12-14-2015 Firmware Updates: Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Core Prime, Galaxy A5, and more

Samsung has a plethora of phones and tablets in its lineup, and regularly releases firmware updates for various devices. These can include major updates, which bring a newer version of the OS to a particular device, or minor ones that improve performance and stability and fix bugs. Software updates for Samsung devices roll out in various regions every day, and you can find out which firmware updates were pushed out by the company over the last 24 hours through our firmware list.

As usual, you can download each of these firmware from our firmware section (simply enter your device’s model number to view all firmware for that device) in order to update to a new firmware manually, or as a means to return to your phone or tablet’s stock software.

Samsung offering a year’s worth of Netflix for free with the Galaxy Tab S2

This holiday season Samsung wants to make it clear that the Galaxy Tab S2 is the tablet to get for your Christmas presents, be it for yourself or friends and family. A new ad for the Galaxy Tab S2 explains just that and now the company is giving yet another incentive to consider its tablet, and you will be enticed by it if you like to watch Netflix.

Those who purchase the Galaxy Tab S2 between December 13 and December 26 in the United States will get a one-year Netflix subscription for free, that’s a $100+ value, all they have to do after purchasing the tablet is keep the receipt and submit a valid Offer Claim Form. Instructions on how to do that are live on Samsung’s Promotions website, it only takes a few steps to claim the incentive, which will make for pretty good entertainment when you’re in for the holidays and just want to stream stuff all day.

Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ screen susceptible to cracking for no apparent reason?

Samsung has made two smartphones in a single year with a display that curves to both sides, but this particular screen technology is rather young and is prone to issues that you wouldn’t see on regular displays. Many users of the Galaxy S6 edge had reported that their phone’s display had cracked for no apparent reason when sitting idle; we didn’t cover the issue given it wasn’t as widespread, but it seems the same problem might have carried over to the Galaxy S6 edge+ as well.

Now, the evidence for this is based on a single device – one of us here at SamMobile heard from a friend that the display on their Galaxy S6 edge+ had cracked without the phone having been dropped or damaged in any other way. This particular unit would get rather hot from time to time, so heat could be one possible reason since a lot of Galaxy S6 edge users had said their device was being charged when the damage occurred. Some users have also said touching the phone with cold hands when it was somewhat hot could also be the reason, but in either case, it’s rather strange that a smartphone display can start cracking up like this.

We have reached out to Samsung for an official statement on the matter and are waiting to hear back. In the meantime, if you have a Galaxy S6 edge or Galaxy S6 edge+ that developed cracks on the display’s glass while sitting idle, let us know in the comments below.

The Galaxy A9 stars in a video alongside the Galaxy A7 2016

We just saw Samsung detail the upcoming Galaxy A9 on its official Chinese blog, and the device has now been revealed in its entirely thanks to a video that compares the Galaxy A9 and the new Galaxy A7 2016 side by side. The Galaxy A9 is rather huge thanks to the 6-inch display, and it features the same metal and glass construction as Samsung’s flagships and the Galaxy A 2016 lineup.

The Galaxy A9 in the video is a working unit, though it seems the phone’s user interface is a tad different from Samsung’s regular interface. Well, to be precise, the icons on the homescreen are flatter and not similar to what we see on Samsung’s current handsets. It could be because of a third-party theme, or maybe it’s because Samsung has modified the interface for the 6-inch display on the Galaxy A9 (the former is most likely the case.)

Check out the video below to see the Galaxy A9 in action. It features a 6-inch Full HD display, Snapdragon 620 CPU, 3GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel rear camera, an 8 MP front camera, a 4,000 mAh battery, a fingerprint scanner, and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Could it be your next Samsung phone? Let us know in the comments!

Samsung posts details on the December security update for its devices

Samsung joined hands with other Android manufacturers earlier this year to follow Google’s new monthly security updates schedule, and the company launched a dedicated blog to detail the changes each of its security update brings to its devices. We saw the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ get a software update with the November security patch earlier this month, and Samsung is now detailing the security patches the next such update will bring to its flagship devices.

Of course, none of the information is particularly interesting for regular users, so the only thing to take away here is that Samsung is working hard to ensure its flagship devices are as secure as possible. In addition to the patches made by Google, the December update will also fix nine additional security vulnerabilities, which you can read about at the source link. The update itself hasn’t started rolling out yet, but that should change in the next week or so.

We have been hearing a lot about the Galaxy A9 in recent weeks, and a new leak has now revealed some interesting details on the upcoming handset. An image posted on Samsung China’s official Weibo account shows what looks like an official advertisement with the Galaxy A9, the Galaxy A5 2016 and the Galaxy A7 2016, along with a few specifications.

The Galaxy A9 will have a 6-inch display, something we already knew from an earlier leak, and it looks like it will have a giant battery. A 4,000 mAh unit to be exact – coupled with the Full HD display resolution and the Doze feature on Android Marshmallow (which the device will probably get as an update, if it doesn’t come with it preloaded out of the box), we would expect the Galaxy A9 to be able to last really long.

That would be in keeping with the best feature of the Galaxy A8: epic battery life. Also interesting is the fact that an 8-megapixel front camera is listed, which would be a first for a smartphone from the Korean giant. Oddly, there seems to be a 13-megapixel camera on the back; the Galaxy A8 has a 16-megapixel camera, but given its mediocre performance, we guess the downgrade on the A9 won’t really matter in the real world.

There’s still no word on when the Galaxy A9 will go official. It will probably be after the recently announced Galaxy A trio goes on sale, and we are likely to see more details on the handset crop up in the weeks leading up to an official launch.

Update: Well, it seems a full infographic detailing the Galaxy A9 has also hit the web. The Galaxy A9 will feature the Snapdragon 620 CPU clocked at 1.8GHz, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, a fingerprint scanner (with Samsung Pay support), and Android 5.1.1 (yep, users will have to wait for Android 6.0). An official announcement will supposedly take place later this month.

Samsung Galaxy S7 to feature pressure-sensing screen and retina scanner: WSJ

Starting with the Galaxy S6, Samsung rethought its smartphones and brought forward beautiful devices and a hugely improved software. The South Korean smartphone giant is expected to announce the Galaxy S7 during the last week of February 2016, and there have been a lot of reports regarding the features of the device. Now, Wall Street Journal is reporting that the Galaxy S7 will feature a pressure-sensing display, something similar to the 3D Touch technology used in the recent iPhones.

The publication, which has an excellent track record regarding technology products, states that the Galaxy S7 will also feature USB Type-C port along with fast charging technology, something we reported exclusively long back. Moreover, the report states that the Galaxy 7 will have an improved camera and a design that’s largely similar to the Galaxy S6, but there will be no camera hump on the back. Apparently, “some versions” of the device will also feature a retina scanner, and the device will be announced during MWC 2016, and it will hit the market sometime in mid-March.

Now here’s the exciting bit. The WSJ is also reporting that the variants of the Galaxy S6 with a non-curved display is likely to have expandable storage (yes, a microSD card slot). The Galaxy S7 is expected to feature a Super AMOLED display, Android 6.0 Marshmallow, an Exynos 8890 processor (or a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC in some variants), 4GB RAM, fast wireless charging, and LTE Cat. 12 connectivity. Are you excited about the Galaxy S7?

Samsung’s CEO meet may focus on auto business prospects

According to KoreaHerald, Samsung’s top executives are set to attend a meeting this week where they will discuss the company’s global strategy. Among the most important attendees are the three chief executives: Kwon Oh-hyun, Boo-keun, Shin Jong-kyun, and last but not least, the company’s vice chairman, Lee Jae-yong. The global strategy conference is usually held twice a year so the news shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. However, this time they will be debating about business in a low-growth era, which suggests a shift in the strategy in order to recover from losses.

A hot topic in this meeting will be the auto parts business, which seems to be a source of profit this year. As a matter of fact, the South Korean giant is already making a team for handling the development of next-generation auto components and even big companies such as Audi are gaining Samsung’s business. It’s a very big field in which LG is also starting to get into so Samsung’s endeavors will not be met without competition.
