seem fitting. The Swedish professional footballer had this video to share on his Instagram page:

Readers who may want to participate in the contest can visit the official SpaceSelfie page and fill out a form. Do check the terms and conditions as there are quite a few and can differ from country to country. The sign-up period will run until October 31, giving fans a couple of weeks to capture the perfect selfie for the occasion.

Samsung will announce the winners on November 1. Until then, why not customize your phone with some space-themed Galaxy Note 10 wallpapers that embrace the ‘punch-hole’ design? In any case, good luck if you decide to participate in SpaceSelfie, and feel free to share your thoughts on the contest in the comment section below.

Samsung’s next Galaxy Fold could switch from polymide to ultra-thin flexible glass

Samsung could fix one of the more prominent Galaxy Fold imperfections next year, as sources cited by ETNews claim that the company will abandon its transparent polyimide solution in favor of flexible ultra-thin glass (UTG).

The source states that Samsung Display is already manufacturing the foldable displays for its next foldable smartphone model, adding that another company called DOWOO INSYS also began manufacturing the first batch of UTG panels for Samsung.

Samsung to have exclusivity over DOWOO INSYS’ UTG solution

The recent report states that DOWOO INSYS and SCHOTT AG are the two best ultra-thin glass manufacturers in the industry, with the former having the upper edge and “the best technical skills when it comes to UTG” according to industry sources.

Interestingly, if the report is correct then DOWOO INSYS has already agreed to become Samsung’s exclusive UTG panel supplier. Our favorite smartphone maker is currently the face of the foldable form factor and Samsung will likely want to maintain its favorable position in this market segment. Securing the best UTG panel manufacturer as an exclusive supplier could give Samsung another advantage over the competition.

UTG might not solve the flexible screen vulnerability issue, yet

One of the main reasons why Samsung might switch to an ultra-thin glass solution for the next Galaxy Fold is to eliminate the crease that forms on the flexible panel along the hinge.

One source believes the UTG material will be employed for Samsung’s next clamshell foldable phone codenamed “Bloom,” but another unnamed industry insider isn’t as hopeful. The problem with ultra-thin flexible glass is that, even though it may be more aesthetically-pleasing, it’s even more fragile than transparent polyimide, whose characteristics already led to polarizing opinions and negative reviews. It’s also costlier to produce while having a lower yield rate on the manufacturing line, and this wouldn’t help Samsung in achieving less luxurious launch prices for its future foldable devices.

Having said that, some industry watchers are reserved and believe it may take “some time” for UTG to become a viable solution for Samsung’s next commercial foldable phone. Nevertheless, UTG seems to be the way of the future for Samsung’s foldable segment, but only time will tell if it will be implemented next year.

Samsung UK & Klarna offer more online Galaxy flagship payment options

Samsung Electronics UK and Swedish online financial service provider Klarna have teamed up to offer more payment methods for products sold through Samsung’s online shops.

The partnership allows prospective buyers to choose between three additional payment methods at check-out on Samsung.com. Customers in the UK can decide to pay for the purchase in 30 days via Pay later, in 3 months via Pay in 3, or across a period of 4 years through the Slice it offer. Pay later is available for purchases of up to £250; Pay in 3 applies to purchases worth £250-£1000, and Slice it covers purchases worth more than £250 (an upper limit hasn’t been mentioned).

Klarna continues to support Samsung’s Upgrade Program

In addition to offering three new payment methods for Samsung products purchased online in the UK, Klarna confirmed it will continue to support Samsung’s flagship Upgrade Program, allowing eligible customers to upgrade to a new Galaxy flagship model in exchange for 24 monthly payments.

Samsung’s Upgrade Program was devised a few years ago to give Galaxy flagship enthusiasts more cost-effective upgrade options every year. Members can return their existing flagship device for a new one at a discounted price. Given how Samsung’s top-tier phones have been in an upward price trajectory over the years – and especially now after the Galaxy Fold surpassed the $2,000 price mark – it wouldn’t be surprising if an increasing number of customers will decide to make use of the Program as time goes by.

Either way, the variety of payment options offered by Samsung’s e-store should gain the attention of more prospective buyers who might now be able to find a payment method that suits their needs. You can check Samsung.com/uk/klarna for more details.

Exclusive: Galaxy S10 Lite coming in these colors

The Galaxy S10 Lite, the lower-priced Galaxy S10 model that was recently revealed to be in development, will come in some familiar paint jobs whenever it goes official. We have learned from our sources that color options for the device, which sports model number SM-G770F, include white, black, and blue.

The Galaxy S10 lineup was launched in Prism Black, Prism White, Prism Blue, and Prism Green colors, and the Galaxy S10e also came in Canary Yellow. Whether green and yellow will be added to the list for the Galaxy S10 Lite later down the line remains to be seen, although we would be more interested in having the Galaxy Note 10’s Aura Glow as one of the options. It’s possible Samsung would want to keep that exclusive to its flagship phones, but we hope not because Aura Glow is downright amazing and the company’s best work yet as far as smartphone colors are concerned.

The Galaxy S10 Lite (a tentative name) is expected to be the same device as the Galaxy A91 as far as the hardware is concerned. It should have a 6.7-inch Full HD+ display, Snapdragon 855 processor, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of expandable storage, and a 4,500 mAh battery with 45W super fast charging. The rear camera setup might include a 48MP primary camera and a 12MP ultra-wide and 5MP depth sensor, while the front camera should be a 32MP sensor, same as existing A series phones like the Galaxy A70/A70s and Galaxy M30s.

As we had exclusively revealed, a Galaxy Note 10 Lite is in the works as well. Fewer details are available about that device – we know it will have silver, black, and red color options, but there is no word on its specs. More should be revealed as time goes by, and we’ll be keeping a close eye on both of Samsung’s upcoming ‘Lite’ smartphones and bringing you all the information we can find about them as soon as possible.

Galaxy Fold 2 codenamed ‘Bloom’, Android 10 and some colors confirmed

The Galaxy Fold 2, or whatever the next foldable Galaxy device will be called, is codenamed Bloom, according to a report published by Korea’s The Bell. We can confirm that that is indeed the codename for the device, and we have also learned that software development on the Fold 2 has just started. It’s based on Android 10, as you would expect, although we may see multiple new phones hit retail stores with Android 10 ahead of the Galaxy Fold 2, including the Galaxy S11 and a couple of A series phones.

Samsung torn between 6.7-inch and 8.1-inch display sizes?

According to the report, Samsung is aiming to release the Galaxy Fold 2 sometime in April but may launch it alongside the Galaxy S11, just like it unveiled the Galaxy Fold at the Galaxy S10 event. As for the codename, it’s unclear what it is supposed to represent. The Bell believes it could represent the fact that adding a second foldable device to its lineup would help Samsung increase its market share in the foldables category.

However, a more interesting point in the report is that Samsung is undecided about how big it wants the Fold 2’s foldable display to be. Earlier reports had said that the next Fold would have a 6.7-inch screen, but the company is apparently thinking of taking that up to 8.1 inches. An 8-inch+ screen would make a clamshell design — which is what the Fold 2 is rumored to have — less likely, but, on the flip side, that would mean the outer display could be bigger than it is on the Galaxy Fold.

Galaxy Fold 2 coming in white, purple, and black

While we can’t comment on what design the Galaxy Fold 2 will ultimately have, we can confirm some colors for the device. We’re told the current color choices include white, black, and purple. Samsung will no doubt have at least a fourth color on offer, but even if it doesn’t, the Fold 2 would have an extra color choice over its predecessor. That’s because while the Galaxy Fold was announced in four different colors, Samsung is only selling it in Cosmos Black and Cosmos Silver and hasn’t made the Martian Green and Astro Blue options available.

Some Samsung fans in India can now test Galaxy S10 Android 10 beta

India is set to be one of the markets where the Galaxy S10 One UI 2.0 beta program will be made available, but before taking the program live for everyone, Samsung is letting some of its fans test the new software out. These fans are part of Samsung’s Brand Ambassador program, which the company says is for “those select few who will work with our team closely, help us monitor content on the forums, assist with offline events, lead city charters and much more.”

Clearly, access to beta software before everyone else is also part of the deal, and the first Android 10 beta that was released in Germany this week is now being released to some fans, as confirmed to us by Twitter user Abhinav Mudaliar. It’s currently unclear when the beta program will go live for the general public, but that will possibly happen on the same day the Galaxy Note 10 Android 10 beta program is launched, which is slated for October 21 according to Samsung’s customer representatives.

Until you can get access to the beta, check out some of the new features that One UI 2.0 and Android 10 bring to the Galaxy S10 series in the video below and in this article. Do let us know if you’re part of Samsung’s Brand Ambassador program and whether you’re getting the Android 10 beta as well!

What is the newest Samsung phone? – October 2019

It has often been difficult to keep track of the newest Samsung phone given that the company releases so many throughout the year. Samsung has dozens of models across different series which cater to all price ranges. This page will be updated on a monthly basis to ensure that you can always know what is the newest Samsung phone in each series.

The latest Galaxy Phone in every series

Galaxy Fold

The Galaxy Fold is currently the only device in Samsung’s foldable smartphone series. It went on sale in September 2019 and has been quickly selling out in the markets where it has been available.

Samsung’s first foldable smartphone features a 4.6-inch cover display and a 7.3-inch foldable display. There’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor under the hood with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. It has a grand total of six cameras. This includes a 10MP on the cover display, a dual 10MP and 8MP camera on the foldable display and a triple 16MP ultra wide, 12MP wide angle and 12MP telephoto camera. Get the full Galaxy Fold specs on our dedicated device page.

The Galaxy Fold costs $1,980 and is available in limited quantities across the globe. You can read our review of the Galaxy Fold to find out if this device is worth purchasing.

Galaxy Note

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ in August 2019. The company released multiple models this time around, something which it hasn’t normally done for this series. These devices will remain the only entrants in the Galaxy Note series until next year when their successor becomes due, unless that Galaxy Note 10 Lite ends up being released.

There are many similarities and a few differences between the two models. The Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ feature a 6.3-inch and 6.8-inch Infinity-O display, 8GB and 12GB RAM, 3,500mAh and 4,300mAh battery respectively. The Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ support 25W and 45W fast charging as well. Both have the same Exynos 9825/Snapdragon 855 setup and the same camera setup with the exception of the 3D ToF sensor on the Note 10+. The camera setup includes a 12MP primary sensor with a 12MP telephoto and a 16MP super wide-angle lens. There’s a 10MP camera on the front. Visit our devices page for the full Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ specs.

The Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ are widely available across the globe. Prices start at $949 and $1099 respectively. There’s also a Galaxy Note 10+ 5G available in select markets. It doesn’t differ in terms of specs. Check out our Galaxy Note 10 review as well as our Galaxy Note 10+ review for a more in-depth analysis of both devices.

Galaxy S

Samsung did something with the Galaxy S series this year that it has never done before. It launched three models of the flagship in addition to a separate 5G variant that was made available only in select markets.

Our detailed Galaxy S10e vs Galaxy S10 vs Galaxy S10+ specs comparison breaks out all of the differences between these three devices. There are noticeable differences in key specs, including but not limited to the display size, memory and storage, battery size and camera setup.

The Galaxy S10 5G remains limited to select markets. It features a bigger 6.7-inch display and 4,500mAh battery with support for 25W fast charging. There’s also a dual front camera with a ToF sensor. These are the key differences which set this device apart from the entire lineup, other than the obvious, which is support for 5G networks.

Our Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ reviews are a great read if you wish to find out more about these devices. Prices start at $749 for the Galaxy S10e, $899 for the Galaxy S10, and $999 for the Galaxy S10+.

Galaxy A

Galaxy A70 hands-on preview

Samsung has significantly expanded its Galaxy A series in 2019. It now offers over a dozen smartphones across all price ranges. You can get a entry level device like the Galaxy A10 and a 5G-capable device like the Galaxy A90 5G.

The Galaxy A70s is currently the latest Galaxy phone in this series. It’s a minor upgrade over the Galaxy A70 which was released earlier this year. It has the same 6.7-inch Infinity-U display with an in-display fingerprint sensor and a Snapdragon 675 chipset under the hood. The main upgrade here is the 64MP camera on the back with an 8MP ultra-wide and a 5MP depth sensor. The dedicated Galaxy A70s device page has the full specs.

Samsung first made the Galaxy A70s available in India for the equivalent of $412. We already have a hands-on preview of the Galaxy A70s which details our first impressions of this premium mid-range device.

Galaxy M

Samsung introduced its Galaxy M lineup earlier this year. It’s a new budget lineup aimed primarily at India with features that were previously never seen on devices in this price range from Samsung. The series is also unique in that Samsung only sells the Galaxy M devices online.

Launched in September 2019, the Galaxy M30s is currently the newest Samsung phone in this series. It’s an upgraded version of the Galaxy M30 launched earlier this year. The device features a 6.4-inch FHD+ display with a newer Exynos 9611 processor coupled with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It also features a 48MP primary camera with an 8MP ultra-wide and 5MP depth sensor. Our Galaxy M30s device page has the full specs.

Priced at the equivalent of $200, the Galaxy M30s is now available for purchase in India. Those who are interested in picking one up can read our Galaxy M30s review to find out more about this latest budget device from Samsung.

Bear in mind that this list only tells you about the newest Samsung phone in every series, not what’s the best in a given price range. It’s to show you what the latest phone is so that you know what to look out for when buying a new Samsung smartphone.

Samsung quietly lists the Galaxy Tab A Kids Edition (2019) on its website

Samsung has quietly listed the Galaxy Tab A Kids Edition (2019) on its US website. As the name suggests, this is a tablet aimed at kids, but the device itself is not exactly new. It’s basically a Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2019) with a bumper case. The rest of the things, including the SM-T290 model number, remain unchanged from the regular tab.

Being a tablet for kids, it offers granular controls for parents to monitor screen time and access to content. The tab comes with a free trial of the Samsung Kids app that boasts 10,000+ hours of kid-friendly content. The app can be downloaded from Google Play Store on other Galaxy tablets as well, so the only real distinction between the Kids Edition and the regular Tab A is the addition of the bumper case to the former for extra protection from bumps and drops.

As far as the specs are concerned, it comes with an 8-inch 1280 x 800 TFT display with 1280 x 800 resolution, Snapdragon 429 chipset, 2GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, MicroSD slot, 8 MP rear camera, 2 MP front camera, and a 5,100mAh battery. It runs Android Pie with Samsung’s One UI on top.

The Galaxy Tab A Kids Edition (2019) is priced at $149.99 for the Wi-Fi only variant with no trace of any LTE option. The bumper case comes in four different color options, but the tablet itself is available only in silver. The device is already available for purchase on Samsung’s online store in the US.

Samsung has made more than 100 firmware for the Galaxy Home

The Galaxy Home is coming to market at some point, that’s for certain, even if Samsung may have announced it more than a year ago. Recent signs have indicated that the Galaxy Home’s launch is getting closer and closer, and we have discovered that Samsung has been working hard towards that goal and has made 110+ firmware for the Galaxy Home (SM-V510) and 130+ firmware for the Galaxy Home Mini (SM-V310)! That’s a lot more than what you would see for the company’s flagship phones, the test firmware count for which is usually less than half of the figures for the two Galaxy Homes.

Of course, it’s not exactly a one-to-one comparison. Smartphones are a whole different product category than smart speakers. The latter aren’t supposed to do everything a smartphone can, and that means they usually have smaller firmware sizes. Firmware files for Galaxy phones can be upwards of 5GB in size, so Samsung no doubt makes sure to have as many improvements and changes included in every new test firmware. Flashing firmware takes time, after all, but for a smart speaker, both the firmware sizes and time required to install them would be lower, and that might partially explain why Samsung has been less concerned with the number of test firmware for its upcoming smart speaker.

What’s interesting is that Samsung seems to be testing the Galaxy Home Mini as seriously as the regular Galaxy Home. Could the Galaxy Home Mini be officially announced at Samsung’s developer conference at the end of the month, alongside details of when the Galaxy Home will be available for purchase? It’s possible, and it would certainly be a good ide for Samsung to make up for the delay between the Home’s unveiling and its retail availability by introducing its more affordable cousin at the same time.

[Updated] Exclusive: Affordable Galaxy Note headed to Europe in black and red

An affordable Galaxy Note smartphone that isn’t a flagship is an idea that doesn’t sit well with everyone. Some Galaxy Note fans feel that more than just a single Note flagship that has it all only serves to dilute the brand. But, as smartphone prices continue to rise, Samsung made the decision to launch two Galaxy Note models this year.

The regular Galaxy Note 10 is aimed at newcomers who want to check out the S Pen experience, but at $950, it’s not an affordable device by any stretch of the imagination. However, we learned recently that an affordable, possibly mid-range Galaxy Note smartphone could be on the cards. Now, we have discovered that this device is headed to the European continent in two color options: black and red. We wish we could reveal more, but that’s the only information we have been given at this time.

What is this affordable Galaxy Note you speak of?

As we had revealed earlier, this mysterious new Galaxy Note smartphone has the model number SM-N770F, and with Note flagships sporting model numbers in the SM-N9xxx range, one can only surmise that the SM-N770F is a cheaper Note smartphone. Samsung has released a mid-range Note smartphone once before: That was the Galaxy Note 3 Neo, which featured model number SM-N750F and was based off the Galaxy Note 3’s design.

And the SM-N770F might just be a spiritual successor to the Galaxy Note 3 Neo. Perhaps a Galaxy Note 10 Neo or Galaxy Note 10 Lite that Samsung hopes will capture audiences that aren’t willing to pay the price that a flagship Galaxy Note commands? It’s possible, and it will be very interesting to see which direction Samsung is taking its Note series to if the SM-N770F is indeed part of the Galaxy Note family.

Does the idea of a mid-range Galaxy Note phone that doesn’t burn a hole in your pocket appeal to you?

Update: Samsung now has a silver version of the phone in the works as well. Whether more colors will join the list in the future remains to be seen, but it sure looks like the company isn’t going to limit consumers as far as color choices are concerned for the lower-priced Note.

Add screenshot button to navigation bar with Good Lock on your Galaxy device

Take screenshots often and long for a way to make the process more convenient so you don’t have to reach for the volume and power buttons all the time? Samsung has a nice little solution tucked away for that in Good Lock, the app that lets you modify various elements of the user interface through a multitude of different plugins on Galaxy devices (running Android Oreo and above). One of those plugins, called NavStar, lets you customize the navigation bar and add a fourth button next to the home, back, and multitasking buttons.

And, as you may have already guessed, that includes the option to add a screenshot button next to the navigation keys, so you can take screenshots when you want with just a single tap. Regular Good Lock users will probably be aware of all these features, but for those who don’t, we’ve put together a short guide to show how they can add a screenshot button in the navigation bar on their Galaxy device.

How to use Good Lock to add screenshot button to navigation bar

You will need Good Lock installed for this and can download it from the Galaxy Store. It’s worth mentioning that Good Lock is not officially available in every country. There is a way to install Good Lock and its plugins — including NavStar — manually, and you can check out this guide to find out how you can do that if Good Lock isn’t available on the Galaxy Store in your country. Once you’ve done that, come back here and follow the steps below.

Step 1: Open Good Lock on your device, then tap NavStar (if you’re doing this for the first time, you will be asked to install NavStar from the Galaxy Store). If you had to manually install Good Lock as mentioned in the previous paragraph, tap the NavStar shortcut on the home screen to launch it.

Step 2: Now, turn the toggle at the top of the screen to ON, then tap the New configuration button.

Step 3: Tap Button layout at the bottom of the screen. Then, tap Add button.

Step 4: You will then be shown all the actions you can associate to the new button. Select Screen capture here.

Step 5: You will then be showed a preview at the top of the screenshot button sitting next to the standard navigation buttons. You can press and drag the screenshot button to a different position or leave it at the default position (which is to the left of the navigation buttons). Once you’ve decided, just hit the Done button.

You will now have a persistent screenshot button in the navigation bar that you can use to take screenshots all day long (and into the night). If you decide you want to go back to the original three-button layout, just open NavStar again and turn it off using the ON/OFF toggle at the top. Uninstalling NavStar from your phone will also have the same effect.
