Galaxy S8 camera can capture 1000fps videos, iris sensor gets an upgrade too

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus later this month, and all the recent reports point towards a 12-megapixel camera. People have been wondering as to why the camera hasn’t been upgraded from the Galaxy S7 (which introduced dual-pixel autofocus). However, a new report states that Samsung is bringing improvements to video recording as well as the front-facing camera.

According to a report by Naver, the Galaxy S8′s camera can record 1000fps videos, and the company has achieved this by adding DRAM (used as buffer memory) into the camera sensor itself. Sony’s recently unveiled the Xperia XZ Premium with a 19-megapixel camera sensor (IMX400) that uses a similar technique to capture 960fps slow-motion videos at 720fps, but our sources tell us that the Galaxy S8 won’t use the same sensor.

Additional information regarding the Galaxy S8′s imaging capabilities was also revealed. The smartphone will reportedly feature an 8-megapixel front-facing camera with autofocus. According to our sources, the Galaxy S8 will also feature a 3.7-megapixel RGB camera sensor for iris scanning, which might explain Samsung’s increasing confidence in facial and iris recognition for user authentication.

All black Galaxy S8 struts its stuff in leaked photos

It was reported last week that the Galaxy S8 would be offered in Black, Silver, and Violet colors. We’ve already seen more than a few leaked photos of the Galaxy S8 which give us an idea of how the handset will look in these different colors. A fresh batch of leaked photos has surfaced online in which the all black Galaxy S8 struts its stuff very nicely.

The leaked pictures don’t make any revelations about the design because we’ve already seen it so many times. The bezels are minimal, there’s no physical home button and the fingerprint sensor has been relocated to the back. However, they do a pretty good job of showing off the deep black color that Samsung is now expected to offer this device in.

Expect Samsung to confirm details about available colors at the March 29 event where it will formally announce the new flagship. There are conflicting reports about the release date but according to the latest report, Samsung is going to release the Galaxy S8 across the globe on April 28.

Original Galaxy A7 gets February security patch

Samsung has now started rolling out the February security patch for the original Galaxy A7, the handset that it launched back in 2015. The Galaxy A series has done well for Samsung and the company has really improved it over the past few years. The latest Galaxy A (2017) series really feels as if it has the same premium DNA as the company’s flagship devices but at a lower price point.

The company has now started rolling out firmware version A700FXXU2BQB1 for the original Galaxy A7 in Netherlands. It may only be a matter of time before the update goes live in other markets as well. The top-of-the-line handset in Samsung’s Galaxy A series only made its way to Europe properly in 2015 as the company later decided that it wasn’t going to make it available widely across Europe in the 2016 and 2017 iterations.

The over-the-air update is rolling out now for those who own the original Galaxy A7 handset. It’s also available for download via our firmware section. It may take a while before it goes live across all regions. Since it’s a minor update, users shouldn’t expect much in the way of new features.

Galaxy S8 with 6GB RAM will reportedly be launched in China only

All of the reports that we’ve seen about the Galaxy S8 specs so far suggest that the handset is going to feature 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. However, multiple reports have also suggested that there will be a variant of the new flagship with 6GB RAM. The research director of IHS for China Kevin Wong suggests that this particular variant will only be launched in China.

We’ve heard this before as well. Samsung wants to take part in the numbers race because many local manufacturers in China are already selling phones with 6GB of RAM. It has already launched the Galaxy C9 Pro with 6GB RAM in the country so it won’t be surprising if the company launches a 6GB RAM and 128GB storage variant of the Galaxy S8 in the People’s Republic.

More RAM doesn’t necessarily translate into better performance so Galaxy S8 owners across the globe shouldn’t feel that they’ve been handed a less capable smartphone. Samsung’s primary reason to do this might just be to ensure that its new smartphone doesn’t get overshadowed by the competition.

Samsung Galaxy X unlikely to debut this year

Reports about Samsung’s first foldable smartphone, the Galaxy X, have been gathering steam over the past few weeks. It was reported that the South Korean smartphone giant would release the revolutionary device in the third quarter of this year. However, a new report from The Investor states that the launch is unlikely to happen this year.

Experts and insiders from Samsung Electronics as well as Samsung Display are skeptical over the release of the Galaxy X. Some of them reportedly said that the companies are still perfecting the foldable display technology, and hurrying the launch might take a toll on Samsung, which was recently hit hard by the Galaxy Note 7 battery fiasco.

An anonymos industry insider was quoted saying, “Samsung Display has conducted a range of projects for rollable and foldable displays at its lab since 2005. After almost a decade since the company first succeeded in folding a functioning display in 2008, the foldable display has not been commercialized yet, which means there are still many technical trade-offs to make and difficulties to overcome.

DJ Koh, Samsung Mobile chief explained last year that the company would not release a foldable smartphone until it is sure of its “meaningful innovations and true convenience to users.” Even though Samsung fans and geeks have high expectations from the Galaxy X, there are still some technical difficulties such as durability and flexibility that should be solved.

Some more problems with the foldable smartphone is the inclusion of features like 3D Touch, fingerprint sensor embedded inside the display, and all these technologies working together seamlessly. “Demonstrating these display technologies for a one-time event is easy, but commercializing them is a totally different story,” the source said to The Investor.

An official from the parts supplier brand for Apple and Samsung said that the launch of the latter’s foldable smartphone has been delayed, and that it is pouring a lot of resources on the foldable smartphone, but even engineers are not sure about the practicality of the device.

Second-generation Gear 360 shows up at the FCC

The much-rumored ‘Gear 360 Pro‘ has today been spotted on the FCC’s online database, though it would appear that Samsung has dropped the ‘Pro’ branding previously associated with the device (SM-R210), and will retain the ‘Gear 360′ moniker  or brand it as the ‘Next Gear 360‘  when it launches. sm-r210-gear-360-fcc-label

Unfortunately, the documentation filed with the FCC is heavily redacted, so we don’t know exactly what to expect with regards to specific camera details. However, an included 3D render reveals that it’s set to be a smaller (45mm in width), handheld device, scrapping the tripod design that debuted on last year’s model.

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus to go up for pre-order in South Korea on Friday, April 7

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus were previously rumored to go up for pre-order worldwide on Monday, April 10, and officially on sale in-store on Friday, April 21, but a new report fresh out of South Korea claims that Samsung’s brought the date forward to Friday, April 7 in the region.

It’s believed that Samsung three Korean carriers will accept pre-orders for the devices through Monday, April 17. After a (likely sleepless) night of arranging orders, there will be a special “Galaxy S8 pre-launch event” the following day — Tuesday, April 18 — at some operators brick-and-mortar stores.

Unfortunately, it’s unclear whether the hands will still be available to pre-order in other countries on Monday, April 10. The report does state, however, that the official sale date of the handset is set as Friday, April 21 — so it certainly seems feasible that customers will be able to reserve one a week in advance.

December security patch makes its way to the Galaxy NotePRO 12.2 in Europe

A new update is arriving on the Galaxy NotePRO 12.2 in Europe. Unfortunately, the upgrade doesn’t bring Nougat to the device (I mean, why would it?). It does, however, transport all of the bug fixes and stability improvements present in the December security patch.

If you own a Galaxy NotePRO 12.2 and would like to see if the OTA (XXS0BPL1) is ready for your device open up the Settings menu, then select the relevant option from the Software Update section under the About Device subheading.
