Galaxy M51 could feature 6.65-inch AMOLED screen, Snapdragon 730, 7,000mAh battery

Samsung isn’t done with the Galaxy M series just yet. After launching the Galaxy M01, Galaxy M01 Core, Galaxy M01s, Galaxy M11, Galaxy M21, Galaxy M31, and the Galaxy M31s this year, the company is expected to launch one more Galaxy M series smartphone: Galaxy M51. The phone could debut in India and Russia next month.

We had exclusively reported three months ago that the Galaxy M51 will feature 128GB internal storage. Later, its camera and battery specs were revealed. Now, Samsung has made support pages of the Galaxy M51 live on its website, confirming the phone’s impending launch. It has also been revealed that the smartphone will feature a 6.65-inch AMOLED screen with Full HD+ resolution from CSOT.

The upcoming mid-range smartphone will likely be powered by a 7,000mAh battery with support for 25W fast charging technology. If this turns out to be true, the Galaxy M51 could be among the longest-lasting phones of the year. Earlier leaks have pointed towards a Snapdragon 730 processor and 8GB RAM inside the smartphone running Android 10.

We had exclusively reported last month that the Galaxy M51 will feature a quad-camera setup with a 64MP wide-angle camera and a 12MP ultrawide camera. There’s no clear indication regarding the remaining two cameras, but one of them could be a depth sensor and the other could be a dedicated macro camera.

Samsung’s TV business did really well in H1 2020 even as global TV market struggled

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected a lot of businesses worldwide, including high-priced consumer electronics. However, Samsung’s TV business seems to be doing really well, at least according to a new report from market analysis firm Omdia. The South Korean tech giant sold more TVs than last year despite reduced demand in the global market.

According to the latest report, Samsung accounted for 31.3% of the global TV market in terms of value during the first half of 2020, up 1.3% from H1 2019. In terms of shipment volume, Samsung TVs accounted for 20.7% share of the global market, selling 19.07 million units during the period. In comparison, the company had managed to sell 19.02 million TVs during the first half of last year.

The South Korean tech giant’s QLED TVs showed a strong performance as their sales reached 1.4 million units, jumping 28% year-on-year during the previous quarter. Samsung’s share of 75-inch or larger-sized TVs was 65.5% in North America and 54% in Europe. TV sales are expected to improve in the second half of the year due to promotions during the holiday season.

In the first half of 2020, 91.87 million TVs were sold throughout the world, down 7.7% from last year as consumers spent cautiously due to economic uncertainties. LG’s market share in the global TV market was 11.7% during H1 2020, up 1% from last year. The company managed to ship 10.79 million TVs, and its value share was 17% during the same period.

Samsung was second-biggest tablet brand in India during Q2 2020

Samsung is among the few OEMs that still take the tablet segment seriously. Every year, the company launches multiple tablets, ranging from extremely affordable to high-end price segment. This year, the company launched the Galaxy Tab S7 series, taking its high-end tablet offering a notch higher.

According to a new report from market analysis firm CyberMedia Research, Samsung was the second-biggest tablet brand in India during Q2 2020 in terms of shipments. The report shows that the South Korean tech giant improved its tablet business in the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the increased demand for tablet PCs for learning from home.

Samsung’s tablet market share in India was 29% during the second quarter of 2020, up from 17% a year ago. The affordable Galaxy Tab A 10.1 tablet did well in the country, accounting for 25% sales from the South Korean brand. Lenovo accounted for 48% of the Indian tablet market during the same period, up from 32% a year earlier. Apple, on the other hand, came in third with a 12% share of the market, down from 14% in Q2 2019.

CMR’s new report showed that the Indian tablet market grew 23% quarter-on-quarter, thanks to the rising trend of remote learning and work from home. Tablets with Wi-Fi connectivity saw huge growth with a 98% increase in demand. The demand for tablets is expected to rise further in India as the pandemic continues. A growth of 15% to 25% is being expected.

New Galaxy S21 Ultra rumor hints at Bright HM2 108-megapixel camera

The Galaxy Note 20 series hasn’t even shipped to early customers yet but that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from grinding away bits of information that will be proven true or false six months from now. In other words, rumors about the Galaxy S21 series have been popping up since before Galaxy Unpacked 2020, so the arrival of the Galaxy Note 20 series won’t change the flow of information regarding the next flagship series.

Case in point, a new rumor passed along on Twitter claims that the Galaxy S21 Ultra will be equipped with a new camera that will be based on the sequel to the Bright HM1 sensor. It will reportedly retain the 108MP resolution but it’s unclear whether or not it will be called the ISOCELL Bright HM2. And yes, if you need to catch up, Samsung is expected to release three Galaxy S21 variants early next year and they’ll likely be called the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra.

In other recent news, the Galaxy S21 series might abandon the ToF camera, meaning that the Galaxy S21 Ultra could make up for it by using a laser autofocus module. In other words, it’s business as usual and we can expect the Galaxy S21 series to gain some inspiration from the Galaxy Note 20 lineup.

Samsung maintains DRAM lead in Q2 but Q3 might not be as profitable

Samsung’s share in the global DRAM market saw a slight quarter-on-quarter decline in Q2 2020, but the company’s revenues did rebound, shows a recent report by market research firm TrendForce via Yonhap. Although Samsung’s global DRAM market share declined by 0.6% to 43.5% in the April-June period compared to the previous quarter, its revenues have increased by an impressive 13.8%.

Samsung’s revenues from the DRAM segment have fallen short of TrendForce’s original expectations, as the company was estimating revenues to increase by more than 20% in Q2 2020. This obviously didn’t come to pass, but even so, Samsung’s DRAM revenues have increased by enough to top $7.4 billion in the three-month period ending June. In terms of market share, Samsung was followed by SK Hynix and Micron Technology. All three companies have recorded increases in their operating margins.

The third quarter might not yield such positive results

Q2 2020 was a healthy quarter for the DRAM industry because OEMs have made a greater effort in stocking up on chips, fearing that supply shortages may be caused by the global coronavirus pandemic. And precisely because most OEMs have a decent DRAM inventory, the market research firm expects suppliers to experience a decline in profitability in Q3 2020.

Product shipments will reportedly stay flat in the third quarter of the year while chip prices are expected to drop. On one hand, server OEMs have apparently stocked up for two consecutive quarters, while on the other, enterprise server customers have lowered their spendings fearing economic uncertainties. Even so, Samsung will likely maintain leadership in the global DRAM segment in Q3 2020.

The year is 2020, “Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G” is a legitimate smartphone name Samsung attached to one of its flagships, and speaking of those – TikTok tech leaks are now a thing, apparently. Cue this new video sighting of Samsung’s upcoming foldable device immortalized via Twitter. The latest leak appears to originate from China, likely from a factory affiliated with Samsung, as the company shut down its production operations in the country last year.

Alternatively, the video may be have originated from Chinese telecom regulator TENAA, given how it’s consistent with the images the agency published earlier this week.

Chances of LTE-only Galaxy Z Fold 2 are increasing

Officially announced at Galaxy Unpacked 2020, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 will become available for pre-orders in early September. There’s still much confusion regarding its 5G support but as things stand right now, an LTE-only model is not out of the question. On the contrary, the very fact that the newly leaked device clearly bears the name of “Galaxy Z Fold2 5G” is a pretty strong indication that it’s going to be accompanied by a non-5G variant.

In total, Samsung is planning to produce some 500,000 Galaxy Z Fold 2 units, the vast majority of which will be sold outside of China given the firm’s dwindling presence in the Far Eastern country. Besides the Mystic Black finish shown in this TikTok leak, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is set to be offered in Mystic Bronze, Samsung’s latest signature device color. The Galaxy Tab S7 has received its first pre-release firmware update

The Galaxy Tab S7 series is a only couple of days away from shipping to early adopters in many markets and Samsung is already launching the first OTA firmware update for the tablet duo, or at least the Galaxy Tab S7+. The firmware update weighs a little under 350MB and as expected given the age of the device, it includes the August 2020 security patch.

The changelog is as generic as it gets, but similar to the first Galaxy Note 20 firmware update, it should provide bug fixes, performance improvements, and/or activate some missing features. This is a way for Samsung to make sure that the software experience is as fleshed out as possible on the first day of market availability, and Galaxy Tab S7+ buyers will have the firmware update waiting for them as soon as they unbox the tablet. Just tap the notification or open Settings on the device, access Software update and tap Download and install.

The software version remains unchanged but that’s simply because the Galaxy Tab S7 series already ships with the latest, i.e., Android 10 and One UI 2.5. Nevertheless, the Galaxy Tab S7 lineup is now guaranteed by Samsung to receive three major software updates instead of two, which technically means that owners should eventually be getting Android 11, 12, and 13 (tentative names) in the coming years.

Galaxy Tab S7 series sold out after one day of pre-orders, HQ says

The Galaxy Tab S7 series took only a day to completely sell out in South Korea. Neither Samsung nor its main distribution partners are currently offering online purchases of the Galaxy Tab S7 and Galaxy Tab S7+. Some smaller distributors may still process orders, but with the provision that those won’t be shipped on release date. The pre-sale period began yesterday and was supposed to run through Saturday, August 22nd.

In this regard, the Galaxy Tab S7 lineup performed 2.5 times better than the Galaxy Tab S6 range did last year, which is a figure that comes directly from Samsung itself.

Samsung ‘working hard’ to secure more Galaxy Tab S7 units

One local Samsung official was quoted as saying the company is already “working hard” to secure more tablets but it’s currently unclear how long that might take. Consumers who managed to place their pre-orders should expect their devices to arrive next week. The Galaxy Tab S7+ reportedly performed much better than its smaller counterpart, which is exactly what the company has been hoping for given how the more expensive slate undoubtedly yields a higher profit margin. The models were priced with that in mind, i.e. their price tags are meant to upsell you on the Galaxy Tab S7+, much like the Galaxy Note 20 series is pushing consumers toward its higher end.

The promising performance of the Galaxy Tab S7 lineup shows the tablet market is still far from saturated, though it has been stagnating in recent years. Samsung, however, managed to keep its tablet business steady even throughout all the chaos and uncertainty that 2020 presented so far.
