Verizon update brings new navigation bar features for Galaxy S8 and S8+

T-Mobile had released an update for the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ earlier this month, which promised to bring Daydream compatibility to the smartphones. However, users reported after installing the update that the phones still weren’t compatible with Daydream, and the carrier corrected the official changelog.

Now, Verizon has released an update for Samsung’s latest flagship smartphones, which is supposed to bring Daydream support. However, Android Police is reporting that the update didn’t bring Daydream compatibility to the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+. What users do get are new navigation bar features, including new pastel colors and a little button that lets you hide the navigation bar.

The updates with build numbers NRD90M.G950USQU1AQG4 and NRD90M.G955USQU1AQG4 also bring July 2017 security patch to the Galaxy S8 and S8+ as well as an option to send GIFs during voice calls. The update is rolling out now, and if you have installed it already, let us know if the phones actually work with the Daydream headset.

SM-W2018 clamshell to come with a Snapdragon 835 CPU and 6GB of RAM

Twitter tipster @mmddj_china has revealed that Samsung’s upcoming SM-W2018 clamshell smartphone will sport a Snapdragon 835 processor and 6GB of RAM — so it’s safe to say that it isn’t going to be a slouch when it comes to performance.

What will probably let the SM-W2018 down, however, is its software. PhoneArena believes that it will ship running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, which is disappointing; especially when you consider the handset is rumored to retail for around $2,000.

The rest of the internals aren’t particularly impressive, either. The SM-W2018 is expected to feature a pair of 4.2-inch Full HD displays, a 12MP rear-facing camera with Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS), a 5MP selfie shooter, 64GB of storage and a 2,300mAh battery.

To be honest, unless Samsung is using some sort of battery-extending witchcraft, we’re not sure how a 2,300mAh cell is going to power two displays and a Snapdragon 835 processor for eight hours, let alone twenty-four.

Typically, Samsung reserves its clamshell smartphones for China, though if you reside elsewhere, you’ll be able to import one — but it’s looking like you’ll need to pay north of 2,000 bucks for the pleasure.

Samsung launches Galaxy S8+ with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage in Brazil

Samsung officially launched the Galaxy S8+ with 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage a couple of months back. This variant of the Galaxy S8+ is only being sold in a handful of markets, including Hong Kong and India.

It was reported that this variant could be launched in markets outside South Korea and we’re seeing that happen.T he company today announced that the Galaxy S8+ with 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage has been launched in Brazil.

All of the other specifications remain the same so customers will get the same hardware package with this variant in Brazil that they do elsewhere. The only difference is the 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage which can also be expanded externally via microSD cards up to 256GB.

The Galaxy S8+ with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage that’s being sold in Brazil has also been manufactured in the country. It’s only available in the Midnight Black color. The handset is now available for purchase for a suggested price of R$4,799 or $1,500.

This is the only variant of the Galaxy S8+ that costs over $1,000 but it seems that customers in Brazil will be paying quite a high premium for this device.

Pricing always varies by market as there are several factors that influence pricing. The same Galaxy S8+ variant that’s being sold in Brazil for $1,500 can be purchased in India for $1,162.

Samsung now offering 10-year burn-in warranty for QLED TVs globally

Samsung announced several months ago that it was going to provide a 10-year burn-in warranty for its premium QLED TVs. It initially extended this commitment to customers in South Korea and Europe before offering it to customers in North America later. The company has now said that it will offer the same warranty globally.

“With strong confidence in QLED TV’s product performance, we are offering a 10-year warranty for our QLED TVs around the world,” a representative for the company said.

Samsung has been building up to this in recent months as it has been rolling out the premium televisions to more markets across the globe. The premium QLED TVs were launched in Brazil last month and Samsung promised all customers that they will get a 10-year warranty against burn-in.

The burn-in phenomenon refers to the possibility of the screen appearing as though it’s stained or the image not being displayed properly. It can be caused by the same picture or image being repeatedly exposed to a single spot on the TV screen. This can lead to the color of the picture or image not being displayed properly or the screen looking like it has a stain.

Samsung already provides 5-year warranties for other components of the QLED TVs. That’s also unusual given that most manufacturers only provide a 2-year warranty for the panel and 1-year warranty for components like the motherboard.

[Update: 6GB of RAM] Galaxy Note 8 Emperor Edition to come with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage

Samsung is testing a variant of the Galaxy Note 8 that will ship with 6GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, according to renowned Weibo tipster Ice Universe. The handset, which has been dubbed the Emperor Edition, is expected to launch in South Korea alongside the base model that’ll come with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, before inevitably making its way to China.

In addition, Ice Universe revealed that the Galaxy Note 8 will hit the shelves in three colors, including Midnight Black and Orchid Grey. Rival tipster Roland Quant believes that the third variant will be a new Deep Blue hue that’s different to the Coral Blue shade that debuted on the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7, though we’re still yet to see any evidence to support his claim.

Recent rumors suggest that the Galaxy Note 8 will sport a 6.3-inch edge-to-edge Infinity Display, an Exynos 8895/Snapdragon 835 CPU and a 3,300mAh battery. It should also ship running Android 7.1.1 Nougat (no, not Android O) skinned with the latest version of Samsung’s Experience — formerly known as TouchWiz — user interface and support Daydream out of the box.

Digital news outlet OSEN reported last month that the firm is working on another model that’ll have 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Unlike the Emperor Edition, this variant is set to launch in Europe, North America and South America, where it will carry a price tag of more than $1,100. If that turns out to be true, the Galaxy Note 8 will be the most expensive smartphone Samsung’s released to date.

Update: Ice Universe has altered his original prediction. The Emperor Edition will reportedly ship with 6GB of RAM, not 8GB. We’ve added the new information to the original article.

T-Mobile Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge get July security patch

A couple of weeks after it released the June security patch for these handsets, T-Mobile has now started rolling out the July security for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge on its network. The firmware update for these handsets follows similar updates that T-Mobile has already released for the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy Note 5 recently.

Firmware version G930TUVU4BQG5 and G935TUVU4BQG5 is now being rolled out by T-Mobile for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge. The carrier has released said update over-the-air and it should be live for all users in the near future.

It’s a minor update which doesn’t bring much except the July security patch and the usual slew of stability and performance improvements. The update weighs in at just under 48MB so users shouldn’t expect much in the way of new features.

The July security patch brings fixes for 65 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) discovered in the Android operating system. It also includes fixes for 16 vulnerabilities in Samsung’s own software.

T-Mobile is rolling out this firmware update over-the-air so it may take a while before it lands on all supported handsets. Users can also try manually downloading the update by going to Settings > Software update > Download updates manually.

Samsung’s smartphone market share in China estimated at just 3 percent

China is one of the most lucrative smartphone markets on the planet but Samsung has been facing challenges in retaining its lost glory. Most of its troubles can be attributed to strong competition from local manufacturers. The political tensions between China and South Korea aren’t helping as well because it leads many to shun the company’s products.

The latest data from Counterpoint Research shows that Samsung’s smartphone market share in China for the second quarter of this year is at 3 percent. Chinese smartphone manufacturers are firmly in the lead with a combined 87 percent market share. The top four brands in China include Huawei, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi.

Huawei and Vivo were the fastest growing brands in China during the second quarter followed by Oppo and Xiaomi. They continue to extend their lead over Apple and Samsung. Apple is the only foreign company with a decent share of the country’s smartphone market.

Apple accounted for 8.2 percent of the market in the second quarter, almost unchanged from 8.5 percent last year. On the other hand, Samsung’s market share has declined from 7 percent in Q2 2016 to just 3 percent in this past quarter.

Clearly, the company needs to do more in order to win more customers in the fiercely competitive Chinese smartphone market.
