Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro specs and images surface courtesy of TENAA

We exclusively confirmed a few months ago that Samsung is working on Pro versions of the Galaxy C5 and Galaxy C7, and while both handsets have reared their heads in leaks since then, there isn’t a lot of information available about either phone. That’s changing today, at least when it comes to the Galaxy C7 Pro – SlashLeaks has purportedly gotten hold of the device’s images and specs through Chinese regulation authority TENAA’s website.

Unsurprisingly, the Galaxy C7 Pro looks like the Galaxy C9 Pro, and the C5 Pro should have the same design as well. The specs are said to include a 5.7-inch Full HD display, an octa-core processor clocked at 2.2 GHz (the Snapdragon 625), 4GB of RAM (not 6GB, unlike the C9 Pro), 32/64GB of internal storage, and a 3,300 mAh battery. There is a 16-megapixel camera on the front and back, another similarity with the C9 Pro. The C7 Pro will run Android 6.0.1 out of the box; the handset will be 7.0 mm thick and weigh 170 grams, which is certainly on the higher end of the spectrum.

There is no official word on when the Pro iterations of Samsung’s metallic mid-range smartphones will be launched. It’s just mid-December right now so there is a chance they could be unveiled before the month is over, unless Samsung is saving this month for the launch of the Galaxy A (2017) lineup.

Download the wallpapers from the Galaxy C9 Pro

As recently reported, the Galaxy C5 Pro (SM-C5010) and Galaxy C7 Pro (SM-C7010) have been delayed and will not be releasing in China this month. The devices will instead hit shelves sometime in January, 2017. With these delays, it is expected that the Galaxy C9 Pro will also be pushed back.

There is some good news for anyone who was anticipating picking up a Galaxy C9 Pro. While you may not be able to actually get your hands on the device until next month, you can view and download the beautiful wallpapers that will be on the Galaxy C9 Pro. This has got to be the next best thing besides getting the device itself, right?

According to the confirmed specs of the Galaxy C9 Pro, the handset is expected to boast a Snapdragon 653 processor with an astronomical 6GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage and come pre-loaded with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Fueling the device is a whopping 4,000 mAh battery which is charged via a USB Type-C connection. The Galaxy C9 Pro will sport 16-megapixel rear and front-facing cameras and is expected to come with a price tag of CNY 3,199 ($475)

Enjoy the wallpapers.

Galaxy S8 fingerprint scanner possibly announced today by Synaptics

The Galaxy S8 is most likely going to ditch the home button which presents a challenge: where to put the fingerprint sensor? We’ve already reported that the Galaxy S8 is going to be the first smartphone to feature optical fingerprint recognition, meaning that the scanner will be embedded underneath the display itself. Synaptics has long supplied Samsung with fingerprint scanners and the company just announced its Natural ID optical-based fingerprint sensors for smartphones and tablets.

The new Synaptics FS9100 optical fingerprint sensor family promises high-resolution scanning through 1mm of full cover glass. This allows manufacturers to remove the home button and offer a clean, button-free industrial design. These sensors have been designed for placement under the cover glass, including 2.5D curved glass, in the front bottom bezel of a mobile device. Synaptics also says that the FS9100 “excels with wet finger performance” and that it’s scratchproof and waterproof as it’s protected by glass.

This might very well be the fingerprint scanner that Samsung picks for the Galaxy S8 but there’s one thing in the press release that stands out. Synaptics says that mass production of this new fingerprint sensor is going to start in Q2 next year. Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S8 in February next year so it’s unclear right now whether the sensor will be ready in time for the Galaxy S8 release.

Samsung will always have the option to source this crucial component from another supplier or just make the scanner itself, recent reports have suggested that Samsung does intend to start making its own fingerprint scanners.

Samsung to bring Galaxy Note 7′s Y-OCTA display to the Galaxy S8

Samsung introduced the Y-OCTA display technology with the Galaxy Note 7 earlier this year. The technology enables the company to cut down on production costs for the display and also make the device slimmer. Instead of having a film under the display glass for touch recognition in devices with curved displays like the Galaxy S7 edge, a Y-OCTA display has its touch sensors attached to the display during the manufacturing process.

This means that there’s no additional film underneath the display glass so the device can be a hair slimmer. The electrodes that were placed between the films earlier are passivated to the display instead. Y-OCTA cuts production costs for Samsung as well since the company no longer needs to import touch films from third-party suppliers for use in displays.

A new report out of Korea claims that Samsung is going to use the Y-OCTA display technology for the Galaxy S8 as well. It’s also claimed that the Y-OCTA display will be limited to the smaller of the two Galaxy S8 models. Rumor has it that the Galaxy S8 will be available with 5.7-inch and 6.2-inch displays. The handset is expected to feature a bezel-less design which would allow for a bonkers screen-to-body ratio.

Samsung is due to unveil the Galaxy S8 at the Mobile World Congress 2017 in February.

[Poll] Do you use the Pro mode on your Samsung phone’s camera?

One of the main features people look for when purchasing a new smartphone is a high-quality camera. For as long as I can remember, Samsung’s been competing with the big dogs in the shooter department — and it’s latest smartphones are no exception.

The Galaxy C9, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge all feature fantastic sensors, which are capable of capturing amazing photographs. However, that’s only half of the story; software plays a pretty big part in snapping images too.

Most users shoot in Auto, which, as its name suggests, automatically adjusts exposure, ISO and a vast array of other settings based on your environment to let you take the best possible picture of your subject in its surroundings.

Unfortunately, the Auto mode has always been the part of the equation that’s let smartphone manufacturers down. This has resulted in many mobile photographers using Pro modes to alter their camera settings manually.

It’s now reached a point though where Auto shooting is very accurate — especially on Samsung’s flagship devices — which has led to many people ditching the Pro option. This bodes the question: Do you use the Pro mode on your Samsung phone’s camera?

I’d love to know if you do, so be sure to drop a vote in the poll below. If you’re feeling talkative, you can also take to the comments section to share a more detailed response. I’ll be replying to comments over on Twitter too, so make sure you reach out.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Black color variant of the Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro spotted

Plenty of images of the upcoming Galaxy C9 Pro smartphone were leaked in the recent past along with its specifications and price. Now, an alleged high-resolution image of the Black variant of the Galaxy C9 Pro has surfaced the Internet.

We can clearly notice the new antenna design in the leaked image as well as the phone’s model number (SM-C9000) on its back. The Galaxy C9 Pro received its Wi-Fi certification last week, and it also received a hands-on treatment. It seems like Samsung will offer the device in Black, Gold, and Rose Gold.

Samsung considers offering Secure Folder as a downloadable feature on the Galaxy S7 with Android 7.0 update

One of the most interesting features of the Galaxy Note 7 was Secure Folder, a place where users could hide all their personal files including images, videos, PDFs, and documents among other things. Authenticated users could access information stored in the Secure Folder through fingerprint or iris on the Galaxy Note 7. Now, Samsung is considering to bring the same feature to the Galaxy S7 shortly.

According to a message that we received from Samsung under the Galaxy Beta program, the company is considering to offer the Secure Folder feature as a downloadable service for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge devices running Android 7.0 Nougat. The feature will be available from the Galaxy Apps store, but Samsung hasn’t specified the exact time frame for its release as of now. Understandably, authentication using the iris scanner will not be present since the Galaxy S7 lacks one.
