Samsung Odyssey Windows Mixed Reality headset now available for purchase

Samsung launched its first Windows Mixed Reality headset last month. It’s called Samsung Odyssey and requires a compatible Windows 10-powered computer to function. Samsung started taking pre-orders for the headset last month and it’s is now available for purchase via Samsung’s website.

This isn’t a standalone headset so it will be of no use until it’s hooked up to a compatible Windows 10 PC. Samsung’s mixed reality headset has much better specifications compared to the other headsets that have been launched so far.

Samsung Odyssey Windows Mixed Reality Headset

Instead of LCD panels, the Samsung Samsung Odyssey Windows Mixed Reality Headset has dual 3.5-inch AMOLED panels for a combined resolution of 2880×1600. That’s significantly more than the 1440×1440 resolution of competing headsets.

The headset also features inside-out position tracking with a Six Degrees of Freedom sensor. This means that users aren’t restricted to a limited space during their VR experience.

The headset boasts up to 110-degree field of view and refresh rate of up to 90Hz. It even has integrated AKG headphones with support for 360° Spatial Sound. The bundled motion controllers feature haptic feedback with thumbsticks and button control for ease of use.

Samsung has launched the headset in the United States first. It has already confirmed that the headset will be released in China, Hong Kong, Korea and Brazil later this year.

The Samsung Odyssey Windows Mixed Reality Headset can now be purchased via the company’s website for $499.

SamMobile Daily Recap: November 6, 2017 — Android 8.0 Oreo, Galaxy Note 9 and more!

Overdue international Galaxy Note 8 security patch might arrive next week

The international unlocked Galaxy Note 8 (SM-N950F) has not received a security patch since August. It’s long overdue and Samsung is yet to roll one out. While the Galaxy Note 8 has received the October security patch in some markets, there’s no word as yet on when it will arrive for this variant.

We hear that there’s a possibility that the overdue Galaxy Note 8 security patch for the international unlocked variant is going to be released at some point next week.

Galaxy Note 8 Security Patch

Samsung first released the October security patch for the Galaxy Note 8 in China and Hong Kong. Earlier today, the company also rolled out the same patch for the Galaxy Note 8 in Canada.

The patch hasn’t arrived on the international unlocked model yet. It hasn’t received one since August. Samsung bypassed the September patch for almost all of its devices as it was busy patching the Blueborne vulnerability.

Next week, we’ll either see the October security patch being rolled out for the Galaxy Note 8 (SM-N950F) or the latest patch for the month of November. Samsung is likely going to detail this month’s security patch in a couple of days.

There’s a possibility that this variant of the Galaxy Note 8 might be the first Samsung device to receive the November security patch. Given how long users have been made to wait for a new security update, it would certainly be appropriate.

We shall find out next week how this is going to pan out.

Samsung loses $120 million appeal in patent lawsuit with Apple

Apple was awarded $120 million in damages in a patent lawsuit against Samsung back in 2014. A US circuit appeals court overturned that verdict in February last year in what was a minor victory for Samsung. Apple took the matter to a different federal appeals court that reinstated Apple’s victory and ruled that Samsung pay $120 million in damages.

Samsung then took the matter to the United States Supreme Court. It’s out of luck and legal options now. The apex court has refused to hear Samsung’s appeal in the case.

Samsung vs Apple

Samsung had appealed the reinstatement of $120 million in damages to the Supreme Court. The highest court in the land has refused to entertain the appeal. That means that last year’s ruling which reinstated the award to Apple now stands.

The patents in this drawn-out legal saga include autocorrect, slide-to-unlock, and quick links. Infringement of the quick links feature accounts for $99 million of the damages alone.

This is a clear win for Apple. Samsung doesn’t have many options left right now but to pay the $120 million.

Samsung did clinch a major victory in another patent dispute with Apple. The Supreme Court sided with Samsung in that one and threw out a $399 million damages award to Apple. The company had claimed that Samsung had copied key iPhone designs.

Unity releases its last version with support for Tizen and Samsung Smart TVs

Unity is a popular game development engine that has proven to be instrumental in the advancement of the Tizen app ecosystem. Developers were able to port many of their mobile games for iOS and Android over to Tizen as they were built on the same engine. Samsung has also been promoting Tizen game development in partnership with Unity for the past couple of years.

There has now been a new development on this front. Unity Technologies has confirmed that Unity 2017.2 is going to be the last version with support for Tizen and Samsung’s Smart TV platform.

Unity Support For Tizen

Unity has officially confirmed that it has dropped support for the Tizen and Samsung’s Smart TV platform. Unity 2017.2 is going to be the last version with support for these platforms. Unity promises to provide developers with 12 months of support, including patches and security updates.

What this means is that developers can continue to develop games for Tizen on previous versions of Unity but they won’t be able to take advantage of any of the new features that Unity introduces in future releases of its game development engine.

Unity has said that it’s going to shift its attention to platforms where its community is more active. Samsung’s Gear VR is one of those platforms so we can expect better games for the Gear VR built on Unity in the future.

Bixby on Galaxy S8 Active has a weird Calendar bug

Samsung launched the Galaxy S8 Active a couple of months back. It’s the first rugged smartphone of its kind to feature Bixby, Samsung’s AI-powered digital assistant. The assistant seems to have a weird bug, though, as many Galaxy S8 Active owners are complaining about it on Samsung’s support forum.

Several owners have reported that Bixby on Galaxy S8 Active can’t launch the Calendar app. It should be very easy for the assistant to do this as it’s fully capable of launching native applications.

Bixby On Galaxy S8 Active

Samsung’s support forum has countless posts from Galaxy S8 Active owners who are experiencing this bug. The reports go back several weeks and it’s still not clear why Bixby is unable to launch the app.

When it’s given the command to launch Calendar, Bixby on Galaxy S8 Active says that the app needs to be updated. Users say that it displays this message even if they have the latest version of the app installed.

It’s not known at this point in time what might be causing this issue. Samsung hasn’t said anything as yet but a forum moderator has said that the issue will be reported to the company.

Have you experienced this on your Galaxy S8 Active? Let us know in the comments below.

Samsung opening ten exclusive retail stores in Bengaluru, India

Samsung has announced that it will be opening no less than ten retail stores in the city of Bengaluru, India, by December. The company says these stores will help it better serve consumers, and everything from Samsung’s smartphones to its QLED TVs will be made available in these stores. Samsung already has a vast offline retail presence in India, but unlike Apple, it doesn’t usually open dedicated stores in the country outside malls, making this a notable move.

The decision to open exclusive stores might have something to do with Xiaomi catching up to the Korean giant in the Indian smartphone race; Xiaomi’s first offline retail store had also been opened in the same city earlier this year. Xiaomi doesn’t have the wide-ranging product portfolio (especially outside the budget phone segment) that Samsung does, however, so that’s where the latter should have a considerable lead. The Samsung stores will be set up in key locations in Bengaluru, including Whitefield, which is one of the city’s major IT hubs.

Rajeev Bhutani, Vice President of Samsung India’s Consumer Electronics Business, had this to say:

Samsung has always been at the forefront of innovation that aims at creating products catering to the evolving needs of consumers. The reception for Samsung products has been overwhelming and we have witnessed tremendous demand from Bengaluru. These stores will help us in reaching out to customers at their convenience, serving them better. Backed by excellent customer service, our strong retail network has been pivotal in retaining loyalty for the brand as well as in maintaining a strong presence across all major towns and cities.

Galaxy Note 8 gets the October security patch in Canada

It was around two weeks ago that the first update with the October security patch hit the Galaxy Note 8, and the same update is now making its way to Canada. The update is available for Note 8 handsets locked to Bell, the country’s largest network operator, and the firmware version is making the jump to N950WVLU2BQJA.

Galaxy Note 8 gets the October security patch in Canada

The October security patch brings fixes for 215 vulnerabilities found in Android and six that are exclusive to Samsung handsets. For those wondering, the October patch doesn’t include a fix for the KRACK vulnerability discovered in the WPA2 Wi-Fi security protocol. It will probably be included in the November security update, but since Google hasn’t yet revealed details on the November patch, nothing can be confirmed at this point.

Samsung has been slow with bringing the October security patch to its latest flagship, and we’re hoping the company will pick up the slack in the coming weeks instead of skipping this particular update in some markets as it did with the September patch to focus on the BlueBorne vulnerability. If have a Galaxy Note 8 purchased from Bell, you can check for the latest update by heading into the Settings » Software update menu. If you prefer the manual route, you can download the latest firmware from our database.

Have you received the new update on your Galaxy Note 8?

Here’s a list of all the new features Android 8.0 Oreo brings to your Galaxy smartphone

Samsung Gallery app update introduces option to hide albums

Samsung has pushed out an update to its gallery app that brings the ability to hide albums. Samsung’s Android devices already offer a slew of methods to keep your data secret, including Private Mode and Secret Mode, but the new gallery feature is a simple one that doesn’t involve any passwords or security, or even allow you to hide default albums like the camera and screenshots folders.

Hiding albums is now possible in the Samsung Gallery app

Once you have updated the gallery app, you can tap the three-dot button on the top right inside the gallery, tap on Hide albums, select the albums that you don’t want to see in the gallery, then finally hit Hide. To bring the hidden albums back, you only need to repeat the procedure that you used for hiding them in the first place. Again, only folders created by third-party apps, such as those by WhatsApp or Instagram, can be hidden, so it seems more of a feature for reducing the clutter inside the gallery rather than something to keep away prying eyes.

Samsung Gallery app updated with ability to hide albums

The update to the Gallery app can be obtained from Galaxy Apps (from the My Apps » Update section found in the Galaxy Apps menu), and it should also show up in the Play Store at some point. The update seems to be available for most devices running Android 7.0 Nougat, although we don’t see it on non-flagships like the Galaxy J7 (2017) just yet. You can still try updating, though, by grabbing the APK file for the latest version of the gallery from our APK database.

What do you think of the new gallery feature?

Galaxy Note 9 codename (possibly) revealed

Samsung will soon start developing the Galaxy Note 9, the successor to the popular Galaxy Note 8, under the codename “Crown,” according to a report originating from South Korea. The handset is expected to go on sale towards the latter part of 2018.

A local smartphone component supplier, which wanted to remain anonymous, was quoted by news outlet The Bell as saying that it will “start providing components for a pilot production of the Galaxy Note 9 in the first quarter next year.”

Related: Galaxy Note 9 features like the S Pen will be improved

The Galaxy Note 9 is tipped to be a more refined variant of the Galaxy Note 8. It should sport the same 6.3-inch Infinity Display and similar internals, while Samsung focuses its attention on improving the unit’s dual-camera and S Pen.

Galaxy Note 9 to feature a Snapdragon 845 CPU

Announced in August, the Galaxy Note 8 features an Exynos 8895/Snapdragon 835 processor and a 3,300mAh non-removable battery. Analysts expect the Galaxy Note 9, on the other hand, to pack the upcoming Snapdragon 845 CPU in some regions.
