Verizon rolls out Marshmallow OTA for the Galaxy Note Edge

Verizon has today started rolling out the long-awaited Marshmallow OTA update (VRU2CPD1) to all its carrier-branded variants of the Galaxy Note Edge located in the United States. Just like the upgrade it rolled out for the handset’s non-curved counterpart, the Galaxy Note 4, this release brings all of the changes you’d expect to find baked into Android 6.0.1, in addition to a plethora of additional bug fixes and stability improvements.

If you’d like to see if the upgrade is ready for your phone, simply head into Settings, followed by About Device, locate and select Software Update, then hit the Update Now button. Alternatively, you can wait until you receive a push notification prompting you to download and install the update from Samsung’s servers. However, it’s worth noting that you’ll need to have at least 50% of battery or be connected to the mains in order to receive the alert.

One tweet from Elon Musk was all it took for $580 million to disappear from Samsung SDI’s market cap

You might have read a report recently about Tesla being close to forming a partnership with Samsung SDI to source battery cells for the Model 3 sedan. If this was true, Samsung SDI would have captured a major chunk of Tesla’s business as the company ramps up production to meet the very impressive demand for its latest electric car. However, that’s not the case, as Tesla CEO Elon Musk clarified through a tweet. That single tweet led to Samsung SDI’s shares sinking more than 8 percent today and subsequently wiping $580 million from the company’s market capitalization.

Musk said in the tweet that Tesla is going to work with Panasonic exclusively for battery cells for the Model 3. While Samsung SDI lost $580 million as a result of this tweet, Panasonic’s shares surged during the same period and it added nearly $800 million to its market cap. There’s an old saying among equity market investors – “Buy the rumor, sell the news” – those who rode the surge on rumors of Samsung SDI getting in business with Tesla would have made a pretty penny if they got out of their positions before Musk sent it all crashing down.

Galaxy Note 7 rumored to be sporting an iris scanner, again

The Galaxy Note 7 is expected to break cover by early August. As we lead up to the big day, it’s only natural that we’ll encounter a handful of leaks pertaining to the device. While most recent leaks have been talking about the name of the handset (Galaxy Note 6, Galaxy Note 7, Galaxy Note 6 edge among a few others), we’ve sparingly heard about the hardware of the phablet. We exclusively broke the story about the Note 6/7 featuring an iris scanner, while also revealing that the device would be water resistant like the Galaxy S7 and the S7 edge.

We’re hearing about the iris scanner yet again, thanks to a couple of screenshots posted online. The screenshots are available in Korean and Chinese, which almost confirms its authenticity. The third onscreen option supposedly says “use iris”.

The screenshot reveals the settings page, where the option to use your fingerprint or PIN is also visible. Needless to say, these are pretty convincing screenshots and could be one of the highlight features of the upcoming Note flagship. Samsung recently released the iris scanner enabled Galaxy Tab Iris in India, so if these leaks are indeed true, the Galaxy Note 7 won’t be the company’s first device to utilize the sensor.

But with that in mind, we must be mindful that screenshots are not hard to doctor. So make sure you take this with a large dosage of salt. Do you think this is the real deal?

Samsung launches a new ‘tray-shaped’ wireless charger in Russia

Samsung has today launched a new wireless charger in Russia. However, unlike like the firm’s previous spherical Qi charging docks, this latest model takes the form of a tray, which the company claims can “harmoniously fit into any decor.” We’ll leave you to be the judge of that, though, as its appearance almost certainly won’t tickle everyone’s fancy.

Fortunately, there’s a method behind the sheer madness of the EP-PA710 wireless charger’s design. As you can see in the image above, the dock itself sports two platforms — one rectangular and one circular. Both of these pads have Qi charging technology embedded; meaning that the unit can simultaneously wirelessly charge two smartphones.

You may have noticed that there are two ports on the side of the device, too. One’s a slot for an AC Adapter, which provides the unit with power from the mains, while the other is a traditional USB port that can be used to charge a third device via a charging cable. This means that the EP-PA710 is capable of charging three handsets at a time: two wirelessly and one wired.

Unfortunately, no pricing information was provided in the listing on Samsung Russia’s website, but we’ll be sure to update this post as soon as the price tag is disclosed — so be sure to check back.

Samsung Display will start making its own photomasks

According to a new report, Samsung has decided to make and use its own photomasks in order to increase the competitive edge of its OLED products. Even though the company’s primary goal is to develop preceding technologies and use photomasks for the purpose of research and development, many believe that Samsung Display will ramp up the number of photomasks it produces in the future.

Samsung Display is believed to have finished making prototypes of photomasks for displays and even started production on a small scale. Photomasks are required in the designing of circuits during the production of displays and semiconductors, it’s produced by carving a clean disk with electronic circuits after putting it into a stepper. It’s only when light is penetrated through the photomask that’s placed on top of a display board or semiconductor wafer that the pattern of electronic circuits is formed. Having the ability to mass produce your own photomasks gives a company like Samsung Display the ability to optimize technologies on photomasks and related processes. This will ultimately help the company increase its competitive edge in markets for small and medium OLED products.

Galaxy S8 may feature a 4K UHD display

Samsung is expected to go with a 5.5-inch 4K Ultra High Definition display for its next flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8. This has been rumored in the past as well and at least for now the rumor mill is convinced that Samsung will make the jump to 4K with the Galaxy S8. Not only will such a high-resolution display give Samsung bragging rights but it’s also going to significantly improve the virtual reality experience.

The company has already demonstrated a 5.5-inch 4K UHD display with 806 ppi at the SID 2016 trade show, market analysts believe that the production yield rate for this display will improve in the coming months thus enabling Samsung to use it for the Galaxy S8. I should point out here that Samsung bumps up the quality of its displays ever two years, the Galaxy S3 had an HD display while the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S5 both had a full HD display and the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S7 both feature a Quad HD display. If history is going to repeat itself then we very well might see a 4K UHD display in the Galaxy S8.

Yet another Galaxy Note 7 teaser surfaces

Earlier today, we came across a rather sketchy looking teaser of the upcoming Note flagship, strongly suggesting that it will be known as the Galaxy Note 7. Well, apparently, that wasn’t it for the day as we’ve just received another teaser in our inbox with more or less the same markings, but with the words “Note the next Galaxy”, with the number 7 prominent in the background.

I’m personally in two minds about the authenticity of this particular leak, but it’s surely more convincing than the one we encountered earlier today. The Galaxy Note 7 will be unveiled in early August, so it shouldn’t be long before Samsung begins posting official teasers.

The jury is still out on whether (or why) Samsung wants to name its next flagship the Galaxy Note 7, but one possible reasoning is that the company wants it to be categorized with the Galaxy S7/S7 edge, thus avoiding confusion among fans.

Thanks, J.L!
