More renders of BTS Edition Galaxy Buds+ leak

It was revealed two days ago that Samsung will launch a special edition of the Galaxy S20+ in partnership with Korean music band BTS. The company also has plans to sell the BTS Edition of the Galaxy Buds+ in purple. Now, clearer renders of the purple Galaxy Buds+ have been leaked on the internet by Evan Blass.

The BTS Edition Galaxy Buds+ will come in a black box with seven purple-colored heart-shaped icons to depict seven members of the music band. There’s also a Samsung | BTS co-branding logo on the box. The company hasn’t revealed the price of the BTS Edition Galaxy Buds+ yet, but there’s a possibility of the limited-edition earphones costing more than the regular version.

The earbuds themselves have the purple finish on the touch-sensitive area, while the rest of the body remains in black. The case has BTS’ signature purple color on the outside, while the insides are colored in black. There’s a purple-colored BTS logo on one earbud and a heart-shaped icon on the other. Similar logos can also be found on the front of the case.

The Galaxy S20+ BTS Edition will be launched on July 9. Interested customers can pre-order the special edition phone from June 19 until July 5. It will go on sale in South Korea and some other countries, and Samsung has partnered with French books and electronics store Fnac for this launch. Samsung had also launched a Thom Browne version of the Galaxy Z Flip.

You can either pick it up from one of Verizon’s stores or order a free, 2-day doorstep delivery.

Verizon is selling the Galaxy S20 5G UW in three colors: Cloud Pink, Cloud White, and Cosmic Grey. The Cloud White colorway is currently exclusive to Verizon’s network. The carrier is also offering a $150 discount in the form of bill credits if you purchase the smartphone using the carrier’s 24-month installment plan ($35.41/month). You can now get the Galaxy A51 from Verizon for free on a 2-year plan

The Galaxy A51 is Samsung’s most successful smartphone of the year so far, to the point where you might be owning one already. But if you don’t and you’re looking to buy a Galaxy A51 in the USA, Verizon has a pretty good deal wherein you can acquire the phone for $0.00 per month on a 24-month installment plan.

Verizon initially launched the Galaxy A51 for $16.66 a month on a 2-year agreement. The carrier later dropped the price to $10 a month, and now it lowered the monthly fee even further to $0. It’s unclear whether this is a limited-time offer, but you don’t have to trade-in your older phone to take advantage of it. All you have to do is sign up for a new line on an unlimited plan, and your savings will then be added to your monthly bill in equal credit amounts over the 2-year period.

The Galaxy A51 is successful for many reasons, mainly because it offers a decent set of specifications without burning a hole in one’s pocket. It has a large 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2400 by 1080, an Exynos 9611 chipset, and in the case of Verizon’s model, it has 4GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage expandable via microSD. Check the links below for our review on the Galaxy A51 and for the latest offer from Verizon.

Unannounced Exynos M6 core gets detailed by ex-Austin engineers

Samsung was developing two more Exynos custom cores before the company shut down its custom CPU development arm. SamMobile reported on the unannounced M6 and M7 cores a couple of months ago, and now it turns out that Samsung had the M6 custom core fairly deep in development when it pulled the plug on its operations in Austin.

In a paper called Evolution of the Samsung Exynos CPU Microarchitecture written by numerous ex-Samsung Austin engineers, a few key specifications of the M6 custom core were revealed. The M6 sounds like it could’ve been a powerful beast, at least on paper, no pun intended. But it needs to be stressed that there’s no guarantee for the M6 to still be on track for a commercial release.

Custom M6 core: 5nm and large cache

Samsung’s M6 custom silicon was supposed be built on a 5nm process node. The CPU core had a frequency of 2.8GHz, same as the existing M5 core beating at the heart of the Exynos 990. However, the M6 had 128KB L1 cache, 2MB L2 cache shared between 2 cores, and 4MB L3 cache.

Interestingly enough, the paper also mentions that  Samsung’s goal throughout the existence of the Exynos custom cores was to improve performance across all types of workloads, as seen in one of the images below. According to the source material, the average IPC (instructions per cycle) of the M1 custom core is 1.06, while the M6 has an average IPC of 2.71.

Even though these specs are promising, we may never know the true potential of the M6 custom core in the real world. Samsung might pull a rabbit out of the hat and release the M6 core next year as the last big thing to come out of its Austin R&D Center, or the company may have already shelved this project. If there’s going to be more to this story, we’ll let you know.

Samsung OLEDs proclaimed world’s best 5G smartphone displays

Samsung’s latest OLED panels are currently the world’s best options for 5G-ready smartphones, a top display authority has announced. Switzerland-based Societe Generale de Surveillance (SGS) awarded two of the company’s mobile displays with “Seamless” and “Seamless Pro” rankings in regards to their ability to handle image data received on the fly. It’s unclear whether the said displays are already in commercial use, with Samsung mentioning both 90Hz and 120Hz modules in today’s announcement. Namely, none of its smartphones offer official 90Hz support, not accounting for the Galaxy S20’s secret 96Hz mode.

A report from earlier this month suggested one of the Galaxy S21 models will feature a 90Hz display. However, that one’s said to be produced by Chinese BOE, whereas the aforementioned SGS certification is specifically mentioned in regards to panels manufactured by Samsung Display. Meaning these top-in-class mobile displays may be the one intended for the upcoming Galaxy Note 20 family. As a reminder, the very same authority already attached its Eye Care certification to Samsung’s first-generation 120Hz modules earlier this year.

Best displays for best data speeds

In any case, two of the company’s modern mobile panels have now been found to feature unprecedented motion picture response times and blur length. The actual numbers can be found below, but in short, Samsung’s solutions were rated as best-positioned to take advantage of new telecom tech. With the implication being that pursuing refresh rates higher than 60Hz would have been a futile effort in the 4G LTE era.

Samsung Display EVP Baek Jee-ho related the achievement to the company’s continued pursuit of best-in-class mobile gaming and video experiences. The standardized testing procedures conducted by SGS were specifically aimed at reviewing display performance in conjunction with 5G-level data speeds.

Samsung brings the Aura Red Galaxy S20+ to another market, Malaysia

The Galaxy S20+ color palette is expanding in Malaysia, where the middle-of-the-road flagship variant is now available in Aura Red. This bright addition brings the total number of Galaxy S20+ colors up to four. Up until now, buyers in Malaysia could only pick between Cosmic Gray, Cloud Blue, and Cosmic Black.

Samsung is selling the LTE Galaxy S20+ model in Malaysia, and as of this writing, the phone costs RM 3,999 ($935) outright or RM 166.63 ($39) a month on a 2-year installment plan. The Aura Red Galaxy S20+ has the same price as all other color options that have been available in Malaysia since launch. Although not as exclusive as the latest Galaxy S20+ BTS Edition, Aura Red is still one of the rarer colors from the Galaxy S20 series’ palette.

The Galaxy S20+ is a relatively successful flagship considering the current economic climate and the slump in smartphone sales in general. Samsung shipped 3.5 million Galaxy S20+ units worldwide so far and the same device is leading the 5G segment, according to market researchers. The Galaxy S20+ has a 6.7-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, and it ships with an Exynos 990 SoC and 8GB of RAM in Malaysia. Check the links below for more details.

When will my Galaxy phone get a security update?

Software of any kind can have unintended vulnerabilities and flaws, and Android is no different. As the most widely used mobile operating system, Android is a major target for hackers looking for a way to exploit those vulnerabilities in order to access user data and cause other such inconveniences. To prevent major security exploits, Google fixes newly discovered vulnerabilities in Android by the way of monthly patches that are then released by various smartphone manufacturers for their smartphones through security updates.

Samsung makes the most number of Android smartphones, and it releases security updates for many of them on a monthly basis. In addition to fixing vulnerabilities in the core Android OS, these updates also fix vulnerabilities that affect Samsung’s custom version of Android that runs on all Galaxy smartphones and tablets. But releasing monthly updates to every device in its lineup is a near-impossible tasks, so Samsung releases new security updates for some devices on a quarterly basis (that is, once every three months).

Usually, it’s the flagship devices that receive monthly security updates and the mid-range and budget ones that get quarterly updates, but it’s not always that clear-cut. Some devices may get monthly updates for the first year or two after they hit the market and then be moved to the quarterly schedule, while some may be relegated to quarterly updates from day one. Some devices, especially those that went on sale more than three years ago, only get security updates when a critical vulnerability is discovered or an old vulnerability gets fixed.

When will my Galaxy phone or tablet get a security update?

How do you know how often your Galaxy phone or tablet is supposed to get security updates? Below is a list of all devices that Samsung currently offers monthly and quarterly updates for, and also those that get security updates only when necessary.

Devices on monthly security update schedule

  • Galaxy A10, Galaxy A10e, Galaxy A10s, Galaxy A20, Galaxy A20e, Galaxy A20s, Galaxy A30, Galaxy A30s, Galaxy A40, Galaxy A50s, Galaxy A51, Galaxy A60, Galaxy A70, Galaxy A70s, Galaxy A71, Galaxy A80, Galaxy A90 5G
  • Galaxy J2 (2018), Galaxy J2 Core, Galaxy J3 Top

  • Galaxy Tab S4, Galaxy Tab S5e, Galaxy Tab E 8 Refresh, Galaxy View 2

Devices getting security updates only when necessary

  • Galaxy A3 (2017), Galaxy A7 (2017), Galaxy A8+ (2018), Galaxy Note FE
  • Galaxy J3 (2017), Galaxy J3 Pop, Galaxy J5 (2017), Galaxy J5 Prime, Galaxy J7 (2016), Galaxy J7 (2017), Galaxy J7 Prime, Galaxy J7 Pop, Galaxy J7 Max, Galaxy J7 Neo
  • Galaxy Tab A 10.1 (2016), Galaxy Tab S2 L Refresh, Galaxy Tab S2 S Refresh, Galaxy Tab S3

Why doesn’t my Galaxy device always get security updates on schedule?

Unfortunately, even if Samsung says a device is scheduled to get monthly updates, it may not provide a monthly update for that device in every country or region. Samsung can update a device in some regions in, say, the month of April while making owners of the device in other countries wait until the next month (or the one after that) for the latest security update. Sometimes, a device may not get a new security update in any country according to the usual schedule. These delays are often a result of Samsung working on a major update that brings new features or a newer version of the Android OS.

Carriers also affect the schedule for some devices. For example, some carriers may choose to put a device on a quarterly schedule even if Samsung provides a monthly update for unlocked units. And even Samsung doesn’t follow the schedule in every country. In the UK, for example, not even flagships get monthly security updates at times. There are no guarantees, basically, and while Samsung releases security updates with impressive regularity, it’s always possible a Galaxy phone or tablet may miss out on some security patches from time to time.

How do I check if a security update is available?

A security update, like any update, will show up on your device on its own once Samsung releases it in your country. You can also check to see if there’s an update available yourself by opening the Settings app on your device, navigating to Software Update, then tapping the download option (this can be Download updates manually or Download and install depending on your OS version). On older devices, the Software update menu may be inside the About device section of the Settings app.

If an update is not available over the air right from your device, you can check for an update using Samsung’s Smart Switch software for Windows and Mac PCs. Another alternative is to download the most recent firmware for your device and country from our firmware database and upgrade manually using a Windows PC.

How long can I expect security updates for my Galaxy device?

As already mentioned earlier, it’s usually flagship devices that get monthly security updates while mid-range and budget offerings get them every three months. But how long will your Galaxy phone or tablet continue to get security updates? Well, you can expect your device to be on the same schedule for the first two years after it hits the market. In the third year, a device in the monthly schedule is downgraded to quarterly updates and those on a quarterly schedule start getting security updates only when necessary. Samsung has increased the support period for security updates for some devices to the fourth year, but whether this is something that will happen with more devices remains to be seen.

You don’t have to search for your phone’s (or tablet’s) release date to see just how often it will get security updates, though. You can bookmark this page instead and keep checking back to see what security update schedule your Galaxy device falls under. Also keep reading SamMobile for news on when a Galaxy device gets a new software update (security updates, feature updates, and major OS updates). And if you don’t mind getting a bit technical, you can visit Samsung’s dedicated website for Android security updates for details on the major vulnerabilities that are fixed in each month’s security update.

The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite note-taking tablet is coming soon to India

Samsung is gearing up for the release of the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite in India. Earlier today, the company’s official Twitter page informed its followers about the super carryable note-taking companion, the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite, coming soon. An exact release date for India has yet to be revealed, but the tablet is already available for purchase in various countries so it shouldn’t be long in coming to India either.

The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite has Wi-Fi-only and LTE flavors, but Samsung makes no mention of which of these variants will be launching in India first. Indian prices are also unknown as of this writing, however, judging by prices in other markets, the tablet should be launching for around INR 30,000 ($400) with a price difference of roughly $40-60 between the Wi-Fi and LTE models. Time will tell if Samsung India will offer any bonuses to early-adopter, like the Book Cover or the Keyboard Cover that’s being given away for free in Malaysia.

A quick recap of the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite ahead of India launch

The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is a mid-range tablet inspired by the full-fledged Galaxy Tab S6. It follows a similar design language, and as you would expect from a super carryable note-taking companion, it comes with its own S Pen.

The tablet sports a 10.4-inch TFT LCD with a resolution of 2000 x 1200 pixels and it’s powered by an Exynos 9611 chipset coupled with 4GB of RAM. The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite base model ships with 64GB of built-in storage and has a microSD slot that can read cards of up to 1TB. Dual stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support and a 7,040mAh battery are also par for the course.

Samsung heir Lee could end up being arrested once again

It seems there’s no end in sight for Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong’s legal troubles. Prosecutors in South Korea have now sought arrest warrants for the Samsung Group Vice Chairman and defacto heir as part of their investigation into alleged accounting fraud and a controversial merge between two Samsung units.

He has already done a stint in prison when he was arrested three years ago on charges brought up on bribery allegations. After spending almost a year in prison during which he filed an appeal against his prison sentence, Lee was let go as his five year sentence was reduced in half and suspended, which meant that he did not need to serve time behind bars.

2015 merger continues to haunt Samsung’s heir

While that matter continues to run its course, Lee Jae-yong’s latest troubles are linked to the 2015 merger between Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries. The merger was widely viewed as a way to make Lee the largest shareholder of Samsung C&T, which is basically a holding company for the entire Samsung Group, and also paved the way for his eventual succession as chairman of the empire.

The deal has remained controversial ever since. Ilsung Pharmaceutical, which had a 2.11 percent stake in Samsung C&T before the merger, had filed a case to have it nullified as Ilsung claimed the merger with Cheil Industries was “unfair” to shareholders. The Seoul Central Court ruled in 2017 that no illegality was found during the merger process which meant that no grounds existed to nullify it.

In addition to investigating this merger, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office has also been looking into allegations of accounting fraud at Samsung Biologistics. Lee was summoned for questioning at the office on May 26. South Korean prosecutors are now seeking an arrest warrant for Lee Jae-yong.

They seek Lee’s arrest on suspicions that include violations of audit rules and manipulation of the stock price. The Seoul Central District Court will review the request for warrants on June 8. Lee’s lawyers have expressed “deep regret” at the prosecution’s decision to seek warrants, pointing out in a statement that Lee has continued to provide his full cooperation with the investigation.

In a rare move, Lee Jae-yong apologized last month for Samsung’s failure to “comply with laws and ethics” and also promised to not pass on management control of Samsung to his children. A significant decision as after him, it would be the first time that a direct descendant of his grandfather Lee Byung-chul, who started Samsung in 1938, would not be in the driving seat.

Samsung Galaxy Buds+ BTS Edition will be sold separately

It was confirmed yesterday that Samsung is launching a special edition of the Galaxy S20+ in partnership with BTS, the biggest Kpop group on the planet. The Galaxy S20+ BTS Edition comes in a special Purple color and will be available for purchase starting July 9.

The Galaxy Buds+ BTS Edition will also be available for customers who would like to complete the whole package. However, Samsung has decided to sell these Galaxy Buds+ separately in order to increase its share in the competitive wireless earbud market.

Galaxy Buds+ BTS Edition have the same Purple color

Samsung is clearly trying to replicate the success that it saw with the Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne edition. It teamed up with the fashion designer to offer a customized finish on the foldable smartphone with matching Galaxy Buds+ and Galaxy Watch Active 2.

Given the sheer global reach of BTS, it goes without saying that the company is going to see an even bigger response for these new special edition devices. It was expected that the Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy Buds+ BTS Edition will both be offered as part of a single package but Samsung isn’t doing that.

The company will sell the Galaxy Buds+ BTS Edition separately instead. They have the same Purple color as the Galaxy S20+ along with the BTS logo on the case. This is actually a smart decision by the company. Not all BTS fans will be able to buy a Galaxy S20+ that costs more than $1,000 but a lot more of them will be able to buy earbuds that cost just over $100.

By leveraging the massive BTS following with this unique product Samsung will be able to increase its market share in the wireless earbuds market. The Galaxy Buds+ BTS Edition will also be available from July 9.

Galaxy Fold now getting June 2020 Android security update

The international variant of the Galaxy Fold (SM-F900F) is now receiving the June 2020 Android security update. Samsung began rolling out the new software on Wednesday, with the OTA package already being available for download throughout Europe.

As always, SamMobile’s firmware archive contains full images of the latest upgrade which is identified by build number F900FXXS3BTE1. However, if you still haven’t received the update notification, you should first check for the download manually by going to Settings > Software update > Download and install.

The June 2020 security patch is currently only out for the regular Galaxy Fold, while the Galaxy Fold 5G remains on the previous software level. This is par for the course for Samsung’s seminal foldable smartphone; the 5G-ready version of the device is usually a couple of weeks behind in the update schedule. Speaking of which, this firmware build appears to have underwent a pretty standard two-week testing process at Samsung, with its compilation date being May 22nd.

Galaxy Fold 5G still waiting for the June 2020 patch

Much like it’s ordinarily the case, it’s strongly advised your device is either charging or has plenty of battery life left prior to initializing the installation of the newest security upgrade. Likewise, having a stable Wi-Fi connection while doing so is ideal.

As the first-ever foldable handset from Samsung, the Galaxy Fold treaded a lot of new ground following its 2019 debut. While Samsung’s original take on this novel concept was met with a lukewarm response from critics, the company will soon be trying to improve on its foldable flagship with the Galaxy Fold 2. The second-generation device is widely expected to launch this summer, most likely in August.

Samsung decides to fund $31.8 million for 28 research projects

Samsung has announced that it plans to invest around KRW 38.85 billion (around $31.8 million) in 28 research projects. As a part of the Samsung Future Technology Development Project, the South Korean electronics giant will invest in 14 basic science projects, eight material science projects, and six projects in ICT (Information and Communications Technology).

The company has finalized the research projects in which it plans to invest in the first half of 2020. These projects include studies related to AI (Artificial Intelligence), brain tumor treatments, space science, and other fields. The South Korean firm established the Samsung Future Development Project foundation in 2013 to strengthen the development of basic sciences and future technologies.

Samsung has endowed over KRW 1.5 trillion for ten years to promising research projects through its foundation. It has invested over KRW 758 billion in 589 projects until now. These projects were chosen from universities and public research institutes in South Korea. Samsung has listed all the 28 projects that it chose for H1 2020 on its website.
