This is the Samsung Chromebook Pro, and it comes with a PEN

Samsung has quietly listed a new Chromebook on its Korean website. Dubbed Chromebook Pro, it runs Chrome OS and features a 12.3-inch touchscreen display (3:2 aspect ratio) with 400 nits brightness and a resolution of 2400 x 1600 pixels. It uses a 360-degree hinge and comes with a stylus. Samsung is not calling the stylus an S Pen, though. It’s now just called a PEN.

The Chromebook Pro is equipped with a 2GHz hexa-core processor (two Cortex-A72 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores), 32GB onboard storage, and 4GB RAM. It can run Android apps, now that Google has introduced the Play Store on Chrome OS. Moreover, the laptop looks like it’s made out of aluminum, and there’s an inbuilt slot to store the PEN. It is 13.9mm thin and weighs just 1.08kg. The chiclet-style keyboard on the laptop has curved keycaps.

Samsung is claiming on its website that the Chromebook Pro can last up to 10 hours on a full charge. It comes with two USB Type-C ports, a headphone jack, and an SD card slot. Samsung is also offering ad-free, one-year subscription of AirDroid app. The laptop is currently listed on Adorama, and it can be preordered for $499. Samsung could announce the Chromebook Pro in a few days.

Here’s what Samsung is offering as a compensation to those who pre-ordered the Galaxy Note 7 in India

Samsung opened the pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 7 in India on August 22, and the company was supposed to ship the phablet starting September 2. However, Samsung announced a global recall of the smartphone internationally, but Samsung India remained tightlipped about the whole situation. Now, Samsung has announced that it will offer compensation to customers who preordered the Galaxy Note 7 in India.

As per Samsung’s announcement, customers who preordered the Galaxy Note 7 in India will be eligible to receive the new Gear VR (worth INR 7,290) and the Level U stereo wireless headset (worth INR 2,999) for free on the purchase of either the Galaxy S7 or the Galaxy S7 edge. The company will also provide them an Oculus VR voucher worth INR 3,300 ($50) and a one-time screen replacement for a period of 12 months from the date of activation of their new Galaxy S7 or S7 edge.

Galaxy C9 Pro photos leak, show new antenna design of its non-Pro sibling

Samsung has been busy working on its Galaxy C series once believed to be exclusive to China (the Galaxy C9′s appearance at the FCC in the US puts an end to this theory, though), with the Korean giant having already launched the metal-clad Galaxy C5 and Galaxy C7 in China. The Galaxy C9, a smartphone to tower above the C5 and C7, has been leaked as the next exclusive handset in the series, and as the C5 and C7 get Pro variants (C5 Pro and C7 Pro), so now the Galaxy C9 will follow in the same path with a Pro variant of its own.

We reported earlier in the day that the Galaxy C9 has a new antenna design where the antennas themselves (placed at the top and bottom of the handset’s back cover) match the color of the handset. The reason behind this pertains to aesthetics and design. Most metal-clad smartphones today (think of the HTC 10, for example) feature antenna bands that are usually white, which makes them stand out on aluminum metal rather easily.

The Galaxy C9 Pro, in leaked photos showing traditional metal gray and gold designs, also shows the tri-antenna band design of its non-Pro sibling, the Galaxy C9. In one photo, Samsung calls the antenna bands the “next level of antenna craftsmanship,” with the Korean giant aiming to achieve in metal design what few have done over the years without the common huge, white antenna bands. What Samsung is trying to achieve here is a design that both accommodates metal smartphones and antenna bands simultaneously without the need to “hide” what some see as a disruption to good design in the name of practicality.

As far as the specs of the Galaxy C9 Pro, we don’t know the specifics just yet, but we know that the non-Pro Galaxy C9 will sport a 6-inch display with Full HD (1920 x 1080p) screen resolution, 6GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 SoC, and feature 16MP front and back cameras. We don’t expect the Galaxy C9 Pro to pack any less of a punch at launch.

[Interview] Here’s how Samsung came up with the design of the Gear S3

Samsung often takes to its Newsroom to share short interviews conducted with its leading designers to shine some light on the work that goes into making its latest devices. However, the company tends to leave many questions from loyal fans unanswered, including us.

A couple of weeks ago, though, we were given the opportunity to have a discussion with one of the senior developers on the Gear S3 team. During the session, we asked a total of ten questions relating to how the firm settled on the watch’s design, software features and internals.

Check it out below:

How did you first come up with the idea for the Gear S3′s design? Were any of changes made in response to user feedback?

Influenced by the craftsmanship of traditional watches, the Gear S3 was created based on intensive research and surveys from consumers, industry leaders and watch experts all around the world.

Every feature, from the circular bezel to the premium finishing and buckles, has been reimagined to elicit the look of a classic timepiece.

The Gear S3 is a product that takes after the heart of artisan watchmakers and their highly detailed craft, while expanding further with the latest in digital technology. Taking up a design heritage of the Gear S2, we put a great deal of effort into making the Gear S3 as close to a real watch as possible.

We also sought the advice of some of the world’s greatest watchmakers, including Yvan Arpa, one of the most audacious and avant-garde watch creators of today.

There are currently two models of the Gear S3 on the market — the Gear S3 classic and Gear S3 frontier. What main factors inspired the separate designs of the two timepieces?

We wanted to create a device that marries traditional professionalism and digital innovation. The Gear S3 frontier is inspired by the active explorer and features a bold, rugged outdoor look that blends form and function. The Gear S3 classic depicts minimalism and elegance, and was designed to have the same consistency and balance found in luxury watches.

Why did you decide to make the Gear S3 IP68 water resistant and not entirely waterproof?

We continue to focus on developing innovative devices and services that enhance consumer’s connected experiences and everyday lives. The Gear S3 is IP68 certified for water resistance and offers military-level durability, so you can wear it while biking in the rain or swimming in the lake.

The Gear S3 classic and Gear S3 frontier both feature compatibility for Bluetooth, LTE, Wi-Fi, NFC, and GPS. However, Cellular connectivity is restricted to just the latter. Why did you choose not to implement this on both models?

The Gear S3 frontier‘s LTE connectivity is geared towards consumers who lead an active lifestyle and will benefit from a smartwatch that offers more standalone capabilities, including the ability to make phone calls directly from their smartwatch.

SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC

When developing the software for the Gear S3, you teamed up with BMW to bundle the BMW Connected Car applications on the wearable. Will you be collaborating with other vehicle manufacturers to bring their similar services to the device?

We are expanding the app ecosystem with the Gear S3 to offer consumers more choices and robust tools to enhance their smartwatch experience. We have collaborated with BMW and Volkswagen.

Through open collaboration with developers and partners, we are continuing to enrich its wearable ecosystem to provide users with more optimized and unique Samsung Gear experience.

The Gear S3 ships with a 22mm band, while the Gear S2 has a 20mm strap. What influenced your decision to make this change? And why did you opt not to offer a metal strap?

The band was designed to meet with the Gear S3′s overall design language considering its size and shape. The Gear S3 is compatible with standard 22mm watch bands, so you can change the bands depending on the occasion, your outfit or mood.

Personally, I believe that the Gear S3 is a huge improvement on the Gear S2. Not only is it faster, but it’s also smarter. Unfortunately, the added weight is preventing me from ordering it. Do you think this is something that consumers will be put off by?

The Gear S3 was created based on intensive research and surveys from consumers. Both the Gear S2 and Gear S3 cater to consumers looking for a smartwatch that offers a connected experience and intuitive functionality optimized for everyday use.

We offer a different type of smartwatch to meet various needs, so consumers who want more minimalistic look may prefer the Gear S2, while the Gear S3 targets to people who lead active lifestyles.

SAMSUNG CSC SAMSUNG CSC

The Gear S3 classic and Gear S3 frontier are your first wearables to use MST technology for Samsung Pay. What challenges did you need to overcome to integrate this technology into the device?

As part of our phone+ strategy, we believe including Samsung Pay capabilities on our smartwatches was a natural extension of the service. Samsung ensures that each hardware specification perfectly complements the innovative functionality of each device.

As such, our R&D team built both the MST and NFC technologies into our Gear S3 devices, making efforts to transform the shape of the MST antenna to maximize performance on the Gear S3, so that our customers would be able to enjoy the same seamless experience and functionality they have come to expect from our smartphones.

Are you planning on adding any additional variants to the Gear S3 line? I think a dedicated sport variant with enhanced fitness tracking functionality would do particularly well.

Our mission is to understand consumers’ needs and provide technology, services and solutions to meet those needs. We cannot disclose information about our future lineup at this time, but can assure you that we’ll keep listening feedback and create products to fit individual lifestyles.

What would you say is the Gear S3′s best feature that’ll be most appealing to customers?

The Gear S3 has several signature features that we believe come together to make it appealing to customers, including an enhanced design, a more refined user experience and innovative technologies, such as IP68 water resistance, mobile payments and LTE connectivity.

Samsung has started firmware development for the Galaxy S8

We’ve learned that Samsung has just started firmware development for the upcoming Galaxy S8. At present, the ROM is being developed for use in China, France, Germany, Italy, Korea, Poland, the United Kingdom and the United States. Other countries will follow, though, once the first stable build has been created and can be adapted for use in additional regions.

It’s worth noting, however, that this doesn’t mean that the Galaxy S8 will be introduced early. In fact, it was exactly this time last year that Samsung kicked off its firmware development program for the Galaxy S7, which leads us to believe that the long-rumored handset will actually be announced at the event it has scheduled for Sunday, February 26 ahead of MWC in Barcelona.

As you can imagine, Samsung has a lot riding on the success of the Galaxy S8. Recent leaks and rumors point towards two variants launching — one with a 2K 5.1-inch curved Super AMOLED display and the other with a 5.5-inch 4K panel. It’s also expected to be powered by the 10nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 830 processor globally, but will sport Samsung’s in-house Exynos 8895 CPU in some markets.

In addition, the larger model is believed to pack a dual-camera system similar to the one on board the iPhone 7 Plus. If that’s not enough to excite you, a recent report suggests that a new artificial intelligence assistant will replace S Voice on the Galaxy S8. Samsung’s recent acquisition of Viv Labs has led many to believe that it will work in a similar way to Siri.

Samsung Notes app comes preloaded on the Galaxy J5 Prime and J7 Prime

With the Galaxy Note 7, Samsung introduced the newest version of its software, unofficially dubbed Grace UX. In addition to revamped interface elements, the Note 7 came with quite a few new features not seen on Samsung devices that came before it. The Samsung Notes app was one such new feature – Samsung Notes combines all of the company’s different note-taking apps into a single app, making things less confusing and more streamlined for anyone looking to jot down notes on their device.

Samsung had said that it would bring Samsung Notes to other Note devices at some point, although we are yet to see an existing device get an update that includes the company’s consolidated notes app. Well, that doesn’t mean Samsung Notes is exclusive to the now discontinued Galaxy Note 7 – it turns out that the app comes preloaded on the Galaxy J5 Prime and Galaxy J7 Prime. You’re probably thinking why we’re making an entire post out of this, but we just thought it interesting that Samsung put a Note 7 feature into phones outside the Note lineup and forgot to mention it in its marketing material. But we guess it was inevitable, as Samsung Notes is bound to make its way to every Galaxy phone in the future.

To make it clear, the Galaxy J5 Prime and Galaxy J7 Prime don’t get the new Grace UX, which is currently only available on the South Korean exclusive Galaxy A8 (2016). The upcoming Galaxy Grand Prime+ will also have the new interface out of the box, although it remains to be seen when Samsung will start pushing it to existing devices. With the Note 7 now out of the market and with Samsung falling back on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge as its main flagships, the company would do well to quicken its pace and deliver the newest iteration of its Android skin to more devices as quickly as possible. Android 7.0, of course, would be a nice bonus.
