Galaxy S8 with dual cameras pictured yet again

There were a lot of rumors in the days leading up to the Galaxy S8′s launch about the new flagship featuring a dual camera system at the back. It was predicted to be the first smartphone from Samsung to feature dual cameras. Samsung officially unveiled the Galaxy S8 on March 29 and subsequently proved the rumors wrong.

However, it’s no secret that Samsung tested prototypes of the Galaxy S8 with a dual camera system. We’ve seen images of the prototype in the past as well. Earlier today, a couple of images were leaked online from China via Weibo showing us another unit that features a dual camera. It doesn’t feature a fingerprint sensor at the back like the Galaxy S8 actually does.

This goes to show that those rumors were not without merit. We did report earlier this year that Samsung was testing multiple prototypes of the Galaxy S8 and all of the rumors were based on them. Thus it was difficult to be sure about anything. For the longest time, the rumor mill was convinced that the dual camera setup would make the cut.

We know now that it didn’t. Perhaps Samsung felt that the technology wasn’t ready yet or that it wasn’t a good fit for the Galaxy S8. We’re hearing that the dual camera setup will make its way to the Galaxy Note 8, though, and that would certainly be a welcome addition on the new phablet.

Samsung and Sprint test LTE-boosting technology in South Korea

Sprint and Samsung recently tested the Massive MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) technology on the 2.5GHz spectrum in South Korea. This was a real-world application of a technology that will enable Sprint to “dramatically boost” LTE Plus wireless capacity and cover. The technology will also enable Sprint to offer Gigabit LTE to its customers in the United States.

The field testing in Suwon, South Korea involved Massive MIMO Samsung radios that were equipped with vertical and horizontal bean-forming technology. Sprint was able to reach peak speeds of 330 Mbps per channel using a 20MHz channel of 2.5GHz spectrum.

The setup increased capacity per channel by four times while increasing cell edge performance three times. The overall coverage area also improved compared to existing radios.

Sprint has already deployed 8T8R (8 transmit, 8 receive) radios across its network in the United States. It conducted this test with Samsung to compare the performance of Massive MIMO radios with 8T8R radios. Both companies wrote the test cases and requirements that involved multi-user and non-stationary testing.

The entire Massive MIMO network infrastructure was provided by Samsung as well as the test network design, operation, data collection and processing. Sprint and Samsung are going to use the results from this test to prepare for commercial deployment of Massive MIMO in the United States and other countries.

Samsung Q2 2017 operating profit may beat every other company on the planet

There have already been many predictions from market analysts that the second quarter of this year is going to be a good one for Samsung. The company is expected to break its previous record of the highest operating profit ever in a single quarter. The latest predictions go so far as to suggest that Samsung’s Q2 2017 operating profit will beat every other company on the planet in this particular period of time.

Market analysts predict that Samsung’s Q2 2017 operating profit will be more than Apple’s. They are also predicting that the company will rake in more profit in this quarter than the likes of Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Google.

Stock firms in South Korea are estimating Samsung’s operating profit for Q2 2017 to be around 13.1187 trillion won or $11.6 billion. There are not discounting the possibility of the final figure being even higher than this as the estimation of Samsung’s performance in this quarter continues to rise.

Some firms predict that the final number could be higher than $12.3 billion and that will be similar to the operating profits of Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Google combined. The total operating profit of these four companies in Q1 2017 was close to $11.15 billion. Apple is predicted to post an operating profit of $10.55 billion during the same quarter.

Samsung’s semiconductor business is said to be the biggest contributor to these gains alongside rising demand in the display market. Samsung’s near monopoly in the small and medium-sized OLED panel market serves its interests well.

Since the Galaxy S8 came out towards the end of the quarter, Samsung’s smartphone business may not be the top contributing to its record-breaking quarterly operating profit.

The company will officially announce its earnings guidance for Q2 2017 in the coming weeks.

Samsung is hosting an accessory designing competition for its QLED TVs

Samsung launched its high-end, QLED TVs earlier this year, and they come with improved picture quality, new software features, and better designs. Now, the company has announced that it is hosting an accessory designing competition for its QLED TVs in collaboration with Deezen, one of the leading design and architectural magazine. It’s a €30,000 competition, and the grand prize for the best designer is €8,000.

The company’s first ever global TV accessory design competition will run from June 16 to August 1. Designers who are interested in participating in this contest need to submit their QLED TV stand designs along with corresponding strategic business plans. Top five finalists will be invited to IFA 2017 in Berlin, Germany where their designs will be showcased at Samsung’s booth, and a grand prize winner will be announced.

We want to give everyone, including our consumers, the opportunity to show off their creativity and help us design the next big TV accessory. Samsung’s ultimate vision is to create an open platform for designers all over the world where they can showcase their ingenuity through unique stand designs that fit into a variety of home environments,” said HS.Kim, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung is positioning its new QLED TVs and The Frame as lifestyle TVs that not only have great picture quality but they’re great to look at as well. Moreover, consumers can choose from two TV stands – Gravity and Studio – to suit whatever goes well with the rest of their room’s interior design. These new TVs also come with an ‘Invisible Connection’, a clear-colored optical cable that makes the TV setup look super clean, void of any clutter.

Samsung Pay gets support for HSBC and M&S Bank cards in the United Kingdom

Samsung took its sweet time in bringing Samsung Pay to the United Kingdom. The company has expanded its mobile payments service to a handful of new markets across the globe over the past week. Not too long ago, it finally flipped the switch on Samsung Pay for customers in the United Kingdom as well.

The company may have already conceded a lot of ground to rival payment services like Android Pay and Apple Pay. Both services have long been available in the United Kingdom. Samsung Pay itself was launched over two years ago in South Korea so its UK launch was long overdue.

Samsung Pay still doesn’t support some of the top financial institutions in the country, including Barclays and Llyods Bank. However, it’s expanding its reach to more potential customers by adding support for bank cards issued by HSBC, M&S Bank, and First Direct.

Users who have a card from the issues mentioned above can now use Samsung Pay to make payments on the go. Samsung Pay is currently supported on the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S6 series in the United Kingdom.

Samsung is also adding support to the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A7 (2016) via a software update. Samsung Pay will be supported on additional Samsung handsets “in the coming months.”

Samsung Pay received three awards at the Payments and Cards Award Summit

Samsung Pay received three awards – Best Contactless Innovation of 2017, Best Mobile Payments Solution of 2017 and Best Payments Innovation of 2017 — at the Payments and Cards Award Summit on Wednesday, June 7 in Mumbai, India.

“Payments & Cards Summit is a comprehensive platform providing a unique venue point to discuss the current situation, future trends and innovations in payments, cards and mobile markets,” explains Samsung.

Since launching in the region back in March, Samsung Pay has become one of the most widely-used mobile payment platforms, with a total market adoption of nearly 50 percent on the firm’s recently-launched flagship smartphones.

It’s safe to say that one of the main reasons Samsung Pay has been so successful in India is because of its integration with the National Payments Corporation and PayTM, which allows users to make peer-to-peer money transfers and pay for goods using QR codes.

Samsung is also working closely with Digital India to bring Samsung Pay to more of its mid-range smartphones, including the Galaxy J7 Pro, in an effort to encourage residents to adopt a digital wallet as opposed to handling cash.

Samsung explains how it had to ‘humanize’ the brand after the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco

It’s never an ideal scenario when a high-end product that you’ve just released runs into problems and before you know it, there’s a negative connotation attached to the product that was supposed to earn you billions of dollars.

That’s precisely what happened with Samsung last year when a battery fault caused many Galaxy Note 7 handsets to spontaneously catch fire. Samsung discontinued the flagship device but it had to sustain significant damage to its brand reputation as well.

Samsung’s chief marketing officer in the United States Marc Mathieu explained that the company was then forced to change its marketing strategy to focus on trust and rebuilding its relationship with consumers.

Speaking at a session at the Cannes Lions Festival, Mathieu said that the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco was a disaster that he “wouldn’t wish it on any marketer.”

“We were getting free [negative] advertising anytime people would board a plane – we didn’t need that,” he added, referring to a blanket ban placed by airlines across the globe to stop people from bringing a Galaxy Note 7 inside the cabin.

Samsung has since created a group of “hand raisers,” a group of consumers that like the company and care to help it evolve its strategy. The company decided to “humanize” the brand more following the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco last year. It’s focusing less on the product and its features and more on brand trust.

The idea is to speak to people about the quality and the quality process behind the company’s products. It’s also more focused on customer care now and has also worked on rebuilding its emotional relationship with people.

One recent example of these efforts is the Ostrich TVC that delivers this message home by focusing on “making products that in theory couldn’t be made so that people could do things that couldn’t be done.”

An audience member asked Mathieu if Samsung is taking enough risks as a brand. He replied that the company “fundamentally rethinks the marketing playbook all the time” and actively pushes to be the disruptor in the market and not the company being disrupted.
