Galaxy S21 Android 12 One UI 4.0 beta program now live in India

What we had suspected has come to pass: Samsung has started to expand availability of the Galaxy S21 Android 12 One UI 4.0 beta program to more countries following the release of the second beta build for the initial batch of markets. The beta program has now gone live in India.

Indian Galaxy S21, S21+, and S21 Ultra owners can open the Samsung Members app on their phone to enroll in the beta program by clicking the beta notice in the app’s notices section. Once they’ve enrolled, they can install the Android 12 beta by downloading it from the phone’s Settings » Software update menu.

Indian users will get the second One UI 4.0 beta build that rolled out elsewhere just yesterday (firmware version ending with ZUJ1), which means they get to try out the new Material You color theming feature. Naturally, all the other One UI 4.0 stuff is in there, too, which you can learn about in the video below.

Remember to backup your phone’s data before you install the One UI 4.0 beta, and keep in mind that switching back to Android 11 and One UI 3.1 from the beta will require a complete device reset.

Galaxy A70 picks up the September 2021 security update

It has been more than a week since Samsung started rolling out the October 2021 security update, but the Galaxy A70 is only now getting access to last month’s security patch. The update is currently rolling out in Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, but it could reach more countries over the next few days.

The Galaxy A70 has started getting a new software update with firmware version A705FXXU5DUI3. Apart from usual bug fixes and stability improvements, the update brings the September 2021 security patch that fixes more than 40 privacy and security-related vulnerabilities. The mid-range smartphone is currently listed under Samsung’s quarterly software update schedule.

If you are a Galaxy A70 user in any of the countries mentioned above, you might have already received a notification of the new update. If you haven’t received it yet, you can check for it manually by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. You can also download the new firmware file from our firmware database and flash it manually.

Samsung had launched the Galaxy A70 in mid-2019 with Android 9 Pie-based One UI. The phone received the Android 10 update last year and the Android 11-based One UI 3.1 update a few months ago.

Making mobile gaming less terrible: Is it time for Samsung Arcade?

Samsung’s content bets have grown pretty substantially in recent years. From filmmaking classes and BTS music videos to big-budget ads for fairly abstract fields like big data, it’s clear the Korean company understands the value of high-quality content. Following that train of thought, there’s still one content genre it hasn’t quite nailed down just yet – video games. Or mobile games, to be more specific.

Right now, Samung’s efforts in the mobile gaming arena are mostly concentrated on niche eSports sponsorships and the occasional Galaxy Store promotion. Meanwhile, over on the other end of the world, Apple’s been topping global gaming revenues. Without making a single game, mind you.

Based on the numbers released during the recent Apple-Epic trial over microtransactions, Apple generated roughly $8.5 billion in gaming revenues for 2019 alone. That’s more than what Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, and Activision Blizzard pulled that year combined, TWSJ estimates. By this metric, Samsung’s mobile rival is the world’s largest gaming company – despite never making a single game.

What content play makes more sense than Samsung Arcade?

It goes without saying that Samsung doesn’t have the advantage of an exclusive app ecosystem to leverage. But it certainly doesn’t need one to kickstart an Arcade-like service. In many ways, the various Galaxy Store promotions offering exclusive digital goodies like Fortnite skins and discounts prove the company already has enough business relationships to rely on for populating such a hypothetical service with content. Because at the end of the day, content is what this is all about.

As things stand right now, the Galaxy Store is most useful to Samsung as extra leverage in large-scale dealings with Google. It’s the threat of it ever becoming anything substantial that keeps Mountain View on its toes. At least compared to its everyday contents. Back in early summer, we heard of Google’s supposed attempts at illegally gutting the Galaxy Store. That’s not the sort of move you risk if you aren’t at least a little bit worried about the alternatives.

From Samsung’s perspective, doubling down on content is starting to seem like the only smart play in the near-term. Global device sales are slowing down. Chip shortages are weighing down its existing production capacity. Chinese brands are doing the same to its profit margins. If there ever was a time for a historic content push, that time is now. Content, after all, is one thing that can’t easily be copied and regurgitated overnight. It’s also an alternative, unique avenue for strengthening brand loyalty.

And content is perhaps the last arena in which Samsung still isn’t fulfilling its potential. Not if you look at the massive gap between the quality of its marketing and on-demand services such as streaming and gaming. Is launching a platform like Samsung Arcade the only play here? No, but it definitely seems like the most obvious move, given the state of the mobile industry, on the whole. Or rather, given the fact how mobile gaming is still pretty terrible for the level of technology that powers it.

Samsung 980 PRO enables next-gen gaming performance in Windows 11

The Windows 11 operating system from Microsoft debuted earlier today, and one of the new technologies it brings is DirectStorage. It’s a new set of storage APIs designed to boost performance, especially when running large and visually demanding video games. DirectStorage requires an NVMe SSD to work, and of course, Samsung is taking this opportunity to promote its powerful 980 PRO SSD.

The 980 PRO SSD is one of the fastest NVMe PCIe 4.0 storage solutions on the market, and it’s without a doubt one of the best SSDs overall. It can top 7,000MB/s read speeds, which means it’s 2x faster than PICe 3.0 solution and a whopping 12.7x faster than SATA SSDs.

With these specs in mind, the Samsung 980 PRO is not only a great choice for the Sony PS5 (PlayStation 5) but for PC owners who want to utilize DirectStorage technology in Windows 11.

What is DirectStorage, and why should you care?

DirectStorage technology was first used by Microsoft in the new Xbox Series S/X consoles, and thanks to its success, it’s now becoming available for PC users through Windows 11. Eventually, it will be added to Windows 10, though it will have some limitations.

As to how it works, in short, DirectStorage leverages the NVMe SSD’s fast transfer rates to speed up processing by eliminating the need for the CPU to decompress data before sending it to the system memory and the GPU VRAM.

With DirectStorage, compressed data can be sent by an optimized app/game to the system memory, which then sends it to the GPU memory for decompression, thus eliminating the need for the CPU to do decompression work and slow the system down as a result.

Evidently, in order for DirectStorage to be effective, Windows 11 requires a fast NVMe SSD. Samsung recommends the 980 PRO, and we do too. If you’re planning on building a new PC for Windows 11 with DirectStorage capabilities for next-gen gaming, the Samsung 980 PRO is one of the best storage options you have. And thankfully, Samsung is selling the 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB variants at discounts of up to $290 — at least in the USA.

Galaxy Z Fold Note concept explores unusual hybrid design with S Pen

A new Galaxy Z Fold concept emerged recently from the realm of ambitious designs that might never become a reality. It has a foldable external display that wraps around the hinge and a dedicated S Pen slot. It looks nothing like the ongoing Galaxy Z Fold 3 or the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, but it tries to combine both worlds in an unusual manner.

The design was created by Technizo Concept from a handful of sketches discovered by LetsGoDigital in a patent application forwarded by Samsung. By the looks of it, the so-called Galaxy Z Fold Note uses a single foldable exterior display instead of a dual-display configuration.

One of the most impractical Galaxy Z Fold concept designs yet

This leads to some unusual design cues, such as the rear display, which is extremely narrow even compared to the Z Fold 3’s cover display. It looks more like an afterthought, but it does contribute to a larger, tablet-like display when unfolded.

This S Pen slot is not easily accessible, or more specifically, it’s not accessible at all when the Galaxy Z Fold Note is folded shut. It’s sandwiched between the two sides of the phone and can only be removed after unfolding the device. In essence, this implies that the S Pen is meant primarily for unfolded use cases and that the S Pen user experience was not fully optimized for the folded form factor.

Thankfully, this design is based on a patent application that was filed last year, and as with many other patents, this one might not reflect Samsung’s actual plans for the foldable market at all. It might be just a rough concept Samsung was exploring at one point, or who knows?! It could be the next-gen Galaxy Z Fold-Note hybrid not many people are waiting for. We wouldn’t hold our breath for the latter.

What are your thoughts on this concept? Should Samsung explore this type of foldable design further? Comment below.

Samsung can find out if you’ve thrown your Galaxy Z Flip 3 around

Samsung appears to have taken extra precautions against false warranty claims for the Galaxy Z Flip 3, as it turns out that the new clamshell flagship phone is logging all acceleration-based free-fall events. Samsung engineers can refer to these logs when a customer wants to make a warranty claim to determine if the damage should or shouldn’t be covered by the warranty.

Using these logs that record free falls based on accelerometer data, Samsung engineers can determine if a Galaxy Z Flip 3 that was brought in for repairs got dropped from distances higher than 1 meter. If it was, Samsung can refuse to provide free repairs even if the phone is under warranty.

Be kind to your Galaxy Z Flip 3 if you value your warranty

There already are a few stories from Galaxy Z Flip 3 users (via @FrontTron) who were either granted or denied free repairs under warranty. One Galaxy Z Flip 3 user reports that Samsung was willing to repair the phone under warranty even after engineers determined that the device in question was dropped three times, with the last drop taking place 10 hours before the screen broke. However, the company was a little bit more lenient because the warranty claim was issued not 14 days after the purchase. Said user got lucky, but not everyone might.

In conclusion, if you own a Galaxy Z Flip 3, don’t make a habit out of throwing your phone on the couch or mishandling it. The accelerometer data will be logged, and you could face difficulties later down the line when you might need to make a warranty claim at a Samsung service center.

It’s unclear of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 logs accelerometer data the same way, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it did. We’ll keep you posted if we find out more.

When will my Galaxy phone get a security update?

Software of any kind can have unintended vulnerabilities and flaws, and Android is no different. As the most widely used mobile operating system, Android is a major target for hackers looking for a way to exploit those vulnerabilities in order to access user data and cause other such inconveniences. To prevent major security exploits, Google fixes newly discovered vulnerabilities in Android by the way of monthly patches that are then released by various smartphone manufacturers for their smartphones through security updates.

Samsung makes the most number of Android smartphones, and it releases security updates for many of them on a monthly basis. In addition to fixing vulnerabilities in the core Android OS, these updates also fix vulnerabilities that affect Samsung’s custom version of Android that runs on all Galaxy smartphones and tablets. But releasing monthly updates to every device in its lineup is a near-impossible task, so Samsung releases new security updates for some devices on a quarterly basis (that is, once every three months).

Usually, it’s the flagship devices that receive monthly security updates and the mid-range and budget ones that get quarterly updates, but it’s not always that clear-cut. Some devices may get monthly updates for the first year or two after they hit the market and then be moved to the quarterly schedule, while some may be relegated to quarterly updates from day one.

Some devices, especially those that went on sale more than three years ago, only get bi-annual updates. In some cases, Samsung may send security updates when a critical vulnerability is discovered or an old vulnerability gets fixed for any device.

When will my Galaxy phone or tablet get a security update?

Why doesn’t my Galaxy device always get security updates on schedule?

Unfortunately, even if Samsung says a device is scheduled to get monthly updates, it may not provide a monthly update for that device in every country or region. Samsung can update a device in some regions in, say, the month of April while making owners of the device in other countries wait until the next month (or the one after that) for the latest security update. Sometimes, a device may not get a new security update in any country according to the usual schedule. These delays are often a result of Samsung working on a major update that brings new features or a newer version of the Android OS.

Carriers also affect the schedule for some devices. For example, some carriers may choose to put a device on a quarterly schedule even if Samsung provides a monthly update for unlocked units. And even Samsung doesn’t follow the schedule in every country. In the UK, for example, not even flagships get monthly security updates at times. There are no guarantees, basically, and while Samsung releases security updates with impressive regularity, it’s always possible a Galaxy phone or tablet may miss out on some security patches from time to time.

How do I check if a security update is available?

A security update, like any update, will show up on your device on its own once Samsung releases it in your country. You can also check to see if there’s an update available yourself by opening the Settings app on your device, navigating to Software Update, then tapping the download option (this can be Download updates manually or Download and install depending on your OS version). On older devices, the Software update menu may be inside the About device section of the Settings app.

If an update is not available over the air right from your device, you can check for an update using Samsung’s Smart Switch software for Windows and Mac PCs. Another alternative is to download the most recent firmware for your device and country from our firmware database and upgrade manually using a Windows PC.

How long can I expect security updates for my Galaxy device?

As already mentioned earlier, it’s usually flagship devices that get monthly security updates while mid-range and budget offerings get them every three months. But how long will your Galaxy phone or tablet continue to get security updates? Well, you can expect your device to be on the same schedule for the first two years after it hits the market. In the third year, a device in the monthly schedule is downgraded to quarterly updates and those on a quarterly schedule start getting security updates only when necessary. Samsung has increased the support period for security updates for some devices to the fourth year, but whether this is something that will happen with more devices remains to be seen.

You don’t have to search for your phone’s (or tablet’s) release date to see just how often it will get security updates, though. You can bookmark this page instead and keep checking back to see what security update schedule your Galaxy device falls under. Also keep reading SamMobile for news on when a Galaxy device gets a new software update (security updates, feature updates, and major OS updates). And if you don’t mind getting a bit technical, you can visit Samsung’s dedicated website for Android security updates for details on the major vulnerabilities that are fixed in each month’s security update.

Samsung brings Material You color themes with One UI 4.0 beta 2

Material You is the new design language that Google has introduced with Android 12. The company behind Android describes it as a completely new way of thinking about design. It takes a hyper-personalized approach to customization.

Samsung today released the One UI 4.0 beta 2. The latest iteration of its Android 12-based firmware now brings Material You color themes to supported devices. It’s great to see that one of the biggest Android 12 features has found its way to Samsung devices.

Material You unlocks a new world of customization

The idea behind Material You is to enable users to create designs that are personal to them. Users effectively become co-creators. They can use any wallpaper to create unique Material color palettes that are applied system-wide as well as to native and third-party apps.

This feature was missing from the first One UI 4.0 beta but we’ve just found it on the One UI 4.0 beta 2. It lets you choose a theme based on the colors of your wallpaper. As you’d expect, there are still a few bugs in this feature.

Sometimes, the personalized theme is applied right after it’s selected. On more than one occasion, we had to reboot the device in order for the changes to take effect. It’s nothing to worry about. These bugs will be worked out in later versions.

Samsung has only just started rolling out the second beta firmware. It’s going to be available to all users participating in the beta program soon.

YouTube Music now allows background playback for free on your Galaxy smartphone

Google has announced that it will soon enable background music playback on YouTube Music for free. It means that you can now enjoy YouTube Music on your Galaxy smartphone or tablet even if you are not a premium user of the music streaming service. Earlier, this feature was limited to YouTube Premium subscribers.

This new feature will be enabled on November 3, 2021, but it will be limited to Canadian users for now. Users in other countries would have to wait to get this feature. Users can continue using YouTube Music like any other music streaming service such as Apple Music or Spotify, and music playback will continue even when the app is minimized. However, since the free tier is ad-supported, users will hear some ads between songs.

YouTube Music has a huge collection of music tracks from various artists and genres. Users can also access radio stations, create playlists, and subscribe to existing playlists. They can also upload music and listen to it anytime. YouTube Music is also available for the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic.

Which music streaming service do you use on your Samsung smartphone or tablet? Lets us know in the comments section below.

Samsung boss remains the richest stockholder in South Korea

It’s quite lucrative to be running one of the top conglomerates in the world. As you’d probably expect, Samsung boss Lee Jae-yong has a significant net worth. Most of it is linked to his Samsung holdings.

He remains the richest individual stockholder in South Korea. Lee Jae-yong’s stockholdings are the largest among South Korean conglomerate owners. That’s impressive, considering that the country has quite a few highly successful conglomerates.

Nobody can match the value of Lee Jae-yong’s shareholdings

Lee Jae-yong also happens to be the richest person in South Korea. He inherited the title from his father Lee Kun-hee who passed away last year.

Lee Jae-yong’s net worth increased substantially after he inherited his father’s shares in the many companies under the Samsung Group. The shares that he inherited in companies like Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDS were worth more than $5 billion at that time.

Even though the value of his total shareholders has declined a bit, the Samsung boss remains South Korea’s richest individual stockholder. His shareholdings were valued at $11.9 billion at the end of September 2021. The value of his holdings is down approximately $1 billion from three months earlier but that still wasn’t enough to knock him off the top.

Lee Jae-yong’s net worth would have been even higher if South Korea didn’t impose a large inheritance tax. The Lee family will pay the largest-ever inheritance tax of $10.8 billion to the government in order to inherit Lee Kun-hee’s estate.

Samsung Display outshines competition in global smartphone panel sales

Samsung Display doesn’t have much in the way of competition in the global smartphone market. Hence, it doesn’t come as a surprise that it reigned supreme over everyone else in terms of market share; although it is marginally lower than last year. The global smartphone display market was worth $21 billion in H1, 2021, almost 13% higher than last year’s figure of $18.6 billion.

A survey conducted by market research firm Strategy Analytics tells us that Samsung Display captured 48% of the smartphone display market. While that figure doesn’t look like much, the runner-up — China-based BoE Electronics — had a paltry 13% share followed by Tianma Microelectronics Co. at 8%. Interestingly enough, Samsung’s arch-rival LG is nowhere to be seen on the list. LG’s POLED panels were lambasted for sub-par performance on Google Pixel devices, and we’ve seen fewer of those ever since.

It is unlikely that Samsung Display will lose out its top position to any of its competitions anytime soon. Most high-end smartphonestablets, and even laptops sold in the market use Samsung panels for their impeccable colour accuracy and brightness. Besides, Samsung Display is pretty much the only company you can go to if you want a foldable screen.

That being said, OLED panels are becoming increasingly commonplace in mid-range and even some low-cost smartphones. BOE is usually the go-to supplier here and it could witness a rise in orders in the coming years due to the newly emerging trend.
