Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2019) gets updated to Android 11

Another day, another update from Samsung. The South Korean firm has released the Android 11 update to the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2019) in a few markets, and the update brings a more recent version of the Android security patch. This could be the last major Android OS update for the tablet which was released in 2019 with Android 9 onboard.

The LTE variant of the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (SM-T295) has started receiving the Android 11-based One UI Core 3.1 update in Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Italy, Kazakhstan, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and the UK. The latest update, which has firmware version T295XXU4CUF7, includes the May 2021 security patch as well. This new software version brings a refreshed UI design, chat bubbles, a conversations section in the notifications area, a dedicated media playback widget, and better performance.

The update also includes more lockscreen widgets and options and a redesigned Device Care menu. All the stock apps, including Samsung Internet and Samsung Keyboard, have been improved as well. To improve the privacy and security of the device, the new software version includes one-time permissions, auto permissions reset, and better parental controls.

If you are a Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2019) user in any of the countries mentioned above, you can either wait for the OTA (Over The Air) update to arrive or check for the update manually by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. You can also download the latest firmware file from our database and flash it manually.

Samsung basically confirmed that your Galaxy Watch 3 is now outdated

Samsung has provided a first look of One UI Watch today. It’s the custom interface that will be slapped on top of the new unified Wear platform that it has built for smartwatches with Google. Yes, the platform is Android-based. Tizen will no longer power Samsung’s smartwatches.

Ever since this collaboration with Google was announced, existing Galaxy Watch owners have been wondering whether they’ll get an update to this platform. Samsung has been tight-lipped on the matter but it has basically just confirmed what you were fearing.

No Android for you, Galaxy Watch 3

Samsung confirmed during its MWC 2021 virtual event today that it will provide “up to 3 years of software updates” to Tizen-based smartwatches. This includes everything from your Galaxy Watch Active to the Galaxy Watch 3.

This just confirms that the company has no plans to upgrade existing watches to the new Wear platform, even if the hardware supports it. Galaxy Watch 3 owners will be particularly bothered by this. Their smartwatch is basically outdated less than a year since it was released.

We’ve discussed before that at least the Galaxy Watch 3 should be upgraded to the new platform. However, it seems that this is something Google might be against. The company is also reportedly not allowing existing Wear OS smartwatches to be upgraded.

Samsung’s Tizen smartwatches are equipped with many great features. The company could add some additional features to these devices down the line. However, they will miss out on the great improvements that the new unified program brings, including support for Android apps.

This is certainly not an ideal situation but it is what it is. Those who want to take advantage of this new platform will have to buy a new Galaxy smartwatch. Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Watch 4 at its next Unpacked event, so it won’t be long before one is available.

Samsung confirms S Pen is coming to more devices… again

Samsung has confirmed once again that it is bringing the S Pen to more flagship Galaxy smartphones in the future. This is not the first time that the company has made this announcement. The South Korean firm had initially unveiled its plan for the expansion of S Pen earlier this year during the launch of the Galaxy S21 series.

The S Pen, which was earlier limited to the Galaxy Note series and some Galaxy Tab models, expanded to the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Now, the company says that it will bring S Pen compatibility to more high-end Galaxy smartphones, but it did not confirm the names of those devices. It was revealed a few days ago that the Galaxy Z Fold 3, which is expected to be unveiled in August 2021 during the company’s next Unpacked event, will come with S Pen compatibility as well. However, it won’t feature a dedicated silo to store the S Pen, which means that you will have to buy a separate case to store the stylus.

Since Samsung has confirmed that it won’t launch a new Galaxy Note series device this year, S Pen lovers can look forward to the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The device is expected to feature a 6.23-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O cover display and a 7.55-inch foldable Super AMOLED display, and both screens feature a 120Hz refresh rate. It could use the Snapdragon 888+ processor that was announced earlier today.

If you are an S Pen fan, are you looking forward to the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 3? Let us know in the comments section below.

Samsung One UI Watch first look raises expectations for Galaxy Watch 4

It was first rumored earlier this year that Samsung will ditch Tizen for its smartwatches. The company was expected to start using Android instead. This would have been a significant change since Samsung ditched Android for Tizen in the first place.

Samsung confirmed this during Google I/O 2021. It has collaborated with Google on a new unified platform called Wear. This platform will be used by Samsung and all other OEMs that make Android smartwatches. Samsung gets to slap its custom UI on this new platform and the company provided the first look of its new One UI Watch today.

Here’s your first look at the One UI Watch

Samsung has provided a glimpse of One UI Watch during its virtual MWC 2021 press event today. The company also confirmed that its upcoming Galaxy Watch will be the first device to come with this new interface. That smartwatch is likely going to be launched as the Galaxy Watch 4.

One UI Watch was developed to enable deeper integration between your Samsung Galaxy smartwatch and smartphone. So when you install a watch-compatible app like Spotify on your smartphone, its smartwatch version will be automatically downloaded on your watch.

If you customize the clock on your phone to show time in different cities then this will automatically reflect on your smartwatch as well. Any calls and messages blocked from the Galaxy Watch will also be blocked on the smartphone. These may seem like minor improvements but they will significantly improve the user experience.

The biggest benefit that this Android-based unified platform provides Samsung is access to Google Play. New Galaxy Watch users will be able to download popular third-party apps that were previously unavailable for Tizen, including popular health tracking apps. Google’s native apps will also be available so users can get the benefit of Google Maps, YouTube Music and Messages.

Samsung is launching an improved watch face design tool that will make it easier for designers to create new watch faces. Android developers will be able to create watch faces for One UI Watch later this year as well. Samsung has confirmed that its new Galaxy Watch will be the first to feature One UI Watch, adding that it will be unveiled at Samsung’s Unpacked event “later this summer.”

The company hasn’t showcased all of the visual improvements that have been made to One UI Watch. It’s obviously keeping that for the Unpacked event. Today’s first look only raises expectations for the Galaxy Watch 4. It’s going to be unlike any other smartwatch yet from Samsung.

Android 12 will bring Google Discover redesign

Google is set to remodel the Google Discover feed in Android 12 with a new look and features. XDA Developers stumbled upon the new UI, which includes a ‘News Showcase’ feature. Google claims that it will feature highlighted content from cherry-picked creators. It uses your existing browsing patterns as a yardstick. However, only a handful of news sources will be available initially, as the feature is still being tested. Its main objective is to de-clutter the news feed by only highlighting stories pertinent to your interests.

Samsung tried to better integrate Google Discover into its software via One UI 3.1. However, only devices that ship with One UI 3.1 out of the box, such as the Galaxy S21 series and the Galaxy A32 5G, support the feature. Smartphones that got One UI 3.1 as a software update cannot enable it and are restricted to Samsung Free. The only workaround at the moment seems to involve the use of third-party launchers.

If you happen to own a Samsung smartphone that launched One UI 3.1, follow these instructions to show the Google Discover Feed on your home screen. One can only hope that Samsung lets users of all devices — whether they launched running One UI 3.1 or not — to choose between Samsung Free and Google Discover on One UI 4.0. Google and Samsung seem to have set their differences aside, at least when it comes to smartwatches, so we should continue to see tighter and tighter integration of Google products into One UI.

Galaxy M10s gets Android 11 update two months before second birthday

If you needed any more proof that Samsung is unbeatable in Android land when it comes to software updates, look no further than the arrival of the Android 11 update for yet another low-budget Galaxy smartphone. The Galaxy M10s is now receiving its second major Android OS and One UI upgrade, two months before it’s set to turn two. This is a phone that cost $130 at launch, showing how Samsung’s excellent software support covers both ultra-high-end and ultra-affordable devices.

As you would expect, One UI 3 is accompanying the Android 11 update for the Galaxy M10s – One UI 3.1, to be precise. The June 2021 security patch, which is the latest available for all Galaxy devices right now, is bundled as well. Android 11 brings a slightly refreshed user interface and updated Samsung apps, along with other features such as one-time permissions, the ability to remove location data from images before sharing them, improved Digital Wellbeing and parental controls, and dedicated media playback widget in the notification shade.

The update is rolling out in India, the only market where Samsung released the M10s, and carries firmware version M107FXXU4CUF5. You can download it over the air right away by opening the phone’s Settings app, selecting Software update, and tapping Download and install. Alternatively, the Android 11 firmware is waiting for you in our archives and can be used to upgrade your Galaxy M10s using a Windows PC once you’ve taken the necessary precaution of backing up all your important data.

iPhone 13 plays catch-up with Samsung with this new camera feature

Renowned Apple insider Ming-Chi Kuo says (via MacRumors) that the iPhone could finally get autofocus support on the ultra-wide camera with the iPhone 13. However, only the high-end iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will get the feature. This will put the iPhone 13’s camera subsystem somewhat on par with the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, which happened to be the first-ever Samsung device to include the feature. Interestingly enough, the lower-specced Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ do not support it.

Autofocus on an ultra-wide lens is still somewhat of a high-end feature reserved for flagship smartphones. Most OEMs, Samsung included, chose to neglect the feature for the longest time. Thankfully, most modern-day flagship smartphones include it. Our Galaxy S21 Ultra review determined that the ultra-wide lens’ autofocus support greatly enhanced the visual fidelity of captured images. It also doubled up as an excellent macro lens for close-up shots.

Of course, even Samsung wasn’t the first smartphone OEM to add autofocus support to its ultra-wide camera. The earliest smartphone we could find with the functionality enabled was the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, which was launched all the way back in 2018. Then again, Huawei has always remained ahead of the pack when it comes to high-end camera features. The real question is: Will all three Galaxy S22 phones ship with autofocus on their ultra-wide lenses? Based on what little we know about the matter so far, it’s hard to tell.

Just how important are smartphone charging speeds for you?

Much like the megapixel race which saw smartphone manufacturers make the absolute megapixel count a marketing tactic, we’ve seen a similar rat race for charging speeds over the past few years. Many OEMs, particularly Chinese, have now made charging speeds their preferred marketing gimmick.

The question remains, though, does that make any difference to the end user? Do you, as a customer, consider charging speeds to be a dealbreaker? There’s a lot that can drive the decision to spend money on a smartphone. For many, charging speeds might not even be a consideration.

Samsung never got sucked into this charging speed rat race. It was fine with the flagship Galaxy smartphones offering 15W fast charging. It later introduced 25W ‘super fast charging’ in 2019. We tested just how fast Samsung’s 25W super fast charging technology is and found a noticeable improvement.

The company kicked things up a notch with the Galaxy Note 10+ as it added support for 45W charging. It never shipped this charger in the box so customers who wanted the extra speed had to spend extra money. It wasn’t much speed to begin with. Tests showed that the time gained by using the 45W charger on the Galaxy Note 10+ compared to the 25W was just about 8 minutes.

While the Galaxy S20 Ultra supported 45W charging, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra didn’t. This suggested that not many customers were willing to spend extra money to get the 45W due to the negligible speed difference. So Samsung saw no reason to retain support. Sure enough, the Galaxy S21 Ultra charging speed also maxed out at 25W.

Samsung did this at a time when its Chinese competitors were showing off 100W charging speeds and trying to make that a talking point. Be that as it may, Samsung doesn’t seem to be having any problem selling smartphones that don’t offer these outrageous speeds.

For me personally, of all the things that could sway my decision when buying a phone, be it the display technology, chipset, RAM, storage, camera setup, things that actually impact the user experience in a major way, charging speeds won’t matter beyond a point. Is that the same for you? Vote below and share your thoughts with us in the comments.

Galaxy A30 seemingly skipping the May 2021 update, June patch incoming

The Galaxy A30 has been a bit behind schedule on the security update front ever since it started receiving Android 11-based One UI 3.1 last month. That particular release came out with the April 1st patch level in tow, and it would now seem the device is skipping the May release altogether. Namely, the June 2021 security update has just started rolling out in South Korea, identified by PDA version A305NKSU5CUF2.

As always, if you’re feeling particularly impatient to get your hands on the June 2021 security update for your Galaxy A30, you don’t necessarily have to resort to waiting for the update to reach you on its own. The most straightforward way to try speeding things up a bit is to go to Settings > Software update > Download and install. Right now, this is most likely to work if you’re located in South Korea, but keep an eye out for our coverage in the days ahead to know when this security update expands its reaches.

What patch level are you currently running?

Last but not least, our firmware archives stand ready and at your disposal; simply download the full system images for your Galaxy A30 and flash them to the device manually. A word of warning for those who opt to pursue the manual flashing path: do not forget to back up your data, no matter how many times you’ve done this song and firmware-flashing dance.

As for the June 1st security patch level, it has been rolling out the world over for a about a month now, give or take. During this period, Samsung started 151 other deployments across 37 countries, including the one at hand. Right now, we’re eagerly waiting for the July update to land and hopefully the Galaxy A30 gets it sooner rather than later.

The Snapdragon 888+ is here, but will it power a Samsung phone?

Qualcomm has finally unveiled the Snapdragon 888+ 5G mobile chipset. The unveiling was done during the first day of the MWC (Mobile World Congress) Barcelona 2021 event. The new processor is a slightly higher binned version of the Snapdragon 888 processor, which was launched earlier this year, and comes with higher clock speeds.

The Snapdragon 888+ is still made using Samsung Foundry’s 5nm LPE process. It features an octa-core CPU, featuring a Cortex-X1 core clocked at 1.995GHz instead of the Snapdragon 888’s 2.84GHz clock speed. That’s a 5% improvement in the clock speed of the prime CPU core. The new chipset keeps the three Cortex-A78 CPU cores at 2.42GHz and four Cortex-A55 CPU cores at 1.8GHz, similar to the Snapdragon 888.

Snapdragon 888+ doesn’t bring any improvement in graphics performance over the Snapdragon 888

Unlike previous years where Qualcomm’s mid-year flagship refresh came with a boost in the GPU’s clock speed, the Snapdragon 888+’s Adreno 660 GPU is still running at the same clock speed (840MHz) as that of the Snapdragon 888. So, there won’t be any improvement in gaming performance.

The Snapdragon 888+ comes with an upgrade in AI performance: 32 TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second) across the CPU, GPU, Tensor cores, and HVX). In comparison, the vanilla Snapdragon 888 has 26 TOPS of AI performance. The new chipset is compatible with LPDDR5 quad-channel RAM at 3200MHz and a memory bandwidth of 51.2Gbps.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+ 5G Specifications Features

The Spectra 580 ISP can process image feeds from three different camera sensors simultaneously. It can capture 4K 60fps videos and 64MP still photos at the same time. It can also record 8K 30fps videos and 4K 120fps slow-motion videos. The Snapdragon 888+ can decode and encode Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG videos.

It comes integrated with the Snapdragon X60 5G modem that supports mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G networks. When it combines the mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G networks, it can theoretically reach maximum download speeds of up to 7.5Gbps and upload speeds of up to 3Gbps.

Will Samsung launch Galaxy phones powered by the Snapdragon 888+ processor?

ASUS, Honor, Vivo, and Xiaomi have announced that they will launch smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 888+ processor later this year, but Samsung has not made any such promises. While the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 are expected to use the Snapdragon 888+ processor, the Galaxy S21 FE might not end up using it.

Samsung’s first Snapdragon 778G phone could be the Galaxy M52 5G

Samsung has launched multiple mid-range smartphones over the past few months, and it turns out, the company isn’t done with them yet. The South Korean smartphone giant appears to be working on one more mid-range device that hasn’t been made official, and it could be launched later this year.

A new Galaxy smartphone with model number SM-M526BR has appeared in Geekbench’s database for the first time. Going by its model number, Samsung could call this device Galaxy M52 5G. The phone, which appears to be running Android 11, has scored 777 points in Geekbench 5.1’s single-core CPU test and 2,868 points in the multi-core CPU test.

Interestingly, the motherboard of the device is termed ‘Lahaina,’ which is the codename that appears in phones with the Snapdragon 888 processor. We thought that the M52 5G will feature a Snapdragon 888 processor, but when we dug deeper, we found that the identifier, CPU frequencies, and the GPU (Adreno 642L) of the processor match with the Snapdragon 778G, which makes all of this a bit confusing.

The Snapdragon 778G is not Qualcomm’s flagship chipset, but it is still a proper high-end processor built using TSMC’s 6nm process. It features one Cortex-A78 CPU core clocked at 2.4GHz, three Cortex-A78 CPU cores clocked at 2.2GHz, and four Cortex-A55 CPU cores clocked at 1.9GHz. It uses the Adreno 642L GPU that is capable of pushing Full HD+ 144Hz displays with HDR10+ and running AAA gaming titles at high refresh rates.

A few days ago, the HONOR 50 Pro, which features the Snapdragon 778G processor, was leaked with the mention of ‘Lahaina’ as its motherboard. So, it is possible that the Galaxy M52 5G actually uses a Snapdragon 778G processor and 6GB RAM. Whatever the case is, we should know more about this interesting smartphone over the next few weeks.

Samsung on track to break another record this year

It seems that breaking records comes naturally to Samsung. Then again, the company does make some great high quality products that customers are happy to spend their money on. This increases demand for its products and results in record high sales.

Samsung is the world’s largest TV vendor. It invests heavily in improving its display panel technology to hold on to that top spot. The company’s latest high-end TV series is on track to post record sales this year.

Pent-up demand driving record sales of Samsung TVs

Samsung has sold over 4 million units of its QLED TVs in the first half of this year. It’s closer now than ever before to achieve the record of 10 million units sold per year for the first time. Samsung’s 2021 NEO QLED TV series is selling particularly well in the company’s home country of South Korea.

An electronics industry source claims that this year’s flagship TV lineup is selling twice as fast as last year’s lineup. If this trend continues and Samsung sees sustained sales momentum in other countries, Samsung will easily achieve the record of 10 million units sold within the year.

This will be a big record, especially when you consider that the QLED TVs have sold over 20 million units combined since they were first introduced in 2017. Samsung is now on track to achieve 50% of that with just one flagship TV series in one year.

The current market dynamics are working in Samsung’s favor. The COVID19 pandemic brought an increase in demand for TVs as people across the globe were confined to their homes. Other TV manufacturers have been facing issues meeting demand due to the semiconductor shortage. However, Samsung has kept its supply chain situation under control, but it does fear that a prolonged shortage could end up affecting TV sales in the long run.

This Galaxy S22 Ultra concept is an absolute stunner

We are still eight months away from the possible Galaxy S22 launch, but some features and rumors of the upcoming flagship smartphones have already started hitting the internet. Now, fan-made renders of the Galaxy S22 Ultra have been published, showcasing a stunning design and a huge camera sensor on the rear.

Galaxy S22 Ultra render images published by LetsGoDigital showcase how Samsung could implement a bigger quad-camera setup on the rear and thin down the bezels around the screen even further. Since the rumors of the Galaxy S22 Ultra featuring an under-display selfie camera have been quashed already, these renders showcase a Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with extremely thin bezels and rounded corners. There is S Pen compatibility, too, but no dedicated silo for it.

Galaxy S22 Ultra concept renders show a giant 200MP Olympus camera sensor

There have been rumors of Samsung collaborating with Olympus on the camera part for its future Galaxy flagships, and this render takes that into consideration. On the rear, there appears to be a giant 200MP Olympus camera sensor, an ultrawide camera, a telephoto camera, a continuous zoom periscope camera, and laser autofocus. The phone’s renders are showcased in five colors: black, blue, green, red, and white.

Another interesting aspect seen in these Galaxy S22 Ultra renders is an active cooling fan inside to keep the Exynos 2200’s temperature in check even during heavy tasks like gaming. However, we don’t think Samsung will implement that feature in the Galaxy S22 Ultra. There is a USB Type-C port on the bottom but no 3.5mm headphone jack. The whole design seems to be largely inspired by the Galaxy S21 Ultra but accommodates a bigger camera and has thinner bezels.

Is Samsung bringing the Snapdragon 888 to a mid-range phone soon?

In what could be the most interesting bit of news this month, it looks like Samsung could be working on bringing this year’s top-of-the-line Snapdragon processor to a mid-range phone. We’ve known for a few weeks that Samsung is working on a Galaxy M52 5G, and a device with a model number (SM-M526BR) that’s likely to belong to the M52 5G has now shown up on the Geekbench database, seemingly with the Snapdragon 888 chipset under the hood.

Or, well, an as-yet-unannounced variant of the Snapdragon 888, as the processor specs shown in the phone’s benchmark listing don’t match those of the Snapdragon 888. Geekbench says the tested device had two quad-core clusters, while the Snapdragon 888 has a single ultra-performance core, a cluster of three high-performance cores, and another made up of four low-power cores.

A mysterious new Snapdragon 888 processor just for Samsung?

Yet, the codename for the chipset (lahaina) matches that of the Snapdragon 888, suggesting it’s either a fake listing or an error caused the benchmark to report the wrong CPU information. Either way, it seems rather impossible that Samsung would bring the latest flagship Snapdragon chip to a mid-range phone, especially when chip shortages have already forced the company to delay the Galaxy S21 FE and outright cancel a 2021 Galaxy Note flagship.

For now, there’s too little information to be completely sure about what Samsung is planning. Thankfully, we do have some believable new details about the Galaxy M52 5G at our hands, thanks to our friends over at GalaxyClub (who also spotted the benchmark listing on Geekbench). The M52 5G will reportedly be coming to some European markets with blue, black, and white color options. A launch in India is no doubt on the cards as well, though a time frame for when the phone will go official is currently unknown.

As for the M52 5G’s spec sheet, we can expect it to share a lot of its hardware with the Galaxy A52 5G. In fact, barring the mysterious chipset, the M52 5G may well be exactly the same as the Galaxy A52 5G, just like the Galaxy M42 5G turned out to be a rebranded Galaxy A42 5G (but with newer software), though we will have to wait and see.

Galaxy J7 Nxt will turn four packing the latest security update there is

Remember the Galaxy J7 Nxt? Samsung does, and so does its security team, who worked hard on the best birthday gift there is: peace of mind. The June 2021 security patch has started making its way to select Galaxy J7 Nxt models in Argentina and Thailand. This particular software release is identified by model number J701FXXUACUE5 or J701MUBUBCUE1. Given how it’s targeting the international model of the modestly-specced 2017 device, expect to see it in your vicinity sooner rather than later.

Oh, and while you shouldn’t confuse the Galaxy J7 Nxt for the Galaxy J7 (2017), we won’t blame you if you do. After all, the latter has also started receiving the very latest security update from Samsung this past weekend. These two entry-level handsets from forever ago are enjoying a better level of support than the latest flagships from Xiaomi, OPPO, and co. By several orders of magnitude, mind you.

The Galaxy J7 Nxt puts even (non-Samsung) flagships to shame, update-wise

As for the update at hand, the June 2021 security patch level has been rolling out worldwide for just over a month now. Throughout that period, Samsung initiated 147 other deployments across 36 countries, present company not included. As always, you can try to speed things up a bit by navigating to Settings > Software update > Download and install.
