Anyone having poorer Wi-Fi range on Android Pie beta compared to Oreo?

The Android Pie beta has been impressively stable since day one as far as beta software is concerned, with a number of new features and the beautiful One UI on offer. However, it seems Android Pie has some trouble with Wi-Fi range compared to Android Oreo. Networks that are visible on a Galaxy Note 9 running Oreo don’t always show up on the Android Pie beta, and the latest beta for the Galaxy S9 seems to have issues as well.

Now, I should point out that this is something only I have noticed here at SamMobile. The 5G Wi-Fi network that I use at home has always been weaker than the 2.4GHz network in my workroom thanks to the distance from the router, but it has never been an issue for my Galaxy Note 9 (or any other Samsung phone with Wi-Fi 802.11ac support) to connect to that 5GHz network. On the Android Pie beta, however, both the S9 and Note 9 fail to show that 5GHz network despite repeated scans and despite being in the same location where things work wonderfully on Oreo.

Wi-Fi range is the issue, not the speeds once connected

Strangely enough, if I do manage to connect to the 5GHz network by holding the phone in the direction of the router, it maintains the connection just like it does on Oreo. Download and upload speeds remain the same as well. But, again, the issue is that neither the S9 nor Note 9 show me the 5GHz network in the first place. And it has been quite vexing considering my gigabit connection is severely limited on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.

It’s unclear if this is a known or widespread bug, so I thought we should ask our readers if they have noticed something similar. If you have, do let us know in the comments! I’ll go report this in the Samsung Members beta feedback section in the meantime.

New One UI beta brings Android Pie’s Adaptive Battery feature

Samsung isn’t done adding all of the Android Pie features to the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 One UI beta it seems. The latest beta update for the Galaxy S9 and Note 9 brings one of Android Pie’s highlight features: Adaptive Battery. Adaptive Battery is an AI-based feature that learns how you use various apps on your phone over time and uses that data to improve battery life.

Adaptive Battery is all about your habits

Adaptive Battery works by learning your usage patterns for various apps. It allows the apps you use regularly to stay in memory after you exit them. Apps you use rarely are killed as soon as you exit them so that they don’t run in the background and waste battery life or use Wi-Fi or mobile data. And, for example, if you tend to regularly use the Twitter app for 10 minutes every morning after waking up at 7 AM and then use it again only at 1PM in the afternoon, Adaptive Battery can stop the app in the background in those few hours and wake it back up at 1PM.

Of course, Galaxy smartphones have already had similar battery-saving measures. For example, apps that are not used for a particular number of days can be put to sleep automatically until the next time you open them. However, Adaptive Battery is important because it’s built into core Android. It also uses artificial intelligence to learn usage patterns instead of going by the number of days an app has been left unused. Just how much of a difference it will make is something we can’t say at the moment, though, as Adaptive Battery needs a few days to start doing its job.

How to access Adaptive Battery option in Android Pie

If you’re running the Android Pie beta, here’s how you can find Adaptive Battery. Open the Settings app, tap Device Care, then tap the Battery icon. Here, tap the three-dot button on the top right of the screen and then the settings option. You will find the Adaptive Battery toggle here, along with many of the other battery-saving features.

Could the Galaxy M bring a renaissance for Samsung in the affordable market?

It’s no secret that Samsung has been struggling. The company manages to maintain its dominance of the global smartphone market but the lead is coming under pressure with each passing quarter. Its reliance on brand recognition alone hasn’t done enough to stop the bleeding in India, one of the most important markets for any smartphone company. While the company accounted for just over 15 percent of the lucrative Chinese market just a few years ago, it barely even cracks one percent anymore.

There are a few factors as to why it has been under threat by predominantly Chinese manufacturers. Some of them don’t have the kind of overhead that Samsung does. It spends a lot more on research, marketing and promotional than many of its rivals. They have also relied more on online sales instead of first trying to build out their retail networks. Companies like Xiaomi have coupled that with aggressively priced smartphones that offer customers more bang for their buck.

Samsung’s dominance is under increasing pressure

On the other hand, Huawei has a stated goal of becoming the top smartphone vendor in the world. That means it has its sights set firmly on Samsung’s position and it’s making strides. The company is on track to ship 200 million smartphones before the end of this year. It has taken the second position from Apple already. Huawei has deployed its Honor sub-brand in emerging markets with the same strategy much to Samsung’s chagrin. The company has also been quick to bring new technologies and trends to market, be that gradient colors or in-display fingerprint sensors, which Samsung has been late to follow.

Samsung has consistently been making some of the best flagship Android phones over the past few years. That hasn’t been enough from a business point of view, though. Market research data shows that customers are holding on to their phones longer. It doesn’t help that flagship devices have firmly crossed the $1,000 threshold. Even in that segment of the market, Huawei has been quick to bring new technologies such as a 7nm chip and reverse wireless charging, a feature that Samsung is now expected to offer with the Galaxy S10.

The company is not oblivious to all that has been happening around it. The company said earlier this year that it’s revamping its strategy to better compete against rivals. It’s now packing mid-range devices with technology that hasn’t even debuted on its flagship models yet. For example, the Galaxy A8s is Samsung’s first smartphone with the Infinity-O display. The company and indeed the world’s first quad-camera smartphone is the mid-range Galaxy A9. It has also reorganized its China division to better compete locally.

Samsung may need to give its rivals a taste of their own medicine

The next step seems to be the launch of a new Galaxy M series that will consolidate its offerings in the budget segment. At least one of the devices, the Galaxy M20, is now expected to come with a 5,000mAh battery. It hasn’t really offered such big batteries in any of its handsets before, the Galaxy A9 Pro being the exception. We have also revealed that the Galaxy M series will first be released in markets across Asia, Middle East and Africa. From all that’s known about the Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20, it seems that these devices have been developed with the idea of offering customers more bang for their buck.

One also has to consider consumer behavior. People like us who do this for a living or those who like to follow tech closely know that the reality goes beyond numbers. More RAM doesn’t necessarily mean a significant improvement in performance. Or that the number of megapixels isn’t directly proportional to camera quality. Many average customers tend to consider the specs on paper when deciding which device to buy. That’s one of the reasons why Chinese smartphone makers tend to highlight such numbers prominently in their marketing materials.

Perhaps Samsung now feels that its budget offerings also need to have numbers that can hold their own against rivals. A customer looking to spend around $200 on an affordable device may gravitate towards one that has a 5,000mAh battery without much thought to the chipset or any gimmicky software features. It’s an overly simplistic view but it seems to have worked quite well for Chinese manufacturers.

Specs that jump out to customers are just one factor. Whether or not the Galaxy M series heralds a renaissance for Samsung in this market also largely depends on pricing. If it’s able to get the combination right and give its rivals a taste of their own medicine, Samsung might just cause the Chinese to sit up and take notice.

Samsung updates The Frame and Serif TV with QLED panels

Along with making TVs focused on smart features and picture quality, Samsung’s lineup also boasts a couple of lifestyle TVs, The Frame and the Serif TV, that prioritiz design over everything else. These home décor-focused TVs, unfortunately, came with LED panels that put them at a disadvantage in terms of picture quality when compared to Samsung’s QLED offerings.

Though Samsung launched new Frame TVs with design and feature improvements in July this year, they still lacked QLED panels. Thankfully, the company is finally fixing this glaring drawback in 2019. Samsung has announced new Frame TV and Serif TV models for 2019, and they all come with QLED panels and smart TV features similar to other mainstream Samsung TVs.

QLED brings better picture quality

Other than packing QLED tech and adding all the latest Samsung smart TV features like Bixby voice control, it appears Samsung hasn’t made any drastic changes to its new lifestyle TVs. The addition of QLED ensures better picture quality with deeper blacks and more contrast, bringing these TVs on par with other mainstream Samsung models.

Samsung is also bringing more artworks to The Frame Art Store, as reported previously. The Serif TV, which was an even more niche offering than The Frame and sold mostly in furniture shops, will be more widely available in 2019 at various consumer electronics retailers.

Both the new models will be on display in the large lifestyle TV exhibition zone of Samsung’s booth at CES 2019 in Las Vegas next month.

“The traditional TV was only focused on technical features, such as picture quality and performance, but now TVs are also a lifestyle platform that blends in consumers’ daily life. This year’s models of The Frame and SERIF TV are enhanced lifestyle TVs that deliver a TV experience like nothing before,” said Jongsuk Choo, Executive VP of Samsung’s Visual Display Business.

Samsung trademarks possible Galaxy S10 camera feature: Artistic Live Focus

Samsung has filed a trademark application for a new camera feature named Artistic Live Focus. Chances are, we will see this feature arrive in the upcoming Galaxy S10 and its different variants.

Galaxy S10 camera: Artistic Live Focus

Samsung is keeping its IP lawyers very busy these days. Recently we saw all kinds of new trademark applications surface – from various blockchain-related features to a set of new augmented reality marks. However, a trademark filed yesterday and published today might shed some direct light on a possible new Galaxy S10 camera feature.

In the European Union, Samsung wants to register the term Artistic Live Focus (PDF), as Galaxy Club points out. The description included in the application makes no secret of what the trademark is intended for: ‘Smartphones … computer software for processing digital images.’ Of course, the existing Live Focus feature present in many current Galaxy devices provides the biggest hint as to what Artistic Live Focus could be: an extended mode for making photos with a sharp foreground object and a nicely blurred background.

As to the artistic part, we can only imagine what Samsung might have up its sleeves. Perhaps, more manual control options will be added to the current Live Focus mode. This is, however, nothing more than our own speculative interpretation.

Mind you, it is no secret Samsung will try to wow the world with the Galaxy S10’s camera setup. After all, every single S10 variant will have two or more cameras on the back, with the big Galaxy S10 Plus even sporting a triple or quad-camera setup. Also, aside from the release of one or two cheap devices in the Galaxy M series, we fully expect the Galaxy S10 to be Samsung’s next big device to hit the market. The launch of the Galaxy S10 is expected to take place on or around February 20, with the release in early March.
