Samsung launches a dedicated Newsroom for fans in Germany

Samsung has today announced that it’s launched a brand new Newsroom for its loyal fans in Germany. The firm will use the online portal to spread word about business insights, citizenship activities, company news and products announcements in German.

To be completely honest, we’re surprised that a German Newsroom wasn’t introduced earlier. Samsung has been operating in the Rhine-Main area for more than 30 years, and during this time the country has become one of its top five markets globally.

This is the seventh dedicated Newsroom that Samsung has released, following its Brazil, Korea, India, Vietnam, US and Global editions. The company has revealed that it plans to launch more versions of the portal next year to “share its stories with more regions, in more languages.”

Samsung may take the wraps off the Galaxy C5 Pro and Galaxy C7 Pro in December

If a new rumor posted on Weibo is anything to go by, it would appear that Samsung is preparing to take the wraps off the long-rumored Galaxy C5 Pro and Galaxy C7 Pro in December. We first found out about the handsets a couple of months ago when we exclusively reported that they were in the pipeline with the model numbers SM-C5010 and SM-C7010, respectively.

Unfortunately, we had little to go on with regards to specifications. However, this latest rumor suggests that the Galaxy C5 Pro will be powered by a Snapdragon 625 processor, while the Galaxy C7 Pro — which entered India for testing last month — is expected to pack a Snapdragon 626 chipset. Recent speculation also points towards both units packing at least 3GB of RAM, though that’s unconfirmed.

Bell rolls out another update for the Galaxy Note 7 to remind owners that it’s been recalled

It would appear that Canadians aren’t too keen on the idea of chopping in their now-recalled Galaxy Note 7 for a refund or replacement as Bell has started rolling out a second maintenance update for units in the region.

Unlike the previous upgrade, which limited the handset’s battery to 60 percent, this latest build introduces “indicators that encourage customers to contact Samsung regarding the replacement/return of affected devices.”

Although it’s unconfirmed, we expect other operators in Canada to follow in Bell’s footsteps by rolling out similar updates for their carrier-branded variants of the Galaxy Note 7 in the not-too-distant future.

Vodafone rolls out September security patch for the Galaxy S4 Mini in Europe

Vodafone has started rolling out the September security patch for the Galaxy S4 Mini in Europe, which leads us to believe that Samsung will follow suit in the near future with a similar update for the factory unlocked variant of the handset. As outlined in the changelog posted on the firm’s Security Blog almost two months ago, the upgrade transports a total of 66 patches for the Android OS.

In typical fashion, the Vodafone is distributing the firmware in stages across different regions. However, seeing as there aren’t took many people with a Galaxy S4 Mini operating on the network, you shouldn’t have to wait too long to start installing it. To see if it’s ready for your device, heading into Settings » About Device » Software Update » Update Now.

Samsung teams up with Microsoft to enable C# developers to build apps for Tizen

Samsung today announced a partnership with Microsoft on open source projects like .NET Core and Xamarin.Forms to provide .NET support for Tizen. What this means is that C# developers can now build apps for Samsung’s Tizen devices. Tizen is a nascent operating system based on Linux. It currently powers more than 50 million Samsung devices.

Samsung has released the first preview of Visual Studio Tools for Tizen which enables .NET developers to easily create applications for smart TVs, wearable devices like the Gear S3, Tizen-powered smartphones and Internet of Things devices. The first preview of Visual Studio Tools for Tizen supports mobile app development with device emulators as well as an extension to Visual Studio which provides full IntelliSense and debugging support.

“Through thoughtful and progressive collaboration with Microsoft, Samsung is expecting to create unique development experiences for both Tizen and C# developers, enriching the Tizen ecosystem,” said Seung-hwan Cho, Executive Vice President and Deputy Head of Software R&D Center at Samsung.

The company is going to add support for smart TVs, wearables and other IoT devices to this tool in future releases. Samsung confirms that Tizen’s .NET support is going to be officially released and shipping on its devices, including smart TVs, starting next year.

Sites don’t write themselves: writers deserve respect, too

We here at SamMobile are committed to chasing Samsung and its mobile endeavors as we dive deeper into the future, and it is tech that motivates us to do our jobs every day. But we, like you, are human; we too, have feelings, emotions, hopes, dreams, and yes, disappointments. And it is from that place of humanness, a place where all stand, that I write these words.

We appreciate our readership and want our readership to feel comfortable with commenting because we don’t write just to read ourselves. We love the feedback, and when we’re not chasing Samsung news (Samsung gives us some small slithers of time to slow down), we love to read and respond to commenters. And yet, at the same time, it can be said that, while we do our best to respect commenters (though not perfectly), we are often victims of the absence of respect ourselves.

Rest assured, it is far easier to have the news delivered each day than to be the messenger and have the responsibility of delivering it. Every news piece, every review, every how-to, and every opinion piece/column, are the result of hard work and deep commitment to the pursuit of Samsung and mobile tech.

And when insults such as “worthless article,” “idiot,” “loser,” and other insults in the name of profanity and obscenity are tossed around, it sends the message that the writers responsible for the content are not respected. It also sends the message that the 5-hour column, 3-hour how-to, or 10-12-hour gadget review are not respected, either, which gives a sense that our work has been for nought. It is easy to say “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me,” but the truth is that words hurt writers in the same way that they hurt commenters.

At the end of the day, every writer, as well as every commenter, comes from different backgrounds with different preferences and likes and dislikes. We all have different experiences, but those experiences offer a little “spice” in life (just as TouchWiz provides its own flavor for Android). All experience and insight should be appreciated and respected, regardless of whether or not one agrees or disagrees with it. If this is the case for commenters, how much more should respect be shown for the writers responsible for the site? After all, sites don’t write themselves.

No one wants to impede on any commenter’s right to share his or her view, but absolute freedom in our world does not exist. Commenters can’t disrespect writers with ad hominem attacks and personal character assassinations and assume there is no consequence for such action. We have shut down comments at the site before, and, despite our love to read them, may have no other choice but to do so again should we see need. But respect for another fellow human being, even if his or her like/dislike of Samsung is a turnoff, is the key to a peaceful co-existence of differing opinions.

We here at SamMobile provide a service, an effort of intense devotion, one that has been designed for the public good. But giving our all, only to receive character assassinations and degradation in return, are not in the interests of our readership or ourselves. And certainly, such vitriolic comments only fight against the public good. Android site Android Central has experienced the results of writer disrespect as of late, so we’re not alone in this fight.

We give our all, day, night, and every moment in-between, but what we ask from our readership is respect. As the top site on the Web for all things Samsung, we pledge to give our respect to you and ask for it in return. Google’s slogan has set the pace for respect (“Be Together, Not The Same”), and we want SamMobile to be the place where respect and discussion shake hands. In every post from here going forward, we ask that you would join with us to create a space where every view from every angle is cherished.

Samsung Group companies have cut 8,000 jobs over the past year

It was first reported late last year that Samsung was thinking about downsizing its workforce to cut down on costs. It was offering “average workers with mediocre performance” to take a sizable compensation in return for leaving the company. Data compiled by the Financial Supervisory Service reveals that four Samsung Group companies have cut over 8,000 jobs combined over the past year as the conglomerate deals with economic uncertainties. Samsung has been working hard over the past year to restructure the complex conglomerate so that it can focus more on core businesses.

The data shows that the total number of employees working at Samsung Electronics, Samsung Display, Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Samsung SDI in the July-September period was at 139,323 registering a 5.5 percent decline or about 8,117 jobs. Samsung Electronics, the conglomerate’s cash cow, cut the most number of jobs at 3,183 or 4.2 percent. Samsung Display reduced its workforce by 7.1 percent of 1,820 jobs. Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Samsung SDI both cut 1,311 and 1,803 jobs respectively. These group companies have all offered employees voluntary retirement programs in a bid to downsize and cut costs.

Samsung president reiterates that the company is not interested in building cars

There has been a lot of speculation over the past few years about Apple building an actual car. Similar things have also been said about Samsung but as far as tech companies go, it’s only Google that has built a proper prototype of its self-driving car and even that’s not going to be sold directly to the public. Samsung’s recent $8 billion acquisition of Harman International has got people talking about the company’s automotive plans again but a high-level Samsung executive has reiterated that the company doesn’t have any intention to build cars on its own.

“We don’t really want to build cars. It is important to recognize what we believe going forward is that we are not interested in the more traditional area of business or technology like powertrains or seats or bodies,” said Young Sohn, who is the president and chief strategy officer at Samsung, in an interview with Forbes. “We don’t add a lot of value in that area,” he said.

The claim that Samsung won’t be making its own cars comes after the company has spent the past year improving its position in the automotive components market. It’s working with German car manufacturers and other companies on components and software for self-driving cars. From the looks of it, Samsung wants cars of the future to run its software and use its components but for now it doesn’t appear to be interested in actually slapping its badge on a car and selling it directly to customers.
