Despite smaller battery, refurbished Galaxy Note 7 may not have a downclocked processor

Samsung is expected to officially launch the refurbished Galaxy Note 7 on July 7. Rumor has it that the device may be called the Galaxy Note FE or “Fan Edition.” Samsung is reportedly going to release this device in only a handful of markets, starting with its home country of South Korea.

The company hasn’t set up a new production line for the Galaxy Note FE. They are going to be refurbished units of the Galaxy Note 7 that just have a smaller battery. Everything else remains the same. It’s going to have the specs of the ill-fated flagship.

The Galaxy Note FE is going to have the same 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display, Samsung Exynos 8890 processor with 4GB RAM, 12-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera as the original Galaxy Note 7.

Samsung’s Exynos 8890 processor has a cluster of four custom and four ARM Cortex A53 cores to provide a mix of high performance and power efficiency. The Galaxy Note FE has been spotted on Geekbench today, the benchmark listing has detected the 1.6GHz clock speed of the power-efficient cluster.

What this suggests is that Samsung hasn’t decided to downclock the Exynos 8890 processor even though the Galaxy Note FE is going to have a smaller battery. It may be convinced that the processor does a good enough job of managing its power needs that there’s no need to downclock the chip and take a hit on performance.

The Galaxy Note 7 had a 3,500mAh battery while the Galaxy Note FE is expected to feature a 3,200mAh cell. Other than that, everything else will be the same, the Galaxy Note FE is even expected to be offered in the same colors as the original handset.

Trade-in your old phone and get up to $350 off the Galaxy S8 from Samsung

If you’re thinking about changing your smartphone and currently have one that’s still in working condition, you can trade it in and Samsung is going to give you up to $350 for your device which you can put towards the purchase of an unlocked Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+. This offer is only for customers in the United States.

Samsung is promising $300 in trade-in value for the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S7. If you have a Galaxy S7 edge, it’s going to fetch you the absolute maximum trade-in value of $350. Samsung is going to offer $200 for any other iOS or Android smartphone. All devices have to meet certain conditions before the trade-in value can be given to customers.

The company mentions in the terms and conditions that the device being traded in has to power on. It can have normal wear and tear but the device should not have a cracked screen, should not be bricked or blacklisted.

Samsung will assess all devices and it feels that a device doesn’t fulfill the conditions mentioned above, it will only provide $25 for that unit. The company also mentions in the T&Cs that customers who trade-in their device will not get it back under any circumstance.

The trade-in value that customers receive in exchange for their old device can then be instantly used towards the purchase of an unlocked Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+.

Samsung’s Galaxy S8 BOGO offer for T-Mobile available again

Samsung’s buy-one-get-one-free offer for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ on T-Mobile expired not too long ago and the company has decided to bring it back again. Customers can purchase either handset from T-Mobile right now and the company is going to refund them the cost of the second handset so it will essentially be free.

The way this offer works is that customers first purchase two new Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ phones by paying full price for them upfront. They also have to pay all applicable taxes. They then have to activate one of their new devices on Samsung.com within 14 days of purchase.

Once that’s done, Samsung is going to provide them a rebate for the less expensive of the two handsets minus taxes and fees on their original payment method. The rebate will arrive in up to 8 weeks after activation.

Since the rebate is being provided by Samsung and not T-Mobile, it’s only going to be refunded to the original payment method. Customers can not combine this deal with any other offer or promotion.

This is likely going to be a limited time offer but it’s unclear how long Samsung is going to keep it up this time around. If this interests you, better hurry and take advantage of it.

SamMobile Daily Recap: June 19, 2017 — Frame TV, Galaxy S8 Active and more!

Galaxy S8 Active referenced on Samsung’s website

The upcoming Galaxy S8 Active (SM-G892A) has been referenced in a document, which outlines all of the applications it will ship with, on Samsung’s website, leading us to believe that the handset’s launch is right around the corner.

Judging by recent leaks, the Galaxy S8 Active is simply a flat version of the Galaxy S8, equipped with a slightly thicker body that’s more resistant to knocks and bumps, and presumably compliant with the MIL-STD-810G standard of durability.

Not much is known about the handset’s internals, but we’re guessing they’re identical to the regular Galaxy S8, so it should come with a 5.8-inch AMOLED display, an Exynos 88955 processor and 4GB of RAM.

That said, we aren’t ruling out the possibility of the Galaxy S8 Active having a slightly larger 3,500mAh battery as Samsung has installed beefier cells in its Active-branded smartphones in the past.

With regards to availability, the Galaxy S8 Active is expected to launch exclusively through AT&T in the US, and as we’ve said in the past, the carrier typically launches its latest Active smartphones in June — so keep your eyes peeled.

Daily Deal: Take 30% off a SmartThings Hub

For a limited time only, you can pick up a second-generation SmartThings Hub from Amazon for $69.99 (30% off).  For those unfamiliar, the Hub is the centerpiece of the IoT household, connecting  a host of different appliances – kettles, speakers, locks and thermostats — to the internet, letting you automate how they work.

If you like the sound of this promotion and want to take advantage of it, hit the Buy Now button below. Unfortunately, Amazon only has a limited amount of inventory available for this specific deal, and once it’s gone, it’s gone — so it would probably be better to act sooner rather than later.
