Galaxy S20 camera specs to include 64MP telephoto camera

The Galaxy S20 leaks continue to flow: Mere hours after a report detailed all the camera features we could see on Samsung’s upcoming flagship, leakster Ice universe has tweeted out the resolutions for the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra cameras. The Galaxy S20 and S20+ will reportedly have a 12MP main camera, a 64MP telephoto camera, and a 12MP ultra-wide camera, while the Galaxy S20 Ultra is said to have a 108MP main camera, 48MP telephoto camera, and a 12MP ultra-wide camera.

Recent rumors had claimed that the 108MP camera would only be seen on the Galaxy S20 Ultra, but it seems that will not be the only difference between the cameras on the three Galaxy S20 models. The telephoto sensors on the Galaxy S20 and S20+ have a higher megapixel count, and they will reportedly offer 3x optical zoom and up to 30x digital zoom. The zoom capabilities of the S20 Ultra will be considerably better – the phone is said to use the 108MP main camera and 48MP telephoto camera in conjunction to enable up to 100x zoom.

Most interesting, perhaps, is the downgrade in megapixel count for the ultra-wide camera. The Galaxy S10, Galaxy Note 10, and Galaxy Fold feature 16MP ultra-wide cameras, and we wonder if the shift to a 12MP sensor will make a lot of difference to picture quality when taking ultra-wide shots. As expected, the fourth rear camera will be a ToF sensor but will only be present on the Plus and Ultra models; the standard Galaxy S20 will have a triple camera setup like the Galaxy Note 10.

Galaxy S9 and S9+ get another Android 10 beta update

Samsung has released a new Android 10 beta update for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. This is the sixth Android 10 beta for the Galaxy S9 duo and comes with software version G96*XXU7ZTA9; it’s rolling out in India at this time but should soon be available in other countries where the Galaxy S9 One UI 2.0 beta program was launched. Like the last beta update, this one includes the January 2020 security patch.

The new beta brings a handful of bug fixesand updates the Camera app to a newer version. It remains to be seen if these will be the last few bugs that need fixing before the stable Android 10 update starts rolling out. The Galaxy S9 beta program has been proceeding noticeably slower than the beta program for the Galaxy Note 9, but with Samsung’s roadmap pointing at a January release for the Galaxy S9 and S9+ Android 10 update, it’s certainly possible that this will be the final beta update.

Of course, that’s just speculation, and Samsung may well need to release a couple of more betas before it can push the final Android 10 build to users. For now, if you’re enrolled in the beta program, you can download the latest beta over the air by tapping the Download and install option under the Software update menu of your phone’s Settings app.

Samsung Galaxy S20 camera modes, 8K video support revealed

Some more information about the Galaxy S20 has surfaced online today, following the first leaked live images of the Galaxy S20+ 5G. Samsung fans are counting down the days until February 11 when the company is finally going to unveil its new flagship smartphone.

We’ve previously expressed the wish that the Galaxy S20 needs to be a beast in the camera department in order to effectively compete in the saturated high-end market. Rumors have already suggested that the Galaxy S20 is going to up its camera game, and we now have some more information about exactly how it’s going to do that.

Galaxy S20+ can record 8K video, brings new camera modes

XDA Developers corroborates a recent report which quoted Samsung mobile CEO DJ Koh as saying that the Galaxy S20 will be the first smartphone to capture 8K video at 30 fps. The scribe also hears from its source that 4K video recording will be possible at 60 fps with both front and rear cameras.

Speaking of the cameras, the Galaxy S20+ is expected to feature a new 12-megapixel 1.8μm as-yet-unannounced sensor made by Sony. The Galaxy S20+ images have shown that there will be four cameras at the back. The others will be telephoto, ultra wide angle and presumably even macro cameras. Samsung’s 108-megapixel primary camera may only be present on the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

Unsurprisingly, Samsung will be introducing several new camera modes and features with the flagship. Smart Selfie Angle is one such feature. It will automatically switch the camera to wide angle when it detects that more than two people are in the selfie shot. This is going to make life a lot easier for users as most often forget that they can manually switch to wide angle for the selfie. The Zoom-In Mic feature that Samsung introduced with the Galaxy Note 10 last year is also making its way to the Galaxy S20 series.

Single Take Photo is a new camera mode that basically instructs the user to move their phone around the subject a certain way while it captures photos and short videos. The mode, which has its own UI in the gallery, will then recommend the best shots. A Pro Video mode is included too. The name suggests that it will enable users to utilize pro mode settings in videos as well.

Clearly, the Galaxy S20 will have a lot to offer in the camera department. Keep in mind that all of this information is from someone who appears to have their hands on a pre-production unit of the Galaxy S20+. Samsung may very well have some more surprises in store for us with the Galaxy S20 Ultra. All will be unveiled on February 11 at Samsung’s Unpacked event and we’ll be in San Francisco to let you know as it happens.

Sprint’s Galaxy Note 8 is getting the January 2020 security patch

The Galaxy Note 8 on Sprint is receiving a new firmware update containing the latest January 2020 security patch. The package doesn’t seem to include any new features, but it should fix a number of moderate and high-risk vulnerabilities within Android OS, as well as 17 issues found within Samsung’s own software. You can read more about the January 2020 security patch here.

The latest package rolling out now for Sprint’s Galaxy Note 8 is identified by firmware version N950USQS7DSL2. As mentioned above, the latest release doesn’t bring any new features to the table, but that’s not a big surprise for a relatively aging flagship. The Galaxy Note 8 launched with Android Nougat and has already been updated to Android Oreo, followed by Pie. Therefore, it already received its last major update and it won’t make the jump to Android 10. Even so, security patches should continue to roll out on the device for a couple more years.

The update is now available in the United States for the Galaxy Note 8 on Sprint, and you can check manually if the January 2020 security patch is waiting for you by opening Settings on your phone and checking the Software update menu. As always, you can also check our firmware archive, download the firmware, and install it on your phone manually.

Galaxy S20 wallpapers leaked, download them now!

When it rains, it pours. Over the weekend, a major new leak gave us a look at the Galaxy S20+ 5G, and now, wallpapers from Samsung’s upcoming flagships have hit the internet. Samsung seems to be going for a floral theme this time around, and as we saw with the Galaxy Note 10 wallpapers, all except one of the Galaxy S20 wallpapers are bright and colorful. Two live wallpapers are included as well.

Each of these wallpapers, published first by XDA, has a resolution of 3200×3200 pixels – the wallpapers that come preloaded on the Galaxy Note 10+ have a resolution of 3040×3040 pixels, so does this mean the Galaxy S20 series will feature higher-resolution displays compared to the Galaxy Note 10+? It’s possible, although we are assuming all three models will come with a lower resolution set as default out of the box, which is what Samsung has been doing for all of its flagships launched after the Galaxy S8 and S8+.

You can download the entire wallpaper collection, including the two live wallpapers, as a ZIP file by clicking this link. To download the individual wallpapers, tap/click on each wallpaper down below to enlarge it, then press and hold/right-click on the the image and select the save option.

Only Galaxy S20 Ultra may have SD card slot, 16GB RAM also expected

The Galaxy S20 Ultra will be the largest model in Samsung’s upcoming flagship lineup. It’s expected to feature a 6.9-inch Infinity-O display and will also offer the best specs of any model.

However, if a new dispatch from a Twitter leaker is to be believed, Samsung may have opted for the nuclear option to differentiate the Galaxy S20 Ultra from the lineup. It has been suggested that the Galaxy S20 Ultra may be the only model in the Galaxy S20 series to have a microSD card slot.

Galaxy S20 Ultra specs also include 16GB RAM and 5,000mAh battery

Samsung will definitely upset a lot of people if it decided to take away the microSD card slot on the more affordable Galaxy S20 models. People are still not over the headphone jack removal in recent flagships. Samsung also remembers how its fans reacted when the microSD slot was removed from the Galaxy S6 series. The reaction won’t be positive if this is done for the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+.

Cameras have long been the primary differentiator and it’s already believed that Samsung’s highly anticipated 108MP camera will only be present on the Galaxy S20 Ultra. It’s also claimed that the primary camera will be paired with a 48MP camera with 10x optical zoom and a 12MP ultra-wide camera.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra may also be the first Samsung smartphone to feature a staggering 16GB of RAM. Its base model will offer 12GB and that’s really going to be enough for most people. There will be 128/256/512GB options for storage. Lastly, it’s claimed that the Galaxy S20 Ultra will have a massive 5,000mAh battery with support for 45W super fast wired charging. No word as yet if it will ship with a 45W charger in the box. The possibility of all three Galaxy S20 models having eSIM support has been mentioned as well.

Just how much of this is actually true will only be known for certain once the Galaxy S20 lineup is officially unveiled on February 11 at Samsung’s Unpacked event. One thing’s for sure, though, Samsung’s going to take a lot of flak if it does indeed remove the microSD slot from all but one model.

How would you feel if this turned out to be true? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.

Samsung braces for higher 5G demand in USA, buys TeleWorld Solutions

As Samsung grows its 5G clientele in the USA, so does the demand for end-to-end support solutions. To support its customers in the emerging 5G era – ranging from commercial network operators to businesses that own private networks – Samsung has announced that it has completed an agreement to acquire TeleWorld Solutions (TWS).

TWS is a network service provider located in Chantilly, Virginia, with expertise in testing, installing, and optimizing network services. It will continue to operate as a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics America, and its existing clients will continue to receive support even after the acquisition was concluded.

With higher 5G demand comes better customer support

Samsung already represents an important piece of the 5G puzzle in the United States. It’s one of the bigger 5G players in this market, and it supplies both Sprint and AT&T with 5G network equipment. But an even stronger foothold in the USA is required as mobile carriers increase their demands for developing and deploying 4G and 5G networks. Samsung believes that the acquisition of TWS will provide just that, and it will make it easier for both Samsung and TeleWorld Solutions to tackle the ongoing 5G network upgrade cycle happening in the United States.

Analysts predict that 2020 will be a decisive year for Samsung’s 5G network business, but the year has barely started and the company is already boasting about new acquisitions to improve its relationships with customers. Samsung is striking the iron while it’s hot, in a manner of speaking. The company is in a favorable position, partly because of Huawei’s misfortune, and it seems to want and capitalize on its advantages as early in the year as possible.

Next OnePlus flagship has a 120Hz Samsung display with HDR, 1000 nits

The next flagship phone in OnePlus’ portfolio will reportedly boast a 120Hz display, and the reason why we’re telling you about this is that Samsung Display is the screen supplier. Now, this is no official guarantee that Samsung’s own flagship phones set to launch throughout the year will have a 120Hz display. After all, there’s a bit of Samsung in nearly every smartphone on the market, regardless of which brand they carry. Nevertheless, this confirms that Samsung Display is capable of mass-producing 120Hz panels for its clients. Sooner or later, the technology will eventually make it into Samsung’s own smartphones, and the Galaxy S20 series is a prime contender to that.

The Galaxy S20 could be the first to adopt a 120Hz display

There have been clues to suggest that Samsung’s next flagship phone series will be equipped with a 120Hz screen. From the unveiling of the Exynos 990 SoC with 120Hz support to a secret 120Hz display mode found in the One UI 2.0 beta, there are reasons to believe that the Galaxy S20 lineup could give users the option to choose between 60Hz and 120Hz refresh rates.

The 120Hz panel acquired by OnePlus from Samsung Display supports HDR and is said to be capable of reaching peak brightness levels of 1000 nits. The panel can be switched to 60Hz mode if so desired.

Samsung’s own flagships for 2020 could boast similar display characteristics. HDR support and up to 1000 nits of brightness are already par for the course in the Galaxy series, but 120Hz would make animations much smoother and the UI should feel more responsive as a result. A 120Hz panel also helps mobile gamers (at least for games that support 120Hz mode) particularly in fast-paced titles that benefit from a higher framerate. We’ll just have to wait and see if the Galaxy S20 will have one.

Base Galaxy S20 model to have no less than 12GB of RAM, claims rumor

The cheapest Galaxy S20 variant will be equipped with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM if we are to believe the latest rumor passed along by @UniverseIce on Twitter. This would make the series more consistent across the board, assuming that an option for 16GB of RAM won’t be made available for the Galaxy S20+ or S20 Ultra models.

The Galaxy S10e was released last year as the company’s most cost-conscious flagship variant, and prospective buyers had the option of picking between 6GB and 8GB of RAM. This year, however, Samsung seems to be abandoning the ‘e’ variant for its upcoming lineup and is expected to launch the standard Galaxy S20 as the base model for the flagship series. It, too, will have a minimum of 12GB of RAM, according to the source.

If this will indeed be the case then the entire Galaxy S20 lineup will likely share the same RAM configuration. That is unless Samsung will want to become the first OEM to equip a smartphone with 16GB of RAM and rush to the market to offer this choice to customers through the S20+ or Ultra models.

The Galaxy S20 lineup is scheduled for an official unveiling on February 11. You can keep up with recent developments through our dedicated Galaxy S20 page which we update with new information regularly.

Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 teasers go live in India

India was one of the first markets to get both the Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A70, but Samsung hasn’t been as keen on bringing their successors to the country, perhaps because the company also has its Galaxy M series of phones already crowding up its lineup in India. Indian pricing for the two handsets had leaked a week ago, but Samsung hasn’t said anything about when they will be available for purchase or even officially acknowledged they’re coming to the country, aside from putting up a couple of support pages.

That is changing today, as Samsung is now teasing the 2020 Galaxy A series on its official website. According to 91Mobilesboth the Galaxy A51 and A71 will launch in the country sometime this week, so it’s possible customers will be able to pick either device up before the Galaxy S10 Lite has gone on sale. As revealed by retailer Flipkart, the Galaxy S10 Lite will be available for purchase in India from January 23; a release date for the Galaxy Note 10 Lite has not been confirmed yet, but that will probably change within the next couple of days.

Will you be interested in buying either the Galaxy A51 or Galaxy A71?
