Galaxy C5 Pro surfaces on Indian import tracker

A little more than two months ago, we exclusively reported that Samsung was working on a souped-up model of the Galaxy C5 called the Galaxy C5 Pro, and now the handset — carrying the model number SM-C5010 — has been imported into India for testing and evaluation purposes. This news comes shortly after the long-rumored Galaxy C7 Pro entered the region for similar reasons.

Unfortunately, the documentation accompanying the prototype doesn’t shine any light on the internals it packs. If a recent report is anything to go by, however, it looks like the Galaxy C5 Pro will be powered by a Snapdragon 625 processor and will sport at least 3GB of RAM. Although, it’s worth noting that neither of those specifications have been confirmed as of yet.

You’ve probably noticed that the unit carries a price tag of INR 20,483 ($300) in the import listing, but it’s extremely unlikely that this will be the final price tag it’ll carry when it hits the shelves. In fact, it’s actually expected to be quite a bit more than this figure seeing as the Galaxy C5 currently retails for around INR 23,000 ($337) in India.

Galaxy S6 running Android 7.0 Nougat surfaces on GFXBench

It seems that Samsung is in the final stages of testing the Android 7.0 update for the Galaxy S6 as a model of the handset running a build of Nougat has surfaced on the GFXBench online database. Typically, when a device is benchmarked operating a new flavor of Android, it indicates that a rollout is right around the corner.

It’s worth noting, however, that it’s relatively easy to falsify benchmark results, but seeing as we reported last week that the South Korean company had already started developing the Nougat firmware for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, we’re going to go out on a limb and say that this revelation is somewhat plausible.

If the upgrade follows the same timeframe as the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, it shouldn’t be too much longer until it starts rolling out to International variants. For comparison, it started making the rounds to the firm’s flagship handsets a mere two weeks after it was spotted on a benchmark results website.

Samsung was India’s top 4G smartphone vendor in Q3 2016

Samsung maintains its strong position in India’s smartphone market. Latest data from Cyber Media Research shows that the company accounted for 32.1 percent of all 4G-compatible smartphones shipped in India in the third quarter of 2016. It’s followed in second place by China’s Lenovo with 14.6 percent and Lyf with 10.6 percent. Even though smartphones are rapidly becoming popular in the country, feature phones still remain in a dominant position as they account for 59 percent of the overall mobile phone market.

197.5 million mobile handsets were shipped in India by the end of September 2016, 78.4 million of those units were shipped in the third quarter alone. Cyber Media Research expects handset shipments in India to reach 265 million units by the end of this year. Smartphones are said to account for 116 million units. Data also shows that Samsung has maintained its lead in the high-end smartphone segment as its market share stands at 49.2 percent compared to Apple’s 43.3 percent in second place.

Samsung leads the mobile market in India overall with a 24.6 percent market share while Lenovo and Micromax follow in second and third place with 10.4 percent and 7.5 percent respectively.

November security patch now making its way to the Galaxy A3 (2016) in Europe

Samsung has today started distributing the November security patch for the factory unlocked model of the Galaxy A3 (2016) in Europe. Just like the build that started rolling out for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in the Netherlands last week, the upgrade brings a total of 14 specific bug fixes for the company’s mobile devices, in addition to dozens of patches for Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) in the Android OS.

Like usual, the update — firmware version XXU2BPK2 — is being pushed out in stages, so don’t be alarmed if you haven’t received a notification prompting you to install the upgrade just yet. If you own a Galaxy A3 (2016) and would like to see if the upgrade is ready for your handset, simply head into Settings » About Device » Software Update » Update Now.

Gear Manager application for iOS leaks online [APK]

A leaked IPA file for what’s believed to be the final beta build of the Gear Manager application for iOS has surfaced online. Owners of the Gear S2 and Gear S3 can download the file and install it on their iPhone running iOS 8.4 or later. It’s worth noting, however, that as this is beta version there are some bugs present, but it should give you a pretty good idea of what to expect when it finally launches on the App Store.

If you’d like to install the leaked build of Gear Manager for iOS on your handset, simply download the IPA file from here on your computer. Connect your iPhone. Double-click the beta file and sync it to your iPhone using iTunes. Select Gear S3 and tap install. Once you’re handset has finished synchronizing, navigate into Settings > General > Device Management, then trust the Samsung certificate.

Now all you have to do is factory reset your Gear S2 or Gear S3, switch on Bluetooth, pair it to your iPhone inside the Gear Manager application and you’ll be good to go. Some users have reportedly noticed that only a limited amount of watch faces and applications are available to install on the wearables from within the application at this precise moment in time. It’s likely that more will be added when it’s officially released before the year’s out.

Samsung expected to launch the Galaxy S7 in Glossy Black next month

It was reported recently that Samsung is going to reignite consumer interest in the Galaxy S7 series by launching new color options. The company has implemented this strategy by launching the Blue Coral Galaxy S7 edge. According to a new report out of Korea, the company is going to launch a new color option for the Galaxy S7 next month, one that’s going to rival the Jet Black iPhone 7. Samsung is apparently going to launch the Glossy Black Galaxy S7 in December.

The handset is already offered in Black Onyx but it has a matte finish. Glossy Black, as the name suggests, will be quite shiny but as we’ve already seen with the Jet Black iPhone 7, it may be prone to scratching very easily. The report fails to mention if the Glossy Black Galaxy S7 will be exclusive to Samsung’s home country of South Korea or if it will be released across the globe. Seeing as how the Blue Coral Galaxy S7 edge has been launched in multiple markets across the globe, similar treatment can be expected for the Glossy Black Galaxy S7 if and when it arrives.

Launching a dedicated rewards program for Samsung Pay is an absolutely brilliant move by Samsung

It was back at the Mobile World Congress in 2015 that Samsung announced it was going to launch a new mobile payments service. The company confirmed that it would launch Samsung Pay in South Korea and the United States first before expanding it to other markets across the globe. Samsung Pay is only supported by a handful of the company’s flagship smartphones and despite that it has seen significant growth over the past year that has seen it expand to countries like Russia, Canada, Singapore, Brazil, China and more. Supported devices include the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S7 series as well as the Galaxy Note 5. The Gear S3 smartwatch supports Samsung Pay too.

Samsung Pay was used to process more than $30 million accumulated transaction volume within the first month of its launch. This number surged to more than $850 million in Samsung’s home country within eight months of launch. This goes to show the monumental growth that Samsung’s mobile payment service has seen over the past several months. One big reason for the rapid adoption of this payment service is the ease of use since Samsung Pay supports both NFC and MST technologies.

Most mobile payment services rely on NFC or Near Field Communication technology only. They require merchants to acquire costly terminals before they can start accepting the payment service. Samsung Pay has support for Magnetic Secure Transmission as well which enables conventional card machines to accept this service. What this means is that users can pay with Samsung Pay almost anywhere they can pay using a credit or debit card. That’s what makes Samsung Pay very easy to use because even though the merchant might not be aware of it, their conventional card machine lets them accept mobile payments from Samsung users.

Samsung has also been pushing its mobile payment service through promotions and incentives. New users are often provided gift cards when they make their first purchase using Samsung Pay. That’s a great way to bring in new users who are apprehensive about trying the service. It has also been expanding relationships with banks and financial institutions to ensure that almost all card issuers are supported in a particular market.

The company is aware that the United States is a very lucrative market for its mobile payments service so it has been particularly working hard in the US. It now has support for more than 500 banks and financial institutions that represent over 80 percent of the country’s debit and credit card market. It also offers features such as coupons and support for merchant gift cards in the United States.

Samsung Pay (9)

Samsung has now taken a very wise step to set itself apart from the competition in the US. Earlier this week it announced the launch of the Samsung Rewards loyalty program for Samsung Pay. It’s actually the first proprietary rewards program by a mobile payments service in the United States so this is a significant development. The benefits of this program are twofold. Not only does Samsung give new users more reasons to at least try Samsung Pay but it also compels existing users to use Samsung Pay more often for their purchases. So Samsung gets a steady stream of new users for its payment service while ensuring that existing users continue to generate transaction volumes to gain incentives. Like I said, wise step.

The Samsung Rewards program provides members with points on every purchase made using the mobile payments service. It also has loyalty tiers with point multipliers which means that customers can earn up to quadruple points depending on how frequently they use Samsung Pay. Points accumulated can then be redeemed for Samsung products, vouchers for the company’s online store, gift cards to some of the best retailers in the country as well as Samsung Rewards Visa Prepaid Card value. Prize giveaways such as trips to Napa Valley and Las Vegas will also be offered to a few lucky members from time to time. The company has said that it’s going to expand Samsung Rewards to its other products and services as well so that customers have more opportunities to earn points.

A CMB Consumer Pulse survey asked consumers in the United States what features would influence them to adopt a mobile payments service. The question was posed to consumers who were looking to adopt a mobile payments service and planning to make a purchase using it within the next six months. 44 percent of the respondents, a clear majority, said that they would consider a service that offered a rewards program.

Consumers use credit cards for a variety of reasons one of which is to earn reward points. Nevertheless, the 2016 US Consumer Payment Study conducted by Total System Services reveals that debit cards are still the preferred spending instrument for the majority of the consumers in the United States. This is where Samsung Pay pulls a fast one on its rivals.

Those who have their credit cards configured with Samsung Pay not only earn reward points from their card issuer but they earn Samsung Rewards points on top. Debit card customers don’t earn points for their purchases but if they use the same card via Samsung Pay to make purchases anywhere they can pay by card, they earn Samsung Rewards points and thus get access to all of the incentives that their credit card counterparts get on Samsung Pay. This, I believe, is going to be one of the big drivers of growth for Samsung Pay in the United States.

With this move Samsung has left the competition far behind. A dedicated rewards program gives users more reasons to keep using Samsung Pay and it will surely entice holdouts to get on board as well. It’s a win-win for Samsung as the rewards program helps the company set its service apart from the competition. The program is also going to make users want to incorporate Samsung Pay into their spending routines as they will begin thinking about dollars and points. The more money they spend using Samsung Pay the more points they earn. It’s that simple. It’s a strategy that has worked for credit card issuers for decades and it’s going to work spectacularly well for Samsung Pay as well.

samsung-rewards-samsung-pay

The Samsung Rewards program has only been launched in the United States for now but there’s no doubt in my mind that eventually it’s going to be rolled out in other markets where Samsung Pay has already gone live. It would be a mistake not to do so. Samsung has got itself in a good position here to leap ahead of the competition and it’s surely going to make the most of it.

Exclusive: Galaxy S8 cases also include one with Alcantara leather

Harman audio is coming to Samsung’s Galaxy devices in 2018

Samsung lapped up Harman International a few days ago for $8 billion. Even though Samsung’s focus with this acquisition was connected automobiles, many were wondering if the South Korean smartphone giant would use Harman’s audio prowess in its smartphones. Now, it is being reported that Samsung is actually considering it.

According to a report from TheInvestor, the chief of Samsung’s automotive division, Park Jong-hwan, hinted that Samsung’s Galaxy S series of smartphones could use audio solutions developed by Harman in 2018. This comment was made when the company held a press conference regarding the acquisition in Seoul, South Korea on November 21. Harman CEO Dinesh Paliwal and Samsung Chief Strategy Officer Young Sohn also attended the event.

It will take time for the acquisition process to be completed, including the planned shareholders’ vote. After that, we could ramp up efforts for business synergies. If we are to adopt Harman’s high-end audio technology for the Galaxy S series phone, the first model could come in 2018,” said Park Jong-hwan, senior vice president and head of Samsung’s car parts division.

The company also confirmed that it has no plans to make its own cars and that it is only interested in the connected car solutions in the era of IoT (Internet of Things). Mr. Park also confirmed that Harman would remain an independent firm going forward. Samsung had been struggling to make partnerships with auto makers, but Harman’s acquisition should ease its struggle by quite a lot.
