Samsung’s Tizen is the world’s largest TV platform

Tizen is the largest TV streaming platform in the world, according to the latest numbers. The Linux-based operating system developed by Samsung is used in the company’s smart TVs, smart monitors, and smartwatches. Tizen currently accounts for 12.5% of connected TV devices worldwide, ahead of other platforms.

According to market research firm Strategy Analytics, Samsung sold 11.8 million TVs worldwide during Q3 2020, which was the best quarterly performance ever by Samsung or any other brand. The report also states that there are currently over 155 million Tizen-based smart TVs in use worldwide, which is a healthy increase of 23% compared to 2019. LG’s WebOS, Sony PlayStation, Roku TV OS, Amazon’s Fire TV OS, and Google’s Android TV are the next big connected TV platforms worldwide.

The global market for connected TV devices reached 81.3 million units in Q3 2020, a 19% rise compared to last year. This category includes smart TVs, streaming media players, and game consoles. The overall TV sales in 2020 are expected to be 7% higher compared to 2019 due to the work-from-home trend following the COVID-19 pandemic and launches of new gaming consoles.

Samsung is now focusing on monetizing Tizen on its smart TVs, offering content providers and advertisers to reach more viewers. The company has also launched its free and linear TV streaming service Samsung TV+ in various countries worldwide. The service was recently launched for Galaxy smartphones.

David Watkins, Director of TV Streaming Platforms at Strategy Analytics, said, “By the end of this year, nearly 1.3 billion connected TV devices will be in use worldwide. Samsung’s success in smart TVs means that it will retain its leadership position for some time. The multi-way battle between Samsung, LG, Sony, Amazon, Roku, and Google will shape the way TV is viewed over the coming decade.”

BREAKING: Stable Galaxy S20 Android 11 One UI 3.0 update is out!

Samsung kicked off the One UI 3.0 beta program in September and the Galaxy S20 series was the first to join. Likewise, the Galaxy S20 recently became Samsung’s first smartphone to exit the beta stages of development and receive the first stable version of One UI 3.0. The stable update is now rolling out in the USA via Verizon and it will reach additional markets in the coming days and weeks.

One UI 3.0 is a more modern take on Samsung’s proprietary Android skin, one that streamlines various UI elements including the notification shade and the overall look of 1st party apps, from Contacts and Phone to Gallery and more. Aside from the visual changes, One UI 3.0 also adds a wide range of new features to the Galaxy S20 series, such as double-tapping to turn off the screen, additional Camera filters, and Single Take improvements to name a few.

There was some confusion about Verizon’s update at first and it’s still not entirely clear if the recent update was pushed out early by mistake or by design. Either way, you should be able to download the latest update on your Verizon-bound Galaxy S20 model by opening Settings on your phone, accessing System updates and tapping Download and install. Galaxy S20 owners in other markets should stay put as the One UI 3.0 / Android 11 rollout will expand beyond Verizon’s borders soon.

2TB 980 Pro SSD seemingly exists and it’s on track for a January release

Samsung’s first and only PCIe 4.0 NVMe consumer SSD is about to get better. The 980 Pro was introduced a couple of months ago in three storage configurations – 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB – but a UK-based third-party e-talier has seemingly spilled the beans on an upcoming 2TB 980 Pro variant.

The product listing includes photos of the 1TB model but the device description mentions 2TB of storage. Read and write speeds are TBA but they might be similar to the existing 980 Pro variants. For reference, the existing models can deliver read/write speeds of up to 7,000MB/s and 5,000MB/s, respectively.

The 2TB 980 Pro might be released in January

The e-tailer is giving customers the option of pre-ordering the 2TB 980 Pro for the price of £443. Samsung hasn’t mentioned anything about the 2TB 980 Pro SSD solution but according to the e-tailer, pre-order customers should be getting the product shipped to their mailboxes beginning January 14.

Samsung will likely acknowledge the 2TB 980 Pro SSD officially until then, assuming of course that the e-tailer has the right information and the 2TB variant will be released in the coming weeks. If so then we can safely assume that the 2TB 980 Pro won’t be limited to the UK and it will reach other markets around the same time.

Did Verizon just release stable Galaxy S20 One UI 3.0 Android 11 update?

Verizon appears to have just released the stable Android 11 / One UI 3.0 firmware update for the Galaxy S20 series, but don’t celebrate just yet. There’s a reason why the title above puts this into question, and it has to do with Verizon’s confusing support pages. They mention that the Android 11 update is out now along with the November 2020 security patch, but the build number suggests it’s a beta build.

Meanwhile, a couple of Reddit posts have already cropped up to suggest that Verizon is now rolling out the stable Android 11 / One UI 3.0 update for the Galaxy S20 series, except it has the October 2020 security patch in tow, as seen in the screenshot below..

In addition, more and more news outlets are reporting that Verizon’s Galaxy S20 series is indeed receiving stable Android 11 / One UI 3.0 as we speak, so it may be that Verizon has included erroneous information in its support pages by mistake.
