Samsung tinkers its TV strategy to counter Chinese rivals in India

It’s not just Samsung’s smartphone business that is facing the heat from Chinese rivals. Its TV business is also under attack with dozens of new brands making their presence felt in the price sensitive market. According to IDC’s Q4 2018 data, Xiaomi has emerged as the largest smart TV vendor in the country with 33.5% market share, followed by LG at 16.7% and Sony at 14.8%. Samsung is placed fourth with 13.3% market share, indicating its growing troubles in the subcontinent.

While Samsung has been aggressively trying to counter the threat from Chinese rivals in the smartphone space, it has been mostly subdued in the TV space so far, content with its dominance in the premium TV segment. However, it appears the company has finally decided to be more aggressive and is tinkering its strategy to take on its rivals in the country.

Samsung revamps its TV portfolio in India

Under the new strategy, the Korean company has launched a new lineup of online-exclusive TVs to compete more effectively on price and a new series of TVs for its offline partners. Samsung’s new offerings target all price points and are aimed at the younger generation with a host of smart features that are developed in India under the ‘Make for India’ initiative. Despite the focus on smart TVs, the company also intends to continue making non-smart TVs as it sees a place for them in the Indian TV market.

“We are available across all price points unlike several competitors. We will continue to invest in consumer-centric benefits and hopes all these efforts along with a revamped product portfolio will help us to increase our lead,” said Raju Pullan, senior VP, Samsung India. He expects Samsung TV revenue to grow substantially and the advent of 5G playing a role in that.

Just as it did with smartphones, the company quotes numbers from GfK to assert its dominance in the country. According to these numbers, Samsung has 30% value share in the entire TV market and 35% value share in the UHD smart TV segment in the country, leading both the categories.

Samsung Galaxy A80 benchmark surfaces ahead of launch

A Galaxy A80 benchmark has now surfaced on Geekbench ahead of the handset’s expected launch tomorrow. Samsung’s “A Galaxy Event” takes place in Milan, Bangkok and São Paulo on April 10. The company is expected to launch new Galaxy A devices at the event, including the Galaxy A80.

Samsung has launched a handful of new Galaxy A series handsets over the past couple of months. It has brought some great new features to the devices while also improving the hardware. The new additions include bigger batteries, multi-lens cameras and even in-display fingerprint sensors.

Samsung Galaxy A80 benchmark

The Galaxy A80 (SM-A805F) benchmark reveals that this device will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6150 processor. That’s likely not the commercial name for this chip. It started popping up on Geekbench in December last year and is believed to be the successor to Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 675 chip. The listing also mentions the possibility that this device may have 8GB of RAM.

Not much else has been confirmed by this Galaxy A80 benchmark but it’s not like we’ll be in the dark about it for too long. There’s a good chance that we might get to hear more about this device from Samsung tomorrow. Its additional features may include 25W Adaptive Fast Charging and a 3,700mah battery.

There has been a lot of talk about a new Galaxy A series handset with a sliding, rotating camera mechanism. This would allow for a ‘Notchless Infinity’ display, something which has already been referenced on an official Samsung website. Clearly, there’s a lot to look forward to from Samsung’s April 10 event. You don’t need to be in those three cities to follow the proceedings live. Here’s how you can stream tomorrow’s Samsung event online.

Samsung turns even more bus stops into Wireless PowerSharing Stations

Samsung has teamed up with outdoor advertising behemoth JCDecaux to transform ten of Singapore’s busiest bus stops into so-called Wireless PowerSharing Stations — a nod to the Wireless PowerShare feature found on the Galaxy S10 — following a similar stunt in Sydney, Australia.

Commuters can hold their device against one of Samsung’s ten Wireless PowerSharing Stations in Singapore to replenish their handset’s battery; albeit by a somewhat marginal amount. That is, of course, unless they loiter there for a significant amount of time, waiting for it to juice up.

With that in mind, it’s far from a practical installation. It’s more of a marketing ploy to cast Wireless PowerShare, which lets Galaxy S10 owners charge other Qi-compatible devices without the need for a single wire — be them a smartphone, a tablet or even a toothbrush — into the mainstream.

“JCDecaux is delighted to create Singapore’s first out-of-home wireless charging stations at bus stops in partnership with Samsung, a brand name synonymous with creativity and connectivity,” said Isaline Duminil, Marketing Director of JCDecaux Singapore, in a statement issued on April 9.

“Our innovative builds for Samsung, strategically located along the stretch of the major retail belt of Singapore, enhances convenience and connectivity for more than one-and-a-half million consumers weekly, giving them an augmented brand experience,” Duminil added.

Galaxy M10 launched in Vietnam, sales start April 17

Following the success of the Galaxy M20, Samsung has launched the Galaxy M10 in Vietnam. Just like its sibling, the Galaxy M10 is also equipped with an Infinity-V display and dual rear camera setup. The device will go on sale in Vietnam on April 17, exclusively via Lazada e-commerce.

A budget phone with an ultra-wide camera

The Galaxy M10 has pretty much the same design and construction as that of the Galaxy M20. It features a 6.2-inch Infinity-V display with a waterdrop-like notch. The device is powered by the Exynos 7870 SoC, coupled with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage space. The Galaxy M10 also comes in a 3GB+32GB variant, but Samsung isn’t yet launching it in Vietnam.

The best thing about the Galaxy M10 is its dual rear camera setup. You get 13MP primary sensor, as well as a secondary 5MP lens that can take 120-degree ultra-wide shots. The AI-powered cameras are capable of identifying 20 different scenes and optimizing image quality accordingly. There’s also a 5M snapper on the front, which comes integrated with features like AR Emoji, AR Stickers, Stamp and Filters. The body is made entirely of plastic, with soft rounded corners and smooth backside, which houses the speaker grill. There’s no fingerprint sensor in this device, but you do get face unlock.

Samsung has priced the Galaxy M10 at VND 3,490,000 (~$150) in Vietnam. Early buyers, however, can grab the phone at just VND 2,790,000 (~$120) on the opening day of sale, that is on April 17. The device will only be sold online via Lazada e-commerce. The Galaxy M10 will be available in green and gray colors in the country.
