Samsung launches new Notebook 9 Pen with 15-inch display

Just a couple of days after it was reported that the Samsung Notebook 9 Pen is performing well, the company has launched its successor. The new Notebook 9 Pen announced today is also being offered in a 15-inch size in addition to the old 13-inch model.

The 15-inch size was previously only available for the regular Notebook 9. It will now be available for this convertible 2-in-1 model that ships with a built-in S Pen. As before, the body has an all-metal and aluminum frame for a stylish and durable shell.

New Notebook 9 Pen also comes in a 15-inch size

It comes with the latest 8th Gen Intel Core i7 processor with 16GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 512GB SSD. The 15-inch model also gets an NVIDIA GeForce MX150 graphics chip. Both feature 802.11ac Wi-Fi, AKG stereo speakers with ThunderAmp, HD IR Camera, facial and fingerprint recognition.

ThunderAmp is Samsung’s new smart amplifier technology. It lets users smoothly increase the volume to the maximum for each of the built-in stereo speakers. There’s also a backlit keyboard, two Thunderbolt 3 ports and one USB-C port and a 54Wh battery. The battery has fast-charging capability and is said to last for up to 15 hours.

The S Pen is a big selling point for this laptop and Samsung has made some improvements on this front as well. It says that latency has been reduced by 2x compared to the previous model. It’s event offering multiple user replaceable tips for the S Pen. The stylus gets stored directly into the notebook and doesn’t need to be charged. It’s got a new paint job as well which matches the blue and gold S Pen introduced with the Galaxy Note 9.

The new Notebook 9 Pen is going to be available in South Korea from tomorrow. It will be released in the United States, Brazil, China and Hong Kong by early next year.

Samsung decides to shut down the Tianjin phone plant in China

Samsung’s smartphone business has been facing an existential crisis in China with the company’s market share falling below 1% in recent quarters. Though the company has vowed to fight back on numerous occasions and undertook many measures, it has failed to make any perceptible gains so far in the world’s largest smartphone market.

This decimation was bound to have consequences on Samsung’s phone manufacturing operations in the region. There were reports a few months back that the Korean giant is contemplating closing down the Tianjin plant in China due to rising labor costs and lackluster sales. In line with the reports, Samsung announced yesterday that it would shut down the Tianjin phone plant by the end of this year.

“As part of ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency in our production facilities, Samsung Electronics has arrived at the difficult decision to cease operations of Tianjin Samsung Electronics Telecommunication,” Samsung said in a statement.

Will continue to operate the second plant

The company said it would offer compensation packages and transfer opportunities to the ~2,600 employees affected by this move. It also confirmed that its other phone manufacturing plant in Huizhou in Guangdong province would remain operational.

Though Samsung has not disclosed the production capacity of these plants, media reports from Korea place it at 36 million phones per year for the Tianjin plant and 72 million units for Huizhou plant.

Samsung has moved much of its smartphone manufacturing to countries like India and Vietnam in recent years. To avoid the rising import costs and stay competitive in the price-sensitive Indian market (where the company is still a dominant player), it opened the world’s largest mobile factory there in July this year.

[Poll] How often do you take Live Focus pictures on your Galaxy phone?

Samsung was a bit late to the party in putting dual cameras on its flagships, but it didn’t take away the fact that the dual camera setups on the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note smartphones are extremely useful. The second lens at the back makes it possible to shoot close-up pictures of a subject and take Live Focus pictures in which everything behind the subject is out of focus (called bokeh in photography terminology).

The zoom function (yes, it’s not true optical zoom, but you do get closer to what you’re trying to capture without having to physically move towards it) is more useful (and underappreciated) in our eyes. Most of us here at SamMobile rarely use their flagship Galaxy S or Note for Live Focus pictures. And that’s what brings us to today’s poll: We want to know how often you, our readers, use Live Focus.

So, without further ado, go ahead and vote in the poll below, then take to the comments section to give us more of your thoughts on the matter.

New report claims to reveal Galaxy S10 release date and price

A new report out of the UK claims to reveal the Galaxy S10 release date and price. It also includes some information about the storage sizes. The report does reiterate a lot of what we have already heard about the Galaxy S10.

The stuff that has been reiterated includes the three separate models and an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor. The ability to charge another device wirelessly with its own battery is mentioned as well.

Galaxy S10 release date and price information comes from a UK retailer

Gizmodo UK claims to have received this information from a source at a “major tech retailer.” As we also mentioned earlier today, the Galaxy S10 is now expected to be unveiled at a special Samsung Unpacked event before MWC 2019 in February.

Samsung will reportedly start taking Galaxy S10 pre-orders after the event on February 20. March 8, 2019, is when it may be released. The source says that three variants of the Galaxy S10 will be on offer with all three featuring the Infinity-O display. The 5.8-inch entry-level model will have a flat display. The Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ will feature 6.1-inch and 6.4-inch curved displays. That’s something we have seen represented in recent leaks as well.

The source also mentions that an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor will be onboard as well. Qualcomm has already unveiled the sensor that Samsung might source for the Galaxy S10. The iris scanner is out.

The 5.8-inch Galaxy S10 will reportedly come with 128GB of storage for £669 ($850) in the UK. Samsung is said to offer the 6.1-inch Galaxy S10 with 128GB and 512GB storage for £799 ($1,000) and £999 ($1,250) respectively.

Customers will be able to get the Galaxy S10+ with 128GB, 512GB and apparently 1TB of internal storage for £899 ($1,130), £1,099 ($1,390) and a whopping £1,399 ($1,760) respectively. However, it’s unclear if the 1TB variant is the 5G Galaxy S10 that’s also expected to feature a total of six cameras. The source claims that the 5G variant will arrive by “late Q2 at the earliest.”

Do take this with a grain of salt as it’s entirely possible that none of this is set in stone yet. The Galaxy S10 is shaping up to be quite an expensive proposition if this report is anything to go by. Would you be willing to spend this much money on one?

Samsung’s 5G business could benefit from Huawei’s troubles

Samsung is the world’s biggest smartphone and semiconductor maker, but it’s not the same when it comes to networking. Huawei is the leader in this market segment. Samsung is, in fact, placed fifth, behind Huawei, ZTE, Ericsson, and Nokia in terms of 4G network equipment market share.

The company wants to improve in this standing with 5G and has already announced the plans to invest $22 billion in 5G and other next-gen technologies. And the growing security concerns surrounding Huawei may also come to Samsung’s aide.

Trouble for Huawei spells opportunity for Samsung

Huawei’s market position is under threat amid concerns that its products may allow the Chinese government to carry out espionage activities, a charge that Huawei vehemently denies. A number of countries are blocking Huawei products nonetheless. This may help Samsung challenge the Chinese behemoth in the 5G market.

“Strategically these concerns help us grab more market share,” said S. Abraham Kim, a vice president at Samsung’s mobile division, speaking at a conference in Seoul. Samsung is already ahead on 5G smartphone technology and would be looking to build on that. “Huawei has held dominance in the network market since the fourth-generation LTE era, but we’re ahead on 5G technology that goes into smartphones,” Kim said. However, there still remain technical challenges for the company.

5G signals could get disrupted depending on how the phone is held. Mitigating that would require cramming more antenna modules inside the already limited space of a smartphone alongside a large battery. Kim said that Samsung is studying how a device’s internals can be split into two layers while keeping overall thickness to a minimum.

Heat dissipation is another challenge with the 5G devices. The 5G technology transmits a lot of data and also consumes more power, potentially increasing the phone’s temperature. Kim says the company is working on to cap the temperature at just over 40 degrees Celsius.

Samsung is planning to launch a 5G-capable Galaxy S10 early next year. The company has high hopes on the S10 range, along with the foldable phone, to revive its declining smartphone sales.

Exclusive: Galaxy S10 accessories will include the usual suspects

Samsung will be offering a variety of Galaxy S10 accessories when the handset arrives next year. We can confirm that the usual suspects it releases for every Samsung flagship will be offered for the Galaxy S10 as well. The list includes accessories such as the Silicone, S-View Flip and LED Wallet covers.

The company may decide to offer additional accessories when the handset is launched. Perhaps we might see new wireless chargers or new styles of protective covers. This list isn’t exhaustive but it does confirm that some of Samsung’s much-loved accessories will be returning for its next flagship.

Galaxy S10 accessories include some of Samsung’s best cases

Samsung will offer the S-View Flip Cover, Rugged Protective Stand and Silicone Cover for all three variants of the Galaxy S10. The Leather Cover may only be available for the Galaxy S10+. There will also be an LED Wallet cover for the flagship.

Colors for the S-View Flip Cover include black, white and yellow. The Silicone Cover will be available in white, blue, black and navy. Samsung is going to offer the Leather Cover in black and navy colors for the Galaxy S10+.

The Rugged Protective Cover is already available for the Galaxy Note 9. Its drop tested to military standards to minimize damage impact on the device. The Galaxy S10 lineup will get it as well in silver, black, white and blue colors. Last but not the least, the LED Wallet Cover will come in white, black and green colors.

This list isn’t complete as yet so there may be other colors for the cases mentioned above. There may also be other cases. The new Hyperknit cover it introduced with the Galaxy S9 isn’t on the list as yet but it could get a spot too. The list also provides a general idea of the colors that may be offered for the Galaxy S10.

We have exclusively reported that the Galaxy S10 will be available in black, white, yellow and green colors. Samsung hasn’t said anything about new colors at this point in time, though. It may very well not until February next year. The Galaxy S10 is expected to be unveiled at MWC 2019 but there have been whispers that Samsung might host its own event for the flagship a bit earlier.

Android Pie brings a nifty alternative to the screen auto rotate toggle

Samsung is making plenty of additions to Google’s version of Android Pie, many of which we have already written about in our One UI (Android Pie) feature focus series. But there’s one particular feature of stock Android Pie that we felt deserves to be highlighted. On Pie, you have a small button in the navigation bar that lets you switch between portrait and landscape screen orientation without needing to touch the auto rotate toggle in the notification bar.

A more convenient method to change screen orientation

How does it work? Say you’re using the phone in portrait mode, which is usually how people hold their phone for regular usage. Traditionally, in order to rotate the screen to landscape, you would have to keep the auto rotate toggle in the quick toggles enabled. On Pie, that’s no longer needed. Every time you tilt the phone sideways, a small button will pop up at the right side of the navigation bar. You can tap this button to switch to landscape orientation. When you’re using the phone in landscape orientation and turn it upright, the button will show up once again so you can switch back to portrait.

The gist here is that you no longer need to use keep auto rotate enabled to be able to switch between landscape and portrait orientation (and vice versa). It’s especially useful for those who don’t like how having auto rotate enabled can sometimes change screen orientation even when you don’t want it to. The navigation bar switch works much better, and it comes standard on Android Pie.

Samsung China re-evaluating its collaboration with off-brand Supreme

Samsung China has taken a lot of flak for announcing a collaboration with an off-brand Supreme at the Galaxy A8s launch event this week. It’s not the “real” Supreme, the extremely popular one based in New York. Samsung actually collaborated with Supreme Italia. It had used a bit of intellectual property law trickery to register the same brand and logo in Italy. Supreme Italia actually defeated Supreme NYC in court this summer over the rights to use the brand in the country.

Supreme NYC was also quick to denounce this Samsung x Supreme collaboration. The company clarified that it wasn’t opening a store in Beijing or working with Samsung for that matter. It referred to these claims as “blatantly false and propagated by a counterfeit organization.” Samsung China has paid heed to the bad press and has said that it’s re-evaluating the collaboration with Supreme Italia.

Samsung China backtracks on collab with Supreme Italia

Samsung China’s digital marketing manager Leo Lau initially defended this collaboration. He mentioned that Samsung was working with Supreme Italia in China. That’s because Samsung NYC doesn’t have the required authorization to sell its products in the country. Supreme Italia is planning to launch retail stores in China and this collaboration with Samsung was meant to generate hype. Above all, the two companies didn’t reveal at the event what products they would be collaborating on.

The criticism from hypebeasts everywhere, particularly in China, seems to have made Samsung reconsider. Therefore, the company has confirmed through its official Weibo account that it is re-evaluating this cooperation.

“Recently, Samsung Electronics announced at the launch of the Galaxy A8s that it will cooperate with Supreme Italia in the Chinese market. We are currently re-evaluating this cooperation, and we deeply regret the inconvenience caused,” it said.

It remains to be seen whether Samsung will be pulling the plug on this collab. Even if it does that, it may not find a willing partner in Supreme NYC if it ever wants to work with it outside China.

Does the latest Android Pie beta hint at the Galaxy S10’s ultra-wide camera?

The new Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie beta makes some changes to the camera app’s user interface. And it looks like there is also a new feature in there that hints at the Galaxy S10 having an ultra-wide camera. Many rumors and leaks have already talked about the Galaxy S10’s camera setup including an ultra-wide lens, but it’s still nice to get a hint through Samsung’s software.

This new feature is called Ultra wide lens correction. Wide-angle camera lenses have a tendency to distort the image at the corners, with objects at the edges of wide-angle pictures looking curved. A solution for this is to crop the sides of the image a bit so it looks like a regular picture without distortion, and the Galaxy A9 (2018) already offers such an option for ultra-wide images in the gallery.

Here’s a comparison of a regular ultra-wide image taken on the Galaxy A9 (2018) and the same image corrected for distortion (slide left for the corrected picture):

← SLIDE →

With Android Pie, Samsung just seems to be making this a toggle switch in the camera settings so that every ultra-wide image is saved without distortion. In fact, with the company having started work on the Galaxy A7 (2018) Android Pie update, this lens correction feature may just be for the A7 (2018) and A9 (2018) at this point, because it sure doesn’t help on the Galaxy S9 or Note 9 and the Galaxy S10 is still a few months away from release.

Using the Android Pie beta on your Galaxy S9 or Note 9? You can find the Ultra wide lens correction option in the Save options section of the camera settings. Do let us know if you see other new features or changes in the latest beta. And do check out our coverage of all the features that Android Pie will bring to Galaxy smartphones.
