Apple Watch Series 7 shows Samsung the definition of slim bezels

The Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic are the best Wear OS smartwatches on the market right now. They run the latest Wear OS version developed in collaboration with Samsung, and they’re powered by a new chipset that was created specifically for wearable devices. The Galaxy Watch 4 series also refreshes the design once again, which brings us to one of Samsung’s biggest rivals in the wearable market: Apple.

The Galaxy Watch 4 series now has a new competitor in the Apple Watch Series 7. The fresh model highlights — once again — some of the differences in design between Apple and Samsung wearables.

The Apple Watch Series 7 has a rectangular form factor that contrasts Samsung’s circular smartwatches, but it’s also a subtle yet obvious continuation of the original design language. Perhaps more so than Samsung’s newer smartwatches relative to their predecessors.

The Series 7 has a new display with much slimmer bezels all around, and it kind of makes us wish the Galaxy Watch 4 was similar in this regard.

Samsung’s next-gen watches might need to work on bezels

For a company that’s regarded by many as ‘fashion-oriented,’ Apple sure isn’t in a rush to change the design language of its smartwatch. The Series 7 looks almost identical to the previous model, with one big exception: the bezels are considerably thinner, resulting in a more streamlined and modern look.

The Galaxy Watch 4 doesn’t distance itself too much from the previous models, i.e., the Galaxy Watch Active 2, but it doesn’t seem to be pushing the envelope as much as Apple’s newest model, either.

It’s quite obvious that Apple and Samsung follow different philosophies in regards to their smartwatches, and while the Galaxy Watch 4 is great in its own rights, we can’t help but wonder how Samsung’s smartwatch evolution would’ve looked like had the company focused more on trimming down the bezel.

On the other hand, the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic’s bezel is hidden behind an actual physical rotating bezel, and it’s one of the best-looking (if not the best) smartwatches around.

Moving forward, should Samsung focus more on trimming down display bezels for its Galaxy smartwatches? Do you believe the Apple Watch Series 7 will be a threat to the Galaxy Watch 4 series because of its new streamlined design? Galaxy S21 FE launch date is reportedly January 11

Last week, SamMobile exclusively reported that the Galaxy S21 FE will likely get released in January 2021. Since then, a few reports emerged via Twitter to suggest otherwise. They hinted at a much earlier launch for the next-gen Fan Edition device, and now, after a bit of back and forth, leakers are doing another 180-degree turn on account of new bits of information surrounding the alleged Galaxy S21 FE launch.

According to @jon_prosser, the Galaxy S21 FE got delayed until January — much like SamMobile heard before. But more to the matter at hand, the launch date was reportedly rescheduled by Samsung for January 11, 2022.

Galaxy S21 FE coming January 11, claims a new report

Samsung may have originally wanted to introduce the Galaxy S21 FE in October, but that’s no longer on the table, according to our sources and others.

For reasons unknown — though they might be related to the global semiconductor shortage — the fate of the Galaxy S21 FE was weighted heavily by Samsung. But thankfully for Fan Edition enthusiasts, the Galaxy S21 FE managed to dodge cancellation, and instead, it got delayed until January 11.

If true, it will be interesting to see how the Galaxy S21 FE will perform next year, given that all eyes are going to be fixed on the Galaxy S22 flagship series early next year. The Galaxy S21 FE will have to be released for a killer price, otherwise it could be easily forgotten.

Samsung spills out Galaxy M52 5G and M22 launch details for Spain

Samsung’s latest additions to its mid-range Galaxy smartphone lineup are slowly becoming available in more markets. After launching in Russia last week, Samsung announced the availability details for both the Galaxy M22 and Galaxy M52 5G in Spain. The two mid-range phones will enter a pre-order period from next week, and early adopters will benefit from hefty discounts.

The Galaxy M52 5G and M22 will be available for pre-order in Spain from October 18 to November 1. The phones will be priced at €369 and €209, respectively, but only throughout the pre-order period. From November 2 and onwards, the Galaxy M52 5G and Galaxy M22 will cost €449 and €259.

The two phones will be available for pre-order from Amazon and PcComponentes. Meanwhile, the Galaxy M22 is listed at Samsung’s Spanish portal without a price tag, but the Galaxy M52 5G is seemingly available right now for €417. It could be an error on Samsung’s part, seeing how the phone is supposed to enter its pre-order period next week.

The Galaxy M22 is a rebranded Galaxy F22 with minor design and hardware differences. The Galaxy M52 5G, on the other hand, is more than that. It delivers great performance and battery life, has an excellent main camera, and full-featured One UI. On the other hand, it lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack, stereo speakers, and an IP rating. You can read all about it in our review linked below.

Galaxy Watch 4 is now a COVID monitoring tool for Australia’s workforce

Samsung Australia announced that it’s trialing the Vital Monitoring System (VMS) solution from re-open.com on the Galaxy Watch 4 series. VMS is part of the re-open.com cloud-based platform created by Deakin University, NTRI, and SaniteX Global to support the world as it recovers from COVID-19.

More specifically, VMS (Vital Monitoring System) is a system designed for employers and employees. It’s meant to improve safety for the workforce by gathering health-related information from users through the Galaxy Watch 4’s health sensors — such as the heart rate monitor and SpO2 sensor — and providing a holistic medical screening solution from home.

Employers who implement the system will require employees to share health information from the Galaxy Watch 4 with the VMS system on the re-open.com platform every morning. This data will be combined with additional information gathered through a survey, and if the user passes the screening, they’ll receive a QR code which they can use to access their workplace. Processed data include temperature, heart rate and blood oxygen levels, and so on.

It’s important to note that all this health data is encrypted and the only people who could access it and provide assistance are clinicians. The encrypted health-related information can’t be accessed or read by the employer. VMS only acts as a health screening tool designed to decrease health risks at the workplace and increase safety upon returning to work, but it isn’t a way for employers to monitor the workforce. According to Samsung, the VMS screening tool is compliant with the highest standard of health privacy regulations.

Samsung Health users are displeased by the redesigned heart rate graph

Samsung recently made some UI changes to its Health platform, and many Galaxy smartwatch users don’t seem too happy with the outcome. In short, the Continuous Heart Rate graph in Samsung Health is gone. It was replaced by a new type of graph that averages the user’s heart rate into time bars.

The advantage to having this new system is that it easily allows users to read the highest and lowest BMP rates at any given time. On the other hand, it lacks the granular type of data the Continuous Heart Rate graph could produce.

Galaxy Watch 4 users on Reddit were among the first to notice this new change, and some are now even blaming Wear OS or the Watch 4 itself. However, the main component that Samsung updated is the Health app — not Wear OS or the Watch 4 series. In other words, this new graph should replace the old one in Health regardless of which Galaxy measuring device you’re using.

A Samsung representative confirmed that this is not an error but an intentional change. The Continuous Heart Rate graph got removed with the latest update to the Samsung Health app, and the only way to get it back is to install an older version of Samsung Health that retains the previous graph design. However, this won’t be a permanent solution if you want to experience any other new Health features that could be added through updates later down the line.

Have you noticed this change in Samsung Health when using the Galaxy Watch 4 or another smartwatch model? Do you prefer the old graph design or the new one? Share your thoughts below.

Android 11 and One UI 3.1 update is finally live for Galaxy A21 in USA

Countless Samsung customers are either looking forward to Android 12 and One UI 4.0 or are already testing the beta firmware on their Galaxy S21s. But while all this is happening, a few other, not-so-known Galaxy phones are still waiting for Android 11 and One UI 3.1 to arrive. One such phone is the Galaxy A21, or rather, it was.

Samsung is now finally rolling out the long-awaited Android 11 firmware update for the Galaxy A21 (SM-A215U). The update is rolling out in the USA and carries firmware version A215USQU5BUI4. The firmware update is also accompanied by a newer security patch, specifically for the month of September.

Android 11 and One UI 3.1 revitalize the Galaxy A21

One of the most noticeable changes introduced by Android 11 and One UI 3.1 is the refreshed user interface. The overall UI is redesigned for better legibility and reachability, and most Samsung apps — like Gallery, Calendar, Samsung Keyboard, Samsung Internet — got refreshed for One UI 3.1.

There are tons of new features and improvements to look forward to, and of course, a new security patch is always welcome. Galaxy A21 owners in the USA should be able to download the Android 11 One UI 3.1 update by tapping the update notification once it arrives or by opening Settings on the phone, navigating to Software update, and tapping Download and install.

Galaxy A21 owners who don’t want to wait for the update to reach their phones OTA can download the latest update from our firmware database and install it manually using a PC.

The Galaxy A21 shipped with Android 10, and beyond Android 11, the phone is technically eligible for another firmware update to Android 12 and One UI 4.0. We expect this newer OS version to become available for the Galaxy A21 eventually, although, given how late Android 11 arrived, Samsung probably won’t be in a rush to push out the next major OS update for this low-cost Galaxy device.

Samsung brings a new, colorful weather widget with One UI 4.0

Samsung has released the Android 12-based One UI 4.0 beta update to the Galaxy S21 series in select markets, including Germany, India, Poland, South Korea, the UK, and the US. Along with all the features included in the stock Android 12 codebase, One UI 4.0 brings some additional features, including a new widget picker and new lock screen widgets. We have discovered that the new software also brings a new weather widget.

The South Korean firm calls it a Dynamic Weather widget. It can be seen towards the top of the Weather section in the widget picker screen. Unlike existing weather widgets, the Dynamic Weather widget uses a colorful background and cute animations. The animations and background colors change depending on the current weather conditions. For example, it changes to light blue when the weather is cloudy and grey when thunderstorms occur.

It also displays the current location, last refreshed time, and a button to refresh the information manually. It also uses Samsung’s new loading animation that was introduced with One UI 4.0. Of course, you can change the new widget’s size, depending on your preference.

Google is destroying Samsung’s biggest advantage over its rivals

It was a big deal when Samsung committed to providing three Android OS upgrades to compatible devices. There weren’t many Android OEMs that were doing this. Not only that, but the company also promised four years of security updates.

Google is close to launching its new Pixel 6 series. It’s aiming to shake things up with the latest smartphones. In doing so, the internet search giant is actually destroying Samsung’s biggest advantage over the competition.

Samsung’s software update advantage is gone

It has already been reported that Google will provide five years of security updates to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Samsung only provides four years worth of updates so this is far from ideal for the company.

There’s a new report now that claims Google will also provide four Android OS upgrades to the Pixel 6 series. No other Android OEM does that. Google has no problem doing that since it owns Android. It can do whatever it wants.

The fact that Google can now do this is related to the use of its first in-house designed Tensor chipset for its smartphones. Google now has total control over the hardware-software experience on its phones. It’s doing what Apple has long been able to do. We highlighted how this can be a big threat for Samsung. That threat is now clear as day.

The advantage that Samsung built by promising three years of OS upgrades will now be destroyed by Google. It’s no secret that people are holding on to their flagship phones for longer. If you’re spending that much money on a phone, wouldn’t you want the assurance that it will get new software features for the next four years?

Google is due to unveil the new Pixel smartphones on October 19. Samsung has an event scheduled for October 20 but don’t keep your fingers crossed for the Galaxy S21 FE.

Galaxy Note 10 Lite picks up the October 2021 security update

One week after releasing the October 2021 security update to the Galaxy Note 10 and the Galaxy Note 10+, Samsung has released it to the Galaxy Note 10 Lite as well. The smartphone, which was launched in January 2020, has been consistently getting security updates every month.

The Galaxy Note 10 Lite has started getting a new software update in France. It comes with firmware version N770FXXS8EUI4 and includes the October 2021 security patch. Samsung had revealed earlier this month that its latest security patch fixes more than 60 privacy and security-related vulnerabilities. The new software might also include general bug fixes and device stability improvements.

If you are a Galaxy Note 10 Lite user in France, you might have already received the notification of the update. If you haven’t received the update yet, you can head to Settings » Software update on your smartphone and tap on Download and install to check for the update manually. You can also download the latest firmware file from our firmware database and flash it manually.

Samsung could release this update to the Galaxy Note 10 Lite in more markets over the next few days. The smartphone debuted with Android 10-based One UI 2.0. It received the Android 11-based One UI 3 update earlier this year.
