Galaxy S10 Gear VR support confirmed by Samsung

There used to be a time when Samsung would launch a new Gear VR headset with its new Galaxy flagship. It hasn’t done that for the past couple of years. The company made no mention of a headset during its Galaxy Unpacked event yesterday. However, the Galaxy S10 Gear VR support has now been confirmed by Samsung.

Even though it hasn’t made a new headset for the lineup, Samsung confirms that the Galaxy S10 will work with the existing Gear VR. You’ll just have to use an adapter for it.

Galaxy S10 Gear VR support has been confirmed

A spokesperson for Samsung confirmed to The Verge that “Yes, the latest model Gear VR will work. Gear VR comes with an adapter that will work with S10.” All four variants of the flagship are compatible. This includes the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S10 5G.

It’s pertinent to note here that the adapter that ships with the Gear VR will be all that’s required to use your Galaxy S10 with a headset. That’s going to make life considerably easier compared to the Galaxy Note 9. Last year’s phablet required an adapter as well but customers had to contact Samsung to get it in the mail.

There’s no saying if and when Samsung is going to make a new virtual reality headset. Perhaps it may launch one with the Galaxy Note 10 later this year. Its focus has certainly shifted from this product in recent years but evidently, it’s not giving up on VR just yet.

You may only be able to buy Galaxy Fold from AT&T and T-Mobile

Samsung has confirmed yesterday that you will be able to buy Galaxy Fold from April 26. The company’s foldable smartphone is just around the corner and we can’t wait to get our hands on it. You may have to switch carriers in the United States if you’re not on AT&T or T-Mobile.

It seems that the foldable smartphone will only be offered through these carriers. Those who subscribe to Verizon or Sprint appear to be out of luck. Samsung would sell the Galaxy Fold unlocked so if you’re willing to spend almost $2,000 outright, it will happily let you.

Won’t be possible to buy Galaxy Fold from Verizon or Sprint

Samsung has only said that customers in the United States will be able to buy Galaxy Fold from AT&T and T-Mobile. It didn’t mention Verizon or Sprint which suggests that these two carriers may not get the device.

Whether or not the Galaxy Fold will work on these carriers remains to be seen, since customers can bring their own devices to the carriers. However, it’s pertinent to note that both Verizon and Sprint rely on different mobile technology for 3G networks and it’s quite possible that the Fold doesn’t have support for it.

Verizon subscribers don’t have much to be sad about, though. The carrier is getting an exclusive on the Galaxy S10 5G. While this variant will be available from other carriers, Verizon will be the first to sell it in the United States.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold goes on sale come April 26. Prices start at $1,980. Samsung has confirmed our earlier exclusive that there’s going to be a 5G variant of the Galaxy Fold as well. It’s going to cost more and will be available later this year.

Samsung lets you remap Galaxy S10 Bixby button to open any app you want

In recent years, one of the first things that most people do after buying a new Samsung flagship is search for tutorials on how to remap the Bixby button. It hasn’t been possible to do that but you could disable it. That changes with the Galaxy S10. Samsung actually lets you remap Galaxy S10 Bixby button to open any app that you want.

This means that the Bixby button is no longer a useless addition to the device. Those who didn’t use Samsung’s assistant had to put up with a button that served no purpose. The ability to remap the button to open any app on the device is certainly welcome.

Remap Galaxy S10 Bixby button to launch a third-party app

The physical Bixby button has been a staple on Samsung’s Galaxy flagships since the Galaxy S8. There were third-party apps that let you remap the button but Samsung was quick to drop the banhammer on them. It did allow users to disable the button so that nothing would happen were you to press it. It also tweaked the software to make accidental presses of the button less bothersome.

There won’t be a need for a third-party app since Samsung is allowing you to remap Galaxy S10 Bixby button natively. You can choose to open any third-party app with a single or double-press of the button. The option that you don’t assign to a third-party app will open the Bixby feed instead. For example, if you configure a single-press to launch Instagram, a double-press will then launch Bixby Home. The behavior of the button when it’s held down doesn’t change as it would still launch Bixby Voice.

Allowing users to remap Galaxy S10 Bixby button means that Samsung gives them an incentive to not disable it right out of the box. When they do that it serves no purpose for anyone. At least this way Samsung can ensure that the button does bring up Bixby by making a small but meaningful concession. It’s certainly a step in the right direction.

T-Mobile Galaxy S10 unboxing video involves skydiving

T-Mobile has made a habit of creating some rather unique unboxing videos for Samsung’s new flagships. The carrier’s product expert @AskDes kicks things up a notch every year. The T-Mobile Galaxy S10 unboxing video is now live. It involves jumping out of an airplane at over 12,000 feet.

The footage that you see in this Galaxy S10 unboxing video was captured using a Galaxy S10. It thus provides a good example of the video quality of the new flagship.

T-Mobile Galaxy S10 unboxing video

Magenta has given us some pretty cool unboxing videos for Samsung flagships over the years. It unboxed the Galaxy S7 underwater to drive home the point that the devices were water resistant up to 5 feet for 30 minutes. It swapped out the swimming pool for the Galaxy S8 and unboxed it as @AskDes swam with the sharks in West Palm Beach, Florida.

It went in a mildly amusing direction with the Galaxy S9 unboxing which was done on the “moon” to basically show that last year’s Samsung flagships were out of this world, which they most certainly were.

Enter the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+. To be honest, there’s not much “unboxing” happening in this video. All of the contents are laid out on the table and it’s what you’d expect. There are AKG-branded wired headphones, a charger and a USB Type-C charging cable in the box.

The fun part is when professional skydivers jump from over 12,000 feet in the air and demonstrate wireless PowerShare in free fall. PowerShare is a new feature on the Galaxy S10 which lets you wirelessly charger other smartphones and wearable devices using the handset’s own battery.

It’s pretty interesting to watch the entire thing so do check it out. Let us know what you think about it in the comments below.

Galaxy S10 gets an exclusive version of Adobe Premiere Rush

It’s not uncommon for Samsung to link up with app developers to bring useful tool for those who purchase its flagship smartphones. The company has done just that with Adobe for the Galaxy S10. Samsung’s new flagship lineup is going to get its exclusive version of Adobe Premiere Rush.

For those who are unaware, Premiere Rush is a cross-device video editing app that’s made for the modern age. It’s meant to make it easier for creators to edit their videos on the go in an age where the vast majority of video content is captured using mobile devices. It offers them powerful editing tools so they don’t have to use a PC to edit footage captured on their smartphone.

Adobe Premiere Rush allows video editing on the go

The Galaxy S10 is a powerhouse in the camera department so this partnership makes perfect sense. Samsung confirmed during its Unpacked event today that the Galaxy S10 will receive an exclusive version of the Adobe Premiere Rush app later this year.

Samsung didn’t go into a lot of details about how the Galaxy S10 exclusive version of the app will be different from the generic Android version that’s also due later this year. It only said that the app would be “Optimized for Samsung.” Adobe Premiere Rush is currently available only for iOS devices. Whether or not this partnership will lead to a discount on Premiere Rush for Galaxy S10 owners remains to be seen as well.

Galaxy Watch Active, Galaxy Fit and Galaxy Buds price and release date

Samsung has unveiled a handful of new wearable devices today. They have all been launched under the Galaxy umbrella, a shift that Samsung made last year with the Galaxy Watch. The updated lineup includes a new smartwatch, new fitness trackers and wireless earbuds.

The Galaxy Watch Active, Galaxy Fit and Galaxy Fit e, as well as the Galaxy Buds, are the new wearable devices that Samsung has unveiled at its Unpacked event today. Samsung has now confirmed the price and release date information for these devices.

Samsung confirms the price for its new wearable devices

The Galaxy Watch Active is the successor to the Gear Sport. It gets a new design with a smaller 1.1-inch 360×360 display. The Galaxy Watch Active does not have a rotating bezel like the previous smartwatches from Samsung did. It also gets the Exynos 9110 processor with 768MB of RAM and 4GB internal storage. It supports fitness tracking, sleep monitoring, blood pressure monitoring and more. Samsung will release it on March 8 with a price tag of $199.99.

Samsung has also introduced two new fitness trackers today called the Galaxy Fit and Galaxy Fit e. Both can start tracking activities like running and biking automatically. They have a simple and intuitive UX and are water resistant up to 5ATM. Their main differences include the display size, battery, RAM and more. The Galaxy Fit and Galaxy Fit e will be priced at $99.99 and will be available from May 31.

The Galaxy Buds are Samsung’s latest wireless earbuds. It has tweaked the design and introduced some new features. The carrying case is wireless charging compatible so you can charge them on the go even using PowerShare on your Galaxy S10. The Galaxy Buds will be offered as a pre-order incentive with the Galaxy S10 in select markets. They will also be sold separately for $129.99 starting March 8.

Galaxy S10 camera features: a photography powerhouse

Samsung has just officially unveiled the Galaxy S10 and its powerful cameras at the Galaxy Unpacked in San Francisco. The Galaxy S10 and S10+ come with a triple-camera setup at the back. These two devices get a 12MP F1.5-F2.4 (Dual Aperture) primary sensor, a 12MP F2.4 telephoto lens, and a 16MP F2.2 ultra-wide lens with a 123-degree field of view. The Galaxy S10e, however, gets only two cameras at the back, the 12MP primary sensor and the 16MP ultra-wide sensor. The 5G Galaxy S10, meanwhile, also gets a 3D Depth Camera at the back.

On the front, the S10+ gets a 10MP sensor with Dual Pixel autofocus and 4K video recording, and an 8MP depth sensor. The S10 and S10e only get the former. However, it’s not just about numbers. The Galaxy S10’s cameras bring a host of new photography features to a mobile device. Here’s a round up of all the Galaxy S10 camera features.

Galaxy S10 camera features

The Galaxy S10’s next-generation Neural Processing Unit (NPU) makes its cameras even more powerful. The Scene Optimizer can now analyze more complex scenes, and can also recognize more scene types. The Galaxy S10’s camera recognizes up to 30 different types of scenes (up from 20 with the Galaxy Note 9). The camera also provides the user with suggestions to improve the photo, such as taking a Bright Night Shot in low-light conditions or switching to the Ultra Wide lens when capturing a landscape.

Samsung has also introduced a new Shot Suggestion feature, which offers helpful tips to further improve your photo. The feature utilizes a database of over 100 million pictures to suggest you proper proportions, positioning and overall composition of a shot. The Galaxy S10 also gets an Instagram Mode, which places Instagram’s Stories feature directly in the phone’s camera app. You can share photos on Instagram with one tap.

The upgraded Live Focus mode allows you to customize your photos with artistic effects in the real time, even before you capture a shot. The Galaxy S10+ utilizes its dual front cameras to add new spin bokeh, zoom bokeh, and colorpoint effects. The regular S10 and the S10e utilize the NPU’s intelligence to support the feature.

The Galaxy S10 also makes recording videos much smoother. The Super Steady video-recording feature brings up to three times better video stabilization than existing smartphone camera technologies. And for the first time ever in a smartphone, you can record videos in stunning HDR10+.

AR Emoji also gets a revamped design and improved functionality. Along with your face movements, AR Emoji can now also track your eyes, tongue and body movements, including your arms and legs. The new Mask Mode lets you choose an emotion you want to express and create an emoji of it with your face. You can also create your own stickers with unique expressions and backgrounds.

And finally, the Galaxy S10 5G’s 3D Depth Camera takes depth-capturing to the next level. It measures the time an infrared light signal takes to bounce off the photograph’s subject to better determine depth. This allows the Video Live focus feature to apply cinema-quality bokeh effects to recorded videos. There’s also a Quick Measure feature which helps you to measure distance, area or volume.

Galaxy Home launch due in April, says Samsung CEO

Many Samsung fans have been wondering about the Galaxy Home launch. Samsung showed off its Bixby-powered smart speaker last year but has not revealed much about it since then. We didn’t hear much about it at SDC 2018 in November or at CES 2019. Samsung didn’t mention it on stage during its Galaxy S10 event today.

However, Samsung’s mobile boss DJ Koh did answer a question related to the Galaxy Home launch in an interview. He confirmed that the device is going to be out by April this year.

Samsung Mobile CEO sheds light on Galaxy Home launch

It has been a while since we have been waiting for the Galaxy Home. It was originally shown off at the Galaxy Note 9 launch event in August last year. Samsung hasn’t revealed a lot more about this device since then.

Koh told CNET following the Unpacked event in San Francisco today that the Galaxy Home speaker is going to be launched in April. He didn’t provide any specifics so it’s not exactly clear precisely when the smart speaker is going to be released. At least we have a target month now.

We have since reported exclusively that Samsung is working on a second Galaxy Home smart speaker. Our information reveals that the new Bixby speaker will be a toned down version of the original product. This would make sense as the original Galaxy Home is more of a premium product which will take on the likes of the Apple HomePod. This new Bixby speaker will be more competitive against the Amazon Echos of the world.

Samsung is yet to acknowledge the second Bixby speaker, though. It hasn’t even confirmed the pricing for the Galaxy Home. Hopefully, it will be more forthcoming with the information in the near future.

Galaxy S10 camera comes with a built-in Instagram mode

Samsung launched the Galaxy S10 lineup at its Unpacked event in San Francisco today. It comes in four different models, including a 5G variant with beefed-up specs. While all of them pack powerful cameras, the specifications are different on each variant. To fully exploit the capabilities of these shooters, Samsung has introduced many new camera-focused features – one of which is a built-in Instagram mode in the native camera app.

Adam Mosseri, Head of Product at Instagram, took the stage at the Galaxy Unpacked event to show and talk about the new Instagram mode. The mode lets users capture and upload photos and videos directly to their Instagram stories from the Galaxy S10’s native camera app. It includes all the usual Instagram editing tools, filters, stickers, hashtags, text effects, and more to offer an easy and satisfying Instagram experience without leaving the native camera app. Samsung claims it is the “best Instagram experience on a smartphone.” Demonstrating the new mode, Adam Mosseri took a selfie with Samsung’s mobile chief, DJ Koh, at the event and uploaded it to Instagram without leaving the camera app.

While it may not be a major technical advancement like the Galaxy Fold, it still has immense potential to appeal to the younger generation. Samsung is also opening up its camera SDK to other partners to bring similar experiences to the native camera app. It also enables developers to bring Samsung camera prowess to third-party apps. What this essentially means is that pictures taken in third-party apps can now be as good as the ones taken with the native app. Snapchat, Snow, and Lime have been announced as the first wave of partners to utilize the new SDK.

Check out Samsung’s first TV ad for the Galaxy S10

With the Galaxy S10 announcement out of the way, Samsung can now get down to the business of selling its new flagship smartphone. You will start to experience the media blitz for the Galaxy S10 lineup from today and Samsung has already put up its first official TV ad for the new flagship.

The ads will highlight some of the best features of the new lineup. The Galaxy S10 series includes four models – the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+ and the Galaxy S10 5G. The latter will be exclusive to Verizon in the United States initially.

Samsung kicked off today’s proceedings at the Galaxy Unpacked event by showing off the device that everybody was most excited for. The Galaxy Fold is now official. It’s the company’s first foldable smartphone and the official TVC is up for that as well.

The company has released several hands-on videos for the Galaxy S10 as well to explain some of the new features that are included in the flagship. The official Galaxy S10 TV ad is a more concise explanation of all that’s new with the Galaxy S10 series. Do check it out below and let us know what you think about it.

PSA: Galaxy S10 doesn’t have a notification LED

The Galaxy S10 lineup brings slimmer bezels with the Infinity-O displays, which puts the front cameras in a hole cut into the display, and that has brought a disadvantage many of us may not like. Yes, as the title revealed, the Galaxy S10 doesn’t not have a notification LED. The reason is simple: lesser space because of the Infinity-O display, although the rest of the sensors we expect are present on the device.

But there’s no alternative to a notification LED, as some would say, so users will have to make do with Always On Display to keep a track of notifications and alerts. Thankfully, One UI/Android Pie has an option that allows you tap the screen to show the Always On Display screen for 30 seconds, so you don’t have to have it always enabled if you are worried about wasting battery life. Hopefully, Samsung will be able to find a solution to this and introduce it with the Galaxy Note 10 or Galaxy S11, but at this moment it’s something you might want to take into account if you’re looking to buy a Galaxy S10.

For more details on the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+, check out our hands-on experience. For all the coverage on Samsung’s Unpacked event, go here.

Galaxy S10 5G will initially be available from Verizon exclusively

It was reported a few weeks ago that Samsung’s Galaxy S10 5G would initially be exclusive to Verizon Wireless in the United States. Verizon is one of the four large mobile networks in the United States that’s in the process of rolling out its commercial 5G network. The company officially confirmed its Galaxy S10 5G today and also confirmed exclusivity for Verizon Wireless.

That’s not to say that the 5G variant of Samsung’s latest flagship will not be available from any other carrier in the United States. It will arrive on the likes of AT&T and T-Mobile in due course but Verizon gets dibs on it.

Galaxy S10 5G will be a Verizon exclusive initially

Commerical 5G networks will be going live in a handful of markets across the globe. Carriers in Samsung’s home country of South Korea have their networks ready as well. It goes without saying that this device will be available in South Korea as well.

It obviously makes no sense for Samsung to offer the device in markets where no 5G networks exist. Therefore, the Galaxy S10 5G may only be offered in markets like the United States and South Korea initially. We will see its availability expand as more 5G networks go live across the globe. The Galaxy S10 5G has some major differences compared to the Galaxy S10+, including the fact that it does not have a microSD card slot.

Verizon hasn’t confirmed the pricing and precise availability information for the device as yet. Samsung has only said that it will be available from the country’s largest network “in the first half of 2019.”

Does the Galaxy S10 have a headphone jack?

It’s a question that Samsung fans have been asking for quite some time. There were rumors that Samsung might ditch the standard 3.5mm headphone jack with the Galaxy S10. It might do that at some point in the future, but the answer to the question “Does the Galaxy S10 have a headphone jack?” is a resounding yes.

Samsung has decided against removing the 3.5mm headphone jack from the Galaxy S10. This holds true for all four variants. The new flagship lineup includes the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+ and the 5G Galaxy S10. All four variants of the new flagship feature a headphone jack.

Does the Galaxy S10 have a headphone jack?

Since the Galaxy S10 comes with a headphone jack, there’s no need for a dongle in the box for the headphones. Samsung ships AKG-tuned wired earphones with all models of the Galaxy S10. Pre-order customers in certain markets were also able to get the new Galaxy Buds as a gift.

So if you were wondering does the Galaxy S10 have a headphone jack, you need not worry anymore. You can go ahead and pick up the new flagship from Samsung if that was previously a dealbreaker. There’s no saying if Samsung will retain it for the Galaxy S10’s successor, but that’s a debate for another time.

Watch Samsung’s beautiful TV commercial for its foldable phone

Samsung has properly unveiled its foldable smartphone to the world at last, giving us a look at the device and telling us when it goes on sale and how much it will cost. Samsung started off today’s Unpacked 2019 with an introduction of the Galaxy Fold, and it turns out that introduction is also the first TV commercial the company will be releasing to whet everyone’s appetite.

And it’s a beautiful video with a song that may end up making some long-time fans a bit emotional. The Galaxy Fold looks stunning, especially when it’s in the phone form, and Samsung says the device is tested for hundreds of thousands of folds. It is priced at $1,980, which is quite impressive considering it’s an entirely new form factor and the first generation of Samsung’s foldable device. Remember, the Galaxy S10+ starts at $999, so $1,980 for the Galaxy Fold doesn’t sound too high, not to us anyway.

PSA: The 5G Galaxy S10 does not have a microSD slot

You can get the Galaxy S10+ with up to 1 terabyte of storage. That’s laptop-class storage “without the laptop,” as Samsung boasted on stage during the Galaxy Unpacked event today. Samsung also unveiled the 5G variant of the Galaxy S10 today.

This device does have some significant differences compared to the Galaxy S10+ including the fact that it does not have a microSD card slot. You can’t externally expand storage on the 5G variant of Samsung’s latest flagship.

The 5G Galaxy S10 has the largest display of the bunch, a 6.7-inch Infinity-O panel with an in-display fingerprint sensor. It even has a quad camera system at the back with a 3D Depth Camera being the additional lens. The other three are the same as the Galaxy S10+.

There’s only going to be one configuration available for the Galaxy S10 with 5G. It will have 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. You’ll have to make do with that much storage even though you can get four times as much on the Galaxy S10+. The 5G variant is limited to 256GB of internal storage. To top it off, it also has support for a single SIM card. You could always opt for cloud storage services for additional storage but microSD cards are firmly out of the question.

Samsung has sold over 2 billion Galaxy smartphones in under ten years

The Galaxy S10 is Samsung’s 10th anniversary flagship. The Korean giant has been making some pretty great smartphones over the past decade. Despite challenges, it remains the top smartphone vendor in the globe. The company has sold a staggering amount of smartphones over the past decade.

Samsung Mobile CEO DJ Koh revealed during the company’s Unpacked event today that Samsung has sold more than 2 billion Galaxy smartphones since 2010. That’s without a doubt an incredible achievement.

It’s pertinent to mention here that Koh didn’t elaborate which product lines are included in that figure. One can safely assume that the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note lineups are included. Samsung also sends a plethora of devices under the Galaxy A, Galaxy C, Galaxy J and other brands some of which tend to perform better than others.

That being said, this is without a doubt an incredible achievement for Samsung. The company took time to highlight it at the event where it’s showing off a glimpse of what it intends to do in the coming decade. One can say that it has hit the ground running with the Galaxy Fold, Samsung’s first and much-awaited foldable smartphone. It certainly makes Samsung fans very excited to see what the company has to deliver in the future.

Galaxy S10 5G will sport 6.7-inch display, quad rear camera, 25W charging

Samsung hasn’t really kept its plans to embrace 5G connectivity on its 2019 flagships a secret, and at the Unpacked event in New York, the company offered some details on the 5G Galaxy S10 model. Samsung is calling it Galaxy S10 5G, and its features match what we have heard in all the leaks and rumors for the most part.

The Galaxy S10 5G will have a 6.7-inch Infinity-O display, with an in-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. It will sport four rear cameras. The fourth camera is a 3D Depth Camera that will make it possible to shoot Live Focus (bokeh) videos and enable augmented reality experiences (like being able to measure the length of an object by pointing the camera at it). The other three are the same as the Galaxy S10+: 12MP Dual Aperture primary, 12MP telephoto, and 16MP ultra-wide sensors. The front also gets the same 3D depth camera in addition to a 10MP regular selfie snapper.

The 5G model is powered by Snapdragon 855 and gets a 4,500 mAh battery with faster wired charging. The Galaxy S10 5G will support 25W charging through the USB Power Delivery 3.0 standard, not just the 15W charging of the regular Galaxy S10 models or existing flagships. However, the 5G model loses out on a microSD slot. Samsung will sell it in only one configuration: 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It will also just have a single SIM slot.

Of course, the 5G model will have network speeds that are unheard of, at least in markets where 5G networks are set to go live this year. Samsung isn’t telling us pricing or release date information for the Galaxy S10 5G, but we should see those juicy details make an appearance as we approach the launch of 5G networks in countries like the US and South Korea.

Galaxy S10’s front camera has Dual Pixel autofocus!

Plenty of leaks and rumors had prepared us for what we can expect from the Galaxy S10 as far as specs and features are concerned, and Samsung’s official announcement has confirmed an interesting feature for the front camera. The Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+ come with Dual Pixel autofocus for the front camera, bringing the biggest upgrade yet to the selfie game on Samsung flagships.

Samsung introduced autofocus to the front camera with the Galaxy S8, but that had been a software-based thing. It worked well enough, but it was no match for actual hardware-based autofocus that you see on rear cameras on phones. Dual Pixel phase detection technology was introduced to the Galaxy lineup with the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, and while at the time it was only used in DSLRs, it’s quite common in the smartphone world in general these days.

You can get the technical details on how Dual Pixel technology works on Canon’s site here, but simply put, Dual Pixel autofocus is one of the best autofocus techniques out there, as it allows each of the million pixels in the camera to help with focusing. Dual Pixel autofocus is extremely fast, and that should mean the Galaxy S10 will be able to focus on your face much faster than we have seen any previous Samsung phone. Along with the increased megapixel count (10MP), the S10 trio should be considerably better than previous Galaxy flagships as far as taking selfies is concerned.

The entire lineup has an Infinity-O display which cuts a precise hole in the active display area for the front camera. Samsung says that this is the first implementation of this technology on an AMOLED panel. The Galaxy S10’s Dynamic AMOLED display also has support for HDR10+.

Other features highlighted in these Galaxy S10 hands-on videos include Wireless PowerShare which enables users to reverse wireless charge phones and wearable devices using their Galaxy S10. All of the videos have been pasted below so you can check them out easily.

Samsung Galaxy S10 hands-on: Tenth-anniversary flagship done right?

After a long time, Samsung has switched up the location for the unveiling of its newest Galaxy S flagship. This year, Samsung chose San Francisco, with its biggest rival Apple in the backyard, for the Unpacked event. We flew to San Francisco and got the chance to play around with the newly announced Galaxy S10 lineup. Does it beat our expectations and rise beyond what all the leaks made it out to be? Let’s find out!

Galaxy S10 hands-on: Design

Galaxy S10 hands-on

Our initial impressions based on leaked photos was that the Galaxy S10 lineup was just a Galaxy S9 with smaller bezels. Well, we have to say we were too quick to jump to conclusions, as the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+ are more than that. It feels a lot more premium compared to the Galaxy S9, and you can simply feel the metal and glass working their magic. The camera hump on the back looks like it belongs as well.

Galaxy S10 hands-on

Samsung has also put the fingerprint sensor under the display on the Galaxy S10 and S10+, and it works quite great and feels nice to use, with some fun animations to go along with it. The Galaxy S10e has the fingerprint reader embedded into the power button on the side, similar to the Galaxy A7 (2018). We like the placement of the sensor on the S10e, though. Existing features, such as a 3.5mm headphone jack and the Bixby, volume, and power keys, have been left as is.

Galaxy S10 hands-on

We moved on to the ceramic version of the Galaxy S10+ once we were done with the regular models, and we have to say the ceramic versions feels even better in hand, although that is to be expected. We tried both the white and black ceramic models, and the former simply stole our hearts. In fact, everyone in attendance in the hands-on area seemed to like it, and Samsung didn’t hold back with advertising the white ceramic model, either.

Infinity-O displays

The Galaxy S10’s Infinity-O displays are perhaps the biggest change we see on Samsung’s tenth-anniversary flagship. The Infinity-O display was unveiled at Samsung’s developer conference last year and was seen on the Galaxy A8s in China, and it’s the branding for every screen that has a hole in it for the front camera. It’s designed to make you feel like the device has no notch, but with a slight twist.

Galaxy S10 hands-on

Samsung is proud of what it has achieved with the Galaxy S10 displays and considers them the best it has made yet. The display has HDR10+ support, can go up to 1200 nits of peak brightness, and comes with TUV Rheinland certification, which means it can reduce blue light by 42 percent without sacrificing image quality. Of course, what matters to you and us is how the Galaxy S10 display performs in real life. Is that camera hole really better than a notch? Well, that’s an opinion that will vary from person to person, but we have to say it does seem like a better solution to a notch.

We liked the Galaxy S10 and S10e in particular; it will take some time for us to warm up to the Galaxy S10+’ dual cutout. Also, all three Galaxy S10s miss out on a notification LED because of lack of space on the display. You don’t get to hard press the area around the home button to wake up the screen on the S10 and S10+, either, as the haptic feedback and pressure points have been moved up for the in-display fingerprint sensor.

Overall, we believe Samsung’s new displays look beautiful, and as with previous flagships, Samsung will offer you the option to tune the display to your liking from the display settings.

Interface

Back in November last year, Samsung introduced One UI, its vision for the future of smartphone user interfaces. One UI’s main goal is to make phones easier to use with one hand, and we have already seen the new interface on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 with the Pie update. If you want to know more about One UI and its features, you can check out this link. As far as the Galaxy S10 is concerned, Samsung hasn’t changed too much for the new flagships. Some settings look different, but overall, it all looks the same, which is good since it brings consistency across all devices.

One thing Samsung did change – or upgrade, to put more precisely – is the One UI version. The Galaxy S10 trio run One UI 1.1, and the major addition on the newer version is Samsung’s own version of Android’s Digital Wellbeing feature. Wellbeing is basically designed to enable you to reduce your smartphone addiction. It tells you how long you open some apps and lets you put a timer to remind you to stop using a particular app. It can also turn the screen to grayscale after a while to demotivate you from using the phone. Of course, it’s up to you if you want Digital Wellbeing to help you out, as it’s an optional feature.

So what else is new on the software front? Well, you can set the phone to change its wallpaper every time you unlock the device. There’s a new gaming option for Dolby Atmos, although we have seen that on the Galaxy Note 9 as well. It will also come to other devices with Dolby Atmos, such as the Galaxy S9. And as an extension of the Adaptive Battery feature, the Galaxy S10 will attempt to keep your favorite apps in memory ahead of time for faster opening times.

Camera

With the Galaxy S10 lineup, Samsung wanted to have powerful cameras. The front camera on all three models is now a 10MP sensor with Dual Pixel autofocus and the ability to record 4K videos. The S10+ gets a second camera at the front. It’s an 8MP RGB depth sensor for nicer portrait pictures. On the back, you will see two cameras on the Galaxy S10e. The first is the same 12MP Dual Aperture sensor from the Galaxy S9 while the second is an ultra-wide camera with a 123-degree field of view and 16-megapixel resolution. The Galaxy S10 and S10e have three rear cameras: The two from the S10e and a telephoto 12MP lens like the Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S9, and Galaxy Note 9.

We couldn’t test the camera much, but Samsung it has added some new features. There are ten new scenes for the Scene Optimizer feature, and the Galaxy S10 will tell you how to create the best picture depending on the subject you’re trying to capture as part of its AI-enhanced capabilities. In the advanced menu, you can find the option to record HDR10+ video, a first for any smartphone. However, 8K video recording isn’t available, most likely because the Snapdragon 855 doesn’t support it. That could be disappointing for those who bought/will buy a brand new 8K TV from Samsung, but it probably won’t matter to anyone else.

Battery

The Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+ are powered by 3,100 mAh, 3,400 mAh, and 4,100 mAh batteries. Naturally, we couldn’t test battery life, but we did get to test Samsung’s new Wireless PowerShare feature. PowerShare is reverse wireless charging, which means you can use your Galaxy S10 to charge other devices that support wireless charging. It’s going to be especially useful for charging your wearables, like the new Galaxy Watch Active or Galaxy Buds earbuds.

Reverse wireless charging is not a new feature. Huawei has already done it on one of its phones, but it’s nice to see Samsung learning from the competition instead of denying new ideas coming from other manufacturers. Wireless PowerShare works quite well, but how helpful it will be will depend on the user. One thing is for sure: You’d be better off not telling friends addicted to Pokemon Go or PUBG about it if they have a phone with wireless charging support, or you might be relegated to offering them a charge when they need it.

Samsung has also improved fast wireless charging speeds for the Galaxy S10 itself. However, we have to say we’re disappointed that Samsung hasn’t increased the wired charging speeds on the Galaxy S10 lineup. The wired fast charge speeds are still stuck at 15 watts, while the competition has moved on to considerably faster solutions. The Galaxy S10 5G will come with 25W charging, but it would have been nice to see it on the regular S10s as well.

Conclusion

So here’s a revelation on our part that may surprise you: The Galaxy S10e was our favorite of the three models, at least until we had played with the ceramic version of the Galaxy S10+. We are quite happy to see a smaller flagship phone with a flat display. The look and feel of the S10e was unexpectedly nice, and we can see a lot of consumers being attracted by the Galaxy S10e.

And the entire Galaxy S10 lineup looks great overall. That Infinity-O display makes the phones feel really premium by making it seem like there’s an endless screen on them, and the ceramic Galaxy S10+ is just stunning to behold. We can see why Samsung is so proud of the Galaxy S10 series, and we can’t wait to get one of these beauties for ourselves. The Galaxy S10 is a great follow up to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 and our first impressions are overwhelmingly positive.

Look forward to our full review of the Galaxy S10 lineup in March or early April!
