Samsung paves the way for smartphones with 6GB RAM

If you believe that 4GB RAM for smartphones is overdoing it a bit, think again. Samsung has paved the way for 6GB RAMs to debut in smartphones in the near future. The company today announced that its mass producing the first 12-gigabit (Gb) LPDDR4 (low power, double data rate 4)mobile DRAM based on its 20-nm process technology. Samsung says that the newest LPDDR4 is likely to significantly improve adoption of high capacity mobile DRAM across the globe, it brings the largest capacity and highest speed available for a DRAM chip with improved energy efficiency, reliability and ease of design for manufacturers.

According to Samsung the 12Gb LPDDR4 is over 30% faster at 4,266 Mbps than the preceding 20nm-based 8Gb LPDDR4 and also twice as fast as DDR4 DRAM for PCs while reducing energy consumption by 20%. Moreover the manufacturing productivity of the new LPDDr4 has been raised by 50% over the preceding chip. Samsung’s 12Gb LPDDR4 enables 3GB or 6GB of mobile DRAM in a single package using two and four chips respectively, it also happens to be the only solution capable of providing a 6GB LPDDR4 package. The company says that in the next generation of mobile devices 6GB of RAM will enable users to enjoy seamless multitasking and maximum performance, and since the new chip can easily fit in the same space used for 3GB packages, manufacturers won’t have to make major design changes to accommodate the new chip. This appears to be a clear hint that the Galaxy S7 could tout 6GB of RAM, Samsung also expects to serve other platforms with its new LPDDR4 memory such as digital appliances, automotive devices as well as ultra-slim PCs in the future.

How’s the battery life on your Galaxy S6 edge+ or Galaxy Note 5?

Undependable battery life was probably the only major issue with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, and despite Samsung’s promise of better power management because of the efficient Exynos CPU and fast and wireless charging support, neither of the two devices scored high on endurance on a single charge. The Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ launched last month with pretty much the same hardware as the S6 and S6 edge, but with larger batteries under the hood.

But then again, 3,000 mAh batteries don’t exactly inspire on phablets with 5.7-inch displays; the Galaxy Note 5 has a considerably smaller battery than the Note 4, but more efficient hardware and software optimization allow it to offer more or less the same endurance. We’ve been using both devices for about a month now (our reviews will be out very soon), and we can confirm that battery life is better than what we were expecting. It’s not impressive, but that constant worry of finding a charging point that we had using the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge has been reduced by a fair margin.

We’re sure many of you have bought either the Galaxy S6 edge+ or Galaxy Note 5 in recent days, and we would love to know what kind of battery life you have been getting. For some it’s probably too early to ask as their devices might not have settled down enough to be giving the highest possible battery life, but even the early days are a good indication of how good a smartphone can be when it comes to chugging along without needing a charge. So, do let us know about your experience through the poll, and also through the comments section!

Huawei’s next major device might feature a dual-edge display provided by Samsung

Huawei is a successful manufacturer that already has a strong position in China which also happens to be its home base, the company has been working to expand the reach of its mobile devices to other parts of the world. In order to effectively compete against major flagship smartphones in markets across Europe and North America the company needs to create devices that can hold their own against these rivals and if a new rumor is to be believed it just might be working on one such device.

Rumor has it that Huawei is going to release a 2K smartphone next year, it will have a dual-edge Quad HD resolution Super AMOLED display from Samsung, and the panel itself might be supplied by Samsung. It’s unclear though what the actual size of this panel might be, apparently Huawei intends on manufacturing three million units of this handset per month which means that it might be Huawei’s biggest handset for 2016. Samsung isn’t against supplying competitors with components that it uses in its own devices, before the dual-edge Quad HD display is slapped on a Huawei device it’s much more likely that we’ll see BlackBerry’s latest handset tout the very same panel. So it’s quite possible that a Galaxy S6 edge-like device might be on the cards from Huawei in 2016.

Samsung to reduce workforce by 10 percent at its headquarters

According to a Korean newspaper Samsung is gearing up to reduce the workforce at its headquarters by 10 percent as it feels the pinch from Apple in the high-end market segment and from Chinese vendors in the mid-range and low-end segment. The report claims that Samsung will be targeting the layoffs in human resources, finance and public relations departments, the company is also reportedly going to cut additional expenses in the coming year. As of June 30th the company had some 98,999 employees at its headquarters so a 10% reduction would leave quite a few people out of a job.

Samsung is likely making these cost cutting moves following the rapid decline in its market value, it has lost some $40 billion in market value since April this year, given that the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge didn’t exactly do much to turn the company’s fortunes around. Samsung’s share of global smartphone shipments is also down by 3 percentage points in the second quarter and it has been dethroned as the top vendor in China, which happens to be the biggest mobile-phone market in the world. It’s certainly a challenging time for the Korean company.

Samsung’s free-form battery was instrumental in creation of the Gear S2

Samsung’s new smartwatch has caught the wearable industry’s attention, the Gear S2 is receiving favorable opinions from many critics and it’s likely that customers might respond in kind when the device arrives next month. It was not an easy feat to create this round smartwatch which also features a rotating bezel and touts battery life of up to three days, Samsung SDI’s free-form battery technology was actually instrumental in the creation of this smartwatch.

Before the Gear S2 was formally unveiled it was rumored that the smartwatch would have a 200mAh battery but in reality it comes with a 250mAh battery and this was only possible due to Samsung’s free-form technology which utilizes space much more efficiently thus providing more capacity without taking up as much space. Samsung SDI started developing the free-form battery technology in December last year and finished in April this year, it started mass producing the battery in August and it was showcased for the first time with the Gear S2. If the company had used a rectangular battery it wouldn’t have been able to stretch the capacity beyond 200mAh because of constraints in design space, it was only due to the free-form battery that Samsung was able to offer 250mAh capacity in the Gear S2, thus giving it yet another advantage over other smartwatches in the market.
