Galaxy S9, S9+ are Samsung’s first phones to get January 2021 security patch

Samsung has been pretty amazing in 2020 in terms of rolling out software updates to its devices. With the start of the new year, the company has blessed Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ users with a new software update. It has started rolling out the January 2021 security patch to these two smartphones.

The Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ are receiving the January 2021 security patch in Germany right now. As expected, it is a minor update based on Android 10, and it doesn’t bring any new software feature to the phones. The new software bears firmware version G960FXXSDFTL1 for the Galaxy S9 and G965FXXSDFTL1 for the Galaxy S9+. Right now, it is not clear which security bugs it fixes, but we expect Samsung to detail them soon.

If you are a Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+ user in Germany, you would have already received a notification for the new update. If you haven’t, you can manually check for it by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. If you don’t want to wait for the update, you can download it manually from our firmware section.

It is surprising to see the Galaxy S9 series getting the new security patch ahead of newer high-end phones from the company. We expect Samsung to expand the new security patch to other markets and other devices soon.

‘Everyday Epic’: Galaxy S21 January 14 Unpacked launch is official!

2020 was labeled the year of the New Normal as worldwide events left a big mark on the economy and the mobile market as a whole. Yearly launch events were held in a virtual environment throughout the year and companies like Samsung were forced to rethink many of their strategies.

For the time being, we can’t be certain that mobile launch events will ever revert back to the old format, but as far as Unpacked 2021 is concerned, the event will be held online and Samsung will leverage its social media presence to push the Galaxy S21 series and other upcoming products into the spotlight.

Samsung invites us to the Everyday Epic

Regardless of whether it’s because Samsung wants to bring the fight closer to Apple or Huawei, or for other reasons, the company has decided to host Unpacked 2021 earlier than usual. If you’ve kept updated with recent leaks and rumors then this shouldn’t surprise you in the least, but for what it’s worth, Samsung has now outright confirmed that Unpacked 2021 will be hosted on January 14.

The company is now sending out press invites for the virtual event and is welcoming everyone to the Everyday Epic. The invitation reads: Over the past year, mobile technology has taken center stage in everyday life as people are working remotely and spending more time at home. The accelerated transition to a mobile-first world brings with it the need for devices that can transform everyday life into an extraordinary experience.

Exactly how Samsung wants to achieve this transformation was not made clear in the invite. The official promo image provided by the company depicts the new Galaxy S21 camera module design hidden inside an opaque cube. The exact meaning will surely be explained on the virtual stage. Samsung is also going to unveil the new Galaxy Buds Pro earbuds alongside the Galaxy S21 series, and probably a few new accessories as well.

Unpacked 2021 will take place on January 14 at 10 AM EST and fans will be able to check Samsung’s dedicated Facebook and Instagram pages for an AR (augmented reality) countdown ahead of the event. We’ll also provide links to the livestream once they’re available so stay tuned if you don’t want to miss out on anything. Until then, find out everything we know about the Galaxy S21 series in our roundup article.

It’s not out yet but someone’s selling the Galaxy Buds Pro on Facebook

It’s become normal for any mobile product to be leaked before its market debut, just as it’s expected for the intensity of leaks and rumors to ramp up as the product gets closer to launch. The very first leaks usually aren’t very revealing but when a new series of flagship phones or a new pair of wireless earbuds are less than two weeks away from their debut, that’s when the wildest leaks tend to happen.

Case in point, the upcoming Galaxy Buds Pro earbuds were exposed in press renders before, but now the earbuds along with its retail package have been spotted in a handful of live photos. And what’s even more mindboggling is that these hands-on photos, seen in the image gallery below, originate from a Galaxy Buds Pro listing on the Facebook Marketplace.

Indeed, the person behind the listing claims to have two pairs of Galaxy Buds Pro earbuds in their possession, one of which was put up for sale on the Facebook Marketplace for $180. Just to be clear, SamMobile is in no way associated with the seller and/or the listing, so it’s entirely up to you if you want to take the seller up on his offer, assuming it’s still available.

Galaxy Buds Pro battery life and IP rating (re)confirmed

Perhaps more interesting are the additional details revealed by the hands-on photos. First of all, the Galaxy Buds Pro retail box has the opposite color scheme of the previous earbuds. The box is no longer white, but black, so there’s no way that anyone could mistake these for Apple products.

In addition, the back of the box reconfirms a few rumored features pertaining to the Galaxy Buds Pro, such as its 2-way speaker system and the improved IPX7 rating. As a reminder, the Galaxy Buds+ and the Galaxy Buds Live have a mere IPX2 rating. The retail box also reconfirms ANC (Active Noise Cancelling) and a battery setup capable of up to 18 hours of music playback on a single charge, case included.

The Galaxy Buds Pro should be unveiled on January 14 alongside the Galaxy S21 flagship phone series and it’s expected to hit the shelves in three color options for around $200.
