Samsung’s latest ad features some gangster music and a dancing baby

Samsung has come up with a new ad for the Galaxy S10 and the wearables launched along with it. The ad, titled ‘Samsung Galaxy: Seamlessly connect your Galaxy’, tries to showcase how Samsung products are designed to work together seamlessly. It features a Galaxy S10+, Galaxy Buds, Galaxy Watch Active, a crying baby and some gangster music.

In the ad, we see a baby suddenly stop crying when the phone (Galaxy S10+) starts to ring with Party Up from American rapper DMX as the ringtone. When the father declines the call from his Galaxy Watch Active with a simple swipe, the baby starts to cry again. The parents realize the baby likes the song and play it on the phone and later on a Samsung TV, all the while showing how easy it is to move from one device to another without any friction. The neat little ad ends with a happy baby dancing to the catchy song.

The 45-second commercial lacks any dialogue or jabs at Apple but is endearing and effective in its messaging. The Korean company also has a page centered on the theme of the ad on its website, where customers can learn more about the connected nature of its latest flagship smartphone and wearables.

Samsung came up with an equally appealing ad for its Galaxy Tab S5e recently. You can find that commercial here.

Android Pie update for the Galaxy Tab A 10.5 (2018) rolling out now

Samsung has already chalked up an impressive showing with the Android Pie update by pushing it out to multiple Galaxy devices in quick succession, and the company is continuing the streak this week by releasing the Pie update for the Galaxy Tab A 10.5 (2018), just a few days after the update was released for the Galaxy Tab Active 2. And it’s not just tablets that are leaving Android Oreo behind for more savoury pastures this week – Samsung has updated a couple of phones as well, including the Galaxy A8 Star and the Galaxy J7 (2017).

Android Pie is the first major update for the Galaxy Tab A 10.5 but it’s not the last. This unassuming mid-range tablet will also get Android Q at some point next year, along with plenty of other Galaxy devices. The Pie rollout has kicked off in the United Kingdom for the LTE model, although the Wi-Fi model shouldn’t be too far behind.

What’s new with Pie?

The update has the usual suspects as far as new features and functionality are concerned. There’s the new One UI interface for quicker access to important information and easier one-handed usage, a system-wide Night mode, a Kids Mode quick toggle, floating mode for the Samsung Keyboard app, and more. The changelog mentions support for the Galaxy Buds and Gear IconX (2018), but we’re not sure if those were incompatible with the tablet in the first place. The update also includes the June 2019 security patch.

If you have a Tab A 10.5 in the UK, you can download the update over the air by opening the Settings app on the tablet, selecting Software update, and hitting the Download updates manually option. Major updates are rolled out in phases, so you might want to check back later if the update isn’t available for you right now. Those willing to go the extra mile can also upgrade by downloading the Android Pie firmware from our database.

  • Model: SM-T595
  • Dimensions: 260.0 x 161.1 x 8.0mm
  • Display: 10.5” (319.7mm) TFT
  • CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 450
  • Camera: 8 MP, CMOS

Galaxy Fit launched in the US, Fit e misses the cut

Samsung has officially released the Galaxy Fit in the US. The newest Samsung fitness tracker went on sale in several other countries earlier this month alongside its cheaper sibling, the Galaxy Fit e. Apparently, Samsung has no plans to launch the latter in the American market. Both devices were announced back in February.

Galaxy Fit features and price

It’s been a while since Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Fit. So, in case you need a recap, it features a 0.95-inch full-color AMOLED display with a resolution of 120 x 240 pixels. It has a 120mAh battery, capable of powering the package for up to seven days on normal usage. The device runs on Samsung’s new Realtime OS and comes with MIL-STD-810G military-grade ruggedness certification. It has a 5 ATM rating for water resistance. Sensors on board include a heart rate sensor, gyroscope and an accelerometer.

In terms of features, you get automatic motion detection for tracking activities like walking, running, cycling, rowing and other dynamic workouts. The device is also capable of monitoring your sleep cycle and stress levels. The Galaxy Fit supports notifications from your connected smartphone, with options to respond via some preset responses.

Samsung has priced the Galaxy Fit at $99.99 in the US. It is available in black and silver from Samsung’s website and other authorized retailers across the country. Look forward for our review to know more about its functional capabilities, accuracy, battery life, and much more.

Indian telcos in talks with Samsung for 5G amidst Huawei’s growing troubles

Huawei is a market leader in the global telecom infrastructure market with close to 30% revenue share. It is also the second largest vendor in the worldwide smartphone market, with an ambitious goal to overtake Samsung by the end of this year. So, when the Chinese company started facing backlash from the US government and its allies over national security, many analysts believed Samsung would gain from this. Fortunately for Samsung, that’s precisely the direction the Indian telecom market seems to be heading.

According to a report in The Economic Times, India’s top two telcos, Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel, have initiated exploratory talks with Samsung for their respective 4G and upcoming 5G networks amidst uncertainty over Huawei’s future in the subcontinent. Both these telecom companies source their equipment from multiple vendors, but they are reportedly looking to cut down their reliance on Ericsson and Nokia as there could be possible supply issues if Huawei is banned in the country.

Samsung already has a strong relationship with Jio

Though Huawei is a vendor to both Vodafone Idea and Airtel, the former has relied more on the Chinese company in recent times. Currently, Samsung supplies telecom equipment only to Reliance Jio, the country’s third largest and fastest-growing telecom operator. The Korean company is already poised to benefit from its strong relationship with Jio when 5G deployment kickstarts in the country. If the uncertainty over Huawei’s future continues to linger in the market, other operators may also lean heavily towards Samsung.

5G in India is still a few years away as the government is yet to auction the spectrum. The Department of Telecommunications is reportedly divided over whether Huawei should be allowed to be part of 5G trials. Given how fragile and complicated Indo-China ties are, it is doubtful the Indian government will be as harsh as the US on Huawei, but the uncertainty seems to be enough to push many telcos towards Samsung.

Huawei ‘cautious’ with its foldable device following Galaxy Fold troubles

Here’s a good one from Huawei, the Chinese manufacturer that has seen its reputation going down the drain recently thanks to the sanctions placed on it by the Trump administration: Huawei has delayed the launch of its foldable smartphone from June to September because it’s “being more ‘cautious’ after Samsung’s foldable device, the Galaxy Fold, began to break when tested by reviewers in April.” That’s according to a report from CNBC, who were told by a Huawei spokesperson that the company doesn’t “want to launch a product to destroy our reputation.”

However, while you may think Huawei is being more cautious with the hardware design of its foldable device (the Mate X), the report says the delays are a result of Huawei “doing extra testing with mobile carriers around the world and developers to make sure their apps work when the device is fully unfolded.” It just seems like the Chinese OEM has name-dropped Samsung for the sake of it, perhaps as a way of getting some brownie points by reminding people that Samsung’s grand launch of its foldable phone didn’t go according to plan.

Galaxy Fold’s problems weren’t software-related

Samsung did mess up the Galaxy Fold’s launch, but it was because of a couple of hardware issues. The Fold’s software experience could do with improvements, and Samsung is seemingly working hard on that front, but none of it was a part of why the Fold missed its April release. It looks like Huawei is simply using the Fold’s troubles as an excuse to take extra time with its foldable device’s software before putting it in the hands of consumers instead of doing so with software updates, which is what it probably planned to do until it was blacklisted by Google and other North American companies.

Sadly, while Huawei is now aiming for a September launch for its foldable device, there’s still no word on when the Galaxy Fold will go on sale. Samsung hasn’t been very clear with information on that front, and the latest is that the Galaxy Fold won’t come out in July. Additional delay might see the Galaxy Fold and the Galaxy Note 10 hitting retail very close to each other, although we’re guessing the Fold won’t majorly affect Note 10 sales considering the former’s $2000 price tag and lack of support for the S Pen.

Samsung files a trademark application for ‘Tab Active Pro’

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab Active series of robust tablets may soon get a new member. The company has filed a trademark application for ‘Tab Active Pro’ at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) earlier this week. Samsung launched the rugged Galaxy Tab Active 2, the latest in the series, back in October 2017.

The trademark application was submitted by a London-based law firm called Fieldfisher LLP on June 13. This firm has filed trademark applications on behalf of Samsung in the past as well, including the ones for the Dynamic AMOLED Display on the Galaxy S10 lineup and the Rize series of smartphones (which continue to be a mystery).

Galaxy Tab Active Pro trademark

The Galaxy Tab Active 2 arrived with an 8-inch 1200×800 pixel resolution display nearly two years ago. The MIL-STD-810 device has IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. It is powered by a 1.6GHz Exynos 7880 processor with 3GB RAM and 16GB of storage. The Tab Active Pro should be its successor, if and when it launches. The ‘Pro’ in the name suggests that it could be the most expensive and powerful tablet in this series yet.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any credible reports or rumors surrounding the Tab Active Pro so far. However, Samsung is running a promotional offer for the Tab Active 2 in several markets right now, which suggests that a successor may be just around the corner. The Galaxy Note 10 launch event sometime in August seems the best bet for now.

T-Mobile Galaxy S9 June security update is out (no camera Night mode included)

T-Mobile has become the first US carrier to release the June security update for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. An update with software version G960USQS5CSEA and G965USQS5CSEA is now rolling out to the S9 and S9+ respectively, and it brings only the latest security fixes. Yes, that means the update does not include a Night mode for the camera app, unlike the June security update that was released for the Exynos model of the Galaxy S9 in some countries.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the new Galaxy S9 update is a basic one with just security enhancements. It could be a long while before Galaxy S9 owners in the US get the dedicated camera Night mode, as North American carriers haven’t even pushed out the new Galaxy S10 camera features yet. However, it was only with the May security update that Galaxy S10 owners around the globe received the new camera features, so it’s possible T-Mobile and other carriers will bundle those in the June update for the Galaxy S10 lineup.

Galaxy S9 and S9+ owners on the T-Mobile network should be able to download the update over the air from the Settings » Software update menu. If it isn’t immediately available for you, simply try again in a little while as it can take some time for an update to reach everyone. Unwilling to wait? Grab the new update by downloading the firmware from our database and flash it manually on your phone using a Windows PC.

Sprint Galaxy S10 5G release date has been confirmed

The Sprint Galaxy S10 5G release date has officially been confirmed today. It’s the second carrier in the United States to offer Samsung’s first 5G smartphone to customers. AT&T did make a similar announcement yesterday but it’s only offering the device to business customers and developers initially.

Verizon was the first carrier to sell the Galaxy S10 5G in the United States. The carrier actually had exclusivity on the 5G variant for a few weeks. It’s evident now that the exclusivity has now run its course.

Sprint Galaxy S10 5G release date is June 21

Sprint confirmed today that customers will be able to get the Galaxy S10 5G on its network starting June 21. It will initially be available only in the four markets where Sprint’s mobile 5G service launched late last month. The list includes Houston, Atlanta, Dallas and Kansas City. The handset will be available in other 5G markets like New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Phoenix and Washington, D.C. in the coming weeks.

Those who are interested in picking one up can place their pre-orders starting today on Sprint’s website. They can save $250 with the pre-order and then pay $40.28 per month with $0 down on the Sprint Flex Lease program for 18 months. The device costs $1,299 outright.

New Sprint customers will have to activate the 5G handset on its Unlimited Premium plan. It costs $80 per month per line and includes unlimited data, talk and text. That’s in addition to Amazon Prime, Hulu, Twitch Prime and Tidal HiFi access as well as 100GB of LTE mobile hotspot.

Sprint is also working with Hatch to provide 5G game streaming experiences for the Galaxy S10 5G. Samsung already launched the Hatch app for this device in the United States. It enables Galaxy S10 5G owners to play games like Hitman Go and Monument Valley over streaming without having to install them.
