Official Galaxy S20 Cover cases get exposed in leaked renders

Hopefully, you’re up for yet another round of Galaxy S20 leaks, because a few new renders depicting three official case designs for the upcoming flagship series have emerged via Twitter. They showcase the designs for the Protective Standing Cover, the LED View Cover, and Clear View Cover cases.

Unsurprisingly, the case designs match the earlier-leaked Galaxy S20 renders perfectly. They don’t reveal anything we didn’t already know about the smartphones themselves. But the leaker sharing these renders does claim that the LED View Cover has actual LEDs this time.

It’s unclear if he was referring to the LED Back Cover (which is not seen in any of the renders) or if the actual LED View Cover will have real LEDs. I guess time will tell but keep a proverbial pinch of salt nearby.

The three case models you can see in the image galleries above and below will not be the only official accessories for the Galaxy S20 series. There will be plenty of other models to choose from. We’ve also learned a couple of weeks ago that the Galaxy S20 Ultra will get an exclusive Kvadrat Cover Case. Likewise, Samsung’s official cases should be available in more than two colors, and will reportedly include a Sky Blue option as seen in leaked Galaxy Buds+ renders.

Galaxy M21 to have the same Exynos 9611 chipset as the Galaxy A51

Last month, we brought to you exclusive news regarding Samsung and the development of the Galaxy M21. Now, just a few weeks after our original report, the device has been spotted online in the Geekbench database where it carries the model number SM-M215F.

Much as we’ve suspected, the Galaxy M21 seems to be powered by the Exynos 9611 chipset. It’s the same SoC that’s been employed by the Galaxy A51 (hit the link for our review), and that’s rather impressive given that there should be a considerable price gap between these two smartphone models.

The benchmark further reveals that the Galaxy M21 runs Android 10 out of the box and it pairs the Exynos 9611 solution with 4GB of RAM. The original Galaxy M20 was also available with 4GB of RAM as an option instead of 3GB, but we suspect that the Galaxy M21 will offer 4GB for the base model, and possibly more than 4GB as an optional extra. Our sources told us that the Galaxy M21 will be available in three color options, namely black, blue, and a more exclusive violet flavor. In addition, two storage options – 64GB and 128GB – should be made available at launch.

As for the phone’s release, it’s still a mystery but, in theory, it shouldn’t take more than a few weeks before the Galaxy M21 hits the shelves. That is if we consider the fact that the Galaxy M20 was introduced in January 2019, and if we assume that Samsung will follow a strict yearly launch schedule.

Samsung’s NEON won’t take your job but could combat your loneliness

The CEO of Samsung’s STAR Labs was recently interviewed in regards to NEON, the artificial human prototype showcased at CES 2020. In the recent discussion with The Economic Times, Pranav Mistry revealed more about why he created NEON and how the artificial human could be used to better humanity. Once again, technical details were scarce and we’ll have to wait at least until later this year to see the final product in action.

NEON aims to bridge the gap between humans and AI

In the recent interview, Pranav Mistry further reaffirmed that NEON is not an AI assistant like Bixby, nor a chatbot. This doesn’t necessarily imply that NEONs are incapable of doing what AI assistants do. The focus, however, is on humanizing the AI and giving it a face. Basically, NEONs are interfaces designed to make AI more approachable. Or as Pranav Mistry calls them, they are front-end-human interfaces to the machines.

Does this mean that NEONs could be ‘attached’ to any AI to give it a unique personality? Unfortunately, this detail remains unclear, but it would certainly be interesting if such APIs for potential partners would be made available later down the line.

The recent interview didn’t touch on the AI behind NEON at all. However, we know that the platform should rely on the so-called Core R3 and SPECTRA proprietary technologies, the latter of which lends its artificial intelligence to NEONs. Therefore, NEONs should, at least in theory, be self-sufficient without exterior AI components.

NEON is not meant to replace human jobs, but it could cure loneliness

Powerful AI can disrupt the job market, and this is one of the reasons why many people are reluctant towards this emerging technology. However, Pranav Mistry doesn’t want NEONs to replace human jobs. He gave an example of how a NEON could be used as a backup news anchor for news that may be breaking at very late hours, instead of a NEON becoming the primary news anchor. It could also contact users and brief them on the latest happenings in a more personal manner. Sort of like a chatbot, by the sound of it, but again, NEONs are not chatbots according to its creator.

The CEO mostly stressed that, although current AI assistants may be capable of providing answers to queries, they are incapable of showing human emotions. Many people are feeling lonely in today’s society, despite the impressive technological advancements, and NEONs could be the solution to that. This seems to be an important selling point for future NEONs. They could become human companions to an extent.

NEONs could be cartoon characters?

Up until now, NEONs have been described as ‘artificial humans’ but, interestingly enough, STAR Labs’ CEO also hinted at the possibility of cartoon characters being brought to life through this technology. Mind you, he didn’t outright confirm or deny this, but he exemplified how cartoon characters are not just in the movies but in our dreams, and now there is a human connection between us and them, even though they are not technically real. This is the reason behind doing this [NEON], he concluded. To make characters more lifelike and interactive, and to bridge the gap between humans and AI; hopefully, all the while avoiding the uncanny valley.

All in all, NEONs seem to be planned to become the face of AI. Exactly how smart they will be is unclear, but a lot of information is still missing. The CEO claims that NEONs are not chatbots nor AI assistants, yet they seem to be capable of performing these tasks, or at the very least, interface with other technologies to add a more human element between them and the users. Whether or not this will have the intended effect remains to be seen. A beta release is planned for the end of the year, and hopefully, we’ll get to learn more about NEON before then.

Samsung to make unlocked Galaxy S20 5G models widely available

Samsung has made it very clear that it intends to be the biggest 5G smartphone vendor. The company already shipped almost 7 million 5G phones in 2019, even though it was the first year for commercial 5G networks.

Recent reports have revealed that Samsung is going to offer 5G variants for the entire Galaxy S20 series. A new report suggests that the 5G variants will be more widely available this time around, so it won’t be necessary for customers to get them from carriers.

Unlocked Galaxy S20 5G variants to be more widely available

The report finds that many of Samsung’s retail partners across Europe have listed the 5G variants of the Galaxy S20 series. This was not the case with the Galaxy S10 5G which was only made available through carrier partners in markets where 5G networks had gone live.

Many of Samsung’s retail partners in Europe have listed unlocked 5G variants of the Galaxy S20. This will enable customers to buy a 5G variant even if their carrier doesn’t have a commercial 5G network, an option many would consider if they frequently travel to places with 5G networks.

This wouldn’t be something out of the ordinary, mind you, as Samsung has already been doing this for the Galaxy Fold 5G. It’s possible to buy an unlocked variant of its 5G-capable foldable smartphone, we would know, we bought four of them. This may also be the case for Galaxy S20 5G variants in other markets.

That’s not to say that Samsung won’t leverage its carrier relationships to sell more 5G units. It’s just that the variant won’t be exclusive to carriers. This hybrid approach will allow Samsung to ship many more 5G units than it would have done otherwise, and that’s really what it appears to be shooting for. The Galaxy S20 is due to be unveiled on February 11 with sales expected to begin a few weeks after the launch.

Sprint will repair your Galaxy screen for $49 even if you’re not a customer

US carrier Sprint is running a great offer for Galaxy smartphone owners, allowing them to repair the broken screen of their Galaxy handset for the very low price of $49. What’s better is that you don’t have to be a Sprint customer to take advantage of this offer. You can be another carrier’s customer and still be eligible for a screen replacement from Sprint.

The carrier’s offer applies to a number of Galaxy smartphones but doesn’t include the latest flagships. It covers the Galaxy S7, the Galaxy S8 and S9 series, and the Galaxy Note 8. And even if your phone is not eligible for repair, Sprint might be able to take it off your hands in exchange for $150 credit towards the purchase of a new device.

Now, certain terms and conditions do apply. To begin with, the offer stands while supplies last, so perhaps Sprint has an inventory of older Galaxy flagship screens and this is its way to put them to good use. Likewise, the offer lasts until February 9, it’s limited to 1 Galaxy screen repair per customer, and Sprint reserves the right to reject phones for repair.

Eligible Galaxy smartphone owners who can visit a Sprint store should try and take advantage of this great deal, especially considering the prices commanded by Samsung’s Repair Centers. A front screen replacement for these flagships would normally set you back anywhere between $219 and $239, so the carrier’s $49 asking price is very attractive indeed.

Galaxy A7 (2018) and A8 (2018) get January security update

Samsung has already updated some Galaxy A series phones launched in 2019 with the January security patch. Now, the company has turned its attention to some older A series devices. The January security update is rolling out to the Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A7 (2018). For the Galaxy A7 (2018), the update is rolling out in Colombia and for subscribers of the Claro network in Brazil. It features software version A750GUBU4BSL1.

The Galaxy A8 (2018) update has been released more widely. It is available in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Panama, Bolivia, Peru, Paraguay, and Trinidad and Tobago. The software version for the A8 (2018) update is A530FXXS9CTA8. Only the new security patch is included in the update for the A8 (2018). The Galaxy A7 (2018) should be getting other features and/or improvements, but we’re unable to say what those might be. You can, however, see what the January security update is all about in our monthly report.

Both devices should get the January update in a few other markets in the coming days, but it will depend on whether either of them has received an update in the last three months in a particular market, as both devices are on a quarterly security update schedule. You can check if the latest update is available for you by opening the Settings app on your phone, navigating to Software update, and selecting Download and install. Firmware for these devices can be found in our firmware archive and can be used to update manually using a Windows PC.

Samsung customer reps still say Galaxy S8 and Note 8 will get Android 10

Hope is a good thing. What isn’t good is to keep giving someone hope only to disappoint them each time. But Samsung’s customer representatives are love doing that, and they’re at it again. We’ve seen before how Samsung’s customer reps have said the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 will be getting Android 10. That’s despite the fact that Samsung makes no mention of the two devices in its Android 10/One UI 2.0 update roadmap, and the company also only provides every device with two Android version upgrades.

But it seems the company’s customer care department is yet to get the memo, as they continue to say that the Galaxy S8 and Note 8 are eligible for the Android 10 update. This seems to be yet another case of Samsung’s customer reps having no clue, although it could also be a case of them simply telling customers what they want to hear. Either way, Samsung’s history with software updates indicates that the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 will end their life on Android Pie (though we would love to be proven wrong).

Even if the Korean giant does end up sending out a third major Android OS update, it will probably start with more recent devices, like the Galaxy Fold, Galaxy S10, or the upcoming Galaxy S20. Unfortunately, we will only find out if that will happen in a couple of years once Android 11 or Android 12 come out.

More Galaxy S20 series renders leak, show the devices in pink

In a matter of hours, we have seen an avalanche of leaks showing off renders of the Galaxy S20 series. Now, the folks over at WinFuture.de have leaked even more renders of all three Galaxy S20 models. These renders are what Samsung will use for marketing purposes, and they show the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and Galaxy S20 Ultra in four colors: Cosmic Grey, Cloud Blue, Cloud Pink, and Cosmic Black.

All of the renders that have made their way on to the internet confirm that the curves on the Galaxy S20 displays are the most subtle yet of any Galaxy flagship. Samsung is using 2.5D glass instead of 3D glass this time around, and although these still aren’t completely flat screens, they should make everyone who has complained about Samsung’s curved displays in the last few years quite happy. Putting on tempered glass protectors should also be easier with the Galaxy S20 smartphones.

With everything that has leaked in recent days, there’s pretty much nothing Samsung will have to surprise us with at its Unpacked Galaxy S20 launch. Unfortunately, while we may already know everything there is to know about the Galaxy S20 lineup, rumors suggest we could be waiting a long time before consumers can actually get their hands on an S20, S20+, or S20 Ultra: The release date is reportedly set for March 13, a full month after the devices will be announced.

Check out all the renders below and let us know what you think!
