Samsung patents six-camera smartphone setup with this unique feature

Samsung is no stranger to innovations and impressive technologies. After all, it was the first brand to commercially launch a foldable smartphone, something that requires innovation on almost all fronts. It is also the first company to develop a 108MP smartphone camera sensor. Now, a newly published patent reveals that the company is working on an impressive smartphone camera setup with six cameras.

The South Korean smartphone giant applied for a patent last year that shows that the company’s six-camera smartphone setup includes tiltable image sensors. The 55-page patent document titled ‘Apparatus and method for operating multiple cameras for digital photography’ explains how Samsung plans to use five wide-angle cameras and a telephoto camera for improved image quality in a broader range of scenarios. The company also has other variations of camera sensors in the works.

Samsung Smartphone Patent Six-Camera

Each of the camera sensors in Samsung’s patent is independently tiltable, and this feature could be used to optimize the camera for various scenarios and higher quality. For example, the sensors to the left and the right can be tilted towards the edges, while the camera sensors at the center can be set to remain straight to capture a panoramic image. The information from all the sensors can be combined to create a high-quality image. The camera setup can also be used to capture panoramic scenes with bokeh effects.

According to Samsung’s patent, a multi-camera setup with tiltable sensors can be used to capture clearer images in low-light conditions. Such setups also help in attaining better focus range and higher dynamic range in various scenarios, something that current-generation smartphone cameras are unable to do. This technology could also be used to capture wider videos with better image stabilization and focus range.

Smartphone photography could become really interesting if and when Samsung uses this patented technology in an actual device.

Samsung to supply 5G network equipment to TELUS

Samsung has announced that it has been chosen to supply 5G network infrastructure to TELUS, the third biggest telecom firm in Canada. This is the second deal the South Korean firm has been able to make after its entry into the Canadian market late last year. In December 2019, Samsung had bagged the order to provide 4G LTE-A and 5G network equipment to Videotron, Canada’s fifth-biggest telecom company.

Samsung has been able to ink four deals over the past seven months, and as more countries move to 5G connectivity over the next few years, the company’s business is set to rise. The South Korean tech giant now has deals in Canada, New Zealand, and the US. Samsung is already in talks with India’s most prominent telecom firm, Reliance Jio, to provide 5G network equipment. Even the UK government is in talks with the company to replace Huawei’s network gear from local telecom firms’ infrastructure.

Jeon Kyung-hoon, Head of Samsung Electronics Network Business Unit, said, “Based on our commercialization experience and unique 5G network solutions in many 5G leading countries, We will actively cooperate to open up new horizons in Canada in the new 5G era.

Huawei’s loss is Samsung’s gain in 5G network equipment business

2020 could be the turning point for Samsung’s telecom infrastructure business as governments all over the world pressurize Huawei due to data security concerns. Huawei is the current leader in the cellular network equipment business, but Ericsson, Nokia, and Samsung could see their market share improve dramatically due to the ban on Chinese firms Huawei and ZTE in multiple countries.

Samsung has the highest number of granted 5G patents in the world, so it is well-equipped to compete with its rivals. According to the latest figures from IHS Markit, Huawei, Ericsson, and Samsung are the three leading players in the 5G equipment market, with 26.2%, 23.4%, and 23.3% market share, respectively.

Galaxy A21s can now be reserved in Germany, one day ahead of release

Samsung Germany spilled the beans on the Galaxy A21s today and confirmed that the phone’s exact release has been scheduled for June 19. Indeed, customers in Germany will be able to buy the Galaxy A21s tomorrow from the company’s online shop and select retail partners. Much like in other European countries such as the Netherlands, the Galaxy A21s in Germany will cost 209 euros.

The Galaxy A21s is a rather unusual device in Samsung’s portfolio. Not because of its characteristics but on account of it being released ahead of the smartphone model upon which it was supposed to improve, i.e., the Galaxy A21. But while the latter device seemingly remains scheduled for a summer release, the Galaxy A21s is already hitting the shelves in numerous countries around the world, becoming one of Samsung’s most recent budget-conscious smartphones.

Galaxy A21s can now be reserved in Germany

Samsung Germany is now listing the Galaxy A21s on its e-shop where buyers can reserve the device in black, blue, or white. The phone features dual SIM capabilities, 32GB of storage expandable via microSD through a dedicated slot, 3GB of RAM, Bluetooth 5.0 LE, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a USB-C connector.

The Galaxy A21s has a 6.5-inch PLS TFT LCD with an Infinity-O corner cutout and resolution of 1600 by 720 pixels, and also carries a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner rather than an under-display module. The back panel features a quad-camera setup with a 48MP main shooter and a 2MP macro sensor. These components rely on a 5,000mAh battery with 15W fast charging, and Samsung claims users should be getting up to 21 hours of video playback on a single charge.

Samsung lost 2nd place in Q1 smartwatch market to Huawei, or has it?

Samsung fell to third place in the global smartwatch market in Q1 2020, at least according to new data shared by market analysis firm Canalys. Samsung was reportedly outperformed by Huawei who climbed up the ladder to grab the silver medal from the Korean tech giant, the latter of which reportedly shipped 1.8 million smartwatches over the three-month period.

According to the data, Samsung shipped roughly 600,000 more smartwatches in Q1 2020 than it did a year ago. The company boosted its global market share from 9.6% to 12.4% year-on-year, but despite all this, Samsung was still overtaken by Huawei with 2.1 million shipments and a 14.9% market share.

Different market research firms, different methodologies

It’s worth noting that the latest bits of information don’t quite match the previous analysis from Strategy Analytics. The previous report claimed Samsung had shipped 1.9 million smartwatches and secured 2nd place in Q1 2020 after Apple and ahead of Garmin with a market share of 13.9%. Similarly, the previous report claimed that the smartwatch market as a whole grew 20% year-on-year in Q1 2020, while the recent analysis from Canalys estimates that the smartwatch market experienced only a 12% YoY increase in the first quarter.

Simply put, these discrepancies exist because different market watchers have different research methodologies, and final results can end up being more or less dissimilar. With all said and done, Samsung may have indeed lost second place to Huawei in Q1 2020, at least according to some market watchers but not others. Whatever the case may be, Samsung is gearing up to unveil the new Galaxy Watch 3 and the upcoming wearable might have the potential to propel the company’s influence in the segment, especially since it’s going to be a direct sequel to the Galaxy Watch instead of a Watch Active 2 successor.

Galaxy S10 Lite June security update brings a host of improvements

The Galaxy S10 Lite is getting a new software update today, gaining a whole host of improvements along with the June 2020 security patch. The Galaxy S10 Lite has received excellent support from Samsung since it launched. Its first update introduced a number of features that weren’t available on the device out of the box, and it was soon followed by an update to One UI 2.1, which brought even more new features.

The latest Galaxy S10 Lite update is focused on improvements, with the changelog promising better fingerprint recognition, camera quality and stability, and audio performance over both earphones and the phone’s speaker. It also removes Mirror Link support from the device – the Mirror Link service was discontinued on June 1 and no longer works, so we can expect Samsung to remove the feature from other devices as well.

Firmware version G770FXXU2BTF3 is rolling out to the Galaxy S10 Lite in Spain as we write this, and you can expect it to arrive in other countries in the coming days. You can download the update on your phone by going into its settings, selecting Software update, and tapping Download and install. The latest firmware can also be downloaded from our archive if you prefer updating manually or haven’t yet received the update over the air.

Samsung could be cutting too many corners with Galaxy Note 20

Samsung will launch the Galaxy Note 20 series in August, and the new lineup includes the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Understandably, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will feature better specifications than the Galaxy Note 20 such as a better camera sensor, larger screen, and a larger battery. However, it looks like the company could be cutting too many corners with the lower-priced Galaxy Note 20.

According to noted tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce), the Galaxy Note 20 could feature a smaller and flatter display with Full HD+ resolution, 60Hz refresh rate, and wider bezels. That’s a significant step down when compared to the rumored specifications of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Especially, the lack of a high refresh rate screen could hurt a lot of expectations. In comparison, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is expected to feature a 120Hz LTPO Super AMOLED display with QHD+ resolution.

While Ice Universe has an accurate track record when it comes to Samsung leaks, we can’t be sure about the Galaxy Note 20’s screen specifications just yet. Moreover, it is hard to imagine Samsung using a QHD+ 120Hz screen on the cheapest variant of the Galaxy S20 but choosing to equip the Galaxy Note 20 with a Full HD+ 60Hz panel. On the plus side, a smaller and lower-resolution screen with a 60Hz refresh rate and a 4,300mAh battery might result in longer battery life.

The Galaxy Note 20 could also be missing out on the 108MP camera sensor and 45W fast charging. Whatever the case is, we will get to know the exact specifications of the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra in early August during Samsung’s Unpacked 2020 digital event.

Galaxy Note 20+/Ultra seems to have an odd screen resolution

Samsung is due to launch the Galaxy Note 20 in under two months. We’re gradually finding out more information about the device. From what we know so far, there will be two variants, the Galaxy Note 20 with a flat display and a Galaxy Note 20+/Ultra with a curved panel.

The latest finding suggests that the larger Galaxy Note 20+ may feature a somewhat odd screen resolution. It also points towards a 19.3:9 aspect ratio for the handset’s display.

New information about the Galaxy Note 20 surfaces

The Galaxy Note 20+/Ultra bearing model number SM-N986U has appeared on HTML5test where it drops some hints about its screen resolution and aspect ratio. As per the listing, it’s going to have a 3096×1444 pixel resolution and 19.3:9 aspect ratio. Earlier reports have also pointed to the same figures.

The screen resolution stands out because we haven’t seen it yet on any other Samsung device. For the sake of comparison, the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 10 have a screen resolution of 3200×1440 and 3040×1440 respectively. Samsung went for a taller 20:9 aspect ratio for the Galaxy S20 while the Galaxy Note 10 is 19:9.

The Galaxy Note handsets tend to be wider anyway so the expected aspect ratio doesn’t really come as a surprise, although some things just don’t add up at this stage. The HTML5test shows a test resolution instead of the actual resolution, but it does reveal the aspect ratio.

We can expect more clarity on this down the line as detailed specs of the Galaxy Note 20 lineup will inevitably surface closer to launch. Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Note 20 alongside the Galaxy Fold 2 at a virtual Unpacked event on August 5. The devices are said to hit shelves on August 20.

Multiple Galaxy Watch 3 variants pick up Bluetooth certification

We had recently leaked all the important specifications of Samsung’s upcoming smartwatch. Ahead of its launch in July, the Galaxy Watch 3 is going through the necessary certification processes. After showing up in databases of regulatory agencies like 3C, CMIIT, FCC, South Korea’s NRRA, and Thailand’s NBTC, the upcoming wearable device has now passed through Bluetooth SIG’s certification.

Multiple variants of the Galaxy Watch 3, including SM-R845U, SM-R845F, SM-R840, SM-R845N, and SM-R8450, have picked up Bluetooth certification. These are Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + LTE variants of the 41mm version of the smartwatch. All these smartwatches seem to feature Bluetooth 5.0 with LE (Low Energy) connectivity. It appears that Samsung might soon launch the Galaxy Watch 3. The 45mm version of the Galaxy Watch 3 bears model numbers SM-R850 and SM-R855.

Samsung seems to be skipping the Galaxy Watch 2 name for reasons unknown and choosing to launch the Galaxy Watch’s successor with the Galaxy Watch 3 name. The upcoming smartwatch will be available in 41mm and 45mm versions, and they will have 1.2-inch and 1.4-inch circular AMOLED screens, respectively. The display will be protected by Gorilla Glass DX. The watch will feature 1GB RAM, 8GB storage, and Tizen OS 5.5.

The Galaxy Watch 3 will come in stainless steel and titanium versions, and both variants will have a MIL-STD-810G compliant design and IP68 certification for dust and 5ATM water resistance. It will feature a heart-rate monitor, ECG, and sleep tracking. The watch will also feature a physical rotating bezel, similar to the Galaxy Watch. The 41mm version will have a 247mAh battery, while a 340mAh battery will power the 45mm version.

Galaxy Z Flip 5G to have Snapdragon 865 instead of Snapdragon 855+

It looks like the addition of 5G connectivity won’t be the only upgrade the Galaxy Z Flip 5G will bring over its LTE counterpart. Expected to be announced in early August alongside the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Fold 2, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G has been the subject of a few leaks recently. We had revealed almost two months ago that the 5G Z Flip would come with the same amount of internal storage as the LTE variant, but apart from that, not much has been known about the phone’s specs.

Everyone had simply assumed that Samsung would keep the same specs on both the LTE and 5G variants, including the Snapdragon 855+ processor, but it turns out that won’t be the case. The Galaxy Z Flip 5G popped up on Geekbench earlier today, and according to the benchmark listing, it’s running on a Snapdragon 865 (accompanied by 8GB of RAM). That is likely to make prospective customers happy, as while the Snapdragon 855+ is a very capable processor, it will be a year old by the time the Z Flip 5G goes on sale.

Of course, it makes one wonder how the price of the phone will be affected by the silicon upgrade when combined with the inclusion of 5G support. The Galaxy Z Flip carried a $1350 price tag in the US and around €1500 in Europe when it launched in February, and it will be interesting to see if Samsung will risk further increasing the asking price for the 5G variant. We guess we will find out eventually – rumors about the Z Flip 5G’s pricing will likely start hitting the internet in a few weeks, ahead of Samsung’s official announcement.

Would you be willing to pay more for the Galaxy Z Flip 5G because of the Snapdragon 865 processor, or would you prefer Samsung keep the same price for the device as its LTE variant?
