Possible Galaxy X prototype surfaces at Wi-Fi Alliance

Over at the Wi-Fi Alliance, an unusual Samsung device just received the certification required for commercial use. The device carries model code SM-G888No, which fits with information we received about a foldable device carrying a model number in the same range.

The certification document itself does not reveal any interesting details about the SM-G888N0, except for the curious fact it runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Even by Samsung’s standards, it is late to release a device running on this older Android version, except, of course, when the device in question is a prototype anyway.

Almost a year ago, another device in this same series, the SM-G880, popped up, and we have since learned that that phone was codenamed Haechi. Haechi is a mythical beast in Chinese and Korean folklore: a unicorn with a lion’s head. The name does fit nicely for a device that can have multiple appearances, such as a smartphone that folds out and becomes a tablet.

Though we are not one hundred percent sure, we do assume the SM-G888 is a further-developed variant of the same device, and its visit to the Wi-Fi Alliance comes right at the time when multiple rumors suggest Samsung’s first foldable device is indeed being tested, possibly even seeing a very limited release later this year, even if broader commercialization won’t happen anytime soon.

[Poll] You need to read this before you decide what color your Galaxy S8 is going to be

Samsung has started taking pre-orders for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in several markets across the globe. It’s going to release the new flagship on April 21 (and on April 28th in Europe). If you’re planning to buy one there’s a big decision that you need to make. You need to decide which color you’re going to opt for.

Customers in the United States can choose from Orchid Gray, Midnight Black and Arctic Silver colors. In other markets they will also have options that include Maple Gold and Coral Blue.

No matter what color you choose, the handset is going to look the same from the front because of the very good decision that Samsung made to use a black front on every color variant of the Galaxy S8. The black front does a great job of hiding the array of sensors on the front and focusing your attention on the almost bezel-less and absolutely gorgeous Infinity Display.

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ In Midnight Black

galaxy-s8-s8+-42

It goes without saying that this is the color that most customers will likely opt for. Black is the most sought after of colors when it comes to premium smartphones, and Samsung’s Midnight Black color is rich and deep which makes it look really nice and premium. The frame will be black as well which will only add to the overall premium and sleek look of the handset.

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in Orchid Gray

galaxy-s8-orchid-gray

You should consider this color variant if you’re in the mood to try something new. Many of us have owned a black handset at some point in our lives so it’s good to change it up sometimes. It’s a nice shade of gray that will cater to both gentlemen and ladies as it hits a sweet spot. It’s much better than the conventional gaudy gold color option which Samsung has wisely decided not to offer with its new flagship.

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in Arctic Silver

galaxy-s8-arctic-silver

Gone are the days of pure white smartphones. You don’t get such simple color options anymore. If you’re looking for something like that then opt for the Arctic Silver color variant. The silver color itself is quite strong and looks very stylish, although it also shoots off reflections happily which many might find distracting at times.

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in Coral Blue

s8-feature-3

Samsung’s Coral Blue color proved to be a hit with the Galaxy Note 7 last year, so much so that it decided to launch this color option for the Galaxy S7 edge as well. The company is predictably offering it with the new flagship and it looks just as nice, if not better, than it did on its predecessor. This will be one of the safest color choices for the Galaxy S8, especially for those looking for a color not commonly seen on smartphones yet.

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in Maple Gold

galaxy-s8-maple-gold

This is not your average gaudy gold hue. It’s a more subdued shade of gold. Samsung had to offer this color option as gold tends to perform particularly well in markets across Asia. It might be a bold choice for someone who hasn’t carried a gold smartphone before but at least its understated appearance works in its favor.

No matter which color option you choose, you’ll want to protect your Galaxy S8 inside a case, given the fact that its metal and glass construction will be prone to scuffs, bumps, and scratches easily. So don’t forget to check out our list of the best cases for the Galaxy S8.

Have you decided which color you’re going to opt for? Vote below and let us know in the comments below what do you think about the options Samsung is offering with the Galaxy S8.

Exclusive: The SM-G892A is the Galaxy S8 Active for AT&T, codenamed Cruiser

Did you think Samsung wouldn’t be launching an Active variant of the Galaxy S8, because the S8′s beautiful design just does not warrant being modified? It was certainly something some of us here at SamMobile had been thinking, but it looks like Samsung’s Active line of smartphones will continue this year. The Galaxy S8 Active is in the works, has model number SM-G892A, and is codenamed Cruiser.

Why Cruiser? Well, according to Wikipedia, cruiser “came to be a classification for the ships intended for cruising distant waters, commerce raiding, and scouting for the battle fleet” in the middle of the 19th century, and the part about cruising distant waters is probably the main reason for the codename. Active variants of Samsung’s Galaxy S flagships have always have larger batteries, and maybe Cruiser is meant to portray that it can walk the extra mile without needing refuelling with a charger. A cruiser is also the “largest and most powerful surface combatant”, and Samsung’s latest Active device is certainly going to be strong and quite large.

Of course, it remains to be seen what kind of ruggedness the Galaxy S8 Active will carry, and just how Samsung will go about adding the rugged elements to the sleek and beautiful design of the S8. MIL-STD-810G standard compliance (in addition to IP68 certification) is pretty much a given, but what would be interesting to see is whether the S8 Active will have an Active key like its predecessors in addition to the Bixby button.

Oh, and for those wondering, it does look like the Active variant of the S8 will be exclusive to AT&T, although we can always hope the Active line will finally break that exclusivity (or at least get Gear VR support). Samsung usually unveils Active handsets in June, so there is still some time to go before the Galaxy S8 Active goes official. We’ll be sure to update you with any new information on the rugged handset.

Samsung’s aim for perfection seems to have gotten weak with the Galaxy S8

The Galaxy S7 edge and Galaxy Note 7 had something in common: They were the most perfect smartphones Samsung had created for their time (not counting the Note 7′s battery drama), after years of letting us down with something or the other. They were particularly impressive after the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. Samsung, in a bid to change its smartphone designs around, made a few compromises on the S6 and S6 edge, like removing the microSD slot and equipping the handsets with extremely small batteries.

But when you innovate, you have to be willing to make sacrifices, so many were forgiving of the shortcomings of the S6 and S6 edge. But now, two years later, and after two flagship phones that were top notch in nearly every aspect, the Galaxy S8 makes it look like Samsung is once again focusing on innovation at the expense of basic functionality. Those Infinity displays on the S8 and S8+ make them the most beautiful smartphones on the market, but there are quite a few aspects that make them a lesser package than the phones they will be succeeding.

galaxy-s8-s8+-106

Let’s start with the small batteries, something we have repeatedly been complaining about since the S8 and S8+ were announced. It’s almost like we’re back in the days of the S6 and S6 edge, with the S8 particularly having a very disappointing battery capacity. The S6 edge+ and Note 5 had 3,000 mAh batteries back in 2015, and while neither handset had issues with getting through to the end of the day, they weren’t featuring as powerful processors like the S8 and S8+, nor having to content with something like Bixby running in the background or Always On Display causing additional battery drain when the phones were sitting idle.

Yes, the Snapdragon 835 and Exynos 8895 are more efficient than any mobile chipset that has come before, the Galaxy S8′s official battery stats are not much worse than the S7′s, and Samsung’s new batteries will work as great a year later as on day one. But for consumers opting for the S8, the tiny battery will be a cause for concern. At best, they’d have to charge it every evening. At worst, they’d have to turn off features like Always On Display and try being off mobile data as much as possible. Either way, it will be a problem, and no matter how fast your phones might charge, there’s no replacement for a battery that can keep going for long on a single charge.

galaxy-s8-s8+-49

Now, about that fingerprint sensor. Everyone knows reaching it will be a difficult task on these tall phones, and Samsung has messed up big time here. The S8 and S8+ offer iris and facial recognition, but neither can be as fast or accurate as a fingerprint in every situation. Worse, you still need to wake the phone up before the phone starts scanning your eyes or your face. To add insult to injury, Samsung has made the fingerprint sensor a passive button, meaning it is always ready to detect your fingerprint and does not require a hard press anymore. It’s finally nice to see on Samsung’s flagship, but the company managed to enable this functionality right when it decided to put the fingerprint sensor out of reach.

Now, we come to the most offensive part: Bixby. Bixby is Samsung’s official entry into the virtual assistant race, and the company is promising a high level of functionality. But at this point, Bixby is far from reaching the potential Samsung thinks it will reach. First, there’s limited language support. Second, Bixby doesn’t even have support for voice control in an important market like the US at launch. I know “intelligent personal assistants” are a tough thing to crack, but maybe Samsung should have kept Bixby in the labs a little longer instead of launching it with limited functionality, especially since Bixby even has a dedicated button.

galaxy-s8-s8+-88

Like I said at the beginning of this article, taking giant steps forward sometimes requires leaving a few things behind. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ certainly have a lot going for them. Big, beautiful displays, noticeably improved cameras, the latest silicon, and even the ability to turn into a desktop computer. But the missteps are hard to ignore after something like the Galaxy S7 edge, and it will be interesting to see where Samsung goes with the upcoming Galaxy Note 8.

For now, the perfection we saw in Samsung’s smartphone lineup seems to have fallen by the wayside, and the company would do well to hope the S8 and S8+ will offer an overall experience that makes it easy to overlook its shortcomings. You know, just like it did when it dazzled us with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge back in 2015.

What do you think of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+? Think Samsung should have worked harder on ironing out the kinks, or do you think the good things about the Galaxy S8 and S8+ outweigh the bad.

Samsung may not shutdown outdated LCD production lines just yet

Samsung has reportedly decided to delay its planned shutdown of outdated LCD production lines as it seeks to address the LCD panel shortage that it has been facing. LG’s display-making affiliate has reportedly taken the same decision as Samsung will now be sourcing LCD panels from LG Display. The two companies had also planned to shift some of those lines to OLED product but that appears to have been delayed as well.

Samsung Display was reportedly going to shutdown three outdated LCD production lines this year. It was even believed to be in talks with companies that disassemble and sell heavy equipment. It may have even been looking to sell one of its lines to a Chinse display manufacturer.

Things took a turn when Foxconn acquired Sharp, Samsung’s biggest supplier of LCD panels, and Sharp said that it would no longer supply the panels to Samsung. Another supplier, Sakai, also stopped supplying panels abruptly as it wanted to focus on its own TV venture.

Samsung then had to turn to LG Display in order to counter the supply shortage that it immediately faced. Since the company still has ample demand for LCD panels, both LG Display and Samsung have reportedly decided to not shutdown their outdated production lines until the situation improves or more suppliers come on board.

Samsung hires former Pentagon CIO as its executive vice president

Samsung has announced that it has hired Terry Halvorsen, former chief information officer of the US Department of Defence, as executive vice president for its mobile division. The former DoD official retired in February 2017 and used to provide advice and guidance on information technology policies and strategies.

It is being reported that Halvorsen will serve as an advisor to Shin Jong-Kyun, CEO of Samsung’s IT and Mobile Communication division. Before joining the US DoD, Halvorsen worked for the US Department of Navy as its CIO and as deputy commander of the US naval network warfare division. He is expected to help Samsung in expanding its presence in the network security segment in Europe and the US.

Samsung developed Knox security suite for its mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets, and is trying hard to partner with government and military agencies. The South Korean smartphone giant has been supplying its high-end Galaxy devices to the US DoD since 2014. However, it was revealed that its Tizen platform had a lot of security loopholes, and so did its SmartThings IoT platform.

Samsung is trying to improve its security solution and project the Galaxy S8 as the best smartphone for productivity and information security. The smartphone offers five user authentication features, and it is compatible with the DeX docking station that can turn the Galaxy S8 or S8+ into a desktop PC.
