Galaxy Note 10 Android 10 beta program open in the US, go get it!

Samsung has opened the Galaxy Note 10 One UI 2.0 beta program in the US. The beta program is available for unlocked Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ units, and interested users can register for the program from the Samsung Members app. Once they have registered, they can download the first beta update over the air from the Software update menu in the phone’s Settings app. The first beta build comes with firmware version N97*U1UEU2ZSK3 and should be around 1.8GB to 2GB in size.

The Galaxy Note 10 beta program is now available in four markets: India, South Korea, Germany, and the United States. Samsung seems to be taking it slow for the Galaxy Note 10 compared to the Galaxy S10 for some reason. Germany was the first market to get the Android 10 beta for the Note 10 and Note 10+, and South Korea followed a few days later. The beta was then launched in India, but Indian users got a newer build (the same one that’s rolling out in the US) that is yet to be released in South Korea or Germany, although it should be coming out sometime next week.

As for the stable Android 10 update, it’s unclear when it will come out for either the Galaxy S10 series or the Galaxy Note 10 series. The only thing we know is that it should be released sometime this year, at least if Samsung intends to keep the promise it has made to Google. And it probably will stick to that promise, considering it has already started developing Android 10 even for budget phones like the Galaxy M20 and Galaxy M30, but nothing is certain at this time.

Are you going to be trying out the Android 10 beta on your Galaxy Note 10 or Note 10+? Let us know in the comments, and if your answer is yes, do check out what features you can expect in the beta and all the UI changes and improvements One UI 2.0 brings to your phone.

Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy A80 get November security update

The latest Android security patch is now available for two more Galaxy devices. The Galaxy Note 8 is receiving the November 2019 security patch update in Panama, while the Galaxy A80 is getting a similar update in Thailand. The software version for the Note 8 and A80 updates is N950FXXS8DSK1 and A805FXXS3ASK3 respectively.

Samsung hasn’t bundled any new features or changes in these updates other than the November security patch. That’s normal for the Galaxy Note 8 as it has been on the market for more than two years and received two Android version updates. The Galaxy A80, on the other hand, was released only a few months ago, but it has also received mostly basic software updates since launch. It will gain new functionality with the Android 10 update, although there’s no ETA on when that update will start rolling out for the Galaxy A80 and other Galaxy devices.

Galaxy Note 8 and A80 owners can download the latest update on their phone via the Software update menu in the Settings app by tapping the Download and install option. The latest firmware can also be found in our firmware database (Galaxy Note 8 | Galaxy A80) and can be used to upgrade the device manually using a Windows PC.

Samsung promotes digital learning among students in India with AESL

Samsung has long focused on catering to the education market with tailor-made solutions. Its latest partnership in India will help promote digital learning among students in the country. It’s for this reason that a new partnership has been reached between Samsung and Aakash Educational Services.

Aakash Educational Services or AESL is one of the largest competitive exam prep firms in the country. It has a network of more than 200 centers spread across 130 cities attended by over 250,000 students.

The partnership will help promote digital learning in India

Students will benefit from having access to academic devices in the form of tablets and mobiles as they prepare for examinations that will be conducted in an online environment. Samsung will make such devices available exclusively for AESL students.

The students would be able to obtain these Samsung devices at special prices. They would be helpful for them in preparing for competitive examinations like JEE Main and JEE Advanced which are computer-based. “We have tied up with Samsung to make its products available easily to students so to enable them to have easy access to online testing,” said Aakash Chaudhry, the CEO of AESL.

Students are set to benefit from this partnership as they will be able to obtain Samsung’s devices at a special price. This tie-up will thus lower the barrier of entry for students who lack the resources to adequately prepare themselves for computed-based competitive examinations. It will certainly go a long way in promoting digital learning in the country.

Leaked Galaxy A51 case renders tell a similar design story

It’s not surprising to see that Samsung is working on a new Galaxy A series handset. The Galaxy A51 will likely be one of the first from its 2020 Galaxy A series. We have seen some leaked renders of the device recently which provided hints about its design.

Some purported Galaxy A51 case renders have now been leaked online. They tell a similar design story following the renders that were leaked earlier this week. One element that immediately stands out is the quad camera setup that’s arranged in a new L shape.

Galaxy A51 will come with some noticeable design changes

This is a relatively new look for a Samsung device and multiple leaked renders now suggested that the company has decided on it for the Galaxy A51. The device also appears to have a centered punch-hole display much like the Galaxy Note 10.

This would actually be the first device after the Galaxy Note 10 to have the punch-hole in that position. Samsung has previously used waterdrop notches for its budget and mid-range handsets, with some exceptions. It’s just another example of its more advanced tech trickling down to affordable devices.

The new quad camera setup will certainly be one of the highlights of this device. It’s expected to feature a 48MP primary camera with a 12MP ultra-wide and a 12MP 2x optical zoom telephoto camera. There will also be a 5MP depth sensing camera.

We can expect to see more Galaxy A51 leaks in the days to come. Samsung hasn’t said when we can expect this device to arrive. Given that the new Galaxy A handsets were made official early this year, it’s quite likely that Samsung will introduce the 2020 Galaxy A series in the next couple of months.

Samsung kicks off anti-cyberbullying campaign around Fortnite Glow skin

Samsung and Cheil Brazil have launched a campaign whereby Fortnite players can donate the Glow skin to other fellow players who don’t have any cosmetic items to show off their characters. The Fortnite Glow skin was launched exclusively for Samsung devices a couple of months ago, but now it can technically be obtained by players who don’t own a Samsung smartphone, as long as someone else is willing to donate it to them.

Fortnite Glow skin becomes part of an anti-bullying campaign

Believe it or not, this is all part of an anti-cyberbullying campaign aiming to combat toxicity in the virtual space. Online multiplayer games are generally very competitive, and in some of the worst cases, this competitive environment can generate a lot of friction or toxicity between the players.

Competitiveness in the online gaming space is par for the course and always has been. Players will always try to outdo each other in different ways. But as video games continued to develop new methods of monetization in recent years, a new problem arose – particularly among younger audiences – whereby players who don’t have any cosmetic items for their virtual avatars are being treated poorly by their fellow players.

In other words, if you can’t afford or simply don’t want to fork real money for an in-game cosmetic item in a game like Fortnite then you risk being called a “Default” in a derogatory way by other players who are usually in their teens or twenties.

The bigger problem, however, is that this whole microtransaction-fueled virtual ecosystem doesn’t provide only in-game bragging rights. This competitive or toxic behavior whereby players who haven’t invested money in the game are being called “Defaults” is not always contained inside the virtual space. Player skins have become a sort of a status symbol, and throughout the year there have been a few reports of bullying in schools where kids who play Fortnite and don’t own any player skins are either being called “Defaults” in a derogatory way by some of their fellow students, or they’re being singled out.

All in all, the latest campaign by Samsung and Cheil aims to spread the Fortnite Glow skin with the help of various Brazilian videogame streamers and give it to players who don’t own any in-game cosmetic items. This way, they can easily leave the default in-game character designs behind, should they want to do so. One could argue that the campaign doesn’t quite target the core issue – which is having an in-game reward system that revolves a lot around real money transactions – so whether or not the Glow skin will save players from being treated poorly inside or outside the game is another matter. Then again, Samsung doesn’t get to decide how a game like Fortnite is being monetized, so all we can do is to welcome the initiative. At the very least, more Fortnite players are bound to get a cool skin for their avatars.

Samsung partners with Watcha Play to expand its HDR10+ content

Samsung has announced a new partnership with Watcha in a bid to expand its HDR10+ content. The latter company launched the online video streaming service Watcha Play in 2016 and it grew in popularity partly due to having a monthly fee lower than Netflix.

With this new collaboration, Samsung aims to deliver more HDR10+ content to its customers. HDR10+ is supported by various Samsung smart TVs including its QLED lineup, the 2019 8K TV series, and all of its UHD models.

Watcha Play HDR10+ content will launch in H1 2020

More and more content providers are adopting the HDR10+ standard, but it won’t be until the first half of 2020 when Watcha Play will begin streaming HDR10+ content to Samsung TVs, according to Watcha CTO, Lee Tae-hyun.

Watcha Play is available only in South Korea at the time of writing, and it may never be released outside the country. Nevertheless, there are other ways to enjoy HDR10+ content on Samsung smart TVs elsewhere. Samsung Electronics claims it will keep increasing its influence ‘in the global television market by enhancing [its] leadership in the HDR specification industry.’

As proof of Samsung’s ambitions to expand its HDR content, the Disney+ on-demand video streaming service just launched in the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands this week, boasting numerous titles that support the HDR10+ format along with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

[Poll Results!] What’s your opinion of One UI 2.0? Do you like what you see?

November 7 will mark the first anniversary One UI, the modern and intuitive user interface that can be found on all Galaxy smartphones and tablets running Android Pie and on Samsung’s latest wearables. It brought a major overhaul to the look and feel of the software on Samsung devices, along with plenty of new features. Samsung has added new features with minor upgrades to One UI since then, and the latest stable version of One UI is 1.5, as seen on the Galaxy Note 10 and some other new devices launched in the last couple of months.

We had exclusively revealed that Android 10 would be accompanied by version 2.0 of One UI, and many of us have been using One UI 2.0 on our Galaxy S10s and Note 10s thanks to the One UI 2.0 beta program. It brings plenty of improvements to the user interface and adds some new features, and while things may change as the beta program continues, it’s safe to say that One UI 2.0 on the stable version of Android 10 for Galaxy devices will be pretty similar to what you can see on the Android 10 beta.

To those who have been using One UI 2.0 on the Android 10 beta, we pose this question: Do you like what it has to offer? Do you feel One UI 2.0 makes enough changes to warrant all the anticipation, or were you expecting it to be a bigger update as far as all the improvements and new features are concerned? Vote in the poll below, then take to the comments section to discuss what you like or don’t like about One UI 2.0 in more detail.

Results: Well, it seems One UI 2.0 is not too much of a visual upgrade for many, as 42 percent voters said they would have liked to see more UI changes. 28 percent said a few more features would have been nice, and that’s a sentiment we agree with as well, although Samsung has done a commendable job of bringing new features to its flagship phones separately from Android OS updates. 25 percent voters love One UI 2.0’s improvements, while 3 percent said they don’t like it and would rather not update to Android 10. The last 2 percent said they aren’t down with all the changes included in One UI 2.0.

What's your opinion of One UI 2.0? Do you like what you see?

New Samsung tablet (SM-T307U) discovered, here are some details

Amidst the insane number of smartphones it has been launching in the last few months, Samsung continues to find time to make a few tablets as well. The Wi-Fi Alliance has revealed the existence of a new tablet from the company. A Samsung SM-T307U was certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance last week both as a tablet and as a router, and at this time, very little is known about the device.

32GB of storage, Android Pie, and just one color option

Our sources tell us the SM-T307U’s color options include just brown and it has 32GB of on-board storage. The Wi-Fi certification reveals it runs Android Pie; it supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks, and the ‘7’ in the model number indicates it will have cellular connectivity. Unfortunately, it’s not known what the tablet will be called. The SM-T3xx model number series is usually reserved for Samsung’s 8-inch tablets, and the SM-T307U could be part of the Galaxy Tab A lineup.

We don’t see any signs of a variant of the SM-T307 for markets outside the US, so it remains to be seen if it will be a globally sold device or one that’s limited to North America (and possibly Sprint). As always, we’ll keep an eye out for more information and let you know as soon as we find something.

Samsung already working on Galaxy M20 and M30 Android 10 update!

With the Galaxy M series, Samsung finally took a convincing stance against the Chinese competition that had been wearing it down and taking away its sales in the budget segment in India. The Galaxy M20 was the first device in the series, and it offered crazy good specs (including a 5,000 mAh battery) for a low price. The M20 went on to become a major success in the Indian market, and Samsung later launched the Galaxy M30, which came with a few upgrades such as a Super AMOLED screen.

And it seems the Galaxy M20 and Galaxy M30 did so well that Samsung wants to update the two phones to Android 10 as quickly as possible. The M20 and M30 have been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance with Android 10 onboard, and we can also confirm that Samsung is already developing test firmware for the devices. The current Android 10 test builds for the M20 and M30 sport firmware version M205FDDU3CSK3 and M305FDDU2CSK3 respectively.

Will non-flagship Galaxy phones be getting Android 10 sooner than expected?

The fact that Samsung is already testing Android 10 for the Galaxy M20 and M30 is quite interesting. The M20 and M30 have already received one major Android OS upgrade, so it’s extremely impressive that Samsung is already preparing the Android 10 update for both phones. Traditionally, the second Android version upgrade for budget and mid-range devices comes out anytime between nine to twelve months after that particular version has been released by Google.

It’s also not normal for Samsung to start development on the next Android OS update for non-flagship devices with affordable phones like the Galaxy M20. The Galaxy M20 costs an equivalent of $140 in India, and we would have expected Samsung to kickstart development with a device like the Galaxy A50 instead. All of these are signs that things are changing for the better when it comes to Samsung’s software update policy, although nothing can be said for certain at this time as the Android 10 update is yet to be released for any Galaxy smartphone.

And even though Android 10 is now being developed for the Galaxy M20 and M30, there’s no telling when the update will actually arrive for these phones. It usually takes at least three months after a device gets Wi-Fi certification with a newer version of Android before the update is released, and Samsung is likely to update only the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 series to Android 10 before 2020.

Wondering whether your Galaxy phone or tablet is eligible for the Android 10 update? Find the answer here, and check out the video below to see what features and improvements Android 10 and One UI 2.0 will bring to Galaxy devices.
