Samsung launches 14nm Exynos 7570 processor for entry-level devices

Samsung has unveiled the new Exynos 7570 chipset that’s made for entry-level smartphones and tablets as well as IoT devices. It is based on the company’s power-efficient 14nm FinFET fabrication technology for smaller size and better power efficiency.

The South Korean electronics giant was the first company to release a smartphone SoC based on 14nm FinFET technology. The company later extended its 14nm SoC lineup by introducing Exynos 7870 for mid-range devices and Exynos 8890 for high-end devices. Now, with the introduction of Exynos 7570, Samsung’s complete Exynos lineup is based on 14nm technology.

As for the Exynos 7570 itself, the chipset uses a quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU, which is said to offer 70 percent improved performance and 30 percent improvement in power efficiency when compared to 28nm based predecessor. The SoC also full integrates Cat. 4 LTE 2CA modem, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM Radio, GPS.

Ben K. Hur, Vice President of System LSI Marketing at Samsung Electronics, said, “With Exynos 7570, more consumers will be able to experience the performance benefits of the advanced 14nm FinFET process in affordable devices. By successfully integrating various connectivity solutions, Samsung is strengthening its competitiveness in the single chip market

The Exynos 7570 also integrates an improved image signal processor with support for up to 13-megapixel rear-facing, 8-megapixel front-facing cameras, and 1080p video recording. There’s no clear information about the GPU that Samsung has used in the chipset, but it claims that it can support screen resolutions of up to 1280×800 pixels.

The new SoC integrates a better designed PMIC (power management integrated chip) and RF (radio frequency) functionalities to reduce its physical size by up to 20 percent compared to its predecessor, so that slimmer smartphones can be designed. We can soon see some new smartphones from the company that use the Exynos 7570 chipset.

Samsung demonstrates peak download speeds of 230 Mbps on the Galaxy Note 7 with Sprint

Samsung and Sprint have conducted a live demonstration of three-channel carrier aggregation out in the field. The demonstration was meant to show what’s next for Sprint’s LTE Plus Network which runs on Samsung’s network infrastructure technology. Peak download speeds of up to 230 Mbps were demonstrated on some of Samsung’s best devices including the Galaxy Note 7, the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge.

Carrier aggregation is a feature of LTE-Advanced which joins together bands of spectrum to create wider channels so that there is greater capacity and faster speeds on compatible devices. Basically, it creates a wider lane which enables more data traffic to travel at higher rates. Sprint has now deployed three-channel carrier aggregation on more than 500 cell sites in Chicago.

Samsung’s three-channel carrier aggregation technology is powering the entire setup, it was delivered to Sprint’s existing LTE Plus network via a software upgrade. At the demonstration Samsung successfully showed off peak speeds on the aforementioned devices.

“We continue to invest in LTE Advanced technologies, and drive commercialization of new three-channel aggregation features with carriers such as Sprint through both our Network infrastructure and device products. This will ensure customers will receive the best possible wireless service experience,” aid Mark Louison, SVP and General Manager of Samsung Networks.

The rumor mill is still not over the Galaxy Note 7 with 6GB RAM

Soon after the Galaxy Note 7 was unveiled and it was confirmed that the handset does not have 6GB of RAM, it was reported multiple times that Samsung will launch the Galaxy Note 7 with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage in China. It was believed to offer this configuration only in China as most handsets from local manufacturers already offer 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. However, when the Galaxy Note 7 was officially launched in China last week it was confirmed that it too as the same 4GB RAM like all other variants.

The rumor mill is still not over the possibility that a Galaxy Note 7 with 6GB RAM might be unveiled. An image of a purported Galaxy Note 7 box has been leaked online out of China on which the specs of this handset are listed. Sure enough, the specs mention 6GB RAM. This is obviously not a guarantee that the company is going to offer this configuration in China even though it just looks good on paper when compared to handsets from local devices. It’s not like there will be a significant improvement in the device’s performance just because it has more RAM. It really can’t be said for sure right now if and when the Galaxy Note 7 with 6GB RAM might be launched in China.

Samsung launches first smartwatch in Italy with an integrated embedded SIM

Samsung and TIM have launched the first smartwatch in Italy with an integrated embedded SIM in collaboration with international digital security firm Gemalto. The Samsung Gear S2 Classic 3G is the first wearable device in the world with eSIM which makes it possible to connect the smartwatch easily to TIM’s mobile network in Italy using a QR code. Once it’s on the network the smartwatch can be used to make calls, send and receive messages as well as use cellular data all independent of a smartphone.

Gemalto’s collaboration with Samsung and TIM is important as it will ensure the correct management and customization of mobile radio directly from within the eSIM. This is the first step in the evolution of the traditional SIM. eSIM enables users to activate their network connection remotely and then use the same eSIM on other devices as well like smartphones and tablets. Customers in Italy can purchase the Gear S2 Classic 3G for 399.90 euro or for 49 euro down and equal monthly installments of 10 euro per month for 30 months.

Samsung Gear S3 seen in purported images

Samsung confirmed two weeks ago that it’s going to unveil the Gear S3 smartwatch at IFA 2016 in Berlin. We’ve already confirmed exclusively that it’s going to have a rotary bezel like the Gear S2. No press renders or live images of the smartwatch have been leaked online yet but we did see some alleged spy shots of the Gear S3 a couple of months ago. Today, a couple of new purported images of the Gear S3 have been brought to our attention, but it doesn’t look like what you see here is going to be the final product.

The images come from a Walmart listing for a screen protector cover for the Gear S3. Accessory manufacturers are known to use placeholder images when they release their products before the device actually comes out. The smartwatch you see in these images is most likely a placeholder. It’s interesting to note that the watch face is the same as the Gear S2 whereas you would expect Samsung to spruce it up in the next-generation smartwatch. So take these images with a grain of salt and wait until next week when Samsung formally unveils the Gear S3 smartwatch at IFA 2016 in Berlin. It’s expected to launch three variants of the smartwatch – Gear S3 Classic, Gear S3 Frontier and Gear S3 Explorer – this year.
