At $2,000, the Galaxy Fold deserves more than two major OS updates

If comments from Samsung’s mobile boss DJ Koh are anything to go by, the company will soon confirm when the Galaxy Fold is going to be launched. It had to delay the initial launch scheduled for April 26 in the United States due to some issues with review units. We have already discussed those issues in detail.

Samsung later recovered all review units that it had sent out and confirmed that it would improve the protection around the display to prevent foreign substances from lodging beneath it. So it’s not going to be long before customers can purchase Samsung’s $2,000 foldable smartphone. And while they get a very unique device for the money, we believe that Samsung should go the extra mile for Galaxy Fold customers in the software department.

Samsung should commit to three major Android OS updates

The $2,000 price tag for the Galaxy Fold may seem too high when looked at in isolation. However, add some context and it doesn’t look too crazy anymore. As we have already discussed before, the Galaxy Fold is actually quite the opposite of being overpriced. Samsung is also aware that it needs to provide additional services to customers so that they get the most bang for their buck. That’s why there has been talk of a concierge-like after-sales service for the Galaxy Fold.

It shouldn’t stop there, though. Most Android smartphones only receive two major OS updates. If your phone shipped with Android Oreo, Android Q would be the last major platform update that it receives. Since the Galaxy Fold will ship with Android Pie, the OS update that arrives after Android Q would be its last. And, as a result, there would be no difference in the update policy for a $200 budget Samsung phone and the $2,000 Galaxy Fold.

That’s not how it should be. Samsung should at least commit to three major OS updates for the Galaxy Fold. With its Snapdragon 855 processor, 12GB RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.0 internal storage, one can hardly make technical limitations an excuse. There has to be an added advantage from a software standpoint for customers who purchase Samsung’s first foldable smartphone. A lot of its fans would just wait until the next generation (or the one after that) for the technology to mature a bit, so it’s imperative that early adopters are given the utmost value for their money.

Samsung hasn’t announced anything regarding extended major Android OS support for the Galaxy Fold as yet. It has only talked about providing additional after-sales service, but it’s unclear precisely what this concierge-like service will be useful for. Samsung will most likely provide more information about this once the Galaxy Fold actually starts shipping.

We hope that Samsung will pleasantly surprise all of us by committing to three major Android OS updates for the Galaxy Fold. It just feels like the right thing to do, wouldn’t you agree?

Samsung brings the Galaxy S10 Enterprise Edition to Spain

Out of the box, Samsung smartphones already pack a robust set of features for enterprise customers, but the company often goes one step ahead and launches Enterprise Editions of its flagship and select midrange devices to target the lucrative enterprise segment more effectively. It did the same with the Galaxy S10e and S10 as well and has now launched them in Spain.

Like in the past, these Enterprise Edition devices are not different from their regular counterparts in terms of hardware or software. The key differentiating factors are after-sales support, timely security updates, and enterprise-deployment and management tools like Knox Configure, Enterprise Firmware Over-The-Air service (E-FOTA on MDM), etc.

Pricing should be similar to the regular variants

Unlike the previous generation models, Samsung has been rather quiet about its Galaxy S10 Enterprise Edition devices so far and is expanding their availability without much fanfare. The press release from Samsung doesn’t include any pricing information, but if the previous models are any indication, the pricing should be similar to the regular variants.

“At Samsung we are aware of everything that companies need in a new era marked by mobility, where secure devices are increasingly demanded, but at the same time accessible from internal IT departments. The Enterprise Edition devices combine the latest advances in technology and the best performance for companies, which also want to enjoy ten years of innovation reflected in the new Galaxy S10, ” said (translated) David Alonso, Director, Samsung Spain.

T-Mobile rolls out April security patch for the Galaxy S10

North American carriers have been dragging their feet with updates for the Galaxy S10. Sprint was the only major carrier that released the April update in April, although it did have more reason to be quick: It had to fix some serious LTE reception issues that Galaxy S10 owners had been facing on its network (although the final solution involved replacing all affected devices). Verizon released the April update earlier this week, and T-Mobile has now followed up with an update for their subscribers.

The update that’s rolling out to T-Mobile’s Galaxy S10 only includes the April 2019 security patch; there’s no Night mode for the camera app, which is likely to disappoint those who have been looking forward to it. The update is a 183 MB download and bumps the software version to G970USQU1ASD7, G973USQU1ASD7, and G975USQU1ASD7 for the S10e, S10, and S10+ respectively. The update is likely to be rolling out in stages but should be available for all T-Mobile Galaxy S10 users by the end of the week.

To check if it’s available for your device, open the Settings app, select Software update, then select Download and install. We have the firmware for the new update in our database for those who would like to upgrade right away.

Galaxy S10 helps Samsung’s market share grow in North America

The Galaxy S10 series is doing wonders for Samsung globally. The company has regained some of the lost market share in the lucrative Chinese and Indian markets on the back of the Galaxy S10 phones. Now some fresh figures from consulting firm Canalys show Samsung’s market share to have surged in North America as well. What’s an even prettier sight is that the surge has come at a time when overall smartphone shipments saw a drop of 18%.

Samsung’s market share grew 6.1% annually

The latest data released by Canalys puts the North American smartphone market at a five-year low for the first quarter of this year. Smartphone shipments dropped to 36.4 million from 44.4 million during the same period last year. Canalys says it’s the steepest drop it has ever recorded.

However, Samsung still managed a marginal growth in the market, thanks to strong Galaxy S10 sales. The Galaxy S10+ (review) and the Galaxy S10e (review) were among the top three smartphones sold in North America in Q1 2019. Both devices sold over 2 million units each, snapping up 6% of the market share individually.

Overall, Samsung shipped 10.7 million smartphones in North America in Q1 2019, up from 10.3 million units a year ago. The numbers accounted for a sales growth of 3%. Samsung’s market share saw a year-on-year growth of 6.1%, up from 23.2% in Q1 2018 to 29.3% in Q1 2019.
