Latest update limits color options for Galaxy S8′s navigation bar background

Samsung is pushing out a new software update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ right now, and it looks like the company has decided to limit the customization options for the navigation bar. Well, at least when it comes to the choice of color for the navigation bar’s background, as there is no longer an option to choose a custom color from an RGB scale. In fact, Samsung has switched up the available background colors, and the worst of it is that you can no longer use a fully black navigation bar background.

The new color choices are all light shades, and it’s unclear why Samsung suddenly decided the existing options weren’t good enough; it could be that Samsung is hoping the new colors will help keep visual uniformity across apps. But it’s disappointing to see, especially for someone like me who likes keeping black as the background for the navigation bar. The default white background doesn’t go too well with the primarily white background inside most apps, as the navigation bar stands out by not being as white as the rest of the interface.

Here’s a comparison of the old and new color options (old on the left, new on the right):

s8-navigation-bar-options

The update does bring a nice little icon to the navigation bar that lets you hide the navigation bar or lock it into place (the latter doesn’t work inside full-screen apps like Netflix or YouTube). Hopefully, Samsung will see the folly in limiting the customization options for the navigation bar background and bring them back in a future update. For those wondering, yes, the new update does bring the latest security patch. The update is available in a handful of markets right now and should be expanding to more countries in the coming days.

What’s your take on Samsung changing up the available colors for the navigation bar?

Samsung and LG IoT products may soon be able to communicate with each other

Samsung went big on the idea of Internet of Things (IoT). It acquired SmartThings way back in 2014 to bring IoT features to its appliances, home automation devices, TVs, smartphones, and more. Many brands, including Amazon, Apple, Google, IKEA, LG, Logitech, Philips, and Qualcomm, have jumped onto the IoT bandwagon by now. However, IoT products from these brands don’t play well with each other, and interoperability among IoT products needs a lot of improvement.

Now, it is being reported by The Korea Herald that Samsung and LG have decided to develop products that are certified by the Open Connectivity Foundation. Even though the OCF was formed last year, more than 300 brands have joined the foundation to improve interoperability of products. Samsung has reportedly started getting its air conditioners, refrigerators, and smartphones (including the Galaxy S8 and S8+) certified by the OCF, and LG has similar plans.

With two of the largest home appliances brands getting their upcoming products certified by the OCF, we might see other brands following the suit. The Open Connectivity Foundation develops specification standards and certifies IoT devices, which would make it easier for IoT products from different brands to talk to each other, making the life of a consumer easier. It is possible that consumers could be able to control an LG refrigerator from their Samsung TV in the future.

Broadcom, Intel, and Samsung were the founding members of Open Interconnect Consortium (OIC), which was established in 2014. However, shortly after, Broadcom left over disputes on how to handle intellectual property. The first version of specifications was released in September 2015. Early last year, Electrolux, Microsoft, and Qualcomm joined the consortium, and OIC changed its name to OCF. You can have a look at more than 300 brands that joined the OCF here.

Galaxy S8+ now receiving June security patch in Europe

Samsung has started rolling out a new maintenance update for the Galaxy S8+ (SM-G955F) in Europe. In addition to all of the patches included in this month’s security release, the upgrade transports a couple of new features to the handset, including new background colors for the navigation bar.

There’s no denying the fact it’s a relatively minor update in terms of what features brings it to the table, but it’s still nice to see the firm sticking to its word of distributing monthly security upgrades — and as far as they go, it’s a pretty big one, addressing a total of 96 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) in the Android OS.

Unfortunately, we don’t know exactly what the vulnerabilities are. In fact, most of them are listed as “privately disclosed,” because there are some bugs that may not have been discovered by hackers yet, and they may attempt to exploit them before the firmware is pushed out.

As always, to see if the OTA is ready for your Galaxy S8+, head into Settings » About Device » Download Updates Manually. Alternatively, you can wait until you receive a notification instructing you to download the update; however, there’s a good chance that could take a little longer to arrive.

After partnering with X Games and Live Nation to deliver 360-degree live streaming of extreme sports and music concerts, Samsung has announced that it has partnered with BuzzFeed and NowThis to deliver more engaging and immersive 360-degree content, thereby extending its lead in the virtual reality market. Samsung hopes that it can shape a new era of content consumption and journalism, thanks to its new partnerships. The company thinks that the upcoming 360-degree content will inspire consumers to create and share their own 360-degree moments.

Our 360-degree and virtual reality technologies enable more interactive storytelling to help consumers gain a deeper understanding of the world. These partnerships are a testament to our dedication to reimagining the way moments are captured and shared, and making these immersive experiences accessible to more consumers,” said Younghee Lee, CMO and Executive Vice President, Samsung Electronics.

We’re excited to partner with Samsung to give our audience engaging, social 360-degree video content. Samsung’s 360-degree technology will enable BuzzFeed to use our ‘test and learn’ strategy to unlock new kinds of shareable content, while learning more about how audiences are consuming and using it,” said Matthew Henick, Head of Development, BuzzFeed.

We’ve seen a ton of success with our millennial audience delivering the content they want, on the platforms they want, and in the formats they want. Integrating Samsung’s 360-degree technology allows us to take our storytelling capabilities a step further and give our audience a deeper look into places and experiences they might not otherwise see, through the NowThis lens,” said Christian Tom, Publisher, NowThis.

Update to Galaxy S8 and S8+ on T-Mobile and Verizon bring support for Android Pay

After a recent update that brought May 2017 Android security patch to the Galaxy S8 and S8+ on T-Mobile and Sprint, a new update is being rolled out to the devices. This new update, which is now being rolled out to the Galaxy S8 and S8+ on T-Mobile’s and Verizon’s networks, brings support for Android Pay. There are some bug fixes and improvements to Wi-Fi calling and Visual Voicemail apps.

Galaxy S8 and S8+ users on T-Mobile’s and Verizon’s networks can now use Android Pay for easy, fast, and secure payments. Although Google’s mobile payment service competes with Samsung Pay, users get to choose which one suits them better. Android Pay allows users to add their credit, debit, gift, and loyalty cards for payments in physical and online stores as well as inside apps that support it.

Besides Android Pay, Verizon’s Galaxy S8 and S8+ get minor Bixby enhancements. Icons for reminders and Bixby Vision are now present on the top right corner of the screen, making it easier for users to access them. Verizon has also included a couple of bug fixes which should prevent the Samsung Notes app from crashing. There should be fewer Bluetooth disconnections when paired with the Gear S3.

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ top consumer ratings in the US

Samsung’s latest smartphones, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, earned top ratings in a recent US consumer smartphone review, reveals The Investor. The handsets received 82 points each in the Consumer Reports survey, which was the highest number tallied, followed by the Galaxy S7 edge with 77 points. The LG G6 came in fourth.

It’s believed that the firm’s ability to bundle top-notch cameras, gorgeous displays and hefty batteries in its smartphones is the reason they “excel at nearly everything” and are a clear favorite among consumers. Its flagship devices are also competitively priced, offering impressive internals for a somewhat modest fee.

For those unaware, the Galaxy S8 is Samsung’s current leading smartphone. It packs a 5.8-inch Infinity Display, an Exynos 8895/Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 12MP rear-facing camera and a 3,000mAh. The Galaxy S8+, on the other hand, sports almost identical internals, though it has a larger 6.2-inch panel and a 3,500mAh cell.

We’d love to know: did you pick up a Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+? If so, be sure to let us know where you’re based, what color variant you opted for, how long ago you purchased it and whether you are pleased with how it’s performing in the comments section down below, or over on Facebook or Twitter.
