Samsung hanged the Galaxy Book Pro at a bus stop Monday morning

If you happened to have crossed Fashion Street by London’s Spitalfields Market earlier this week, you might have witnessed one of Samsung’s most unique out-of-home advertisements yet. Monday morning, using thin wire, Samsung suspended the Galaxy Book Pro between two sheets of glass at a bus station for everyone to see. And for anyone who didn’t know what they were looking at, the ad explained that it’s the Galaxy Book Pro. A laptop that’s ‘Thin as a phone’ and ‘Powerful as a PC.’

The idea was to showcase just how thin the new Galaxy Book lineup is. Samsung’s new Galaxy Book Pro — the model that was used for the ad — measures 8.5mm in thickness when fully open, and indeed, it looks very slim inside the glass enclosure that’s usually reserved for flat posters.

Technically speaking, Samsung, in partnership with Clear Channel Advertising, made a 3D poster using an actual Galaxy Book Pro in an attempt to ‘challenge perceptions’ and demonstrate that an advertising space can be a product showcase.

The Galaxy Book Pro was replaced by a boring poster at lunchtime

Samsung’s initiative was unique and creative, but sadly, the Galaxy Book Pro wasn’t kept behind glass for very long. This one-of-a-kind showcase, as Samsung describes it, was taken down at lunchtime on the same day it was put up. The thin Galaxy Book Pro was replaced by an even thinner poster, mere hours after it made it in the spotlight.

Samsung didn’t explain why this creative ad — which came in as a surprise, to begin with — was taken down so shortly, but the company hopes that it brought a smile to people’s faces.

And in a way, it feels like bringing the ad down this early defeated the original purpose of challenging perceptions and turning an advertising space into a product showcase.

It was cool while it lasted, and hopefully, the Galaxy Book Pro left a good impression on the few people who saw it to want to buy it. Samsung is selling the Galaxy Book, the Galaxy Book Pro, and the Galaxy Book Pro 360 for the starting prices of £699, £1,099, and £1,199, respectively.

Galaxy Watch Active 4 could have a 5nm SoC, flat screen, slimmer bezels

Samsung and Google confirmed yesterday that future Galaxy-branded smartwatches will no longer run Tizen OS, but instead they’ll adopt the Wear OS platform to deliver better app compatibility and support for third-party developers, and more. The companies haven’t revealed any hardware details, but according to at least one leaker — @UniverseIce — the Galaxy Watch Active 4 will see some drastic changes to the exterior design as well as the internal hardware.

The Galaxy Watch Active 4 will reportedly abandon the 2.5D glass panel covering the circular display, and instead it will feature a flat 2D panel, which begs the question of what will happen to the virtual bezel.

The physical (non-moving) bezel surrounding the active area of the display will be narrower, and the frame / chassis might be built from titanium alloy.

Samsung might finally be ready to introduce a new chipset

Samsung’s been using the 10nm-based Exynos 9110 chipset for its entire smartwatch lineup ever since the original Galaxy Watch was introduced in 2018. The company has released several smartwatch models under the Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active brandings, all of which were powered by the same silicon.

The company might now finally be ready to switch to a newer solution, and although details are missing, the source claims that the upcoming wearable chipset will be manufactured on a 5nm process. This should make the SoC more powerful, but more importantly, it should improve energy efficiency and could contribute to increased battery life on a single charge.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 will presumably boast the same 5nm silicon and share other hardware similarities with the Active variant, though it will probably retain a physical rotating bezel.

Kidoodle.TV is now available for Samsung TV Plus on mobile

Canada-based A Parent Media Co. has announced the release of its family-friendly streaming platform Kiddodle.TV for Samsung TV Plus on mobile. Kidoodle.TV has been a part of the Samsung TV Plus portfolio since last year, but it has so far been limited to Samsung smart TVs. The platform is now available for select Galaxy smartphones and tablets via Samsung TV Plus on mobile.

Kidoodle.TV is a linear channel that brings a library of more than 25,000 episodes. The platform can be accessed on eligible Galaxy smartphones and tablets through the Samsung TV Plus app that’s available for download from the Galaxy Store and Google Play Store. With the Samsung TV Plus app is installed, viewers will be able to find Kidoodle.TV on channel 4304.

A Galaxy S21 Olympic Games Edition is happening, unless it gets canceled

Samsung and Japanese mobile operator NTT Docomo have announced a new special edition Galaxy S21 model to celebrate the upcoming Olympics. The new phone variant was presented as part of the mobile operator’s New 2021 collection of smartphones, and while it doesn’t have an official launch price just yet, prospective buyers can now make a reservation in anticipation of its release.

The Galaxy S21 5G Olympic Games Edition is based on the standard Galaxy S21 5G model, meaning it has a 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED display. The phone is equipped with 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM, and while the official landing page for the Olympic Games Edition makes no mention of the chipset inside the device, it’s likely the Snapdragon 888 solution, given that the standard Galaxy S21 5G in Japan is powered by the same Qualcomm chipset.

The limited edition device is planned to go on sale in a single color option featuring a dark blue back panel with a golden camera housing and metal frame.

Second time’s the charm? Let’s hope it won’t get canceled

As some of you might recall, this isn’t the first Galaxy phone that was created as a celebration for the 2020 Olympic Games. Samsung originally planned to release the Galaxy S20+ 5G as an Olympic Games Edition device last year, but it was canceled after the Tokyo 2020 Olympics got postponed.

The Olympic Games are now supposed to take place in July-August 2021, but Tokyo doctors are reportedly calling for the event to be postponed once again due to concerns related to COVID-19.

We’ll have to wait and see if history repeats itself in 2021. Assuming that the Tokyo Olympic Games will be canceled, the Galaxy S21 5G Olympic Games Edition might suffer the same fate as the Galaxy S20+ variant. Hopefully this won’t be the case and Samsung / NTT Docomo will release the limited edition Galaxy S21 5G regardless of when the Olympic Games might take place. Here’s hoping for the best.

Samsung has launched Boost, a new premium service bundle for flagships

Samsung UK is launching a new bundle of premium services for existing Galaxy S21 customers and possibly future flagship owners. The premium service bundle is worth £250 and, according to Samsung, it’s meant to complement existing Samsung services including Samsung Health, Samsung Pay, and SmartThings.

Unlike the aforementioned Samsung services, however, Samsung Boost is a collection of premium services offered by other companies such as Adobe and Google. The bundle includes:

  • 2 months of free access to Adobe Spark Post and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
  • 3 months of access to Antstream Arcade, Fiit, Google Play Pass, and Readly
  • 4 months of Deezer HiFi and YouTube Premium
  • 6 months of Calm Premium
  • 600 Google Play Points that can be used for in-app purchases or Google Play Credit

The Samsung Boost bundle is now available for Galaxy S21 series customers

The new Samsung Boost premium service bundle is now available to customers in the UK and Ireland, as long as they own one of the Galaxy S21 5G models. The bundle will also be available for future Galaxy S21 buyers who will acquire the flagship by October 31, 2021.

Samsung hasn’t revealed any launch details for the Boost bundle in other markets, but if the initiative proves to be successful, we’re guessing that the company will bring it to more customers outside the UK.

As for other devices, the company claims that the service is expected to expand to Samsung’s future flagship portfolio. In other words, it’s almost a guarantee that the Samsung Boost bundle will be available to future Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 customers later this year.

Snapdragon-powered Galaxy S20 FE LTE is official at a new low price

Samsung has officially announced and released the Qualcomm-powered Galaxy S20 FE LTE in Vietnam earlier today, weeks after the company had silently listed the same device on its German portal. The reworked version of the Galaxy S20 FE LTE is now available for purchase online in Vietnam through Samsung’s e-shop, where it’s being sold in two color options: Mint Green and Navy Blue.

The new version has 256GB of built-in storage and 8GB of RAM. More importantly, even if the device is limited to 4G connectivity, it abandons the Exynos 990 chipset in favor of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 solution. It delivers better performance, thermals, and improved battery life.

The Snapdragon-powered Galaxy S20 FE LTE might soon be coming to a Samsung shop near you

Samsung is now offering the Snapdragon-enabled Galaxy S20 FE LTE with 256GB of memory in Vietnam for 15,490,200 VND, or the rough equivalent of $672. That’s about $20 cheaper than the Exynos-powered variant with 128GB of storage, which makes the newer model an even better value proposition than before.

The launch of this new Galaxy S20 FE LTE variant in Vietnam — and previously Germany — should be proof enough that Samsung intends on releasing this new variant in more markets, possibly even globally. When and where it will be sold next, we do not know, but we’ll keep you posted as soon as more details emerge. Until then, you might also want to keep an eye on your local Samsung e-shop because you never know when the new Galaxy S20 FE variant might pop up on the virtual shelves.

Galaxy Z Roll might be Samsung’s next foldable smartphone lineup

The Galaxy Z Roll seems to be the next big addition to Samsung’s foldable smartphone portfolio. And much like that name suggests, it would appear that the South Korean giant is counting on truly flexible displays for the next iteration of its foldable devices. You know, the kind of thing LG was so adamant to bring to the market before its smartphone business folded under the weight of minimal expectations?

In any case, Samsung has now moved to secure a trademark for the term Galaxy Z Roll with the European Union Intellectual Property Office. First spotted by Galaxy Club, the IP filing has some way to go before that motion is sanctioned. Which would suggest that even if the Galaxy Z Roll was already a done deal, it might not be part of Samsung’s summer launch plans.

Will Samsung keep steamrolling smartphone competition, though?

Speaking of which, the Seoul-based company has just put out a number of jaw-dropping teasers hinting at what’s next for its mobile devices. And what’s next seems to be pretty bonkers by any imaginable metric. As things stand right now, a rollable smartphone would cement Samsung’s iconic status that the mobile pioneer earned over the course of the last decade and a half.

But whether the company manages to maintain that momentum moving forward remains to be seen. Particularly given how much more difficult its life is going to be once Apple remembers to release a foldable of its own, which is supposedly meant to happen any year now.

Galaxy A50 software updates: Will this 2019 phone get Android 12?

Samsung’s policy of three major OS upgrades for many of Galaxy devices was a game-changer, and it’s a policy that other manufacturers are now starting to copy (but not doing it very well). Three generations of Android OS and One UI updates are promised to every flagship Galaxy phone and tablet launched 2019 onwards. Select mid-range devices are eligible as well, including recent ones like the Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A72 and their predecessors.

But what about the Galaxy A50, the phone that rejuvenated Samsung’s mid-range lineup back in 2019 and went on to sell incredibly well across the globe? Following Google’s official announcement of the first public Android 12 beta for Pixel and other non-Galaxy smartphones, many Galaxy A50 owners have been asking if their device is eligible for the latest version of Android (and, consequently, One UI 4.0), and the answer will not please them.

Galaxy A50 will spend its remaining days on Android 11

The Galaxy A50 is not eligible to receive Android 12. Samsung’s guarantee of three generations of OS updates doesn’t extend to any 2019 phone that isn’t a flagship. Android 11 and One UI 3.x will be the final big upgrade for the Galaxy A50. It’s unfortunate, yes, especially considering the Galaxy A50 is more or less as powerful as the Galaxy A51, which will get both Android 12 and Android 13. But the capabilities of a smartphone have never been the deciding factor for the number of significant updates it will get, and the same applies here.

So, for the Galaxy A50, the future only holds security updates, which will continue to come in regularly for at least another year. Samsung could decide to treat Galaxy A50 owners with an update to version 3.5 of One UI that’s expected to debut with the new Galaxy flagships due for launch in the second half of the year, but that’s not written in stone just yet.

Check out the (continually updated) list of Galaxy devices that are guaranteed to get three generations of OS updates here.

Galaxy Tab S7 line picks up Quick Share improvements, May security patch

Just three weeks after seeing a major update that introduced a slew of new features and the April security patch, the Galaxy Tab S7 lineup is getting a new update that further enhances its security. Samsung has started rolling out the May 2021 security update for its latest flagship tablets in a huge number of European markets, with the new firmware sporting build number T875XXU2BUE2.

In addition to all the fixes included in the May security patch (details here), the update brings improvements to Samsung’s Quick Share feature, which has been a common theme across updates for various other Galaxy devices in the last few weeks. Finally, the update improves overall stability of functions – that’s a fancy way of saying that the tablet should run more stable across the board once the new firmware has been installed.

With the rollout of the new update starting out in almost two dozen countries at the same time, it shouldn’t be long before availability expands to cover the globe. Galaxy Tab S7 and Galaxy S7+ owners should be able to download the update over the air from their tablet’s Settings » Software update menu. As usual, the relevant firmware is also available in our firmware archive for anyone looking to manually upgrade their device to the latest software.

Galaxy Tab S7 family will get a new member soon

The Galaxy Tab S7 and Galaxy Tab S7+ are two of Samsung’s best ever Android tablets, and they will soon be joined by a mid-range variant which will be Samsung’s first Fan Edition tablet. The Galaxy Tab S7 FE will offer features like a 12.4-inch LCD display, S Pen support, a huge battery, and the Snapdragon 750G chipset, and an announcement is expected sometime in the next couple of months.
