Galaxy Watch 3, Galaxy Watch Active 2 get a new software update

Samsung has been regularly updating its smartphones, smartwatches, and tablets. After launching two new tablets last night and updating its high-end smartphones to the latest security patch, the company seems to have rolled out a new update to enhance the software on two of its most recent smartwatches.

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 and the Galaxy Watch 3 have started getting a new software update with a download size of around 49MB. The latest update seems to improve the icons for auto walking, auto running, and inactive alerts as per the official changelog. The new software, which is based on Tizen OS 5.5.0.2, also improves the device stability of the two smartwatches.

The latest software update for the Galaxy Watch Active 2 bears firmware version R820XXU1DUE3, while the Galaxy Watch 3 has firmware version R840XXU1BUE3. The updates are now available for Samsung’s Galaxy smartwatches in the US, and we expect the rollout to expand to more countries in the following days.

If you are a Galaxy Watch Active 2 or a Galaxy Watch 3 user, you can check for the update manually by opening the Galaxy Wearable app on your smartphone, navigating to Watch software update, and then tapping on Download and install.

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 and the Galaxy Watch 3 will be Samsung’s last smartwatches based on Tizen, and the company is switching to a newer version of Wear OS with the launch of the Galaxy Watch 4 later this year. The South Korean firm has promised to keep supporting the older watches for three years from their official launch dates.

Galaxy Z Flip 5G starts getting the June 2021 security update

Over the past few months, Samsung has been at the top of the hill when it comes to software updates. The company has been keeping its smartphones and tablets updated regularly with the latest security patches. After releasing the June 2021 security patch to the Galaxy S21 series last night, the company has done the same for the Galaxy Z Flip 5G as well.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5G has now started getting the June 2021 security patch in various parts of Europe. The new software, which has firmware version F707BXXS3DUE1, is now available in Austria, the Baltic region, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Italy, the Nordic countries, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and the UK. Samsung has, once again, released a new security patch even before the start of the month.

Samsung is yet to reveal which vulnerabilities it has fixed with the latest security update, but we expect the company to publish a detailed report over the next few days. As always, the new security patch is expected to include fixes from both Google and Samsung for various security and privacy vulnerabilities. The new update could be rolled out to Galaxy Z Flip 5G in other markets very soon.

If you are a Galaxy Z Flip 5G user in any of the countries mentioned above, you might have received a notification for the update already. If you haven’t, you can manually check for the update by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. Google Messages getting a basic feature that’s already there on Samsung Messages

Samsung’s default SMS app, simply called Messages as most first-party SMS apps tend to be called, is a pretty solid offering with plenty of features packed into it. However, despite giving you everything you could possibly need, Samsung Messages is no longer the default SMS app on Galaxy phones, or at least Galaxy phones that launch running version 3.1 of One UI out of the box.

Those phones come with Google’s Messages app set as the default SMS client out of the box, and if you have been using it on one of these phones or even other Galaxy devices running older One UI versions, you might be happy to hear that Google Messages will soon be getting one of the most convenient yet basic features that’s already available on Samsung’s Messages app.

That feature is the ability to pin message threads and conversations of choice to the top of the list, so you can open them up quickly instead of having to scroll down through other message threads, which can be a tedious affair depending on how many SMS you send and/or receive. Users will seemingly have the option to pin up to three conversations, though this number could change later – and it definitely should, as Samsung Messages places no such limits on you.

It’s not known when the conversation pinning feature will arrive on Google Messages, but whenever it does, Samsung’s Galaxy phones will be able to take advantage of it just like Android devices from other manufacturers. Of course, instead of waiting, you can simply switch to the Samsung Messages app and start pinning messages already – just tap and hold on the message threads you would like to pin to the top, tap the More button, and select Pin to top.

Unlocked Galaxy S10 units grabbing May security update in the US

The June security update is already rolling out to Samsung’s latest flagships, but there are plenty of Galaxy devices that are yet to receive the current month’s security update. Or, in this case, some variants: Unlocked units of the Galaxy S10 series are now getting the May 2021 security update, a couple of weeks after the update was released internationally and a day after a similar update was released for some carrier variants of the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ in the country.

The rollout of the update, which sports firmware version G97xU1UES5GUD1, started today. Unfortunately, it seems Samsung hasn’t included any of the improvements that were a part of the international release, namely improvements to file sharing over Quick Share and to camera performance. You only get the security patch for the month of May. Perhaps carried-locked variants will be luckier, but owners of unlocked units of the Galaxy S10e, S10, or S10+ will currently have to sit out and hope for those improvements to be included in the next update.

The May security update is available over the air and can be downloaded from the phone’s Settings » Software update menu, though it may be a while before it’s available country-wide owing to the phased nature of these rollouts. If you can’t get it that way or don’t want to wait, you can download the latest firmware from our archive and install it on the phone using a Windows PC.

Galaxy Tab S7 FE vs Tab S6: Can old hardware keep up with new software?

The Galaxy Tab S7 FE is finally official, and it’s marking the launch of the company’s first-ever Fan Edition tablet. Is it a flagship tablet killer? Maybe not in the literal sense. By design, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE isn’t powerful enough to replace the Galaxy Tab S7 or the Galaxy Tab S7+, but comparing it with the Galaxy Tab S6 has yielded some unexpected results.

Samsung’s new tablet and the 2019 flagship model share a lot of similarities, at least in appearance. They look very much alike and even more difficult to tell apart than the standard Galaxy Tab S7 and the FE model. However, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE is larger, slightly thicker, and considerably heavier.

So, as we’ve already established, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE looks modern enough to pass as a 2020-2021 flagship tablet, but can it beat the Galaxy Tab S6 in terms of hardware and software? After all, many would consider these characteristics to be among the top priorities of a Fan Edition device.

Galaxy Tab S7 FE vs Galaxy Tab S6: Software

Let’s start with the obvious and establish that the Galaxy Tab S6 was released with Android Pie, and was updated to Android 11 and One UI 3.1, but it won’t enjoy any other Android OS updates after Android 12.

On the other hand, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE is a lot newer and it benefits from newer firmware out of the box. It ships with Android 11 and One UI 3.1, and it will likely be updated to Android 14 in the future.

So, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE is the obvious winner in regards to firmware support, but what about the user experience?

Surprisingly, Samsung’s new tablet performs very well in this category, perhaps more so than the Galaxy Tab S6. It comes with 3-app Multi-Active Window as well as split-screen mode, and it supports Second Screen, which can turn the tablet into a secondary display for Windows 10 PCs.

These features are not yet available for the Galaxy Tab S6, and there’s no guarantee as to when or if they will be added with future firmware updates. On the other hand, the Galaxy Tab S6 offers wireless DeX support, whereas the Galaxy Tab S7 FE is seemingly limited to Samsung DeX via a hardware connection.

Another advantage the Galaxy Tab S7 FE has over the 2019 flagship model is that it comes with the same productivity suite as the Galaxy Tab S7 flagship. It includes Clip Studio Paint, Noteshelf, and a 30-day free trial to Canva Pro.

Galaxy Tab S7 FE vs Galaxy Tab S6: Hardware

Although the Galaxy Tab S6 was released nearly two years ago, not enough time has passed for the mid-range market to catch up, and unfortunately, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE doesn’t have a flagship-grade chipset. The older Snapdragon 855 chipset powering the Tab S6 has a faster CPU and a slower GPU, but overall, it’s a more competent solution than the Tab S7 FE’s Snapdragon 750G SoC.

Likewise, the Galaxy Tab S6 was released with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, or 8GB of RAM and 256GB of built-in memory. In contrast, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, or 6GB + 128GB.

Finally, the Galaxy Tab S6 has a better camera configuration that includes two rear-facing sensors (13MP + 5MP) and an 8MP selfie camera. The Galaxy Tab S7 FE is limited to a single 8MP main camera and a 5MP selfie unit.

Beyond raw performance, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE sports a larger 12.4-inch TFT display as opposed to a 10.5-inch Super AMOLED panel, but the resolution is identical across both tablets, clocking in at 2,560 by 1,600 pixels.

The Galaxy Tab S7 FE has two stereo speakers instead of four, but it also has a 3.5mm audio jack, whereas the Galaxy Tab S6 lacks one.

And finally, Samsung’s Fan Edition tablet boasts a larger 10,090mAh battery that supports much faster 45W charging, up from 15W. Granted, the battery is limited to 15W by the included charger, but at least Galaxy Tab S7 FE customers have the option of upgrading to a 25W or 45W charger if they need to.

Galaxy Tab S7 FE vs Galaxy Tab S6: Conclusion

Prospective tablet buyers who can make do with the chipset and memory options that are offered by the Galaxy Tab S7 FE will probably get more value out of the newer tablet than the Galaxy Tab S6. It has newer firmware and a better suite of productivity apps, and it supports faster charging. It also has a standard 3.5mm audio jack for customers who value this feature, while providing seamless connectivity for the Galaxy Buds.

The Galaxy Tab S6 has a few advantages of its own, including better speakers, improved performance, and an exquisite Samsung AMOLED display. But these characteristics won’t be enough to convince every customer that the Galaxy Tab S6 is the better choice for a tablet in 2021, especially since Android 12 will be its last major update.

In conclusion, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE is an interesting alternative to the 2019 flagship model, with better software support and more productivity apps, but it falls short in a few areas, particularly in regards to the internal hardware.

Galaxy Tab S7 FE vs Galaxy Tab S7/S7+: Is it a flagship tablet killer?

The Galaxy Tab S7 FE has a lot to prove, given that it’s Samsung’s first-ever Fan Edition tablet. But the fact that it was inspired by the 2020 Galaxy Tab S7 series seems to have worked in its favor. These tablets have more things in common than some might expect, but it’s also fair to say that the Galaxy Tab S7 FE is missing a few premium features. After all, it wouldn’t have been an FE-branded device if this weren’t the case, though the differences here are a little more stark than they were between the flagship Galaxy S20 models and the Galaxy S20 FE.

Samsung has described the Galaxy Tab S7 FE as a multimedia and productivity-oriented tablet, which it is. Much like the two non-FE models, the new tablet ships with an S Pen and a handful of productivity apps. It can also be paired with optional accessories, such as a Book Cover Keyboard.

Galaxy Tab S7 FE vs Galaxy Tab S7 / S7+: Design is top-notch

Samsung’s first-ever FE-branded tablet looks very much like the Galaxy Tab S7, or rather, the Galaxy Tab S7+, given its large 12.4-inch display. More on the technical side later, but as far as looks go, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE is premium and contemporary.

This is all because Samsung’s new tablet follows the same design language as its siblings from 2020. Every surface is flat, save for the rounded corners and the camera bump. The tablet has a metal finish and it will be available in four color options, Mystic Black, Mystic Green, Mystic Pink, and Mystic Silver.

The Galaxy Tab S7 FE measures 185.0 x 284.8 x 6.3mm and weighs 608 grams, which means it’s heavier than the Galaxy Tab S7 and the Galaxy Tab S7+. But thanks to the 12.4-inch display, its footprint is nearly identical to that of the Galaxy Tab S7+.

Galaxy Tab S7 FE vs Galaxy Tab S7 / S7+: The software is incredibly similar

Just like the exterior design, the software experience delivered by the Galaxy Tab S7 FE was inspired by the Galaxy Tab S7 series. Very much so. The tablet ships with the latest version of Samsung Notes and an S Pen included in the box, and every customer has free access to third-party apps such as Noteshelf, Clip Studio Paint, and a 30-day trial to Canva Pro. This is the same app bundle that was distributed with the Galaxy Tab S7 series.

The Galaxy Tab S7 FE supports Multi-Active Window, Second Screen, and Samsung DeX, but the company made no mention of wireless DeX. It does ship with Android 11 and One UI 3.1, which means that if Samsung supports it with three major Android OS updates, it will eventually be updated to Android 14. This gives it an advantage over the Galaxy Tab S7 and Galaxy Tab S7+, the latter of which are planned to drop support after Android 13.

Samsung TV Plus is available for the Galaxy Tab S7 FE out of the box, and the company is giving customers a four-month YouTube Premium subscription.

Galaxy Tab S7 FE vs Galaxy Tab S7 / S7+: Hardware makes the difference

As you all know by know, the main differences between the Galaxy Tab S7 and the Plus model lie in the display size and type, battery sizes, and fingerprint sensor types. Otherwise, they are virtually the same tablet, which makes this comparison a tad easier.

Samsung’s first FE tablet is on the large side, as it features a generous 12.4-inch display, just like the Galaxy Tab S7+. But unlike the flagship model, it has a TFT screen, and it’s limited to a 60Hz refresh rate. UI animations won’t look as smooth, and the S Pen won’t feel as responsive.

All three tablets look alike and offer a similar software experience, but Samsung had to make some sacrifices somewhere, and it chose the internal hardware.

The Galaxy Tab S7 FE has a Snapdragon 750G chipset, which isn’t nearly as powerful as the Snapdragon 865+. It also comes with less RAM and storage. Samsung will sell two models, with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, or 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. A microSD card slot is included.

Comparatively, the Tab S7 and S7+ come with 6GB / 8GB of RAM and 128GB / 256GB / 512GB of storage.

Samsung’s new tablet supports Dolby Atmos, but it has two AKG-tuned stereo speakers instead of four. One thing the Galaxy Tab S7 FE has that the non-FE models lack is a 3.5mm audio jack.

The tablet is equipped with a single 8MP main camera and a lower-resolution 5MP selfie sensor. On the other hand, it boasts a 10,090mAh battery with 45W super-fast charging capabilities, just like the Galaxy Tab S7+. And, same as before, Samsung is pairing the FE tablet with a 15W charger.

Galaxy Tab S7 FE vs Galaxy Tab S7 / S7+: Conclusion

Samsung’s first FE tablet sounds promising and could be a great addition to the company’s portfolio, but as far as a Fan Edition device goes, the price might pose a problem. The tablet will be released in June in select markets, and in the UK, the 64GB / 128GB models will go on sale for £589 and £629.

In contrast, the base Galaxy Tab S7 and Galaxy Tab S7+ models with Wi-Fi-only connectivity cost £619 and £799, respectively. So, while the Galaxy Tab S7 FE seems to have a chance to challenge the larger Galaxy Tab S7+ from a cost perspective, it will be a much more difficult sell when compared to the base Galaxy Tab S7 model because they cost almost the same. It’s only a £30 difference between the base Galaxy Tab S7 FE and Galaxy Tab S7 models.

On the face of it, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE looks like an interesting mix of premium features and mid-range hardware, which isn’t exactly the Fan Edition way that was set forth by the Galaxy S20 FE. The lack of a high refresh rate or AMOLED display and / or a flagship-grade chipset is disappointing, but the tablet’s other qualities could make up for it.

Is it a flagship tablet killer? Not necessarily, but it might complement the existing Galaxy Tab S7 lineup well.

Galaxy Tab S7 FE 5G and Galaxy Tab A7 Lite price and release details

Samsung has expanded its tablet lineup with two new models today, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE 5G and the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite. The former brings some of the best features of the Galaxy Tab S7 into a more affordable package. The latter is for those who require a compact tablet at an attractive price.

Both tablets appear to be compelling options in their price range. Now interested customers will be wondering how much do these tablets cost. Fortunately, Samsung has already confirmed the official Galaxy Tab S7 FE 5G and Galaxy Tab A7 Lite price.

Official prices for Samsung’s latest tablets

The Galaxy Tab S7 FE features a 12.4-inch TFT display that supports the S Pen. It does come with the S Pen in the box so users can take advantage of the stylus right off the bat. It also features a 10,090mAh battery with support for 45W fast charging. The tablet is available in 64GB and 128GB storage variants with 4GB and 6GB RAM respectively.

The Galaxy Tab A7 Lite has an 8.7-inch TFT display housed in a durable metal cover. This compact tablet has a 5,100mAh battery that supports 15W fast charging. It’s available in 32GB and 64GB storage options with 3GB and 4GB RAM respectively.

Samsung has confirmed today that the Galaxy Tab S7 FE 5G will be available for pre-order from selected retailers starting June 2. Major UK retailers and Samsung’s own retail channels will have the tablet readily available from June 18. That’s also when the Galaxy A7 Lite will be available.

The Galaxy Tab S7 FE 5G starts at £589 for the 64GB and £629 for the 128GB model. Price for the LTE variant is yet to be confirmed. Earlier reports have suggested that it may cost the equivalent of 649 euro. The Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is priced at £149 and £179 for the Wi-Fi and LTE variants.

New Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is a tablet for Samsung TV Plus and light gaming

The Galaxy Tab S7 FE is today’s highlight, but it wasn’t alone when it was announced by Samsung moments ago. The company also took the veil off a cheaper, distant cousin of the Fan Edition device, called the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite. It doesn’t have an S Pen, and it’s not geared towards productivity but for media consumption at a friendly price.

Samsung will be selling the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite in two variants, LTE and Wi-Fi-only. They feature Bluetooth 5 connectivity, a 3.5mm audio jack, a USB-C 2.0 port, and a 5,100mAh battery with 15W fast charging support. The tablet will ship with a standard charger, and customers can choose to buy the 15W charger separately.

A budget tablet with immediate access to Samsung TV Plus

The Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is equipped with an 8.7-inch TFT display that has a resolution of 1,340 by 800 pixels. It’s powered by the Helio P22T octa-core chipset, and it will be available with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, or 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. And yes, the tablet has a microSD card slot.

The metal back panel accommodates an 8MP camera with autofocus. A 2MP selfie sensor is embedded in the tablet’s upper bezel.

Samsung hopes to sell the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite as a compact, on-the-go solution for light gaming and media consumption. It has two stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support, and buyers will have access to Samsung TV Plus out of the box. Two months of YouTube Premium are included for free with every Galaxy Tab A7 Lite purchase.

As for its compact, on-the-go design, the tablet measures 212.5 x 124.7 x 8.0mm and has thin side bezels. The Wi-Fi model weighs 366 grams, and the LTE variant is marginally heavier at 371 grams.

Samsung’s first Fan Edition tablet is here with plenty of premium qualities!

Samsung’s first-ever FE-branded tablet didn’t have the smoothest launch, since a store page was listed prematurely in Germany days before it was supposed to. Said page was removed, leaving fans wondering when the tablet will go live, but now, the wait is over. Samsung officially launched the Galaxy Tab S7 FE moments ago, and this time, there’s no turning back.

The FE (Fan Edition) brand has so far been true to its name. The Galaxy S20 FE is a success story with a lot of fans. And because Samsung has decided that its new tablet should be named ‘Galaxy Tab S7 FE’ — after weeks of debate over various other tentative monikers, including Galaxy Tab S7 Plus Lite — there’s a lot of pressure on this tablet to deliver and not disappoint. It looks promising enough at first glance, and we’ll go in-depth in our future review, but for now, let’s see what Samsung had to say.

An on-the-go productivity tablet that enables creativity

The Galaxy Tab S7 FE ships with an S Pen, it supports Samsung DeX, and can be paired with an optional Book Cover Keyboard accessory. On the software side, the tablet ships with Android 11 and One UI 3.1.

It offers Multi-Active Window, and much like the Galaxy Tab S7 / Galaxy Tab S7+, it supports Second Screen. This allows the tablet to be used as a secondary screen to a Windows 10 PC through a WiDi (Wireless Display) connection.

The S Pen can be put to good use with the latest version of Samsung Notes and a selection of third-party apps that are included with every Galaxy Tab S7 FE purchase. These are Noteshelf, Clip Studio Paint, and a 30-days free trial to Canva Pro. In some markets, Samsung mentions that Canva Pro and Clip Studio Paint need to be downloaded from the Galaxy Store.

As for media and entertainment, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE is compatible with Samsung TV Plus out of the box, and it ships with four months of YouTube Premium for free.

A closer look at the Galaxy Tab S7 FE hardware

All of the content mentioned above, and more, will be available to the senses through a 12.4-inch, 60Hz TFT LCD with a resolution of 2560 by 1600, and dual stereo speakers with sound by AKG and support for Dolby Atmos.

Beyond the obvious, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE features a Snapdragon 750G chipset. It comprises two Kryo 570 CPU cores operating at 2.2GHz and six Kryo 570 cores that have been tuned for efficiency, clocked at 1.8GHz.

The CPU is accompanied by an Adreno 619 graphics chip and 4GB or 6GB of RAM. Depending on the choice of RAM, customers get 64GB or 128GB of built-in storage. Assuming that’s not enough, there’s a microSD card slot that can read cards with a capacity of up to 1TB.

There are other hardware bits and pieces worth mentioning, such as the USB-C 3.2 Gen1 port, the 8MP main camera with AF (autofocus), the 5MP selfie sensor, as well as the Wi-Fi-only and 5G connectivity options.

In addition, the tablet is powered by a 10,090mAh battery with support for 45W super-fast charging, although both 25W and 45W chargers need to be bought separately.

The Galaxy Tab S7 FE looks very much like the non-FE models

The Galaxy Tab S7 FE follows the same design language as the non-FE variants released last year. The screen, back panel, and edges are completely flat, barring the protruding rear camera.

The tablet looks modern and can be easily mistaken for a non-FE model. Some differences give it away, such as the shorter magnetic strip for the S Pen, located on the back panel. There are also two fewer speaker grilles because there are two fewer speakers.

But Samsung’s first FE-branded tablet and the Galaxy Tab S7 also have a lot in common in terms of software and accessories. So, it looks like a flagship, it has a handful of flagship features, and it can recharge like a bat out of hell (if a 45W charger is used), but it lacks certain premium qualities such as a high refresh rate or AMOLED display. Some shortcuts had to be taken, because it’s the FE way, but we’ll talk more in our upcoming review about whether or not these were the right shortcuts to take.

Samsung will start shipping the Galaxy Tab S7 FE in June, here are the pricing and availability details. It will be available in four Mystic color options: black, green, silver, and pink.

Samsung will provide a big upgrade for the Nintendo Switch Pro

It’s been four years since the Nintendo Switch has been on the market. It has proven to be one of Nintendo’s best-selling consoles. So it goes without saying that a lot of people are looking forward to its successor.

Reports suggest that the successor will be called the Nintendo Switch Pro. It’s expected to be unveiled next month. The unveil is likely going to confirm that Samsung has provided a big upgrade for Nintendo’s next console.

Next Nintendo Switch to feature a Samsung OLED display

There have been several reports over the past few months about Samsung supplying OLED panels for the next Nintendo Switch. An OLED panel would significantly improve the gaming experience in handheld mode.

The console currently features a 6.2-inch 1280×720 pixel resolution LCD display. With Samsung making the best OLED panels in the business, the Switch Pro will certainly provide an elevated handheld gaming experience.

It’s not only the panel technology that’s changing. The new Nintendo Switch is apparently going from a 6.2-inch display to a 7-inch Samsung OLED. However, it’s believed that the current 720p resolution will be maintained to not reduce the battery life.

Nintendo will obviously be making some other improvements under the hood. There’s also talk of an improved graphics chip that may enable 4K gaming when the console is docked and paired with a TV.

Bloomberg is reporting that the tentatively named Nintendo Switch Pro will be unveiled before the E3 gaming convention that takes place in mid-June.

Latest Galaxy S21 update brings the June 2021 security patch

Samsung is now very quick to release new security patches. We often see the company releasing next month’s patch even before we roll into the new month. That’s exactly what has happened today. The company is now rolling out the June 2021 security patch for the Galaxy S21 lineup.

The rollout has only just started. This means that it’s only available over-the-air in select countries for now. However, it won’t be long before the latest Galaxy S21 update is out for all markets.

Galaxy S21 lineup gets the June 2021 security patch

Samsung is rolling out firmware version G991NKSU3AUE8, G996NKSU3AUE8, and G998NKSU3AUE8 for the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+ and the Galaxy S21 Ultra respectively. The new firmware is currently out in South Korea only.

The latest Galaxy S21 firmware update is currently rolling out over-the-air. The contents of next month’s security patch haven’t been detailed right now. We should expect that to happen in the first few months of June. That’s also when Google will release information about what it has patched in this release.

One should obviously not expect much in the way of new futures from this firmware update. Samsung’s 2021 flagships are running the latest version of its One UI custom skin. They already have all of the latest software features that Samsung has to offer.

Samsung Display wants to keep making LCD panels for now

Due to declining demand for LCD panels and rising competition from Chinese display makers, Samsung Display was reportedly thinking about getting out of the LCD business altogether.

Earlier reports had revealed that Samsung Display wanted to stop all LCD production by the end of 2020. However, it had postponed its plans at the request of Samsung Electronics for some time. It appears now that the company will continue making LCD panels for the foreseeable future.

Rising demand keeps Samsung Display interested

Samsung Electronics had made the request as it saw an increase in demand for monitors and TVs. The demand was primarily driven by people having to spend more time indoors due to the pandemic. Had Samsung Display stopped making the panels, Samsung Electronics would have had to source them from LG.

Samsung Display will thus continue to supply LCD panels now. The company’s CEO Joo-sun Choi has sent an email to executives confirming that Samsung Display is considering extending the production of large LCD panels by the end of next year.

Last year’s increase in demand also caused an increase in panel prices. Having to source them from outside the conglomerate would have likely cost Samsung Electronics more. By retaining its integrated supply chain, it can cater to that demand more effectively.

“We are considering a plan to continue LCD production until next year, considering the company’s profits first and reflecting the market conditions,” said a Samsung Display official.

Galaxy A32 5G now more secure as it gets May 2021 security update

The 5G variant of the Galaxy A32 is making the jump to the May 2021 security patch with the release of the latest update. This particular update is rolling out to the Galaxy A32 5G in Vietnam and Thailand and, apart from the latest security fixes, should include other changes and improvements as well, but the lack of a changelog at this time means we don’t know what they are.

What we do know is what the May 2021 security patch has to offer. It brings fixes for three critical vulnerabilities in the core Android OS and fixes for 23 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures items, which are exploits that affect only Galaxy devices. The details for these vulnerabilities are a little too technical, but the fixes included in the May patch should make a number of Samsung apps, such as S Secure and Secure Folder, more, well, secure.

As for the Galaxy A32’s LTE variant, it should also be getting the May update soon as well, despite the number of hardware differences between the LTE and 5G Galaxy A32 models. The A32 5G’s update is currently available in Vietnam and Thailand, and owners of the device in those countries should be able to update their phones by going into its settings, navigating to Software update, and selecting Download and install. The latest firmware is also available in our archive for manual installation using a Windows PC.

Galaxy A30s Android 11 certification means the update is close

Samsung has already updated the Galaxy A30 to Android 11 and One UI 3.1, but what about the Galaxy A30s, its slightly costlier cousin? Well, the wait for Galaxy A30s owners just got a lot shorter, as the device has been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance running Android 11 this week.

The Galaxy A30’s Android 11-based Wi-Fi certification and the actual release of the update happened two weeks apart, so the Galaxy A30’s could get its next major firmware update by mid-June. That’s just an assumption, though. Samsung’s official roadmap pegs the A30s’ Android 11 update for a release in August in many markets, and while the company has a good track record of handily beating those deadlines, it’s still best not to get too excited just yet if you own a Galaxy A30s.

You should also be prepared for the fact that Android 11 will be the final big OS upgrade for your phone. No non-flagship Galaxy phone from 2019 is eligible for Samsung’s promise of three generations of Android and One UI updates. In fact, the list of A series devices that are eligible is pretty short at the moment, so the Galaxy A30s (and Galaxy A30) isn’t the only phone that is missing out.

Galaxy A22 5G could debut for less than 200 euros

The next device that’s expected to be a part of Samsung’s endgame of making 5G phones as economical as possible is the Galaxy A22 5G, which we have learned a lot about these past few weeks. Well, now we are learning just how economical the A22 5G might be. A Finnish retailer has listed the phone for €185 without VAT, which means the final price could be around €199 once the appropriate taxes have been added.

Nothing is official at this time, but if that pricing turns out to be the real deal, the Galaxy A22 5G could see some traction in the market. Of course, whether or not 5G support is something many customers are looking for is up for debate, but for those who are, a sub-€200 price tag could be enticing. Well, at least if 5G is all they care about, as Samsung’s affordable 5G phones make too many compromises for that affordability tag.

The Galaxy A22 5G is expected to be quite run-of-the-mill, with the main attractions being the MediaTek Dimensity 700 processor and a 5,000 mAh battery. Other specs should include a 6.4-inch Full HD+ LCD display, 4 gigs of RAM, a 48MP main camera flanked by 8MP ultra-wide and 2MP macro and depth sensors, possibly a 13MP front camera, 15W fast charging, and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. A 4G variant is in the works as well, but with somewhat different specs.

The Galaxy A22 5G could be available in at least four colors: black, light green, purple, and white. A violet version might exist as well. The retailer mentions an approximate release date of June 10th, so an official launch should be right around the corner.
