Galaxy Note 10 Marvel cases incoming: Captain America, Iron Man, and more

Samsung will release Marvel-themed cases for the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+, according to leakster Evan Blass. The Korean giant has been selling Marvel-themed accessories with its devices for a few years now, and the Galaxy S10 and some Galaxy A series phones had received Marvel-themed cases earlier this year. Now, Samsung is extending those cases to its new Note flagships as well.

The cases are based on what are no doubt the most popular Marvel characters at the moment: Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and the fourth-wall-breaking-foul-mouthed Deadpool. Fans of the god of thunder won’t find a Thor-themed case, and that might be because these cases seem to be based on the comic book characters — except Iron Man — and not the ones immortalized by the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies. An Avengers case is missing as well, although it could be part of the lineup whenever these cases are launched considering Samsung does sell an Avengers case for other devices.

Each case also has an NFC chip inside that will set a matching software theme, including a cool-looking wallpaper, on the phone when it’s put on. Pricing in unknown at this time nor is it known which markets will get these cases, but they could cost anywhere from €30 to €35 going by the prices for Marvel cases for the Galaxy S10 series and A series phones.

Check out images of the cases below, and download the Spider-Man and Iron Man wallpapers here and here.

Samsung secures 6 months’ worth of photoresist amid trade restrictions

Samsung Electronics managed to secure another batch of photoresist from Japan on Monday amid trade restrictions, according to a KBS report cited by ZDNet. Although the trade dispute between South Korea and Japan continues, the Japanese government has reportedly agreed on exporting enough photoresist to allow Samsung to manufacture semiconductors for six months. That is on top of an earlier export agreement settled at the beginning of August, which gave Samsung enough photoresist to manufacture chipsets for three months.

In theory, this means that Samsung Electronics should now have enough photoresist to create chipsets using the EUV manufacturing process for the next eight-to-nine months. The new Exynos 9825 employed by the Galaxy Note 10 series in most regions was manufactured on a 7nm LPP process using EUV (extreme ultraviolet lithography). With enough photoresist to last for three quarters, the chipset’s production should theoretically be unhindered, at least for a while.

Display compounds don’t seem to be covered by the latest agreement

Unfortunately, the trade restrictions imposed by the Japanese government also affect the export of hydrogen fluoride and fluorinated polyimide. Both of these compounds are vital to the manufacturing of displays, and the recent report makes no mention of any new temporary export agreements pertaining to them.

However, about a month ago Samsung Display was reportedly discussing with South Korean chemical manufacturing companies about the possibility of acquiring colorless polyimide locally instead of having to rely on Japanese suppliers. At that time, it was said that Samsung Display had enough polyimide inventory to last for two-to-three months. The display situation remains unclear, but at least it’s good to know that Samsung will be able to manufacture its EUV-based chipsets for the foreseeable future.

Samsung releases Android Pie update for the Galaxy Tab S3 and Tab A (2017)

Nearly a year after its official release by Google, Samsung has finally started rolling out the Android Pie update to the Galaxy Tab S3 and Tab A 8.0 (2017). The former is a flagship tablet from 2017, while the latter is a budget device from the same year. Both of them launched with Android Nougat onboard, making the latest release the second and possibly the last major update for these tablets.

Currently, the update for the Tab S3 seems to be rolling out only for the LTE variant in Malaysia, Philippines, and Vietnam. The update for the Tab A, meanwhile, is available only in Malaysia. As is the case with all Galaxy devices, the Android Pie update brings One UI and all its related features to these devices. You can read our One UI Feature Focus series to learn about all the new features the latest release brings to the table

Apart from the Android Pie update, the release also brings the August 2019 security patch to the Tab S3. As detailed in the August security bulletin, the latest security patch fixes, among other things, seven critical Android vulnerabilities and 17 Samsung-specific threats. The Tab A (2017), on the other hand, will still be on the June security patch even after the update.

If you haven’t received the update notification on your Galaxy Tab S3 or the Tab A (2017) yet, you can go to Settings, select Software Update, and tap on the Download updates manually option to check for its availability manually. If that doesn’t trigger the update, you have to either wait for your turn or download the latest firmware for your device from our firmware database and manually flash it. You can find the latest firmware for the Galaxy Tab S3 here and the Tab A (2017) here.

T-Mobile Galaxy Note 9 receives August 2019 security patch in the US

T-Mobile is rolling out a new update for the Galaxy Note 9 in the United States. It’s identified by software version N960USQS2CSGB and weighs a little under 200MB. The update doesn’t seem to bring any new features to the device, aside from the August 2019 security patch.

This is expected considering that features such as Night camera mode and QR scanner have already been introduced by T-Mobile to the Galaxy Note 9 about a week ago. At that time, the update weighed a heftier 882MB, but while it was packed with more features, the security patch level was lagging a bit behind. Now the device has been updated by the carrier to include the August 2019 security patch, which you can read more about in our detailed report. As usual, these software releases are designed to fix a number of vulnerabilities that affect both Samsung’s software and Android OS.

Same as before, T-Mobile is releasing the update over the air and US-based Galaxy Note 9 owners should receive an update notification before being able to download it. Should this not happen, users can try and trigger the update manually by opening the Settings app, accessing Software update, and then tapping Download and install.

Samsung reportedly asked to launch LTE variants of the Galaxy Note 10 in Korea

Samsung started adding a 5G variant to its flagship lineup beginning with the Galaxy S10. The company made the 5G model available in select markets along with the LTE versions. It offered both the options to customers since 5G rollout is still in very early stages while LTE is more mature and widely available.

Unsurprisingly, even the recently announced Galaxy Note 10/10+ come in 5G variants. However, this time, Samsung decided to skip the LTE models and launch only the 5G variants in South Korea. Despite Korea being ahead of many other markets in 5G rollout, it is still nowhere close to the ubiquity of LTE that a vast majority of people currently use.

Taking stock of the situation, officials from the Korean government have reportedly asked Samsung and the telecom operators to consider launching LTE variants of the Galaxy Note 10 along with the 5G models, according to a report in ET News. It appears Samsung has not given any assurances yet but has asked the government to wait.

The Galaxy Note 10 5G models are scheduled to go on sale in South Korea from August 23 onwards. If Samsung decides to launch an LTE variant in the country, it will reportedly take at least three months to do so. Another factor that is a cause of concern for Samsung and the carriers is the existing Galaxy S10 LTE inventory. When Samsung launched the Galaxy S10 5G in Korea, the carriers focused more on the 5G model to boost their 5G business, resulting in unsold Galaxy S10 LTE inventory.

Galaxy M30s gets Wi-Fi certification, 6,000 mAh battery expected

Samsung’s strategy of throwing a flurry of smartphones at various price points seems to be working really well for the company. After launching several phones under its new Galaxy M and Galaxy A series over the last few months, Samsung has now begun introducing “s” variants of them.

The Galaxy A10s, which launched last week, may soon be joined by the Galaxy M30s. The upcoming Galaxy M series phone with model number SM-M307F has just been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance. Samsung also has devices such as the Galaxy A30s, A50s, M10s, and a few more in the works.

Galaxy M30s could have a 6,000 mAh battery

The Galaxy M30s is an iterative upgrade to Samsung’s existing Galaxy M30 smartphone, which launched back in February. The new version is expected to pack better hardware and newer software. Key improvements may include a massive 6,000mAh battery and an upper-tier Exynos 9610 chipset. It should also get better camera sensors than the Galaxy M30. That’s just speculation right now, though. The Galaxy M30s will also be running Android 9 Pie right out of the box.

The Galaxy M30 packs a 5,000mAh battery, an Exynos 7904 SoC, and a triple rear camera setup comprising of a 13MP primary camera, 5MP depth sensor, and a 5MP wide-angle lens. The device is available in 4GB+64GB and 6GB+128GB storage variants. Samsung is expected to treat the M30s in a similar manner as far as RAM and internal storage are concerned, as we had exclusively revealed.

There’s no telling when Samsung plans to launch the Galaxy M30s and where. It may not be a long wait now, though. More details about the device should surface up in the coming days as we inch closer to its official launch.

Galaxy A50 August update improves fingerprint recognition, installs Snapchat

Samsung has pushed out a new software update for the Galaxy A50 in India today. In addition to the security patch for the month of August, the update brings improvements to the performance of the fingerprint sensor and also installs Snapchat for some reason. It also improves the battery charging algorithm and the overall stability of the phone.

According to reports from Galaxy A50 owners in the Samsung Members community, fingerprint recognition has become noticeably faster after the latest update. The last time Samsung improved the optical fingerprint sensor’s performance on the A50 was all the way back in April, so we’re assuming it’s not simply the placebo effect doing its thing. However, users are recommended to delete their saved fingerprints and register their fingers again to see the performance benefit.

The update sports software version A505FDDU2ASH3 and is a 320 MB download over the air. You can update your device by opening the Settings app, navigating to Software update, and selecting the Download and install option. Another way you can put your phone on the latest software is by downloading the relevant firmware from our firmware database and flashing it on the phone using a Windows PC.

Have you received the new Galaxy A50 update and noticed faster fingerprint recognition?

The 256GB Aura Glow variant of the Galaxy Note 10+ was the most popular model during the 11-days pre-order period. The device is priced at 1.4 million won (~$1,160) in the country. The 256GB Galaxy Note 10 5G costs 1.2 million won (~$992), while the 512GB variant of the Note 10+ 5G is priced at 1.5 million won (~$1,240).

Galaxy S8 and S8+ August security update rolling out in Canada

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are receiving a software update with the August 2019 security patch in Canada. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ are the last of Samsung’s flagship phones on a monthly security update schedule to be getting the August security update. The Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy S10e/S10/S10+, Galaxy S9/S9+, Galaxy Note 9, and Galaxy Note 8 have all been updated with the latest security patch in some markets.

According to users on Reddit, the update brings nothing other than security fixes, which isn’t the least bit surprising as the Galaxy S8 and S8+ have now been on the market for almost 2.5 years. The S8 and S8+ did, however, get a new camera feature recently: Point-and-shoot QR scanner functionality that removes the need for Bixby Vision and third-party apps for scanning QR codes. The Galaxy S8 duo are not eligible to get any more major Android OS upgrades and will only get security updates for the remainder of their official support period.

The Galaxy S8 update rolling out in Canada is available over the air on all major carriers. You can download it on your phone from the Settings » Software update menu. Updates are released in stages, so you may have to try downloading it again at a later time. You can also skip the queue and upgrade by flashing the relevant firmware (version G95*WVLS6CSH1) on your S8 or S8+.
