Bixby update adds Finder integration, sharable Quick commands and more

Both Bixby and Bixby Routines have just received a couple of new updates to versions 2.3.19.10 and 2.5.38.2, respectively. The Bixby Routines update fixes a handful of issues with Samsung’s IFTTT tool, such as a bug that would lead to the Blue light filter being disabled in some situations, and an issue that would lead to an intermittent failure to launch an app.

However, the recent version of Bixby itself introduces quite a few new features aside bugfixes, and improves the way the virtual assistant integrates with your device. From better Finder integration to sharable Quick commands, there’s a lot to dive into with this latest Bixby update.

Better TV integration, Quick command sharing, conversation history

One of the latest additions to Bixby is the way it integrates with the Finder on Galaxy devices. Now, when users are searching for functions like mobile hotspot or do not disturb in the Finder, they’ll be given a list of Bixby Voice commands corresponding to the said function. In theory, this change could benefit Bixby Voice users in learning more about the assistant’s capabilities without having to navigate through Bixby Home and check all the capsules by hand.

The Bixby update doesn’t stop with the improvements added to the Finder. The new version also lets users interact with smart TVs (2020 or later models) through their mobile devices. As long as both the smartphone and the TV are registered under the same Samsung account, you can now ask Bixby to find and play videos by making voice requests on your phone.

Another new feature added with the latest Bixby update lets you share Quick commands with your contacts. You can now open Bixby, access Quick commands from the hamburger menu, go to your commands, tap the three-dot button next to the desired command and share it with a contact.

Last but not least, Bixby Voice now lets you check the conversation history from your interactions with the virtual assistant. Open the hamburger menu in Bixby Home, tap the name of the desired device, then go to Conversation history. From here, you can delete individual interactions/conversations or clear all of your past interactions with the assistant.

As usual, you can grab the latest updates from the Galaxy Store by opening the side menu and accessing the Updates section, or by checking the version of Bixby and Bixby Routines on your phone. Have you tried out the latest additions to Bixby? Let us know what you think in the comment section.

Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Fold 2 launch reportedly set for August 5

We’re only a couple of months away from the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Fold 2 launch. Owing to the ongoing pandemic, it’s highly unlikely that the company will conduct a full-fledged launch event. Earlier reports have suggested that Samsung’s next flagship smartphones will be launched entirely online.

A new report out of South Korea claims that Samsung has decided on a date for the online launch of the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Fold 2. As expected, both devices are likely going to be unveiled in the first week of August.

Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Fold 2 will get an online launch

The report claims that Samsung is going to conduct an online event for the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Fold 2 on August 5. Internal discussions are reportedly being held regarding the event and the plan to hold the event online is being viewed favorably.

The current global situation will definitely make it very difficult to hold a massive Unpacked event like Samsung does every year for its flagship launches. Its Unpacked events are attended by thousands who pack into a venue. Travel restrictions are still in place in many countries across the globe which will make it difficult for people to come to New York. Furthermore, a lot of people may not even be willing to travel in these uncertain times out of concerns for their health and safety.

It does seem highly unlikely at this point in time that Samsung would be able to conduct an in-person event come August. The Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and the Galaxy Fold 2 are most likely going to be unveiled online. Samsung’s regional offices may conduct smaller events for members of the media in order to get the word out about these devices.

Samsung has still not confirmed what its Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Fold 2 launch plans are. We don’t think it will come as a surprise when it ultimately announces that the event will be held online.

Samsung has nailed its smartwatch strategy and Apple knows it

Yes, this might seem like a controversial claim, but hear me out. We have seen all manner of smartwatches from Samsung ever since it started launching them under the Galaxy Gear brand in 2013. The original Galaxy Gear had a square-shaped display and Samsung stuck with that design for the next few models. Then came the Gear S in 2014 with its curved display.

Samsung first smartwatch with a circular display and physical rotating bezel came in 2015. It was the Gear S2 and it proved to be an instant hit. We pointed out in our Gear S2 review that Samsung had finally understood what a smartwatch needed to be.

Its decision to use the physical bezel as an input method was so simple yet effective. Rotating bezels have existed on conventional watches since the 1953 Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, widely considered to be the first watch with a rotating physical bezel. Samsung didn’t break any new ground when it came to watch design but it’s innovative use of this design element really made the market sit up and take notice of Samsung smartwatches.

Apple entered the smartwatch market in 2015 and by that time, the market was flooded with Android-powered smartwatches and the general perception was that they weren’t really that good. Apple was quick to position its smartwatch as more of a fashion accessory. It was that different marketing strategy and the fact that it already had a robust ecosystem of iOS device owners to rely upon quickly enabled the company to reach the top of the smartwatch market.

Its advantage over the competition has allowed Apple to take control of the smartwatch market but Samsung has consistently been on Apple’s heels. It still remains the second-biggest smartwatch vendor behind the Cupertino company and continues to inch upwards. Samsung’s upcoming smartwatch has the potential of further increasing Samsung’s share.

We exclusively revealed last week that Samsung’s next Galaxy Watch is going to have a physical rotating bezel. Samsung ditched it completely last year with the Galaxy Watch Active and then only brought back a touch-sensitive bezel with the Galaxy Watch Active 2. The fact that an honest to God rotating bezel is making a comeback is going to excite many Samsung fans.

I have always felt that Samsung made the best decision by opting for a rotating bezel instead of something like a rotating crown like the Apple Watch. In fact, I feel that it’s the best input method ever created for a smartwatch, period. It was certainly a shame to see it being ditched with the Galaxy Watch Active and even the touch bezel on its successor wasn’t as satisfying as the real deal.

One of the reasons why many people love Samsung’s smartwatches is that it doesn’t look all that different from a normal watch. There are no outrageous design elements and I’m sure many would agree that a circular design sits much better on the wrist compared to a square. All of this works in the next Galaxy Watch’s favor, this design coupled with a rotating bezel means that it will not really go “out of style” even in the next 70 years, despite the fact that the actual tech inside smartwatches would have significantly progressed by then.

Samsung also appears to be going after the more fashionable crowd with its next smartwatch. We have exclusively revealed that the new Galaxy Watch will be offered in Titanium. It’s a finish that Apple already offers for the Apple Watch while the material itself has long been used in conventional watches. This does have the potential of paying dividends for Samsung in the long run as the Titanium model will help attract a slightly more upscale demographic.

What Samsung lacks in order to trump Apple in this market is the brand equity that Apple has. The Apple Watch is the go-to smartwatch for most celebrities, influencers, models and public personalities. That’s partly because they’re heavily bound to the Apple ecosystem anyway and also because of the inherent “cool” factor of this device. Smartwatches are the kind of devices that you can’t really use in isolation. Look at it this way, while you can use Samsung’s smartwatches with non-Samsung Android phones, you’ll only be able to access limited features. Buy a Galaxy phone if you want to use every single feature.

Be that as it may, it doesn’t take away from what I believe to be true, which is that even Apple Watch owners who try out a Samsung smartwatch would feel that the latter’s interface is much better. Samsung has done a phenomenal job with the custom software on its smartwatches and particularly on models with a rotating bezel, flying through the interface is as effortless as it can be.

You may have noticed that in comparisons between the two smartwatches, reviewers continue to dock points from Samsung’s devices because of the lack of apps in comparison to the Apple Watch. It just doesn’t have as many developers creating apps for it as Apple does. However, if you weigh that against usability, it turns out that this isn’t really as much of an issue as it’s made out to be.

Ask yourself, just how many apps do you actually use on your smartwatch? Most people rely on these devices for health and fitness tracking anyway and there’s plenty of built-in and third-party apps available for Samsung smartwatches. The ability to make calls, shoot emails and texts, follow up on notifications and more has been present for years as well.

Nobody is buying a smartwatch to replace their phone. Smartwatches aren’t even capable of doing that yet. Think about it. You’re more likely to be playing on your phone as you wait for your meal to arrive in the restaurant instead of fiddling around on your smartwatch. There’s much that Samsung’s smartwatches get right and I’m very excited about this next one because it’s going to bring some very interesting improvements.

You may remember that it one point in time it seemed like the Apple Watch would go on to establish a monopoly in the smartwatch market. It felt as if nothing would measure up against it. Samsung has continued to soldier on and it’s very commendable that the company has carved a niche for itself in the market. It did that by thinking outside the box and doing things that no other smartwatch manufacturer was doing and that’s incredible to see. It’s clear that the smartwatch battle is far from over.

We’d love to know how you feel about Samsung’s smartwatch interface, particularly if you have experience using an Apple Watch as well. Can’t just help and smile sometimes at the ease with which you can control your Samsung smartwatch compared to all the swiping and crown scrolling that Apple Watch owners need to do? Do you feel that it’s the best way to interact with a device of this sort? What are your views on the app situation?

Samsung Group steps in to deny allegations against heir Lee Jae-yong

Samsung Group has stepped in to deny the recent allegations concerning heir Lee Jae-yong’s involvement in the controversial merger between Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries. The de facto leader was summoned for investigation by the Seoul Central District Prosecutor’s Office last week, and local prosecutors sought an arrest warrant for Samsung’s heir yesterday.

According to Yonhap News, Samsung Group’s recent statement claims Lee Jae-yong had no role in the merger of the two subsidiaries back in 2015.

‘Allegations that Lee took part in a stock price manipulation scheme are groundless’

Samsung Group states that the allegations regarding Lee Jae-yong’s involvement in stock manipulation are groundless. Samsung executives have been investigated on allegations of a deliberately-late announcement of an overseas Samsung C&T deal to manipulate stock values. However, Samsung Group now claims this to be untrue. Likewise, the company said the Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries valuations comply with regulations.

It remains to be seen where all of this will lead. Whether or not an arrest warrant will be issued for Lee Jae-yong will be decided on Tuesday at the latest, after a hearing will take place at a Seoul court on Monday. Should the worse for Lee Jae-yong come to pass, the de facto leader could end up being arrested on criminal charges once again.

Galaxy Note 20 and Z Flip 5G greenlit in China with fast chargers in tow

The Galaxy Note 20+ got greenlit by China’s 3C last week. The same regulatory agency has now approved the Galaxy Note 20 5G as well as the Galaxy Z Flip 5G ahead of their official debut. The S Pen device is identified by model number SM-N9810, whereas 5G-enabled foldable phone is being referred to as the SM-F7070.

The 3C documents confirm that the Galaxy Note 20 should be paired with with a 25W fast charger, whereas the Galaxy Z Flip 5G should retain the 15W charger that ships with the LTE model. Spec-wise, the Galaxy Z Flip LTE and 5G should remain fairly similar, although the latter model could employ a refreshed chipset. In any case, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G will be available in a brand new color, as exclusively reported by SamMobile nearly a month ago, so it will be difficult to mistake it for the LTE variant on store shelves.

The Galaxy Note 20 and Z Flip 5G are on track for an August reveal

The Galaxy Note 20 series and the Galaxy Z Flip 5G are expected to be unveiled in August according to Samsung’s yearly Unpacked schedule. But unlike in previous years, the next Unpacked event might take place in an online-only environment.

This isn’t as much about Samsung wanting to break tradition as it is about the COVID-19 pandemic rescheduling a variety of events around the world. The next Unpacked will likely be relegated to an online-only event for the safety of Samsung’s employees, its fans, and the press, but the mobile products themselves should be as exciting as ever.

Microsoft offers free Galaxy Watch Active 2 with discounted Note 10

Microsoft is at it again with a new killer deal for the Galaxy Note 10 series. After selling the duo for up to $400 off a couple of weeks ago, Microsoft’s latest offer brings new Galaxy Note 10 buyers a free Galaxy Watch Active 2. In essence, this means you can now get an unlocked Galaxy Note 10 with 256GB of storage and a Galaxy Watch Active 2 for $849. Normally, this combo would set you back anywhere between $1,229 and $1,249, depending on whether you’d get the 40mm or 44mm smartwatch. Meanwhile, buying the top-tier Galaxy Note 10+ with 512GB of storage through this Microsoft deal will set you back $1,099, and that’s with the Galaxy Watch Active 2 included in the purchase.

The list includes both the 40mm and 44mm models and they can be acquired in one of three color options: Aqua Black, Cloud Silver, and Pink Gold. Rumored 108MP sensor to skip Galaxy Note 20 and debut on Xiaomi phone

Samsung is working on an upgraded version of its ISOCELL Bright HM1 sensor, at least according to a fresh rumor that also claims the same sensor will first be employed by an upcoming Xiaomi smartphone. This upgraded sensor is said to be codenamed ISOCELL Bright HM2 and have a resolution of 108MP.

The high megapixel count shouldn’t be the only characteristic shared by the existing Bright HM1 and the rumored Bright HM2. It’s safe to assume that the HM2 will also use Samsung’s Nonacell technology, combining nine 0.8-micrometer neighboring pixels to create larger 2.4-micrometer pixels for better light absorption.

The Galaxy Note 20 series to skip the rumored ISOCELL Bright HM2

Much like the ISOCELL Bright HM1’s first commercial appearance leveraged on a Xiaomi smartphone, the redesigned sensor is also said to be debuting later this year on a future flagship from the Chinese OEM.

In other words, the so-called ISOCELL Bright HM2 might not be used by Samsung for the Galaxy Note 20 lineup. The Galaxy Note 20+ (or Note 20 Ultra) is expected to have an ISOCELL Bright HM1 sensor just like the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has, and combine the 108MP unit with the ISOCELL Slim 3M5 and ISOCELL Fast 2L3 sensors.

Earlier this year, a different rumor claimed that Samsung is working on an even more ambitious 150MP Nonacell sensor for Q4 2020. Similarly, this mysterious CIS is rumored to debut on flagships from Chinese OEM including Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi.

Galaxy S20 5G models in the Netherlands receive old update again

In the Netherlands, 5G variants of the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra are now receiving a minor software update that originally started rolling out late last month but was promptly pulled from the air in the country. It still carries the same firmware version — G98xBXXU2ATE6 — but updates the modem and carrier-specific code, presumably to fix 5G connectivity issues reported by users on Vodafone’s 5G network in the Netherlands.

As always, you can manually search for the new patch from your device’s Settings app, i.e. its Software update submenu. The full images of the new OTA can also be found in SamMobile‘s firmware archive.

Still no June 2020 security update in the Netherlands

The update doesn’t include the June 2020 security patch which began reaching the Galaxy S20 lineup several days ago. It’s instead just over 26MB in size, assuming you already have the previous upgrade installed, and leaves eligible devices still running security patch level dated May 1st. Samsung will probably release the new security patch for Dutch users in a matter of days as these 5G fixes apparently took precedence, Galaxy Club reports.

The Galaxy S20 series hasn’t been breaking any sales records since its February debut, though its 5G models have been doing somewhat decently – at least in the United States. It remains to be seen how the lineup performs in the second half of the year, especially after Samsung releases new flagship alternatives in the form of the Galaxy Note 20 family, as well as the Galaxy Fold 2.

No, Project xCloud is not coming to Samsung TVs (yet)

The Samsung Access program for smartphones was launched a few days ago. The premium ownership program includes smartphone financing, upgrade options, Microsoft 365 subscription, and accidental damage cover. We’ve now learned that the company has a similar program for its smart TVs.

Samsung Access for smart TVs is a bit different from Samsung Access for smartphones. The program for TVs lets go of the upgrade option and includes premium content from various partners and the Samsung Premium Care service. The Premium Care service includes setup assistance, parts and labor charges on electrical or mechanical breakdown (with $0 deductible), and power surge protection.

You can choose up to $120 worth of content subscriptions from Microsoft (Xbox Game Pass), Sling, Showtime, and YouTube. You can choose any one of the following content subscription options:

  1. Microsoft Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (8 months)
  2. Sling TV (4 months)
  3. SHOWTIME (12 months)
  4. YouTube Music Premium (12 months)
  5. YouTube Premium (10 months)
  6. YouTube TV (2 months)

A few websites are reporting that Microsoft’s Project Cloud and Xbox Game Pass could come to Samsung TV’s, but that’s not true, at least right now. If you choose the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription with Samsung Access for your TV, you could use it to play compatible games on Windows 10 PCs or Xbox for up to 8 months.

Project xCloud is compatible with select Galaxy smartphones, and Microsoft and Samsung have a strong partnership. So, there’s a chance of Samsung bringing Microsoft’s cloud game streaming to its smart TVs in the future, similar to how it offered Sony’s PlayStation Now game streaming service on its TVs. However, support for PS Now was later terminated.

New Galaxy Note 10 update out with June security patch

The Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ first received the latest security patch on unlocked Snapdragon models in the United States at the beginning of the month, and, as expected, it is now making its way to the Exynos-powered models internationally. The Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ are getting a new update in a couple of European markets that bundles the June 2020 security patch and also adds a new quick toggle to the notification shade.

After installing the update, you will find a toggle for the Call & text on other devices feature when you pull down the notification shade twice. This feature lets you take calls and send/receive text messages on a Galaxy tablet logged in to the same Samsung account as your smartphone, which is in turn connected to your carrier network. With the quick toggle, you can now disable the feature when you don’t need it and enable it when you do, without needing to go into the phone’s Settings app.

The latest update for the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ comes with firmware version N97xFXXU4CTE9 and is rolling out in Germany and Switzerland at the time of this writing. It should soon be available in other countries. You can download it on your phone by opening the Settings app, navigating to Software update, and selecting Download and install. You can also update your phone by downloading the latest firmware from our archive.

Galaxy S10 Lite picks up One UI 2.1 update in India

A few months back, Samsung India had announced that it would be postponing the release of the Android 10 and One UI 2.0 update for its smartphones and tablets because of the lockdown imposed in the country for battling the coronavirus. The One UI 2.1 update that Samsung has rolled out to multiple devices was also delayed in India as a result.

Two weeks back, Samsung India finally started releasing updates again, kicking things off with the Galaxy A50’s Android 10 update. Now, Samsung has also released One UI 2.1 in the country for at least one eligible device: Galaxy S10 Lite owners in India can now download the One UI 2.1 update and start enjoying a host of new software features.

All of these features debuted on the Galaxy S20 series and include Quick Share, Music Share, a basic Pro video mode and a number of other new camera functionality, such as Single Take, My Filters, and nighttime Hyperlapse recording. Unfortunately, the security patch included in the update is from the month of April, as the firmware version rolling out in India (G770FXXU2BTD2) is the same one that was released for the Galaxy S10 Lite in other countries a couple of months ago.

The update also doesn’t seem to be available over the air at this time, but that should change in the next couple of days. However, if you own a Galaxy S10 Lite and don’t want to wait, you can download the update via Samsung’s Smart Switch software for Windows or Mac. The One UI 2.1 firmware is also available for download in our archive for manual installation using a Windows PC.

Samsung and LG drop complaints against each other over QLED TV marketing

The two largest TV brands in the world, Samsung and LG, were fighting over the former’s QLED marketing claims. However, both companies have dropped complaints against each other in the South Korean market. The FTC (Fair Trade Commission) has decided not to further the process after the brands withdrew their charges.

In September 2019, LG had filed a complaint against Samsung Electronics for a “misleading advertisement” regarding its QLED TVs. LG said that Samsung’s QLED TVs are merely LCD TVs with a backlight that has an additional Quantum Dot panel, not a “true QLED” display that uses quantum-dot light-emitting diodes. One month later, Samsung filed a complaint against saying that LG needs to stop negative campaigning without clear proof.

Samsung uses the QLED marketing term for its mid-range and high-end TVs that use quantum dot technology to improve brightness, color volume, and contrast ratio. Even other brands like OnePlus and Xiaomi that use Samsung’s QLED display panels in their TVs have come up with their own marketing terms.

LG uses OLED panels in its high-end TVs that use true self-emitting pixels for deeper blacks and infinite contrast ratio. However, OLED TVs are susceptible to burn-in damages when images are retained for a long time on the screen. The company also sells its own version of QLED TVs with the ‘Nanocell TV’ branding.
