Exclusive: One UI 2.0 features will include Emoji suggestions

Samsung will make major software-related announcements at its developers’ conference next month. That’s when we’ll get a good look at One UI 2.0, the next major iteration of its custom skin. The company will likely also detail its plans for Android 10 at the event.

As you can probably expect, there will be quite a few new features included in One UI 2.0. We hear that one of those features will be Emoji suggestions and predictions. It will be a fun little addition to the Samsung Keyboard. It will surface these suggestions as you’re typing along.

Emoji suggestions will be part of One UI 2.0

This won’t really be a groundbreaking feature. There are countless messaging apps that will show Emoji suggestions and predictions as you type. KakoTalk, a Korean messaging app that’s quite popular across Asia, is one such example. Line is another.

Similar functionality has long been offered by third-party keyboards as well. Offering this feature with the native keyboard will ensure that users have fewer reasons to switch away from Samsung Keyboard.

We recently got our first look at Android 10 and One UI 2.0 on a Galaxy S10. The video showed a glimpse of the new gesture system that Android 10 brings to the table. Google has made it mandatory for OEMs to bring these stock navigation gestures to their devices.

The One UI design itself doesn’t appear to have changed much but since this was likely a very early development build, chances are that things may have changed along the way. We’ll find out for sure next month when Samsung unveils One UI 2.0 at SDC 2019. We’ll be on the ground in San Francisco to bring you the latest updates from the event.

Video Assistant returns in butchered form in latest Samsung Internet beta

The latest Samsung Internet beta has brought back Video Assistant, one of the browser’s popular features that went missing a couple of months ago. Unfortunately, Video Assistant has returned without what was no doubt its most useful aspect: playing videos from a website in a pop-up window while you browse other sites or use another app on your phone or tablet.

Pop-up video play now works only on websites that allow it

The option to play videos in a pop-up window does still exist, but now, it will only work if a website or content provider allows it. And that means you can’t use the functionality on the YouTube website, which is a shame as Video Assistant originally allowed users to get around the YouTube app’s limitation of not playing videos when the app is minimized. It does make sense, however, as content providers need to be able to protect their content in a day and age where multiple streaming services and providers vie for the customer’s attention.

If you use Samsung Internet, you’ll simply have to try out the new beta and check which of your favorite websites allow you to run videos in a pop-up window. The other two Video Assistant options — casting videos to a television through the Smart View feature and viewing them full-screen on the mobile screen with enhanced controls — continue to work on every website, and, as before, you can disable Video Assistant completely from the Useful features section of the browser’s settings.

Newest beta also lets you relocate toolbar buttons

The newest Samsung Internet beta release also brings the ability to relocate the buttons on the bottom toolbar and those in the ‘more’ menu. The toolbar customization menu can be found in the Appearance » Customize toolbar section of the browser settings and is very handy – now, you can move that back button to the right side of the toolbar for easier reach or even remove it if that’s what you desire. Samsung has also updated the list view for the tab manager: You now get a thumbnail showing the contents of a website instead of just the site’s name.

You can download the latest Samsung Internet beta — version 10.2.00.19 — from Google Play; the latest release isn’t yet available on the Galaxy Store, but that should change in the next couple of days. As always, you can also grab the app by downloading its APK file from our APK archive and sideloading it on your phone or tablet.

Galaxy M30s will also reportedly launch in Europe after India

Samsung is reportedly going to bring the Galaxy M30s to a handful of European countries, including Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and the UK. The device will be identified by the model number SM-M307FN and should have the same hardware characteristics as the Galaxy M30s headed for India.

It’s unclear when the Galaxy M30s will hit the European market, but according to Amazon’s teaser page, the device will debut in India on September 18. In theory, the phone’s availability should continue to extend to other markets within the first few weeks following its debut.

Galaxy M30s likely headed to Europe

The Galaxy M30s is one of Samsung’s many mid-range smartphones introduced this year. It’s a spinoff based on the Galaxy M30, sharing the same display characteristics and dimensions. Pricing details are unknown, but the M30 launched for around Rs. 15,000 ($210) in May and the Galaxy M30s should technically fit in the same price range.

The upcoming model is expected to feature a new Exynos 9611 chipset which is likely a renamed Exynos 9610 SoC with a slightly higher clock rate. The device should also carry three upgraded rear-facing cameras, but perhaps one of the most impressive characteristics is the generous 6,000mAh battery, which represents a record-high capacity for Samsung.

T-Mobile Galaxy S8 Active gets Android Pie in the latest update

Google may have officially released Android 10, but there are still many devices that are waiting for the year-old Android Pie update. The T-Mobile Galaxy S8 Active was one of them until yesterday. Thankfully, the long wait has finally come to an end as the rugged version of the 2017 flagship has started receiving the Android Pie update on the United States’ third-largest carrier.

The T-Mobile variant is getting the update two weeks after the Sprint version and nearly two months after the AT&T model received the same update. The delay looks even worse when you consider the fact that the Android Pie rollout for the Galaxy S8 duo started back in February itself. The Galaxy S8 Active is merely a rugged version of the regular S8 with nearly identical specs, but customers had to wait much longer for the update.

The T-Mobile update, which weighs 1687 MB and carries the version number G892USQU5CSG7, brings Android Pie and One UI 1.1 to the device. It also includes the July security patch, even as Samsung starts rolling out the September security patch to its other devices. This is the second and most probably the last Android version update for the Galaxy S8 Active. You can read our One UI Feature Focus series to learn about all the new features the latest release brings to the table.

T-Mobile customers who haven’t received the update notification yet can manually check for it by tapping the Download updates manually option under Software Update in the Settings app. If that doesn’t work and you are impatient to wait any longer, you can consider downloading the latest Galaxy S8 Active firmware from our database and manually flashing it.

US unlocked Galaxy A50 pre-orders live on Amazon with free Galaxy Fit

The Galaxy A50 was launched earlier this year and it was revealed a few months ago that it would be making its way to the United States. Carriers like Sprint started selling the device three months ago. It was later reported that an official unlocked variant will soon be available in the country as well.

While you won’t find one on Samsung’s website, the official US unlock Galaxy A50 is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Those who pre-order will receive a free Galaxy Fit ($100 value) activity tracker. Best Buy has been selling the same variant for some time now.

Amazon now taking pre-orders for US unlocked Galaxy A50

We mentioned in our Galaxy A50 review that this is Samsung’s most value-for-money mid-range device yet. It offers quite a lot in return for its $349.99 price tag and was the first mid-range phone from Samsung with an optical fingerprint sensor under the display.

Its top features include the 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display, Exynos 9610 chipset with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The triple rear camera features a 25-megapixel primary sensor with an 8-megapixel ultra-wide and 5-megapixel depth sensor. There’s also a 4,000mAh battery with 15W fast charging.

This particular variant has support for both GSM and CDMA networks so it will be able to work with all major carriers in the United States. It also comes with a 12-month Samsung US warranty which you won’t get from the international unlocked variants that third-party sellers are hawking on Amazon. So be mindful of that when you do decide to purchase one. If you do so now, you’ll get a free Galaxy Fit activity tracker as well when Amazon starts shipping the handset on September 20. We found it to be a well-rounded fitness band in our Galaxy Fit review.

Amazon is selling the US unlocked Galaxy A50 for $349.99 with free delivery included for Prime members.
